From Medan to Banda Aceh: Discovering the Gateway to Mecca 🕌

I chose the road instead of the sky when I traveled from Medan to Banda Aceh. I took an overnight bus, and honestly, the journey turned out to be much more comfortable than I expected. 🚌🌙 Indonesia’s long distance buses are surprisingly good. The coaches are spacious, air conditioned, and comfortable, with different classes available depending on what kind of journey you want. Sitting back in a comfortable seat, watching the lights of small towns pass by through the window, there was something special about traveling through the night. By morning, I had arrived in Banda Aceh. My first impression was different from the busy atmosphere of many Indonesian cities. Banda Aceh felt calmer, quieter, and somehow more peaceful. It was the kind of place where I wanted to slow down and simply take everything in. Banda Aceh is the capital of Aceh Province and is historically known as the “Gateway to Mecca.” Its Islamic identity can still be felt throughout the city today. Aceh is also the only province in Indonesia where Sharia law is formally applied under its special autonomy, which gives the region a distinctive culture and way of life. 🕌 One place I could not miss was the magnificent Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. Its beautiful black domes, white architecture, and grand open courtyard immediately caught my attention. Standing there, I felt a sense of calm that is difficult to put into words. But Banda Aceh is not only about beautiful architecture and religious heritage. The city also carries one of the most painful chapters in modern history. I had read about the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami before, but visiting the Aceh Tsunami Museum made the tragedy feel much more real. Then I saw PLTD Apung 1, the enormous power ship that was swept inland by the tsunami. Seeing a ship that should have been at sea sitting on land was deeply moving. For a moment, I found myself thinking less about the force of the disaster and more about the people who survived it and somehow found the strength to rebuild their lives. ❤️ After the heavier moments, I enjoyed experiencing a simpler side of Banda Aceh. The city has a wonderful coffee culture, and one of my favorite moments was sitting at a local café with a cup of traditional Sanger coffee and a bowl of spicy Mie Aceh. ☕🍜 There was nothing complicated about the moment. Just good coffee, delicious food, people chatting around me, and the rhythm of everyday life. That was when Banda Aceh started to feel less like a place I was visiting and more like a place I was getting to know. Getting to Banda Aceh is also quite convenient. You can travel by air from places such as Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan. I chose the overnight bus from Medan for my journey there, but on the way back, I flew from Banda Aceh to Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia. ✈️ Looking back, Banda Aceh was much more than a stop on my journey. It is a city of faith, memory, resilience, and warm hospitality. A place where a grand mosque can bring a sense of peace, where a tsunami memorial can make you pause and reflect, and where a simple cup of coffee can bring you right into the rhythm of local life. My overnight journey from Medan brought me to Banda Aceh, but what stayed with me was something much deeper. Sometimes, the best part of traveling is not the number of places you visit. It is the feeling a place leaves behind when you finally leave. For me, Banda Aceh is one of those places. 🕌☕ · -- A Little Respect Goes a Long Way 🌿 Banda Aceh is a conservative Muslim city, so visitors should be mindful of local customs. Dressing modestly, especially when visiting mosques and religious places, is important. Public displays of affection and revealing clothing are best avoided, and visitors should always respect prayer times and local traditions. It is also worth remembering that Aceh has its own Sharia-based regulations, so checking the current local rules before your trip is a good idea.
