Arnarstapi travel guide and discussion

🌿 Recommended Trip Duration: 7-10 days (Classic Ring Road) / 3-5 days (South Coast + Snæfellsnes Peninsula) 💡 Why Visit: Every June to July, this land of Iceland, known for its desolation, is gently covered by vast fields of purple lupines. They stubbornly grow through volcanic rock cracks, swaying freely under the midnight sun, framed by distant glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches, creating a unique "alien flower sea" on this planet. This guide combines the latest 2026 bloom information to plan a route chasing purple romance. ⏰ 2026 Real-Time Bloom and Weather · Current Bloom Period (as of July 2, 2026): According to local Icelandic sources, the entire island is currently at the peak lupine viewing period, expected to last until mid-July. Some high-altitude or northern areas may continue until early August. · Weather and Daylight: Summer average temperature is about 10-15°C, feeling cool. June and July have the midnight sun with very long days, perfect for late-night flower chasing. Weather is variable, windy, and can feel like all four seasons in one day; wind and rain protection is always essential. 🗺️ Key Flower Viewing Spots | More than just Vík, these places are even more photogenic 1. Vík í Mýrdal — Postcard-Worthy Spots · Víkurkirkja (Red-roofed Church): Built in 1932, it is Iceland’s most classic lupine photo spot. The church stands on a hillside surrounded by vast purple flower fields in summer. Sunset is the golden hour when soft light turns the church and flowers golden. Recommended to arrive one hour before sunset. · Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Lupines contrast uniquely with the black sand, white waves, and Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks, creating a distinct Icelandic visual contrast. 2. Snæfellsnes Peninsula — Double Romance of Red and Black Churches · Ingjaldshólskirkja (Red-roofed Church in Hellissandur): Built in 1903. In summer, lupines bloom along the straight road, with the white-walled, red-roofed church surrounded by flower fields and snowy mountains. Recommended to approach from the side to capture a three-layer composition of church, golden grassland, and sky. · Búðakirkja (Black Church in Búðir): A pure black wooden church forming minimalist aesthetics with lupines and tundra. The slanting light at sunset on the wooden structure is very photogenic. 3. Reykjanes Peninsula — Floral Surprise Near the Airport Very close to Keflavík Airport, ideal for a quick stop upon arrival or departure. Large lupine fields grow along roadsides and volcanic rock areas. 4. Northern and Eastern Iceland — Secret Spots Away from Crowds · Akureyri Botanical Garden: Home to various lupine species. · East Fjords: Large flower fields along the way, fewer people, beautiful scenery, perfect for self-driving exploration. 🗓️ Itinerary Suggestions Route 1: South Coast Classic 3-Day Tour (Ideal for short trips/first-time visitors) · Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavík, explore the city. · Day 2: Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss → Skógafoss → Vík (Red-roofed Church + Black Sand Beach lupine photography) → Overnight in Vík. · Day 3: Vík → Vatnajökull National Park (glacier hiking/ice lagoon) → Return to Reykjavík. Route 2: Snæfellsnes Peninsula 2-Day Tour (Lupines + Churches Special) · Day 1: Reykjavík → Snæfellsnes Peninsula → Black Church → Ingjaldshólskirkja (arrive one hour before sunset for lupine and sunset glow photography) → Overnight in Grundarfjörður. · Day 2: Kirkjufell → Arnarstapi Coastal Trail → Return to Reykjavík. 📸 Photography Tips · Outfit Suggestions: Light colors (white/beige) or highly saturated warm colors (red/yellow) dresses to create soft or strong contrast with the purple flower sea. · Best Time: The hour before sunset is the softest "golden hour" light. The midnight sun during the polar day also offers a unique ethereal feel. · Composition Tips: Use red or black churches as backgrounds; use telephoto lenses to compress the flower fields with glaciers and snowy mountains; try low-angle shots to emphasize the spreading flower sea. 