Oberstdorf is located in the Allgäu region near the German-Austrian border, nestled at the foot of the Alps. It’s a 2-hour train ride via RE from Munich Central Station. In winter, it’s a popular skiing destination. In summer, it’s less crowded and favored by hiking and paragliding enthusiasts. Most hotels in the town include the Allgäu Pass in their room rates, which allows free use of local buses and unlimited cable car rides! Staying one night lets you enjoy two days of benefits, making it very cost-effective. ⚠️ Before heading up the mountain, it’s best to check the live webcam on the official website to see if there’s fog. If it’s foggy, going up the mountain might not be worthwhile. Recommended 2-day itinerary: ⛰️ Söllereck Take Bus No. 1 from the bus stop next to Oberstdorf train station to Söllereckbahn. Ride the cable car to the summit, then hike down—it's very easy. Alternatively, you can hike through Schrattenwang, cross the German-Austrian border, descend to Riezlern in Austria, and take a bus back. ⛰️ Nebelhorn Take the Nebelhornbahn cable car to the second station, then transfer to another cable car to reach the summit at an altitude of 2,224 meters. The summit offers multiple viewing platforms with breathtaking panoramic views. Return to the previous station and follow the signs for the Zeigersattel hiking trail (Route 4), where you can enjoy a high-altitude view of Seealpsee. The round trip from the cable car station takes about an hour. Descend to the first station via cable car, where you can easily walk to the artificial lake. The lakeside is home to many cows, and the sound of their bells jingling is delightful. Finally, take the cable car or hike back down the mountain.
