This time, I traveled solo in Germany and visited Cologne twice. The first time I visited, the weather was incredibly changeable – sunny one minute, windy and rainy the next, then raining and windy with brief periods of sunshine… My first trip to Cologne was so cold that I had to hide in a century-old restaurant and eat German pork knuckle 🤣🤣🤣. This time, my return trip to Cologne was mainly because, unlike my first visit, I didn't buy a ticket to enter the cathedral. This time, the focus was on exploring the interior. Currently, there are three types of tickets: €12 for the interior, €8 for the Cologne Cathedral crypt, and €8 for climbing the tower. Buying all tickets at once costs €24. It's important to note that there are no discounts for seniors. In the end, I chose to visit all three together. (If you're not particularly interested in artifacts, I suggest skipping the treasure hunt. Also, if you're not physically fit or afraid of heights, you can skip the tower and just enjoy the magnificent and breathtaking architecture inside the church. 😂) The stained glass windows inside the church are exquisite. I was lucky this time; while visiting the church, I happened to hear someone playing the organ. The sound system inside the church made the organ's sound even more perfect. This was one of the most delightful experiences of the trip! 🎉 I spent the entire afternoon and evening in Cologne. Climbing the tower was tiring, but the weather was so pleasant that day, and the view from the top was truly breathtaking. Before I knew it, night had fallen in Cologne. There was a reason I stayed so long. Last time I was in Cologne, I encountered the peak tourist season on a Friday afternoon on my return trip. Therefore, to avoid the crowds again, I deliberately chose to leave after 8 pm. I unexpectedly saw Cologne Cathedral at night! Because it wasn't completely dark yet, the illuminated cathedral against the deep blue sky made for absolutely stunning photos. The last surprise was that the Re5 train, which I had originally chosen as a 30-minute journey, kept stopping at unknown small stations for extended periods (probably to make way for other trains). This stretched the half-hour journey into almost an hour… (The main point is that it was supposed to depart on time! 🙄🙄🙄) I really hope I don't encounter anything like this before leaving Germany! 😂

I only had one day to explore Düsseldorf, so I didn't try to see everything. And honestly, that worked quite well. Düsseldorf isn't a very busy or hectic city, but it's beautiful and very pleasant to explore on foot, with parks, squares, beautiful streets, promenades and great shops. So this was my one-day itinerary: 🥐 Start the morning with a traditional German breakfast at Konditorei Heinemann A good way to start the day slowly, and don't leave without trying some of their confections. I also bought some to take with me. 🦆 Walk around Königsallee Königsallee is known for its elegant shops, but I enjoyed taking my time along the canal and watching the ducks swimming in the water. 🎄 Browse Nussknacker Haus A fun stop if you're visiting around Christmas, especially if you like traditional Christmas decorations. I stopped here to look for Christmas ornaments. 🥙 Have a Döner at Dene & Gör Düsseldorf has a great Turkish food scene, so I couldn't leave without trying a Döner. 🚶 Spend the afternoon walking through the parks and streets This was one of the things I enjoyed most about Düsseldorf. There was no need to constantly look for the next attraction. I could simply walk, explore the parks and squares, browse the shops and enjoy the city. 🌅 End the day by the Rhein The highlight of my day was slowing down by the river and watching the sunset. After a full day of walking around the city, it was the perfect way to finish. One thing to know before visiting: Düsseldorf isn't a city that feels overwhelmingly busy, which I actually liked. It makes this kind of one-day itinerary feel very relaxed. There are also plenty of international food options beyond German cuisine, including Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants. And one small caveat: smoking is quite common in Germany, including in many outdoor public spaces, so you may notice it while walking around or eating outside.