🧾 Practical Tips · Transportation: Strongly recommend self-driving as attractions are scattered with no public transport. Reykjavík to Vík takes about 2.5-4 hours; to Snæfellsnes Peninsula about 2-2.5 hours. · Clothing: Windproof and waterproof jackets, waterproof hiking shoes, and warm mid-layers are essential. Wind chill can make it feel much colder than the temperature. · Sun Protection: Long daylight hours and strong UV during the midnight sun require sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen. · Supplies: Few restaurants along the way; bring snacks and water. · Respect: Lupines are non-native species; do not trample or pick them. Churches are active religious sites; please keep quiet. · Payment: Credit cards are widely accepted; carry a small amount of cash. 🌅 Lupine bloom is very short, lasting only one or two months in midsummer. Their flower language is "happiness," but Icelandic lupines symbolize "resilience"—blooming brilliantly in desolation and growing vigorously under the midnight sun. Perhaps that’s why those who have seen them say they remain enchanted. 💬 Which photo made you fall for Icelandic lupines? The red-roofed church in Vík or the flower-lined roads of Snæfellsnes Peninsula? Feel free to share in the comments~

A Wild Iceland Road Trip for Landscape Lovers 🚗❄️🌄 Set your sights on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula—an adventure hub bursting with dramatic cliffs, black churches, wild lava fields, and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. It’s the ultimate route for sunrise-to-sunset chasers and landscape photographers! Start your day at Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint (Q97G+P3C, Arnarstapavegur). Park nearby and hike the windswept coastal trail for jaw-dropping vistas of basalt cliffs and crashing waves—don’t miss the basalt arch of Gatklettur (Q98H+54H, 356 Arnarstapi). Both spots are open year-round, so visit at sunrise or sunset for golden light pouring over those rugged rocks. The best photo ops are from the cliff edge path looking east, especially with sunlight raking the ocean spray. Next, hit dreamy Búðakirkja (Gardsbrun 6, Budir)—the iconic black church framed by endless grasslands and a volcanic backdrop. Head over to Búðaklettur for moody shots of lava at the ocean’s edge. Circle up to Grundarfjardarbaer for Kirkjufell—one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains. Approach from the famous roadside waterfall for that insta-perfect “mountain mirror” angle. Mornings or sunsets here reward you with the most magical sky colors. Personal tip: If the weather’s clear, the wide-open roads around Borgarbyggd are stunning—take a pause, snap your ride cruising past snow-capped peaks and wild grasslands lit by soft Icelandic light. Pack your layers; sunny scenes can turn chilly fast! Be careful near cliff edges and bring waterproof boots for wet grasses or snow. Many roads are remote—keep your tank topped up and snacks handy. #Snæfellsnes #Iceland #RoadTrip #Nature #PhotoSpot

Snæfellsnes Peninsula is known as the "Iceland in Miniature," featuring many small scenic spots perfect for photography, including sea arches, volcanoes, and Nordic-style churches. As our first stop on the counterclockwise ring road trip, we stayed one night in a small town next to Hat Mountain and visited these spots in order (introduced in reverse order). Photos 2, 8: The red house used for vision tests is mostly visited by Chinese tourists. Park at the coordinates shown in navigation map 16. You need to have a person stand on the uphill road near the church, then the photographer steps back and uses a telephoto lens to shoot. If there are many people, everyone usually queues up voluntarily. Note that if coming from the west, navigation might direct you to a rutted road; non-off-road vehicles should be cautious. There is actually a paved road available. Photos 3, 7, 11, 12, 13: Arnarstapi village and sea arches, see navigation map 17. Parking is free; restrooms require a card. The hole in photo 3 is actually below ground level, so it’s not very obvious—you need to look for the "stone bridge" location on the map. The hill and small houses opposite the parking lot are also beautiful (photo 13). The round holes in photos 7 and 11 are Gatklettur, which is hard to miss. Photos 4, 8, 10, 15: The black church and seaside volcano, see navigation map 18. The church is not open inside and is crowded; you need to remove passersby from photos. Drone flights are not allowed at the church, so if you want aerial shots, fly farther away. On the southwest side, there is a red and green striped volcanic cone that looks magical—you can fly over to take photos. Photos 6, 14: Seal beach, navigate to Ytri Tunga Beach. Parking requires payment at the machine. Seals are afraid of people and will run away if you get too close. If you don’t have a telephoto lens, it’s better not to go.

