As the "Summer Capital of China," this place is truly the ultimate summer retreat—not only cool but also full of endless delicious food and breathtaking scenery. 🕌 Ta'er Monastery|The Artistic Hall of Tibetan Buddhism A must-visit in Xining is Ta'er Monastery! With its red walls and golden roofs, prayer corridors, and devoted worshippers, every corner here is filled with a sacred atmosphere. The gentle June sunlight shines on the golden roofs, casting a divine glow—truly stunning. 🙏 Highlights at Ta'er Monastery: · Butter Sculptures: The top three treasures of Ta'er Monastery, where monks carve exquisite Buddha statues and stories from butter in subzero temperatures—absolutely breathtaking · Murals: Vivid colors that remain lifelike even after hundreds of years · Embroidered Appliqué: Made from various colored silk ribbons, with a strong three-dimensional effect · Prayer Corridor: Join the devotees in circumambulating and feel the power of faith ⚠️ Notes: · No shorts or skirts above the knee allowed inside the temple · No photography facing the Buddha statues · Circumambulate clockwise · Admission is 80 RMB, recommended visit time is 3 hours 🌊 Qinghai Lake|The Sapphire of the Plateau Just a 1.5-hour drive from Xining, Qinghai Lake in June is breathtakingly beautiful! The deep blue water, golden rapeseed flowers, and distant snow-capped mountains make every photo a masterpiece. 💡 My exclusive tips: · Avoid the main Erlangjian Scenic Area: head to the herders’ trail on the west side of the lake, where for 20 RMB you can get close to the water with fewer people and better views · Sunrise at Heimahe: Wake up at 6 AM to watch the sun rise over the lake, with golden light spreading across the water · Watch the Huangyu fish migration at Gangcha: June is the season when thousands of Huangyu fish swim upstream—spectacular to see · Horseback riding by the lake: 50 RMB for half an hour, galloping across the grasslands is exhilarating 📸 Photo tips: · Wear white, red, or yellow dresses for strong contrast with the blue lake · Best lighting is in the morning and evening; avoid harsh midday sun · Bring props like hats, scarves, or balloons · Shoot from low angles to capture the "sky mirror" effect 🏔️ Guide Jiangla Scenic Area|A Hidden Pristine Gem This place is truly amazing! A 1.5-hour drive from Xining, in the poetic birthplace of "The Yellow River is clear in Guide," lies a nearly untouched natural sanctuary—the Jiangla Scenic Area. 🌿 Why Jiangla Scenic Area is so beautiful: · Forests, snow mountains, Danxia landforms, and crystal-clear Yellow River water blend perfectly here · Picnic under the riverside trees while listening to the flowing water · The river is so clear you can see small fish swimming · The air is incredibly fresh, a natural oxygen bar · Completely free! No entrance fee! In the afternoon, visit Guide National Geopark to see the Danxia landforms—the red mountains are spectacular under the sun, contrasting sharply with the clear Yellow River water, truly breathtaking. 🍜 Xining Cuisine|A Carb Lover’s Paradise Xining has so much delicious food—I ate until I was full every day! Must-try list: · Hand-pulled lamb: tender meat without any gamey taste, delicious with just salt · Qinghai old yogurt: thick like tofu pudding, sprinkled with sugar, sweet and tangy · Niangpi (cold skin noodles): chewy and smooth, chili oil fragrant but not spicy, very appetizing · Gaomianpian (hand-torn noodles): handmade noodles served with lamb soup, incredibly fresh · Sweet fermented barley drink: made from highland barley, sweet with a hint of alcohol, perfect for summer refreshment · Kangguo lamb: stir-fried potatoes, onions, and lamb, aromatic and mouthwatering Recommended places: · Moji Street: Majong Restaurant, offering a variety of snacks · Shuijing Alley: a local favorite food street · Delu Yogurt: the most famous yogurt shop in Xining 💭 Final thoughts During my days in Xining, I was surrounded by cool 20℃ breezes, eating delicious Northwestern cuisine and admiring stunning plateau scenery, feeling completely relaxed. There’s no humid heat like in the south, nor the fast pace of big cities—just the pleasure of slow living. If you want a place to escape the summer heat, come to Xining. Here you’ll find deep blue