I had heard about its earthquake history, but once I arrived, I discovered a city that felt much more interesting than I expected — a mix of historic buildings, modern architecture, wide green spaces and the Southern Alps not too far beyond the city. What I liked most was the pace. Christchurch feels spacious, relaxed and easy to explore, making it a great first stop before heading deeper into New Zealand's South Island. 🌿 Hagley Park Is the City's Green Heart One of the first places I enjoyed was Hagley Park. Right beside the city centre, the huge park gives Christchurch a surprisingly open and peaceful feeling. You can walk beneath the trees, cycle around the park or simply sit on the grass with a coffee. If you visit during spring, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are especially beautiful, with colourful flowers and the Avon River winding through the gardens. For me, this was the perfect introduction to Christchurch — slow, green and relaxed. 🚋 Explore the City Centre Christchurch's centre has changed dramatically over the years. The 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes caused extensive damage, including the loss of many historic buildings. Since then, Christchurch has gone through a long process of rebuilding and regeneration. What I found interesting was the contrast between old and new. You can see modern buildings and creative public spaces alongside surviving heritage architecture. The Cardboard Cathedral is one of the city's most unusual landmarks, while New Regent Street is known for its colourful historic-style buildings. Walking around the centre made it easy to see how Christchurch has created a new identity without completely forgetting its past. 🚣 The Avon River Gives the City a Different Feel Another thing I enjoyed was the Avon River / Ōtakaro. The river passes through the city centre and the Botanic Gardens, and you can see people walking, cycling and even punting along the water. A traditional punting experience is one of the more relaxed ways to see the city. It doesn't feel like a major tourist attraction — more like a peaceful break from exploring the streets. 🏔️ Christchurch Is a Great Gateway One reason I would include Christchurch in a South Island itinerary is its location. From here, you can continue towards Lake Tekapo, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Arthur's Pass and the West Coast. You can also head towards Akaroa and Banks Peninsula, where the landscape becomes more coastal and volcanic. So even if Christchurch itself isn't your main destination, it's a very useful base for starting or finishing a South Island road trip. ❤️ My Experience What surprised me most was that Christchurch didn't feel like a city trying to impress me. Leaving Tekapo, we first encountered endless golden plains and pastures, then traversed magnificent canyons, before finally navigating the undulating mountain roads of the Banks Peninsula for the last 40 kilometers. With each turn, a glimpse of a deep blue bay would unexpectedly appear. Before sunset, as the car rounded the last mountain pass, the entire town came into view—colorful little houses dotted the shore, white sailboats dotted the sea, and the setting sun bathed the bay in a warm orange-gold hue. The two kids exclaimed, "This is clearly a seaside town in the South of France!" Checking into the Akaroa Waterfront Motel, with its unobstructed ocean view, they made tomato pasta while enjoying the sea breeze and watching the fishing lights gradually illuminate the scene; the fatigue of the journey vanished. 💡 Driving Notes: Time and Road Conditions: Approximately 320km in total, driving time 4-4.5 hours. Splitting between two people makes it very cost-effective. Be sure to choose a room with a kitchen so you can enjoy cooking your own seafood feast. 🚢 Akaroa day trip—the perfect way to explore Christchurch’s backyard Start from Christchurch city center and take Highway 75 southeast. It’s about 84 km and a 90-minute drive. The road itself is amazing, crossing the volcanic ridges of Banks Peninsula. Lots of curves but excellent road conditions. The farms and bays along the way are all postcard-worthy. 📍 First stop: Herbert Peak lookout Halfway there is the Herbert Peak Lookout, where you can see bays on both sides and clearly spot volcanic landforms. The parking lot is small but free. 📍 Second stop: Akaroa town This French-style town has just over 600 residents, and all the street names are in French! Rue Lavaud is the main street, lined with galleries and bakeries housed in century-old buildings. In summer, sitting by the pier watching fishing boats come and go is incredibly relaxing. 📍 Third stop: Akaroa lighthouse It’s about a 15-minute walk along the lighthouse trail to the cliff’s edge, with the deep blue Pacific Ocean below. In summer, the trail is lined with lupines, their pink and purple flowers contrasting stunningly with the sea. The trail is free but has a steep section, so wear sneakers! 🐬 About going out to sea—do your homework to avoid pitfalls Akaroa Harbor is home to Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest dolphin species. Even on an overcast day, the view of the curved Akaroa Harbour, the distant scenery, and the peninsula was picture-perfect. If you're after those vibrant blue skies and white clouds, make sure to check the weather forecast before you plan your visit hey~ Akaroa French Town 🇫🇷🏛️ Akaroa is a remarkably quiet and charming French settlement. Bully Hayes Restaurant & Bar 🍴 Location: 57 Beach Road, Akaroa We dined at Bully Hayes, a lovely seaside spot in Akaroa. We tried the Confit of Duck and Seafood Paella this time, and they were absolutely yum~ The portions run a bit small, though, so if you have a larger group, I recommend ordering a few more signature dishes (like the Fresh Tuna Steak, Bully’s Kiwi Burger, etc.). Sitting right by the water, enjoying fresh seafood with harbor views—it’s the ultimate vacation feeling. Tresori Motor Lodge 🏨 Address: 128 Rue Jolie For accommodation, I highly recommend Tresori Motor Lodge. The location is unbeatable, just a few minutes' walk to the seaside and the pier. The rooms feature kitchenettes and spa baths, making them perfect for short stays or family trips. While the rooms are spacious and comfortable with great overall reviews from most guests, do keep in mind that a few rooms might have minor hygiene or equipment maintenance quirks. If you're driving, be sure to let the front desk know your needs in advance! Montgomery Park Scenic Reserve, Duvauchelle Address: Summit Road, Duvauchelle 7591 This rural nature reserve park is open all day. On a sunny day, you can gaze out over wetlands, grasslands, and distant mountain views. When it’s rainy and overcast, it takes on that unique, moody, and desolate New Zealand charm. I suggest wearing waterproof shoes or bringing a raincoat for hiking to fully experience the beauty of the outdoors. Practical Tips: · Akaroa is perfect for slow travel.
