On our last night in Urumqi before returning to Shanghai, we booked two rooms on Ctrip: a king room and a superior king room. My girlfriend and I stayed in the superior king room, while our travel companions stayed in the king room.
1. The front desk didn't inquire about room type during check-in. We proactively asked if we could be assigned to the same floor, and they said yes.
Upon arriving on the 10th floor, we discovered both rooms were identical. We called the front desk, and they told us the superior king room was only available at the first and last rooms (shouldn't they have asked me at the front desk?). They then said, "Sir, didn't you not want a first or last room?" (I didn't mention this request, nor was it noted in the order notes). Considering it was our last day, I let it go, but the hotel offered no compensation. They only gave us three breakfast vouchers as compensation after I asked.
2. In room 1009, the three of us were discussing our itinerary when we suddenly noticed the room was filled with steam (we don't smoke), with only the humidifier on. My girlfriend and I felt dizzy, and then we saw black smoke coming from the vents. When we opened the door, the alarm started sounding. The staff came up and found that the mezzanine was burned or something (they didn't tell us). After we arrived, they wouldn't tell us what to do until I suggested changing rooms. They moved us to the 11th floor.
Until we checked out, they never told us why it was burned, and there was no compensation whatsoever. They didn't even apologize for the disruptive experience.
Overall, it was a very poor experience. From beginning to end, the hotel didn't seem to take us seriously at all.