#Halloween2023 Monster Coast📸: Located in Snæfellsnes National Park, it is made of volcanic lava. Seen from a distance, these two jagged basalt columns, one high and one low, standing on the shore look like two monsters with bared fangs and claws ready to come ashore, which is quite interesting. Malarrif Lighthouse: Standing on the blue coast. The lighthouse was built in 1917 and rebuilt in 1947. Hellnar Town📸: The Red Church⛪ is a popular check-in spot, but unfortunately we missed it. You can see the sea cave from the other side at Hellenar View Point📸. There is a fish soup restaurant in the town, many people come here to eat there, the taste is really good😘. #IcelandAttractions #IcelandTravel

Before visiting Snæfellsnes Peninsula, I thought I already knew what Iceland looked like. Waterfalls. Black sand. Volcanoes. Glaciers. Small fishing villages. I had already seen many of them in different parts of the country. So I wasn't expecting the peninsula to surprise me that much. But after driving around Snæfellsnes, I realized something. It wasn't one particular attraction that made the journey special. It was the fact that so many different sides of Iceland appeared along the same road. One moment I was looking at a famous mountain. Then I was standing beside a black beach. A little later, I was walking along dramatic sea cliffs. And in the distance, the snow-covered Snæfellsjökull seemed to follow me wherever I went. 🚗 The Road Around Snæfellsnes The Snæfellsnes Peninsula stretches into the Atlantic Ocean in western Iceland. It is often described as a place where many of Iceland's landscapes can be experienced within one region. After driving around it, I could understand why. The road itself became part of the experience. There were long stretches where I could see nothing but open fields and mountains. Then the coastline suddenly appeared. Small houses sat beside the water. Sheer cliffs dropped toward the sea. And every few kilometres, I found another reason to stop the car. That was what I liked most. I didn't feel like I was simply travelling between attractions. The entire peninsula felt like one long journey. 🏔️ Kirkjufell: The Mountain I Had Seen Before I Arrived If there is one place most people associate with Snæfellsnes, it is probably Kirkjufell. I had already seen photographs of it many times before coming to Iceland. The mountain has a distinctive shape, rising beside the coast near the town of Grundarfjörður. In photographs, it looks almost too perfect. So naturally, I wanted to see if it looked as impressive in real life. It did. But what surprised me was how different it felt when I stood there. Photographs usually show Kirkjufell together with the small waterfall in front of it. That is the classic composition. But when I walked around the area, I realized the mountain itself was only part of the scenery. The sea was nearby. The surrounding mountains changed the perspective. And the light kept moving across the landscape. I took the classic photograph. Then I stayed longer. 💦 Kirkjufellsfoss: The View That Made Me Understand the Hype The nearby Kirkjufellsfoss isn't one of Iceland's largest waterfalls. But it doesn't need to be. Its importance comes from the composition. Water in the foreground. Kirkjufell rising behind it. Mountains around the scene. And the Icelandic sky above everything. It is one of those rare landscapes where nature seems to have arranged itself for photography. I waited for a moment when the light became softer. Then the clouds moved. The mountain looked completely different. That was when I realized why people return here more than once. The same view can feel completely different depending on the weather and season. 🌋 Snæfellsjökull: The Giant at the End of the Peninsula Further along the peninsula, another landmark began to dominate the landscape: Snæfellsjökull. This glacier-capped volcano rises at the western tip of Snæfellsnes. From different parts of the peninsula, its shape can appear in the distance. Sometimes clearly. Sometimes partly hidden by clouds. Sometimes completely disappearing. I liked that. It felt as though the mountain was always somewhere in the background without demanding attention. And unlike the more famous glaciers I had visited elsewhere in Iceland, Snæfellsjökull felt deeply connected to the identity of the peninsula itself. It is not simply a mountain. It is part of the character of this entire region. 