JOYA Hotel Shanghai Gubei Reviews

I feel scammed. I fell for the Ctrip 5-diamond rating, paying 5-star hotel prices for what felt like a budget hotel. The main entrance to the lobby is ridiculously small; two people can't walk in side-by-side, you have to go in single file. The guest room had a tiny 1-2 square meter rug on the laminate flooring. The room itself was small, but the shower stall was huge – big enough for four people to shower at once, though it only had one showerhead. As for the 298 RMB breakfast, you can imagine the standard: just a few types of fruit and bread, only plain congee, and no labels for the dishes. I've also never seen such poor-quality scallions. It's worse than a 98 RMB breakfast at other 5-star hotels. The entire hotel lacks any service awareness. From facilities to service, the hotel's logic feels incredibly petty. At first, I thought it was some unprofessional private hotel, but then I realized it was part of Huazhu Group, and it all made sense. Huazhu, which started with budget hotels, operates with a 'what's convenient for us' mentality, unlike other 5-star hotels that prioritize 'what's convenient for the guest.' If Huazhu doesn't change this logic, they'll never truly be a 5-star hotel. This is the first time I've written so much as a Ctrip member of over twenty years.

We enjoyed our stay at Joya! It’s a beautiful boutique style hotel that brings in the Chinese culture. Located in a one of the most Japanese dominant area in Shanghai. Room are very spacious, great service, lovely intercontinental Chinese morning buffet. The shower area is relatively big, overall a lot spacious compared to other regular rooms. We would definitely stay here again, it’s about 15-20mins drive to most prominent areas. Reception also gave us a little gift upon check out! 🩷

They upgraded my room, which was great! The location is super convenient, right next to Takashimaya. You can also take a short walk to see the ginkgo trees at Gucheng Road. It was really nice to be able to have tea here. Very satisfied.

Much better than expected! I didn't realize a HUAZHU Hotels Group property could have such quality; it was truly excellent. I especially loved the room's design and layout. The best part was how quiet and dark it was, though the AC was a bit too cold.

I really liked it. The check-in/check-out times were flexibly accommodated to suit the customer's needs, depending on room availability. It really helped alleviate my fatigue. It was also great that food delivery came right to the door. The environment was clean, and the room layout was good and comfortable. The only minor inconvenience was that the pillow was a bit too high; I wonder if they would have provided a different one if I had asked a staff member. I was too tired this time, so I just slept with it as it was.

Hotel has alll the amenities, huge gym. The room was super big and beds very comfortable. The staff were very attentive and professional. I had a splendid experience. We love the hotel so much!!

I was attending an exhibition in Shanghai, and this hotel is located right by Hongqiao. It's amazing that you can still find such a comfortable hotel here, and the price hasn't really gone up, which is incredibly lucky. It's very spacious with a great design. I slept exceptionally well.

The soundproofing is poor. Housekeeping started cleaning upstairs at around 8 AM, and the sound insulation with the adjacent room was also bad, which severely affected my rest and overall experience. The manager, however, had a good attitude and arranged a special car for us.

I really liked the hotel's design and decor. The front desk staff and other employees were all very kind and friendly. The gym facilities were also quite comprehensive. Breakfast was pretty good, but they might want to consider replacing the coffee machine; it was a bit worn out 🤣

The room was comfortable, and breakfast was great! I'd definitely stay here again; the experience was excellent. It's in the city center, making it easy to get around, and right next to Takashimaya for convenient dining with plenty of options!

Quite new, very clean, and stylishly designed.

The environment and hygiene were both satisfactory, and the view was lovely. The location is excellent, right opposite Takashimaya and the Golden City Walk pedestrian street. Subway access nearby is fantastic, connecting you everywhere. The front desk service was very good, with quick and efficient responses. Aside from that, the soundproofing is a bit lacking; I was woken up in the morning by the sound of doors closing nearby. Also, the bathroom fixtures are a bit old, with some peeling paint on the metal.

I recently stayed for 9 days at the Joya Hotel in Gubei, Shanghai, and had a great overall experience. The hotel is modern, elegant, and exceptionally clean. My room was spacious, with a comfortable bed, a stylish bathroom, and great soundproofing — perfect for resting after long days in the city. The staff was friendly, professional, and always willing to help, even with limited English. The location in Gubei is fantastic — close to cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, and within walking distance to metro lines, making it easy to explore Shanghai. The area feels very safe and quiet, ideal for both business and leisure travelers. The daily housekeeping was consistent, and small details like free water and well-maintained amenities made the stay even better. Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, which was important for work. Overall, Joya Hotel offers excellent value, comfort, and convenience — I would definitely stay here again.