lakes, golden rapeseed flowers, devout faith, and endless delicious food. Trust me, once you come, you won’t want to leave. · -- Accommodation 🏨 Qinghai Lake Qizhi Wild Luxury Tent Hotel Exclusive private lakeside line at Jiangxi Valley, step outside your door to a "sky mirror" level lake view. Step into "Baojie" (Leopard Street) in Chengbai District, and you'll enter the heart of Xining's night economy. This is far more than just a food street; it's a fantastical theater centered around the "snow leopard" IP: adorable snow leopard sculptures and cartoon mascots adorn the streets, a hundred-person "Qingtang War Drum" formation parades to an exhilarating rhythm, and encountering performers in ethnic costumes is a common sight here. Over 200 businesses extend under the neon lights, offering everything from authentic Qinghai hotpot and mellow aged yogurt to popular snacks from all corners of the country, filling the air with a lively, bustling atmosphere. Equally exciting are trendy areas like Limeng and Tangdao, where ancient-style architecture intertwines with modern shopping malls, and street performers and themed parades fill the night with interaction and surprises. Travel Through Time: Encounter Living Hehuang Culture at the Grand Cultural Market During the day, Xining opens a door for you to deeply perceive its diverse culture. The "Xihai 2261 · Hehuang Cultural Grand Market," lasting for several months, is a cultural feast held in Xining Square. You can join a sunrise watch on Lajishan Mountain, where at nearly 4000 meters above sea level, you can witness the morning glow paint the sea of clouds red, sing patriotic songs with others, and feel a profound impact on your soul. Alternatively, choose a relaxing forest journey to Yaozigou National Forest Park, hiking through colorful woods and fully breathing in the tranquility and freshness of autumn. For photography enthusiasts, Xining is a paradise; whether it's the vibrant autumn foliage of Huzhu Beishan or the clear waters and red mountains of Guide, known as "the Yellow River is clear in Guide," you can easily capture stunning masterpieces. Let's start with the conclusion: Xining in September–October is truly magical. The crowded peak season of summer has faded, leaving plenty of space around Qinghai Lake, and you don't have to fight for a photo spot at Chaka Salt Lake. But if you ask me if it's "worth a special trip"—it is, but read this before you head out, or you might easily have a rough time 😭 Xining is the "Summer Capital of the Plateau." I originally thought it was just a transit stop, but the butter sculptures at Ta'er Monastery and the blue of Qinghai Lake completely stopped me in my tracks. The romance of the Great Northwest is even more unreal than in photos. ⛰️ First, the highlights—I'm not exaggerating Ta'er Monastery is the birthplace of Master Tsongkhapa. The "three wonders"—butter sculptures, murals, and silk embroidery—truly live up to their reputation. The Golden Roof Hall glitters in the sun; you must put your phone away when entering the hall to respect the rules. Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland lake. The deep blue at an altitude of 3,200 meters stretches to the horizon. In September–October, the grass by the lake starts to turn yellow, and the contrast between blue and yellow is even more sophisticated than in summer. Chaka Salt Lake is the "Mirror of the Sky." Clouds and snow-capped mountains are reflected beneath your feet. Wearing a red dress and standing in the center of the lake makes for an instant blockbuster photo. There are fewer people in autumn, and the mirror surface is much clearer. Coming in September–October is perfect. There are far fewer tourists, no sauna-like heat, and no lines, but the weather starts to become a gamble 🍂 📸 Photo spots—just copy these In front of the Golden Roof Hall at Ta'er Monastery: Shoot upwards to capture the golden roof against the blue sky for full Tibetan architectural vibes Erlangjian shore of Qinghai Lake: In September, the grass turns yellow. The blue lake paired with yellow grass creates a strong color contrast Center of Chaka Salt Lake: Go on a sunny day! Red or white dresses both look great, and the reflection is clear South Hall of