🌊 Arnarstapi: Where the Land Meets the Atlantic One of my favourite stops was Arnarstapi, a small coastal settlement known for its dramatic cliffs and rock formations. This was where the scenery changed again. Instead of looking inland at mountains, I was standing above the Atlantic. The coastline was rugged. Waves crashed against the rocks below. And sea stacks rose from the water. There is a walking route connecting Arnarstapi and nearby Hellnar, and walking along this coastline was one of the most enjoyable parts of my time on the peninsula. I wasn't trying to reach somewhere quickly. I simply followed the path. Every few minutes, another viewpoint appeared. 🌊 The Coastline Was More Impressive Than I Expected What made the Arnarstapi coastline memorable was its variety. There were dark volcanic cliffs. Natural rock arches. Sea stacks. Green grass above the rocks. And the deep blue-grey Atlantic stretching toward the horizon. It felt raw. There were no elaborate buildings or huge tourist facilities. Just the coastline. The wind was strong when I visited, and the sound of the waves made the place feel much larger than it actually was. I stood there for quite a while just watching the ocean. This was one of those moments when I understood why I had come to Iceland in the first place. 🖤 Djúpalónssandur: A Beach Without the Usual Colours Another unforgettable stop was Djúpalónssandur, a black pebble beach on the western side of the peninsula. It looked completely different from the colourful beaches I was used to seeing. There was no golden sand. Instead, the shoreline was covered with smooth black stones. The waves were powerful. Dark cliffs surrounded the beach. And the whole place had a quiet, almost mysterious atmosphere. Walking down toward the shore, I could hear the Atlantic before I could fully see it. Then the beach opened in front of me. It was beautiful in a very Icelandic way. Not soft. Not tropical. But dramatic. 🪨 The Black Pebbles Tell Part of the Story Djúpalónssandur is not just a scenic beach. The shoreline is covered with volcanic stones shaped by the Atlantic over time. Some of them are almost perfectly smooth. Others are dark and irregular. I found myself looking down at the ground as much as I was looking toward the ocean. It reminded me that Iceland's landscapes are constantly being shaped. Volcanoes create the rock. Water changes it. Wind moves it. And the ocean slowly reshapes the coastline. That geological story is visible almost everywhere on Snæfellsnes. 🏘️ Small Fishing Villages Along the Way One of the things I enjoyed most about Snæfellsnes was the small villages. Places like Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður and Arnarstapi gave the road trip a completely different rhythm. These aren't cities filled with major attractions. They are small communities closely connected to the sea. Colourful houses. Harbours. Fishing boats. Simple cafés. Mountains behind everything. After spending time surrounded by dramatic nature, walking through one of these villages felt surprisingly relaxing. I could have coffee. Watch boats in the harbour. Walk along the water. Then continue driving. ⚓ Stykkishólmur Felt Like a Different Iceland Of all the villages, Stykkishólmur especially caught my attention. The town sits around a natural harbour and is known for its colourful houses and maritime character. It felt more polished than some of the smaller settlements I had passed earlier, but it still retained the atmosphere of a traditional Icelandic coastal town. I walked around the harbour and looked back toward the town. The colourful buildings against the water and surrounding landscape created another side of Snæfellsnes that I hadn't expected. After so much dramatic nature, the human side of the peninsula became just as interesting. 🐴 The Quiet Countryside Between the Famous Stops Perhaps my favourite memories weren't even from the major attractions. They came from the road between them. Icelandic horses standing beside fences. Sheep in open fields. Small waterfalls running down distant slopes. Farmhouses surrounded by empty land. Roads with almost no traffic. And mountains appearing behind every bend. This was the part that made me want to slow down. Snæfellsnes doesn't need to be rushed. The scenery between the famous locations is beautiful enough to deserve attention. 