Spent five days in Almaty and left my heart at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains.
To be honest, I was a bit nervous before going to Kazakhstan, as not many people I know have been there. But by the second day after landing, I was proven wrong—this isn't some "off-the-beaten-path" destination, it's an underrated treasure: snow-capped mountains, lakes, canyons, the scent of apples everywhere, and prices that are ridiculously cheap. Chinese passports get 30 days of visa-free travel, so you can just pack up and go. Here is my tried-and-tested 5-day, 4-night itinerary👇
🚗 Visa and transportation
China and Kazakhstan have a mutual visa-free agreement for 30-day stays. You just need a passport with at least 6 months of validity, and you'll get a stamp upon arrival. It takes about 20 minutes to taxi from Almaty Airport to the city center. Use Yandex Go (the Russian version of Didi); it's cheap and you won't get ripped off. For getting around the city, the metro and walking are plenty, and taxis are usually around 10 RMB.
🗺️ 5-day itinerary (relaxed pace)
Day 1: Panfilov Park > Ascension Cathedral (the entire wooden church was built without a single nail, and the murals are breathtaking) > Museum of National Musical Instruments. In the evening, take the cable car up to Kok Tobe Hill for a 360-degree view of the city and wait for a sunset over the snow-capped mountains. The night view is more stunning than you'd imagine.
Day 2: Big Almaty Lake, an alpine lake at an altitude of 2,500 meters. The water is as blue as a gemstone, and the reflection of the snow-capped mountains is legendary. In the afternoon, carpool to Charyn Canyon. The red rock walls stretch for kilometers—it's known as the "Little Grand Canyon." A two-hour hike, and every photo you take looks like a masterpiece.
Day 3: Shymbulak Ski Resort. It's cool even in summer. Take the cable car straight to the top, where snow-capped peaks and green grass coexist—it's magical. On the way down, stop by Medeu, the world's highest outdoor skating rink. Even if you don't skate, having a coffee in the valley is delightful.
Day 4: Visit the Central State Museum to see the "Golden Man" (a national treasure-level golden warrior) > take a stroll around Republic Square > in the afternoon, dive into the Green Bazaar. Piles of horse sausage, dried fruits, cheese, and fresh fruit create a vibrant local atmosphere. Remember to haggle when buying things.
Day 5: Sleep in, find a cafe in the city to relax, buy some chocolate and honey as souvenirs, and head home.
🍜 Food you won't be able to stop eating
Kazakh cuisine is a meat lover's paradise: beshbarmak (hand-eaten horse meat noodles, the national dish), kazy (horse sausage, the more you chew, the better it tastes), lamb skewers with naan, lagman (pulled noodles), plov, and manty (large dumplings). Pair it with salty milk tea, and you can eat your fill for 20–30 RMB per person. You must try the freshly made cheese and honey at the Green Bazaar—it's sweet enough to melt your heart.
📸 Must-visit photo spots
Big Almaty Lake (sapphire lake surface + snow-capped mountains); Charyn Canyon (red rock walls, wear light-colored clothes for maximum contrast); Kok Tobe Hill summit (city view + sunset over snow-capped mountains); Ascension Cathedral (details of the wood carvings and murals); Shymbulak cable car (above the snow line); Green Bazaar (colorful fruit stalls, vibrant portraits).
💡 Sincere tips
Download the Yandex trio: Go for taxis, Maps for navigation, and Translate for language (it's a Russian-speaking environment, so a translation app is a must). The Green Bazaar and small street shops only accept cash, so exchange for Tenge in advance; the exchange rate in the city is better than at the airport. There's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a jacket for the mountains even in summer. Most museums are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. The altitude is 2,000+ meters, so pack sunscreen and take it slow. Most cafes and restaurants in the city accept cards; it's quite modern.
When I left, I made sure to sit by Big Almaty Lake for a little longer. How should I put it? This city, held in the palm of the Tian Shan mountains, is quiet, affordable, beautiful, and visa-free. Next time I go to Kazakhstan, I'm going to include Astana in my plans too 🏔️