the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum: Free admission. The massive thangka inside is stunning, and since it's indoors, it doesn't depend on the weather Along the way to Heiquan Reservoir: Stop and shoot whenever you like on the road from Xining to Qinghai Lake for autumn road trip vibes Outfit advice: Alternate between red and white dresses; both work well by the lake and salt lake. Don't wear earth tones, or you'll blend into the background 📷 🍜 After exploring the plateau, here's how to eat in Xining You must try the hand-grabbed lamb; the lamb in the Northwest has no gamey taste, and dipping it in pepper salt makes it tender enough to stick to your lips. The niangpi (cold noodles) are sour, spicy, and appetizing—you can find them everywhere. The yogurt is as thick as tofu; sprinkle some sugar on it, and you can eat two bowls in a row. A hot bowl of ga mianpian (noodle pieces) will drive away the plateau chill. Mojia Street and Shuijingxiang Night Market are one-stop shops for eating and strolling; the spots crowded with locals are always the right choice. After climbing at this altitude all day, sitting in a small restaurant gnawing on a lamb chop brings pure happiness 🥹 🚗 Transportation guide You can reach Xining by plane or high-speed train. A taxi from the city center to Ta'er Monastery takes about 40 minutes. Qinghai Lake is a 2.5-hour drive one way, and Chaka is 4 hours one way—it's quite far. Carpooling or chartering a car is the most worry-free option, and direct buses are also reliable; driving yourself is too tiring. I suggest spending the first day in the city to acclimate to the altitude, taking your time to visit Ta'er Monastery and the museum. Head to Qinghai Lake on the second day, leaving at 7:00 AM to avoid the crowds. Save Chaka for last—it depends on the weather, so only go on a sunny day. 👗 Outfits and gear The temperature difference between day and night in Xining in September–October is ridiculously large. It's only in the teens (Celsius) during the day when the sun is out, and it drops to single digits as soon as the sun sets. A thin down jacket or windbreaker is a must—don't just bring long sleeves because you think it's "autumn." The UV rays on the plateau are intense; the trio of sunglasses, sun hat, and sunscreen is essential, as the reflection by the lake and salt lake is even harsher. Have Rhodiola and glucose ready, and don't run, jump, or stay up late when you first arrive 😇 💡 A few tips Ta'er Monastery admission is CNY 70. Photography is prohibited inside the halls; please respect religious customs Chaka is CNY 60 plus CNY 100 for the small train. If you just want to take photos, you can skip the train and save some money Qinghai Lake Erlangjian is CNY 90. In September–October, the grass turns yellow, which actually looks great in photos, so don't worry that it's not the flower season Drink plenty of water and walk slowly when you first arrive on the plateau. Headaches and insomnia are normal; give your body a day to acclimate Chaka is gray and gloomy on cloudy days, and the "Mirror of the Sky" effect disappears completely. Keep a close eye on the weather forecast before you head out Temperatures drop rapidly after the National Day holiday. It might snow in mid-to-late October, so pack plenty of warm clothes Finally, a heartfelt word: When I said "I really don't recommend going," I meant I don't recommend going without doing any research. In the September–October season, if you slow down and wait for a sunny day to hit Chaka, Xining is worth a visit for everyone to catch a breath of plateau air. When the autumn sky is clear and crisp, go to the edge of Qinghai Lake and take a look at that lake water that is blue to the point of being unreal ✨