📸 How I Would Photograph Snæfellsnes If you're bringing a camera, I would recommend leaving some flexibility in your itinerary. Kirkjufell is the obvious photograph. But don't stop there. At Arnarstapi, focus on the coastline rather than only the village. At Djúpalónssandur, include the black stones and ocean together. Around the villages, look for colourful buildings against the mountains. And whenever you see Snæfellsjökull clearly, stop. The light can change very quickly in Iceland. A scene that looks ordinary under grey skies can become completely different when sunlight breaks through the clouds. 🌦️ Weather Is Part of the Experience I learned again that Icelandic weather can completely change a landscape. One minute, the sky can be bright. Then clouds roll over the mountains. The sea becomes darker. The wind gets stronger. And suddenly the entire peninsula feels more dramatic. Instead of fighting the weather, I started accepting it. Some of my favourite photographs were taken under clouds rather than perfect blue skies. The changing conditions made the landscape feel alive. 🚗 A Few Things I Would Know Before Visiting 1. Give Snæfellsnes at least a full day If you want to stop frequently and enjoy the villages and coastline, rushing through in a few hours isn't ideal. 2. Don't only plan around Kirkjufell It is famous for a reason, but the peninsula has much more to offer. 3. Bring waterproof layers The coastal weather can be windy and wet. 4. Wear proper shoes Some coastal paths can be uneven and slippery. 5. Be careful near cliffs and waves The Atlantic can be powerful, especially around exposed coastal areas. 6. Leave time for unexpected stops This is probably the most important one. The best view may not be the one you planned to visit. ❤️ My Final Impression Before coming to Snæfellsnes, I thought I was coming to see Kirkjufell. But Kirkjufell was only the beginning. I found black beaches. Dramatic cliffs. A glacier-covered volcano. Quiet fishing villages. Open countryside. And long roads where the landscape seemed to change every few minutes. That was what made the peninsula special for me. It wasn't one perfect attraction. It was the variety. Some places show you one side of Iceland.
Snæfellsnes made me feel like I had travelled through several different Icelands in one road trip. 📍 Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland #Snaefellsnes #SnaefellsnesPeninsulaa #Snæfellsnes #Iceland #WestIceland #Kirkjufell #Kirkjufellsfoss #Snaefellsjokull #Arnarstapi #Djupalonssandur #Stykkisholmur #IcelandRoadTrip #IcelandTravel

Want to see a little bit of everything Iceland has to offer in one day? Head to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. 🚗🇮🇸 Often called “Iceland in Miniature”, Snæfellsnes packs volcanoes, glaciers, black beaches, cliffs, fishing villages and waterfalls into one incredible road trip. 🚗 Start from Reykjavík early and drive west toward the peninsula. 📍 1. Ytri Tunga 🦭 Your first stop is a golden-sand beach — unusual for Iceland — and a great place to look for seals relaxing along the coast. 📍 2. Búðakirkja ⛪ The tiny black wooden church of Búðir is one of Iceland’s most photographed churches. Sitting completely alone between lava fields and mountains, it makes a perfect quick photo stop. 📍 3. Arnarstapi 🌊 Walk along the dramatic coastline and see enormous basalt cliffs, sea arches and crashing Atlantic waves. The short coastal path toward Hellnar is especially beautiful. 🥾 📍 4. Lóndrangar 🪨 Two enormous volcanic rock pillars rise dramatically from the ocean. They’re remnants of an ancient volcanic crater and one of the most recognisable sights on the peninsula. 📍 5. Djúpalónssandur 🖤 Descend through the lava fields to this wild black-pebble beach. You’ll find strange rock formations, dramatic cliffs and the remains of a shipwreck scattered along the shore. 🌊 📍 6. Saxhóll Crater 🌋 Climb the staircase to the top of this ancient volcanic crater for a panoramic view across the lava fields and surrounding coastline. 📍 7. Kirkjufell 🏔️ Finish with Iceland’s most photographed mountain. Kirkjufell’s distinctive shape became famous around the world, especially after appearing in Game of Thrones. The nearby waterfall makes the classic Iceland photo. 📸 🌊 And then drive back to Reykjavík It’s a long day, but the variety is what makes Snæfellsnes so special. ⏱️ Allow around 11–13 hours from Reykjavík if you want to see the main sights without rushing. ⭐ Route: Reykjavík → Ytri Tunga → Búðakirkja → Arnarstapi → Lóndrangar → Djúpalónssandur → Saxhóll → Kirkjufell → Reykjavík 🌋 Volcanoes. 🧊 Glacier. 🖤 Black beaches. 🦭 Seals. 🌊 Cliffs. 🏔️ Mountains. One peninsula, one epic road trip — and a whole lot of Iceland in miniature. 🇮🇸❤️

