Why Huzhou is the Next Culture City of East Asia (Part 1)

On September 12, 2024, the 15th China-Japan-Korea Ministerial Conference on Culture was held in Kyoto, Japan. At the conference, commemorative plaques for the 2025 "Culture City of East Asia" were awarded to China's Macao Special Administrative Region and Huzhou City in Zhejiang Province, Kamakura City in Japan, and Anseong City in South Korea. Huzhou became the 17th city in China to be named a "Culture City of East Asia." There are many cities in China named after lakes, such as Wuhu, a prefecture-level city in Anhui Province; Chaohu, which has been incorporated into Hefei in the same province; Honghu in Jingzhou, Hubei Province; and Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, named after two lakes. However, there is one city that is simply and purely named after a "lake." What's even more incredible is that the lake this city is named after doesn't actually belong to it. It's like the "borrowed scenery" in Chinese garden art: you can see the lake, but it doesn't belong to you. This city is called Huzhou, and the lake it is famous for is called Taihu Lake. Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China and the most culturally significant and well-developed for tourism among the five major freshwater lakes. In Wuxi, there is a cliff carving at Yuantouzhu, known as the "First Scenic Spot of Taihu Lake," with the words "Encompassing Wu and Yue" inscribed by Liao Lun, a Qing Dynasty scholar who served as the local magistrate of Wuxi. This inscription highlights the historical and cultural significance of Taihu Lake in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. Today, the shores of Taihu Lake are home to four cities: Huzhou in Zhejiang, and Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou in Jiangsu. Although Huzhou is closer to Taihu Lake, most of the lake's surface is divided among the three cities of Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, leaving Huzhou with only a 50-meter-wide shoreline. The earliest administrative division named "Huzhou" can be traced back to the Sui Dynasty, and for over a thousand years, the names Wuxing and Huzhou alternated. Huzhou was named after its proximity to Taihu Lake and flourished because of it. As the birthplace of cultural treasures such as the "king of brushes" Huzhou brush, the "Rongji Huzhou silk" that won gold and silver awards at the World Industrial Exposition, and the tea culture led by the tea sage Lu Yu, Huzhou became a leader in the development of Jiangnan for over a thousand years. The Huzhou merchants, represented by silk merchants, rose to prominence in the late Qing Dynasty, participating in the development of Shanghai and profoundly influencing modern China's economy. Huzhou lost jurisdiction over the surface of Taihu Lake in the early days of liberation, with various explanations such as the suppression of bandits in Taihu Lake and the exchange of land between Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Whatever the reason, it is now a thing of the past. The people of Huzhou did not "sigh at the lake," but instead embraced the sentiment of "having traveled all over the beautiful land of Jiangnan, one should only live in Huzhou." Among the many cities in Jiangnan, Huzhou may not be the most famous or economically advanced, but it remains one of the most livable cities and a popular tourist destination in southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang. Jiangnan Water Town (VIII)

After a short rest in the afternoon, we officially stepped into the ancient town of Nanxun. It was only when we entered that we learned that by simply registering our fingerprints, we could re-enter the park at any time the next day. Upon entering the gate, we immediately immersed ourselves in the picturesque scene of small bridges over flowing water and households along the river. The small streets on both sides of the river feature both manor houses and distinctive shops, with several small bridges connecting the two streets. Strolling along the riverbank, one can easily visit several major attractions in the scenic area without deliberately searching. Sitting on the stone steps by the river, behind me, a black-awning boat would occasionally drift by, followed by moments where only the stone arch bridge and the glistening waves under the stone steps are left; the bluestone paths seem to narrate the noble and elegant past of Nanxun; standing on the stone arch bridge and looking down, the ancient houses on the side, the drooping green leaves, and the distant boats add a touch of vitality to the scene. Nanxun has a famous architectural complex called the Hundred Houses. The Hundred Houses were built during the Ming Dynasty and have a history of over four hundred years. It is the most well-preserved riverside residential building complex from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the Jiangnan area, with about a hundred houses that maintain the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty while also incorporating the charm of the Qing Dynasty. The buildings are erected along the river, winding along the waterway, and the delicate and transparent roll-up doors connect the entire Hundred Houses into a long arcade-style street. To get to the Hundred Houses, one must first cross a small road. Walking deeper into the streets, the shops become fewer, and a sense of desolation and vicissitudes arises. Suddenly, I found myself on the long street of the Hundred Houses complex. Here, the simplicity and naturalness, the sparse tourists, and the sight of the locals' simple ancient town life are so leisurely and comfortable. The red lanterns hung in front of each household form a beautiful scenery line, which, together with the building complex and small bridges, is reflected in the water, presenting a tranquil and beautiful scene that one is reluctant to disturb.

As you enter the camp, you will see a large group of employees from other companies having a team-building event. The food on the barbecue grill is steaming and fragrant. Everyone is smiling, and the stress of daily life is released here! You can also experience the most unique healing activities here and free your mind! The sunset falls into the stars, and the world suddenly becomes late. The mountains and lakes are accompanied by autumn colors. The children clap their hands and say in their childish voices, "It's so beautiful!" 🚗 Transportation and Accommodation: We stayed in a honeycomb cabin today, which is made up of three floors and looks like a honeycomb. The interior decoration is also very unique. You can also enjoy the night view from the rooftop at night! Parking is very convenient, and there are charging piles. The camp is right across from Taihu Lake, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Taihu Lake. 🍜 Camp Food: Outdoor barbecue, providing Kongye Healing Camp canopy, egg roll tables and chairs, cassette stove, water kettle, and a Korean barbecue set meal with a mix of meat and vegetables. The meat includes steak, thinly sliced beef belly, Australian prawns, pepper chicken fillet, exquisite pork belly, and Angus beef cubes. The vegetables include enoki mushrooms, potato slices, shiitake mushrooms, lettuce, and leeks. 📌 Tips: 1. The honeycomb cabin is very comfortable.