"Are you sure this isn't a filter?" My friend stared at the scene behind me on a video call, asking me to confirm three times. There was no filter. A 40-minute drive north of Xining, in the valleys toward Datong, the rapeseed flowers really do bloom in this overwhelming, blanket-like gold. Although the peak season in Menyuan is over by mid-August, Datong is at a slightly lower altitude, so the flowers can last for another 10 days or so. The day I arrived, the weather shifted from cloudy to sunny. A crack opened in the clouds, and beams of light hit the flower fields. The line between light and shadow split the entire valley in two, and I stood on the field path with weak knees. 📍How to get there— I didn't take the standard Qinghai Lake loop this time; I specifically chose a niche route around Xining. Take the Ningda Expressway north from the city, and you'll reach Datong in 40 minutes, then turn into the mountains along the country road. The road was repaved in 2026, and the two-way asphalt road is very smooth—perfectly fine for sedans. Along the way, you'll pass several Tibetan villages with highland barley drying on stone walls, and occasionally a tractor will chug past, giving it a very authentic, local feel. 🏔 I focused on three places this trip, in order: ❶ Laoye Mountain (Datong) The ticket isn't expensive, just over 30 yuan. But don't let the name fool you; the view from the top is incredibly expansive. There's a platform at the summit where you can overlook the entire Datong River Valley. In August, the highland barley in the valley is just filling out, glowing bright green, with the spurs of the Qilian Mountains in the distance, still capped with lingering snow. It takes about 40 minutes to climb, and the stairs are well-maintained, so you don't need to scramble. I recommend going up before 9:00 AM; it's most ethereal when the mist hasn't fully cleared. ❷ Dongxia Forest Park Drive another 15 minutes north from Laoye Mountain. There are very few tourists here; I only ran into two groups the whole time. The temperature in the canyon is 4–5 degrees lower than outside, the stream water is icy, and both banks are lined with dense spruce and shrubs. Walking along the wooden boardwalk to the end, there's a small alpine meadow. In August, it's dotted with scattered purple and yellow flowers, so quiet that only the sound of water and wind remains. It's perfect for clearing your mind and just zoning out. ❸ Beichuan River Source Wetland Closer to the city, a 20-minute drive. The wetland boardwalk was extended in 2026, and now it takes about an hour and a half to walk the whole thing. Reeds, water birds, and shallows—it's a very relaxing walk. It's best to go in the evening; the sunset dyes the water a bronze color, and it's perfect for backlit silhouettes. 🏡 The most unexpected discovery this time was where I stayed for the night. At the end of a mountain gully in Datong, there are a few courtyards built with local bluestone. The courtyard isn't big, but the moment I pushed open that thick wooden door, I was stunned—outside the courtyard wall were layers upon layers of rapeseed flower fields, stretching all the way to the foot of the opposite mountain, with golden waves of flowers rolling in the wind. Inside, there were old elm beams, the kang was warm, and a jar of freshly picked sea buckthorn berries sat on the windowsill. No TV, no anxiety about full signal bars, just the old apricot tree in the yard rustling in the wind. I pulled up a bamboo chair and sat under the eaves, watching the sky turn from deep blue to rose pink and then to deep purple, with stars popping out one by one. The housekeeper brought over a steaming bowl of Ga Mianpian (small dough flakes). The broth was made from beef bones, and the dough was thin and translucent—I drank every drop of the soup. I slept so soundly that night, without a single dream. 🧥 I'll only mention the most critical points for clothing and gear: → Short sleeves are fine in Xining during the day in summer, but when entering valleys or going over mountain passes, the temperature can drop to 12–13°C, so it's never a bad idea to stuff a fleece or light down jacket in your bag → Wear white or misty blue for photos in the flower fields; don't wear yellow, or you'll blend into the background → Wear non-slip hiking shoes; the field paths are muddy. Don't wear canvas shoes—don't ask me how I know → Mobile signal is weak in some sections toward Datong; download offline maps in advance 🚗 One more thing about transportation: In 2026, Xining Station handled over 50,000 passengers daily during the summer travel rush. High-speed trains from Lanzhou take just over two hours, and from Xi'an, it's just over four hours, with frequent schedules. The airport bus takes 37 minutes to go directly to