The Trooper Inn

An excellent find… we will be back! Stayed with my daughter for a sunny Sat/Sun in March and never get around to reviews, but this one had to be done! Have recommended to friends and extended family. Friendly and welcoming rural inn, excellent value, comfortable rooms, serving good food - that included a delicious vegan gnocchi dish (not the usual bog-standard burger and chips) for my daughter. Warm and helpful management and staff in a cosy setting with friendly and chatty locals… and their lovely dogs! Beautiful rural setting… we walked in the pretty much unchanged footsteps of the war poet, Edward Thomas, who was unsurprisingly so much inspired by the beautiful surroundings, and relaxed in a soothing bubble bath before a fine supper. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We could not have asked for more. ☺️

We used to use this pub regularly for both drinks & meals & even chose to have our wedding reception here when Hassen owned it. It was such a great place with a warm welcome & a regular dining experience for us. The place was very quiet for Friday evening at 20.30 with no one eating! Unfortunately this evening after dining in Portsmouth where we had booked thankfully as it was so busy, we decided to stop off at the Trooper to look at the menu to book a family occasion. After the trip I needed the loo & as I know the place I went to go to toilet & left my husband to order the drinks. I could hear the barmaid saying to my husband where was I going to which he replied she needs the loo. Her reply was normally, people order drinks & ask first!!. After we sat down my husband said she wasn't very happy to which the bar person thumb signalled to my husband asking if everything was OK, then proceeded to call my husband a Tw*t infront of the whole bar. To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement!! We drank our drinks whilst she stood fuming behind the bar. We left not willing to return & certainly would not recommend.

First and last time to the Trooper Inn. They did manage to get us a last minute table for Sunday lunch which was the best I can say. Service for the whole pub seemed to be with one person and as a resuly was not only very slow but also not very welcoming. The food then proceeded to take ages and was not good when it arrived (cold and uninspiring with caulifower cheese left off as they had run out but of course we were not made aware of this!)

Excellent room - very clean, huge comfortable bed, nice bathroom. Great pub food. No frills, but tasty. Great host: welcoming and efficient. Excellent value for money. Lovely gardens and plenty of parking. We used it as a stopover and can't recommend it highly enough.

Stayed for 3 nights this week while working away. Can honestly say one of the best places I’ve stayed in a long time the food is great the hospitality is great the owner is friendly and does everything for you if you need it done. Highly recommend anyone who is thinking of staying

Our group went for lunch and Chris and Hassan were superb. Great food and service and excellent VFM. What else do I need to say but I have to keep going as I have to use 200 characters! Thanks for a great lunch.