#bucketlistdestinations Svörtuloft is the black lava cliff at Snæfellsnes’ west tip, 214 km from Reykjavík via Route 1 → 54 → 574. The small gravel car park (free, ~20 spaces) fills by 10 am in July. I came at 18:30—orange lighthouse glowing against black rock, moss fields humming with wind. The lava is 90% coated in emerald moss, but stepping off the marked path kills 200-year-old growth. A sign says “Mosi er líf”(moss is life); rangers fine off-path drivers. Walk the cliff edge clockwise toward the natural arch Gatklettur—40 min round trip, no guardrails, 60 m drop to the Greenland Sea. I wore trail runners, slipped on wet moss, caught a rusted fence. Boots next time. The lighthouse (Skálasnagi) has no interior access, just photo value. No entry fee, no ticket, card useless here—bring 4,000 ISK cash for the Ólafsvík petrol station coffee 10 km back. Kindness moment: a local photographer waited while I crawled back from the edge, then showed me the exact ledge where puffins nest in August. Should moss that takes centuries to grow be fenced, or just trusted to human decency?

Today's weather finally cooperated! Without the fierce wind and rain from before, we could finally get a clear view of the magnificent and wild coastline of Arnarstapi. Strolling along the coastal trail, on one side, furious giant waves crashed against the Gatklettur basalt cliffs, while on the other side stood snow-capped basalt peaks. We were also lucky enough to catch "angel rays" (crepuscular rays) piercing through the clouds and spilling onto the sea along the way. The sheer awe of that moment is truly beyond words! The standalone cottage by the coast is the absolute highlight. Standing amidst the desolate meadows between the mountains and the sea, it pushes Iceland's unique aesthetic of solitude to the absolute limit. 📸 Photo Log: Pic 2|Bárður Snæfellsás Stone Statue: 【Fun Fact 💡】This giant statue built from stacked stones represents Bárður, the half-man, half-giant guardian deity from Icelandic Saga literature! Legend has it that he is the protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and eventually retreated into the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Pic 3|Seagulls Circling the Coast: Flocks of seagulls soaring under the overcast sky, with countless seabirds nesting and resting among the steep cliffs. Pic 4|Basalt Columns and Fierce Waves: Surging waves fiercely battering the black columnar basalt, stirring up bursts of white foam—absolutely breathtaking to see in person! Pic 5|Trail Backed by Snow Mountains: Golden meadows stretching towards the sharp peak of Mt. Stapafell in the distance, offering a landscape full of rich layers. Pic 6|Gatklettur Sea Arch: Arnarstapi's most famous Gatklettur (stone arch) is a masterpiece of nature's uncanny workmanship. The sight of waves crashing through the archway is incredibly majestic. Pic 7|Angel Rays Over the Sea: The clouds split open, and a vertical beam of light spilled over the ocean, looking just like a descending miracle. Pic 8|Waterfall, Cliffs, and Snow Mountains: A stream surging straight down from the black sea cliffs into the ocean, set against a backdrop of rolling, snow-covered mountain ranges. Pic 1|The Lonely House at the Edge of the World: My absolute favorite shot! The white, red-roofed cottage perched on the cliff edge, with mountains at its back and facing the sea—it's the ultimate dream hideaway. Pics 9–10|Colorful Stapafell Mountain Area: Minerals endow the mountainside with rich rainbow colors. Paired with the lonely cottage at the foot of the mountain, every casual snap turns into a cinematic landscape masterpiece. 📍 Locations: Arnarstapi Cliff Walk, Iceland 🇮🇸 Gatklettur Arc 🌊 Bárður Snæfellsás Statue 🗿