the city center (Central Square), or you can go to Haidong West Station, 2 kilometers away, to transfer to a high-speed train, offering great flexibility. Honestly, the Northwest isn't just about the Grand Loop. These valleys and fields around Xining, where you don't need to rush or "check in" at tourist spots, are actually the most healing parts. You don't need to conquer any altitude or fight anyone for a photo spot. Just stand by the flower fields, let the wind blow, let the sun shine on you, and that string in your brain that's been taut for half a year will loosen on its own. There are still a few days left in August—enough for you to make a trip. Don't hesitate.

I used my annual leave for August and had originally booked a homestay in Huzhou to escape the hustle and bustle. Just before leaving, a friend convinced me to change the itinerary. After the trip, I felt so glad we changed plans. The breeze was cool, the scenery was fresh, and even the food was so delicious I wanted to pack it all up to take home. I've already made plans with my friend to go again at the end of August. 🥰 🍃 Guiyang Guiyang in August truly lives up to its "cool and refreshing" reputation Days above 30°C are rare The breeze is filled with the dampness of the mountain forests Itinerary highlights Qianlingshan Park's forest trails are completely shaded Macaques run around on the roadside Sitting by the lake for 30 mins when tired is more comfortable than staying in an air-conditioned room Tianhetan's karst caves are natural freezers Stalactites paired with underground rivers—walking through them clears away all the summer heat In the evening, walk the stone paths of Qingyan Ancient Town The sunset at Dingguang Gate falls on the city walls Buy some braised pig's trotters to gnaw on while strolling; it's very relaxing The cycling path at Huaxi Park is lined with camphor trees The air is fragrant while riding Itinerary planning Day 1 Spend most of the day at Qianlingshan Park Afternoon: Return to the city for sour soup beef Evening: Visit Jiaxiu Pavilion to see the lights reflected on the river Day 2 Visit Tianhetan to see the caves and waterfalls Stop by Huaxi Park on the way to cycle for 30 mins Day 3 Take a slow stroll through Qingyan Ancient Town until the afternoon Buy some crispy pork as souvenirs before heading back Food recommendations Siwawa wrapped with dipping sauce is refreshing Crispy pork noodles are so fragrant you'll want to drink the soup Before leaving, be sure to have a cup of mango ice slush; the chewy texture is amazing Travel tips Don't carry transparent plastic bags in Qianlingshan Park; the monkeys will snatch your food August has frequent showers, so carry a folding umbrella The caves are 7–8 degrees cooler than outside, so remember to bring a light cardigan 🌊 Weihai Weihai in August doesn't have the muggy humidity of the south The sea breeze blows in with a salty, fresh scent Making even sweating feel comfortable Itinerary highlights Go to Torch 8th Street in the morning The end of the sloping road connects to the crystal-blue sea; when there's no one around, it looks like a scene from an anime You must ride an electric scooter along the coastal road of Maotou Mountain The seawater at the No. 2 viewing platform is so clear you can see the reefs underwater The sand at the International Bathing Beach is as fine as powder While waiting for the sunset in the waves, there are street singers nearby Diamond Beach at Naxianghai lights up at night Walking while feeling the sea breeze is very pleasant Itinerary planning Day 1 Wake up early to visit Torch 8th Street Afternoon: Go to the International Bathing Beach to walk on the sand and wait for the sunset Day 2 Rent an electric scooter to ride around Maotou Mountain Stop by Banyue Bay and the giant photo frame at Weihai Park on the way Day 3 Spend half a day at Naxianghai Evening: Find a seafood restaurant in a residential area for a meal Food recommendations Mackerel dumplings are so fresh they burst with juice in one bite Sea worm rice is savory and delicious The freshly picked figs from roadside stalls are sweet as honey Remember to buy some fig jelly to try Travel tips The UV rays at the beach are twice as strong as in the city, so wear high-SPF sunscreen