Had a wonderful experience at Okunoin. Service is superb, the meals are delicious (too much food actually!), and very pretty baths. I enjoyed the private bath at night with the water mirror. Highly recommend.

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese resort experience in an area laden with history and lore, this is the place to book: rooms with tatami beds and sliding partitions, private and public hot springs, relax rooms, lounges and an inner landscaped garden dotted with fish ponds and interesting vegetation. Plus, of course, today’s necessities like Wi-Fi, climate control, sentient toilet seats and a full array of quality complimentary cosmetics. Based upon a casual observation, the place seems to target primarily couples looking for rest and relaxation, but worked just as well for our family of four, which includes two teenagers. As everywhere else we went, the staff was always very attentive and ready to assist however possible. LOCATION: offering both privacy and convenience, the hotel is located along an unassuming country road, a ten minute walk from the main thoroughfare connecting Nikko with Lake Chōzenji and served by local buses, with a stop just 100 meters down the road. Buses generally run two or three times an hour, but without a regular pattern, so plan accordingly (the front desk, of course, has all the schedules and route information handy). The hotel is also within walking distance of the shrine complex that is Nikko’s main attraction. ROOM: we spent two nights in an Aqua Deluxe Suite, which accommodates four guests in two separate partitioned areas, one with Western beds and the other with tatami beds set up every night. The room also features a sitting room and separate toilet, sink and shower areas. We had to be a little creative in storing our suitcases (pack lightly when travelling around Japan!) but the room actually offered more storage space than initially observed. The key feature of the room is an outdoor hot bath tub overlooking a private man-made pond closed off by a wall, offering complete privacy. After a day of hikes, it was a pleasure to soak in the tub surrounded by nothing but the sound of cascading water and chirping insects. AMENITIES: breakfast and dinner were included in the room rate, and I recommend taking full advantage of them. All the meals, with a set rotating menu, offered a great variety of what we took as local fish, meat and vegetable dishes, all prepared with quality ingredients and artfully served in private rooms. And don’t be deceived by the small portions: you will end up eating a lot! All meals are served at fixed hours, requiring advance reservations. The hot springs offer both indoors and outdoor basins: in a place like this, just wear the hotel-provided yukata and slippers and embrace the Japanese way of relaxation.

We enjoyed the stay and were very happy with the room, meals and the service. This includes the front desk, shuttle driver, the lovely ladies who served our meals. I was especially impressed that the staff were there to hand you the room key and greet you with a smile every time when we arrive by the hotel shuttle or taxi. Our room has river views. The room is spacious with two large beds, tatami area and a small lounge. The amenities of the room are superb. There is even a massage chair and binoculars. Very considerate. The temperature of the open air bath is perfect, so relaxing. We stayed for three nights and had a different delicious menu every night. The only criticism was that there was no printed menu for the last day which we enjoyed following the first two nights. We will certainly stay here again if we visit Nikko.

We really enjoyed our 2 night stay in a Japanese style room. Our room had a nice hot tub in the balcony which was pumped with Onsen water. It was so relaxing, especially looking out to the nature. The hotel staff is very friendly even though number of English speaking staff is limited. Despite that we did not have any issues and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The kitchen team took special care, especially taking into account our vegetarian needs. We loved our breakfast and dinner. Already thinking about visiting again

We took the shuttle bus from Tobu Nikko Station. When we arrived, an attendant came to greet us, and we passed through the lobby and checked in to our room with a view of the courtyard. We were given a welcome drink, which included a choice of soft drinks, beer, or sparkling wine. There was an open-air bath, a bath, and a sauna, so we were able to relax very well. Immediately after the bath, there was a small space where we could rest, with several types of soft drinks and sparkling wine. The bookshelves were stocked with various books as well as popular manga series, so we were able to spend our time in a relaxed atmosphere. We were very satisfied with the wonderful food, both breakfast and dinner. The facility itself may be a little old, but the attentive service and the small touches of kindness were felt everywhere, reminiscent of the goodness of old Japanese inns, which are now rare. It was a very satisfying holiday. We highly recommend it.

Booked a Japanese-Western style room in Ginryu for two days and one night. I visited on a family trip (including a 2 year old toddler). Buses will pick you up from major spots such as Toshogu Shrine and Tobu Nikko Station, so there's no problem even if you don't have a car. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with welcome drinks and dried fruits in the stylish lobby, and the atmosphere was very nice. The room is clean and spacious enough for a family. The garden in particular is well-maintained, and you can see the Japanese garden up close as you can see in the photos. Both dinner and breakfast are made with local gourmet ingredients and are very delicious. Even small children can enjoy rice and miso soup. There are books to borrow and a lounge, sparkling wine at night in the relaxing space, and all-you-can-drink Tochigi milk in the morning, which both children and adults enjoyed. The employees were polite and treated my daughter well. The whole family was very satisfied and it was an inn that makes us want to visit again someday.

From the direction of Nikko/Shinbashi, take Route 122 and turn right in front of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa. The landmark signboard was old, and the road was narrow and we passed what looked like a material storage area, so I almost gave up on my choice, but soon I came to a beautiful road and saw the Tokugawa building beyond the greenery. I could see it. There were not many customers as it was the weekday of the coronavirus pandemic. A two-story building with 22 rooms in total. Check in at the small lobby. The welcome drink is sparkling wine. The aquarium on the table with tropical fish is so impressive that it's just not for my taste. The room we used was Tsukuyo Fuji, a Japanese-Western style room with a terrace. From the deck terrace, you can see green trees and a Japanese garden below. The private open-air bath is set up in a garden style, with a water terrace spreading out in front of you, giving you an incredible sense of openness. Dinner was served in a spacious private room, and the dishes, mainly Tochigi Wagyu beef shabu, were both flawless and delicious. Although it felt a bit crowded, I was impressed by the well-planned beauty of the garden.

As soon as I parked my car, I was greeted with a smile by the staff, and I was able to leave my luggage and car in no time. At that moment, I was convinced that I had found a good accommodation, but the reality is that there are not many such accommodations, so I was very happy. I am very satisfied with everything about the room, amenities, bath, and food, and the service from the staff is also of the highest standard. As a customer, I get a little nervous if I don't like certain things, but I feel like I'm a typical person in a good way, and that's why I was able to relax both physically and mentally. It was an inn that I would like to visit again, and an inn that I would like to enjoy my stay in without sightseeing next time.