🏔️ When it comes to Iceland, most people immediately think of soaking in the Blue Lagoon or snapping photos at the Golden Circle. But true travelers who know how to explore will quietly add a couple of extra days to their itinerary— to visit a narrow peninsula known as the "Iceland in miniature." It’s a microcosm of Iceland’s entire geology and landscape 🧊 Glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, black sand beaches, sea cliffs, mossy green lands… Only about 100 km long, driving around it delivers a more intense visual impact than touring the whole country. ❄️ Summer is the best time to visit In July, the peninsula’s days are ridiculously long. At 1 AM, the sky still glows with a soft orange-pink afterglow. Sunrise and sunset almost blend together, creating the legendary "midnight sun." What does that mean? It means you get two days in one. No need to rush your schedule. You can even go out at midnight and still have enough light for photos. 🚗 How to get around? Here’s the essential info Start from Reykjavik and take Route 1, which passes through an underwater tunnel. The dim yellow lighting inside feels like a sci-fi movie scene. After exiting, switch to Route 54, the coastal highway that’s the peninsula’s main artery. The entire road is paved, so a regular car can handle it easily. But note ⚠️ there’s a gravel section on Route 56 on the return trip. If your car has low clearance, it’s better to return via Route 54. In 2026, Route 54 is well maintained along the entire stretch. It’s fully open in summer with no road closures. Car rental recommendation: start with a mid-size SUV. Iceland’s summer winds are strong, and light cars feel unstable. Keep your gas tank at least half full, as gas stations on the peninsula are spaced far apart. The nearest stations are about 40–50 km apart, so don’t take chances. 🗺️ How to plan your route? Counterclockwise is king Drive Route 54 counterclockwise, heading straight to the north coast first. Check off the most iconic spots, then slowly explore inland. This pace keeps the energy high without wearing you out. 📍 First tier · must-see highlights |Hat Mountain + Church Mountain waterfall| At 463 meters elevation, a 5-minute walk across the bridge from the opposite parking lot. With the waterfall in the foreground and the mountain as the backdrop, photographers worldwide snap hundreds of shots here. In summer, the waterfall is full and mist mixes with lupine flowers. That scene is simply legendary. Parking costs 1,000 ISK and includes restroom access. |Stykkishólmur town| Filming location for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, with a street lined by colorful houses. Climb to the lighthouse on the hilltop for panoramic views of the town and fjord. The strong wind blows all your worries away. In summer, the harbor fills with small fishing boats, full of local life. 📍 Second tier · for deep explorers only |Arnarstapi coastal boardwalk| Walk the wooden path along the cliffs in a full loop. Below are dozens of meters-high basalt sea stacks. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks echoes through the valley. That soundscape alone can reset your mind after 10 minutes. The boardwalk is flat and easy, about 40 minutes total. |Djúpalónssandur black sand beach| Not the fine black sand like Vik. Here, volcanic rock pebbles polished black by the sea. Scattered along the shore are "lifting stones" fishermen used centuries ago to test strength. Four stones range from light to heavy, the heaviest weighing 154 kg. Try lifting one yourself—it’s super fun. |Lóndrangar sea stacks| Two giant basalt pillars rise straight from the sea to the sky. From afar, they look like two lighthouses guarding the coast. The nearby cliff viewpoint offers wide-open views. The wind is strong, so stay behind the safety rails and don’t climb over. 📍 Third tier · go if you have time |Búðir black church| A small, pure black wooden church standing alone on a lava field. Nothing else around, just this black building. On cloudy days, the atmosphere is cinematic. In summer, purple lupine flowers bloom around the church. The contrast of black and purple is stunning. |Snæfellsjökull glacier| The entrance to the center of the earth in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The glacier sits atop a volcano—ice and fire literally coexist. In summer, you can hike close to the glacier edge within the national park. No special gear needed, but wear hiking boots. The ground is slippery and rocky, flip-flops are not recommended. 