Europe has plenty of famous destinations, but some of my favorite trips were to countries that rarely get the same attention as France, Italy, or Switzerland. These three genuinely surprised me. Slovenia was my first pick. I loved wandering around Ljubljana, with its riverside cafés and relaxed atmosphere, but the real highlight was Lake Bled. I also made time for Lake Bohinj, which felt quieter and more natural. Then came Albania. Tirana was lively and unexpectedly fun, but I enjoyed the coast even more. Berat, with its white Ottoman-era houses climbing the hillside, was one of the most memorable stops of the trip. My third choice is Montenegro. I spent time exploring Kotor, where dramatic mountains surround the bay, then drove along the coast toward Budva. The scenery alone made the journey worthwhile. A small, rustic viewing platform (which you can just see) lets you get right above the source. Divers have gone down over 50 meters, and the pressure is so intense the water just pumps out. Albania surprised me in the best way. It’s a country with a very unique atmosphere and a fascinating mix of influences. First, the architecture and infrastructure reflect different historical periods. You can see European-style buildings, remnants of the communist era, and even traces of the Ottoman past. Cities like Berat show this especially well. There is also a strong Italian cultural influence. Mornings often start with a cappuccino and breakfast at a café, while evenings are about aperitivo — it’s very common to see people enjoying an Aperol Spritz in bars and restaurants. Some people describe Albania as a “strict Muslim country,” but from my experience this is misleading. Yes, many people are Muslim and you can see beautiful mosques, and the country historically had connections to the Ottoman Empire. However, Albania today feels very open and diverse rather than strict. What impressed me most was the hospitality. People were incredibly kind. During my stay, small gestures happened often — for example, a hotel administrator simply gave me a Pepsi for free, and once I was told I didn’t need to pay for breakfast. These moments really show how welcoming locals can be. Another great thing is that English is widely spoken, especially in Tirana. Even people from the older generation often spoke English, so communication was very easy. In smaller towns fewer people may speak it, but in the capital it’s rarely a problem. When to visit Albania? I traveled there in winter, so my trip was mostly about walking tours and exploring cities. If you want to swim or enjoy the beaches of the Albanian Riviera, summer is the best time. However, summers in Tirana can be very hot (sometimes 30–40°C). So if your goal is to explore cities, walk around, and visit historical places, spring or autumn might be the most comfortable seasons. But if you want a beach vacation with beautiful landscapes and swimming, summer in southern Albania is perfect. Overall, Albania is a country with warm people, interesting history, and beautiful places — and it definitely deserves more attention from travelers.

8:50 AM took a taxi to the City of a Thousand Windows: Berat. p1 It was already 12:30 PM, so we found the 9th ranked restaurant in this small town. The taste was average, nothing special. p2 At 2 PM, continued checking in, climbed up the cobblestone streets of Berat Old Town until finally reaching the highest point, Berat Castle. p3 Then headed to the Onufri Museum. This guy was a local painter, specializing in iconography. p4 Next, went to the Holy Trinity Church, but it was closed. Nearby is the site of the Red Mosque, with only a large chimney remaining. I guess it used to be the minaret? p5 A short walk straight ahead leads to the viewing platform, where from the foot of the mountain you can see the high-flying Eagle Flag, overlooking the entire Berat town, exactly like a drone’s perspective. p6 Arrived in Durrës after 7 PM, the sea was no longer visible, the Archaeological Museum was closed, and the Venetian Tower of the castle had closed in the afternoon, so we could only take exterior photos. It’s round and looks like a gas tank. A few hundred meters ahead is the ancient Roman amphitheater, but it was pitch dark and hard to see, and it felt like ruins with no reconstruction. p7 Stayed in Durrës for only 10 minutes before driving back to the hotel in the capital. Albania🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret The mosque was originally closed when we arrived. Just as we were about to leave, an elder came up and asked us if we wanted to go in for a visit. He then opened the door and let us in. He briefly explained that this was a king's mosque. It has been around for more than 500 years, and its square appearance is different from what we have seen before. The interior is made of bright colors. I think the most special thing is that the small arch in the middle looks very similar to Thai design, which is what I saw in the mosque. There are also some archaeological and historical relics around that can be visited. Albania 🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret mosque we arrived when it was closed. As we were about to leave, a friendly man offered to let us in. He explained that this mosque, built for a king, has been standing for over 500 years. I used to think a European trip always meant choosing between expensive hotels and expensive meals. Then I spent time in Albania, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia, and my view changed completely. These three made it possible to travel comfortably without constantly checking my wallet. Recent 2026 travel cost comparisons also place them among Europe’s most affordable destinations. Albania was probably the biggest surprise. I loved wandering around Berat, exploring Gjirokastër, and spending a lazy afternoon along the Ksamil coast. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and accommodation felt reasonable compared with Western Europe. In Bulgaria, I based myself around Sofia and took time to explore Plovdiv. I especially enjoyed the old streets, colorful houses, and relaxed café culture. It felt like I was getting a lot of Europe without the usual price tag. Then there was North Macedonia, where Lake Ohrid completely stole my attention. I also explored Skopje and took a short trip into Matka Canyon. The scenery was beautiful, but what I remember most was how relaxed everything felt.