and sun-protective clothing Ask a few shops to compare prices when renting an electric scooter; May 21, 2026 The Qinghai Provincial Museum is a national first-class museum located on the east side of Xinning Square in the Chengxi District of Xining City. Construction began in 1957, it officially opened in 1986, and the new building opened in 2001. It is Qinghai's first modern large-scale comprehensive museum. Its most distinctive features are its Neolithic painted pottery and ethnic and religious artifacts, with a collection of over 15,000 pieces/sets, including over 2,000 precious artifacts. · *Dancing Figure Painted Pottery Basin:** From the Neolithic Majiayao culture, unearthed at the Zongri site. The inner wall is painted with figures dancing hand in hand, dating back over 5,000 years. · *Ming Yongle Period Gilt Bronze Guanyin Statue:** A Ming Dynasty court sculpture originating from Qutan Temple. Completely gilded, its exquisite craftsmanship makes it the largest gilt bronze statue in the museum. **Yellow River Stone King:** Unearthed from the Lajia site in the early Bronze Age, this stone slab shows signs of human processing and is the largest stone stone chime discovered to date. · *Seven-Star Pattern Bronze Mirror:** From the Qijia Culture, this is the earliest extant decorated bronze mirror in China, demonstrating the development of bronze-making technology. · *Painted Pottery Boots:** Unearthed from the Liuwan Cemetery in the Neolithic Age, these are the oldest and most mature boot-shaped pottery pieces discovered in China to date. · *Other Precious Collections:** · *Phoenix and Phoenix Bronze Incense Burner Lid:** Unearthed in Datong County, Xining, during the Han Dynasty, this piece served as the inspiration for the Hehuang Culture tourism logo design, featuring a vivid shape. · *Turquoise-Inlaid Phoenix Hairpin:** Unearthed from the Reshui Cemetery in Dulan during the Tubo period, this gold hairpin is inlaid with turquoise, showcasing cultural exchange between East and West. · *Tang Dynasty Handwritten "Karma Sutra":** An ancient book from the Tang Dynasty, an important example of the museum's involvement in ancient book preservation. The Xuanwu ink dropper and the painted pottery pot with string and net patterns are often included in the list of the top ten treasures along with the aforementioned artifacts. The "Seal of the Great National Preceptor of Guanghui Wufa Jingjue Miaoshan Yiguo Yanjiao Guanding Jieding Xitian Fozi" from the 22nd year of the Chenghua reign (1486) in the collection of the Qinghai Provincial Museum is the only surviving gilded bronze seal of the "Great National Preceptor" in the country that was clearly cast by the Ministry of Rites of the Ming Dynasty, bestowed upon a specific temple's Great National Preceptor, and is still in existence today. This seal is a unique piece; no other Ming Dynasty gilt bronze seal bearing the title "Grand Master" (國國師) with the same design, inscription, or provenance is found in public collections or authoritative records. Although the title "Grand Master" was conferred multiple times during the Ming and Qing dynasties (as seen in the Yuan, Ming, and Qing), the actual official seals were mostly made of silver or have been lost, and they typically did not use the full title "Great Master of the Western Paradise" (西天佛子國國師) and were uniformly cast by the Ministry of Rites. This seal in the Qinghai Provincial Museum possesses irreplaceable cultural and institutional historical value due to its precise date (Chenghua 22nd year), Ministry of Rites mark, serial number (午字822号), and clear recipients (Qutan Temple's 貫占藏卜 and Banjor 貫卜). The Qing Dynasty also had the title "Grand Master" and corresponding seals (such as those made of silver or bronze), but their design, inscription, and purpose differed from this Ming Dynasty seal, and therefore do not constitute "repetition of the same type." Therefore, this specific Ming Dynasty gilt bronze "Seal of the Great Master of the Western Paradise Buddha" is the only one of its kind in the entire country. 