🛏️ Where to stay? Accommodations are concentrated in a few small towns. Options are available in Grundarfjörður, Ólafsvík, and Stykkishólmur. Summer is peak season, so book at least two months in advance. For scenic views, choose a spot on the north coast by the sea. Open your window to fjords and distant mountains, with midnight sun light streaming in. Falling asleep in that light is an experience you can’t replicate elsewhere. There are also scattered lodgings near the national park in the south. Quieter and wilder, perfect for those wanting to fully escape the crowds. No matter where you stay, remember this: bring a sleep mask! The midnight sun is incredibly bright, and without a mask, you won’t sleep. ⏰ Time allocation suggestions One-day fast tour: Hat Mountain → black church → black sand beach → Arnarstapi → return Two-day immersive tour: Day 1 full north coast + town lighthouse sunset / Day 2 south coast national park + glacier hike Three-day slow travel: add golden beach Skarðsvík, red-roofed church, octopus statue, and other hidden spots 🎒 Summer packing list A windbreaker is essential, not optional. Iceland’s summer feels like 10–15°C, but wind can drop it to 5°C. Waterproof hiking boots > sneakers > all other shoes. Sunglasses are a must—the midnight sun’s UV rays are no joke. Start with a 20,000 mAh power bank; your phone battery will drain after a day of photos. This peninsula is the kind of place where— before you go, you think "Iceland in miniature" is just marketing. After you return, you tell everyone, "If you don’t go, it’s like you never visited Iceland."

Arnarstapi is a place must visit on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is a small coastal village, but what I really like about this place is that once you park the car, you can start exploring right away. There are several viewpoints within walking distance, so it feels very easy and relaxed. After parking, we simply followed the walking path along the coast. The trail here is quite flat, so you do not need to prepare for a difficult hike. It feels more like a scenic coastal walk. Along the way, you will see wide open grassy fields, dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and many small photo spots. The most famous spot here is Gatklettur, also known as the Arch Rock. It is a natural stone arch shaped by the Atlantic waves, and it is one of the most iconic photo spots in Arnarstapi. When we visited, we were so lucky to see a full rainbow right over the cliffs. Iceland is one of those places where you often get to see rainbows because the weather changes so quickly, but this one felt extra special. The rainbow appeared in the perfect spot, exactly above the coastline and photo viewpoint, making the whole scene look almost unreal. If you have more time, you can also walk the coastal trail from Arnarstapi to Hellnar. The trail is around 2.5 km one way, or about 5 km if you walk there and back. It usually takes around 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace. Other Interesting Stops on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula · Saxhóll Crater is a nice quick stop if you want to see a volcanic crater without doing a difficult hike. There is a staircase leading up to the rim, and from the top you can see wide lava fields, mountains, and the surrounding landscape of Snæfellsnes. · Lóndrangar is another must-stop, and it is not far from Arnarstapi. I would recommend stopping here before going to Arnarstapi. The highlight is the pair of dramatic basalt sea stacks rising from the coast. · Ólafsvík is a small town on the north side of Snæfellsnes. Around this area, you can find beautiful coastal views, black sand beach viewpoints, and a peaceful fishing-town atmosphere. · Ytri Tunga is a golden-sand beach on the south side of Snæfellsnes, best known as one of the easiest places to see seals in Iceland. #naturalwonders #icelandtrip #iceland #arnarstapi #snaefellsnes

Gatklettur Arch on Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula isn't massive in scale, but strangely enough, it's a place you just can't take your eyes off of. Through the opening in the rock, you can see the ocean and sky framed together, and the scene shifts with every different angle. That's why the vibe feels entirely different even when standing in the exact same spot. Especially when the waves crash in, the view inside the arch transforms. It's the kind of spot where you'll want to stand and watch for a while rather than just taking a quick glance and walking away.
