This is a record of a castle tour in Hiroshima. It is famous for the buildings relocated from Fushimi Castle during Tokugawa Ieyasu's era, such as the Fushimi Yagura and Tsukimi Yagura, and the iron-plated north side of the main keep. ◼︎Mihara Castle To reach the main keep platform of Mihara Castle, you can access it from the dedicated passage on the first floor of JR Mihara Station. The main keep site of Mihara Castle is where Mihara Station of the Sanyo Shinkansen is located. Stone walls remain under the station's elevated tracks. ◼︎Mihara Castle Funairi Yagura Ruins Mihara Castle opened towards the sea, functioning as both a castle and a military port. It was built utilizing small islands along the coast. The stone walls of the Funairi Yagura Ruins still show the foundation made from reefs. ◼︎Akitakata City History and Folklore Museum There is a section dedicated to Mōri Motonari, with detailed introductions to the Mōri clan through models and videos of Kōriyama Castle. It is recommended to visit this museum along with the Kōriyama Castle ruins. The back of the building serves as the entrance to the Kōriyama Castle site.

Located in Aki-Takata City, its official name is the Wakunaga Mitsuyuki Memorial Garden. It is owned by a company called Wakunaga Pharmaceuticals, but is open to the public free of charge, and parking is also free. You can enjoy various flowers depending on the season, but personally, I think the roses in May are the most beautiful. It must be a lot of work to maintain the vast grounds, planting and pruning, but the strong local pride that has allowed it to continue to be open to the public for so many years is impressive. Visitors should also be mindful of good manners when visiting.

If you’re all about ancient artifacts and hidden gems in Tokyo, you’ll seriously geek out for what I found at the Tokyo National Museum (13-9 Ueno Park, Taito City, Tokyo 110-8712, Japan, open daily 9:30 AM–5 PM)! 🗾 Get ready to have your mind blown—these pieces are actual relics from Japan’s Kofun period (think 6th century, so like... ultra old school). This was the home base for the famous warlord Mori Motonari, and the scale of this mountain fortress is absolutely massive. Unlike fancy reconstructed castles, this site is all about the raw earthworks and stone foundations scattered across the ridge. Walking through the forest to find the various ruins feels like a real treasure hunt. The highlight for many is visiting the grave of Motonari himself, which adds a heavy sense of respect to the hike. It is a peaceful and slightly mysterious spot where nature has reclaimed the battlefield. If you love hiking and authentic samurai history, this rugged mountainside is a total winner.

#January Getaways 2026 Okarizan Sunagao Park isn't just about water slides; it's also a fantastic campsite! Right next to the water slides is a vast grassy plaza where many people pitch tents and spread out picnic mats. Imagine playing wildly in the cool river during the day, then taking an afternoon nap under the shade of trees, listening to the gentle murmur of the flowing water – that's the ultimate "satoyama weekend." Plus, there are very few tourists here; most are local families, making the environment incredibly peaceful and quiet, unlike the noise of popular tourist spots. Importantly, using the facilities is usually free or requires only a very low application fee (depending on the latest local regulations), making it a budget-friendly paradise for backpackers! 🌟 Environmental Features: 1. East Pavilion: The park has pavilions for resting, perfect for those who want to avoid the sun. 2. #JanuaryDestinations2026 Want to play in the water but don't want to go to a crowded swimming pool? Come to Ugo Town, Akita Prefecture and challenge yourself at the amazing "Ooriyama Sandbank Park"! Utilizing the elevation difference of the sandbank, a 30-meter-long "natural waterslide" has been created. The most amazing thing is that the waterslide isn't filled with recycled water, but with real "natural river water"! The water is incredibly clear, and even in summer, it's as cool as ice (or even cold). The speed of sliding down is exhilarating, culminating in a "plop!" as you plunge into the natural wading pool. This feeling of being surrounded by forest and listening to cicadas while playing in the water is the true essence of summer! ☀️ 📸 Must-See Highlights: 1. The Moment of Splashing Water: Ask a friend to capture the moment you plunge into the water at the end; their expressions are usually quite out of control (laughs). 2. #Spring0yenTrip In spring, the scenery of Lake Yachiyo's cherry blossoms spreads out like something out of a picture book. The rows of cherry blossom trees that surround the lake are a spectacular sight, and you can enjoy a cherry blossom-viewing drive while driving slowly♪ The reflection of the cherry blossoms on the lake surface is particularly beautiful. #Spring0yenTrip The JR Geibi Line stretches 159.1km from Hiroshima Station to Bitchu-Kamishiro Station in the north of Okayama Prefecture. While it is used by many people for commuting to work or school in the outskirts of Hiroshima, it is also a famous local line for train enthusiasts, with some sections having the lowest usage in Japan in some years. Between Hiroshima and Miyoshi, diesel railcars from the days of the national railway are in use, with about one train per hour. With seasonal scenery unfolding from the train windows, it is used as a means of transportation between Hiroshima and the north of the prefecture, but in recent years the number of passengers has dropped significantly. There are only about five people on board trains with two or three cars at any given time. I wish there were more people on the line!!! (From a resident along the line)
