It's nestled in the westernmost Austrian province of Vorarlberg, serving as the vibrant, historical hub at the intersection of five intersecting mountain valleys. Known for its colorful old town infrastructure, proximity to dramatic gorges, and status as a legendary chocolate manufacturing center, it offers an exceptional balance of medieval culture and rugged outdoor adventure. Historical Altstadt and Cultural Attractions are the following: Schloss Gayenhofen: Overlooking the town, this elegant 18th-century Baroque castle stands on the site of a former medieval fortress. While it serves today as an official district government headquarters, its exterior architecture and manicured grounds offer some of the most striking photo opportunities in the area. St. Lawrence Church (St. Laurentiuskirche): Sitting directly alongside the castle, this historic landmark dates originally back to the 14th century and was rebuilt in 1514 following a major town fire. It features a distinctive onion-dome tower visible throughout the valley and an interior adorned with beautiful black marble altars. The Gates and City Walls: Exploring the core of the town reveals intact architectural fortifications from the Middle Ages. You can walk beneath the Oberes Tor (Upper Gate), which proudly houses the Stadtmuseum Bludenz, showcasing regional history, artifacts, and stories of the town's defensive past. Historic Fountains and Alleys: The vibrant, pedestrian-friendly lanes of the Altstadt are punctuated by historic meeting hubs like the Bernhard-Riedmiller-Brunnen and the centrally located Nepomukbrunnen. The Milka Chocolate Factory and Shop: It is home to the primary manufacturing site of Milka, and the distinct smell of sweet cocoa often drifts through the mountain air. You can explore the specialized Milka Lädele shop to pick up unique merchandise and extensive configurations of sweets unavailable elsewhere. Muttersberg (The Sun Balcony): Known locally as the "Sun Balcony" of Bludenz, visitors can catch a panoramic cable car up to the Muttersberg mountain high above town. The summit station opens up to a vast network of family-friendly hiking trails, alpine single-tracks for mountain biking, and wide-reaching views overlooking the surrounding peaks. It's was good hiking there. #travel #citycenter #church #citywall

Located at an elevation of 1,970 meters in Vorarlberg's Brandnertal, Lünersee is a stunning pumped-storage reservoir framed by the rugged limestone peaks of the Rätikon mountain range. My journey started with an ÖBB train ride to Bludenz (€48 from Innsbruck), followed by PostBus 580 to the Brand-Lünerseebahn stop (€5). From there, I hopped on the cable car (round trip: €26 for adults, €15.60 for children, based on 2026 prices; operating daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, May 23 to October 26). The welcoming Douglass Hütte sits right at the dam (Alpine Club non-member dorms are ~€40, half-board is ~€60; advance reservations recommended). The famed mossy ridge is part of the scenic 6.25-kilometer lake loop: the northern shore features seep rocks covered in Racomitrium and Polytrichum mosses, dwarf pines (Pinus mugo) dot the western edge, and the towering 2,965-meter Schesaplana wall rises due south. I took the early 7:30 AM cable car up, walked the circuit clockwise in 1 hour and 50 minutes, and settled in for a coffee at the Douglass Hütte by 9:30 AM while the lake was perfectly glass-flat. If you're chasing glacier views, extending your hike to the Totalp Hütte adds about two hours to your trek. A couple of travel mistakes to avoid: I visited on October 1st, only to find the cable car operating strictly on weekends—daily service runs from late May through September. Also, I paid cash at the hut when they actually accepted cards; still, it's smart to carry around €30 in cash, as the Alpe Lünersee snack stall is cash-only. Would you rather take the cable car up for a relaxed loop around the dam and a coffee at Douglass Hütte, or push onward to Totalp Hütte to conquer the Schesaplana ridge?

#summervacay Silvretta’s switchbacks are thrilling to drive, but I made sure to stop and savor every view. Glacial lakes, snow-streaked peaks, and wooden huts—this road is pure alpine bliss. I pulled over to hike a short loop trail and found myself all alone in a meadow filled with wildflowers. Later, I had fresh soup and bread at a mountain inn with cows grazing nearby. The drive of a lifetime. #summervacay
