We visited Cobblers Cove on Christmas Day as we could see they were offering what sounded like a delicious Christmas buffet. When we first arrived and went to the bar, it was very sweet and quaint, and we had a really lovely cocktail, and listened to the Christmas Day band singing. It then went downhill. We were seated at a table which was originally for four people, but they amended it to be 2 x 2 person tables. After about 20 minutes waiting to get served, we were told that we would need to move tables. It took them an hour in total to move us to another table. The manager was good when we had a quiet word with her about this long wait and brought us some champagne to apologise. The new table didn’t have any Christmas crackers on it, unlike all the other tables. It took us asking three times for them to be brought. When our starter finally arrived - well after an hour after our booking time - our ‘caprese salad’ was a bowl of 90% undressed tomato, with 1 slice of mozzarella on top. It was quite disappointing. Our main course, however, was where the main disappointment set in. The buffet consisted of turkey, beef, ham, rice and halved new potatoes. No green veg, no gravy etc. There was also a salad station, except each bowl was just filled with what seemed like canned veg that had been emptied into bowls (ie sweetcorn). There were a lot of flies around the food, and my wife’s beef was inedible, it was so stringy and fat. My turkey was from the very end of the bird and felt like they just didn’t want to bring out a new turkey - it was disappointing, and dry due to the lack of gravy. The desserts were fine. Upon leaving, we noticed they hadn’t charged us for the cocktail we had. We assumed this was because of the very poor experience. However we were then approached by the barman and made to pay for it. At this point we decided to let one of the management team know about our poor experience. We were refunded for what we paid on the day, minus the cocktail and our sizeable deposit. The partial refund is why we have scored this 2/5 rather than 1/5. The reason that we are rating this so low is because the expectations for a Christmas lunch are high, and we had chosen Cobblers Cove out of the myriad of choices we were presented with. From what we were being charged, we had certain expectations about the quality of the experience, and those were completely missed.
