I spent two days at the Des Epoques hotel and was truly amazed by the interior of the place. It is an old hotel in the middle of Rome with a beautiful classic-style breakfast room. The administrator was polite and helpful, so I want to recommend this place. However, the hotel is a little overpriced.

There was lots of construction signs in the hotel, could be a different hotel when refurbished. The fellow who checked us in was very friendly and very helpful with information as to where to eat and how to get around. The others on staff were unremarkable, not friendly and not unfriendly, not helpful and not unhelpful, just there. Room was okay, bed was comfortable enough. Bathroom was old and tired, had to let the hot water run a long time to have a hot shower. Sink plumbing leaked and there was always a puddle on the floor. Breakfast appears to be ample however the hot food was never hot, cold everyday. Cold eggs and cold sausage are not good. Location is good, 2 bus stops from Roma termini. There is a bus stop just outside the hotel which makes getting around quite easy.

I was a bit concerned after reading recent reviews but I needn't have worried. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly. Our room was a good size as was the bathroom. There were no tea/coffee making facilities and the TV didn't work but that didn't really matter as we were out all day and there are plentyh of shops & cafes near by. It's handy for publi transport with bus stops virtually on the doorstep & Roma Termini a 20min walk away.

The location of the hotel was good, close to notable areas such as Trevi Fountain, Colloseum, The Forum, Vatican City and others. The hotel's water boiler failed for 3 out of the 4 days we were there. The hotel staff was not forthcoming about the issues, because twice we were told that it was fixed only to recant their statement once I call them to complain. We asked for the manager several times and they wouldn't even give the name and just kept telling us "come by at 7 am to speak with the manager". We left early every morning to visit the city and the tours we scheduled so there was never a good time to speak with the manager. Besides, we are the ones inconvenienced so it should have been the staff making an effort to reach us and not the other way around. I definitely would not stay here again.

This ruined our trip! Staff were rude and unhelpful. The hotel itself is vile! We were dumped in this hotel it was not one we booked and we were mortified when we walked in! The first room was awful looked like blood on the head board holes in the walls, paper ripped and the bathroom looked like it was from the 60s with a dripping shower. We then got moved after the staff moaned at us for sitting on the bed and was clearly annoyed with us. 2nd room was slightly bigger but still awful paper hanging off and holes in the walls. I tried to shower and the water was cold, the shower was awful. We asked at reception why we had no water and we were told because the other hotel hasn’t paid them yet and if they don’t pay soon we would have to pay. This was laughable I would never pay to stay here we were here through the fault of the first hotel We came back in the evening and clearly they turned our hot water back on after we went out to buy wash stuff cause the hotel had nothing. We asked for an iron and the guy was furious he eventually brought one up about 40 mins later and the ironing board was taped together. The photos on here are very old and it’s a dump. Skirting hanging off, wallpaper ripped damp walls everywhere. This is more like a 2 star. I cannot advise you enough not to stay in this dump. Everyone in the hotel we spoke to were shocked by the state of the place and how rude the staff are everyone said there is no way this is a 4 star maybe 20yrs ago! This rating shouldn’t even be a 1 star the place needs to be condemned!

After being moved from one hotel due to room issues we were advised this was a higher star hotel and they would cover the extra cost and breakfast. On arrival we were greeted by what could only be described as a rude unkept man that seemed uninterested in us checking in. We were then shown to a room after walking past a desk randomly placed in the corridor to what can only be described as a wallpapered cell. We then made a call that this would not so and was then shown to a larger room which in the end we could cope with. The hotel was classed as 4* must have been given this rating in 1940’s and it is in poor condition and manned by rude and untidy staff. The breakfast was as basic as basic can be and I would also advise if you like cold showers, a basic breakfast and to be spoken rudely to by messy staff then this is the place.

We get there to check in and the front desk staff is acting extremely unprofessional, obviously giggling and talking in Italian about us to each other. The two younger girls are doing this off to the side, then the older woman with medium length hair actually checking us in said something to them that also made them laugh so apparently instead of nipping it in the bud as the adult/sort of supervisor in the situation, she was contributing to this behavior. We dismissed this as immature and figured it would be a one off. When we got to the room, they had given us accommodation with a large hole in the wallpaper. The internet did not work the entire time we were there and there was some kind of vintage jacuzzi shower (?) which was fun but did not work. It was like taking a shower under a sink with no water pressure. Finally, the fridge is left unplugged so even though you leave the key in to turn the room's power on, the fridge takes an extra step to start. Our food went bad because we didn't realize they had done this; we didn't see any posting about it. Their breakfast is ok but again, yet another incredibly rude staff member made it her mission to harass us all three days we were there. The first day she shamed us for not using silverware the way she preferred, standing over our table and glaring at us until we acknowledged her, baffled at her response, and spent the rest of breakfast giving us dirty looks from across the room. We ignored it as disproportionate to anything we did and moved on. The next day she came over and made a show of looking at the room # on our key, implying we weren't actually staying there and were coming in specifically to steal breakfast. We still just thought it was ridiculous and that would be it. Today, she again went out of her way to scold us about something in Italian, still not sure what it is. We were minding our business and each day she found a reason to come and be unpleasant to us and only us. She had none of these interactions with any of the other guests. Some of the staff is perfectly polite and we had no issue with them. The cleaners, the night staff, all fine. There was a male Italian breakfast staffer we got along splendidly with; he was very kind and we loved him. I do not know what the issue was with these other members of staff and honestly, from other reviews, it sounds like they are starting to affect business. When we were checking out, it was the initial 3 immature staff members again at the front desk. I asked to speak to the manager and the older woman said they weren't there. I asked how to contact them and she had no information regarding that. Then I said do you have their name or number? Somehow she runs a hotel and didn't have any of that information about her bosses. Awful convenient. I think they just do their jobs poorly/rudely and try to intercept poor reviews/feedback. Truly, don't stay here. It's pretty but all these factors really ruined the stay.