2026.5.21 The Qinghai Provincial Museum is a national first-class museum, located on the east side of Xinning Square in the Chengxi District of Xining City. After many days trapped in the stifling heat, my friends and I spontaneously decided to head straight to Xining to beat the summer heat🌬️. Daytime temperatures here stay around 20 degrees Celsius, and the breeze is refreshingly cool. No need to rush around—just pick laid-back spots to explore at a relaxed pace, making it comfortable and easygoing. 💰Travel budget We drove together, so expenses were fairly balanced. We stayed at city chain hotels, costing just over 100 per person per night. Meals mainly featured local snacks and beef and lamb dishes, with satisfying meals costing around 50 to 60 per person. Some nearby attractions are free, while a few require tickets. Adding fuel and small expenses, about 1,000 per person covers a 2–3 day short trip. Using public transportation can reduce costs even more. 🏔️Four hidden gems worth lingering at 1. Ta’er Monastery✨ Rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, the red walls and golden roofs look stunning under the sun. The courtyard is filled with ancient trees, and walking through the corridors feels noticeably cooler. Take time to appreciate the butter sculptures, murals, and embroidery. Dress appropriately, no photos inside the halls, and spin the prayer wheels clockwise. 2. Datong Yaozi Valley🌲 A natural forest oxygen bar with dense trees and a stream flowing along the forest path. Much less crowded than popular spots, it’s perfect for hiking and chatting with friends or having a simple picnic on the grass. The shade keeps temperatures low, so no need to rush—just enjoy the breeze and fresh air for a healing experience. 3. Huzhu Nanmenxia Reservoir💙 Open lake with distant mountain meadows offers a refreshing view. There’s a large, flat grassy area by the lake for walking or sitting and daydreaming. The soft evening light adds a cool filter to photos. If you prefer low-key activities, spending a slow half-day here is ideal. 4. Beichuan River Wetland Park🌿 Located in the city, no long travel needed. The wide water area and lush vegetation surround a gentle lakeside trail, easy for biking or walking. The evening breeze is pleasant, making it a great spot to cool off without heading far out of town. 🗺️Easy travel itinerary reference Arrive in Xining on day 1. After settling in, take an evening walk at Beichuan River Wetland Park to adjust to the altitude and temperature. On day 2, visit Ta’er Monastery in the morning, then drive to Datong Yaozi Valley in the afternoon to relax in the forest. On day 3, head early to Huzhu Nanmenxia Reservoir to enjoy the lakeside scenery, then return to the city in the afternoon for street food. No need to rush or wake up early—travel doesn’t have to fill every minute. 🍜Local food highlights You must try the lamb, boiled in clear water to preserve its original flavor, dipped in pepper and salt with almost no gamey taste. Kangguo lamb is braised with potatoes and wide noodles, very fragrant and perfect for sharing. Niangpi has a thick texture with a sour and spicy flavor that refreshes the appetite—great for cooling down after a long walk. Chilled sweet fermented barley drink has a light alcoholic aroma and a refreshing texture, perfect for summer. Also try handmade ga noodles, with fresh broth and a warming taste that leaves you feeling comfortable. 📌Some practical tips Xining has a big temperature difference between day and night. Even if the sun is strong at noon, it cools quickly in the evening, so bring a windbreaker. The high-altitude UV is strong—don’t skip hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Avoid intense exercise for the first day or two after arrival. Drink plenty of warm water and avoid heavy drinking right away. Keep quiet in religious sites, respect local customs, and don’t take photos of monks or worshippers without permission. Northwest restaurants usually serve large portions. When dining with friends, don’t order too much at once to avoid waste. Mountain roads have many curves—drive carefully. Don’t trample vegetation near lakes or grasslands. The city lacks the oppressive heat and crowding. Mountain breezes, lakes, ancient temples, and forests come together to blow away the summer’s built-up restlessness. Wandering freely with friends without rushing or checking off sights makes this summer escape truly relaxing.
