Du'an travel guide and discussion

This is Du'an in Guangxi, a nearly untouched, rarely visited hidden paradise that boasts a rare group of underground river skylights and a flowering river, both stunning and healing. The Chengjiang River is crystal clear, blooming with pure white sea mustard flowers from May to October, gently swaying with the current like a river of starlight. Over 300 skylights resemble the earth’s blue eyes, with water colors transitioning from light blue to dark green. Sunlight penetrates the surface, revealing the underwater forest clearly—photos come out stunning straight from the camera. No commercialization, no crowds—just mountain breezes and pure nature. Standing on the shore, listening to the babbling water and watching the mountains reflected, all restlessness instantly fades away. 📍Detailed address: Du'an Yao Autonomous County, Hechi, Guangxi 🎫Admission: Free 🚗Transportation: Self-driving is most convenient, about 2 hours from Nanning ✅Travel tips: Morning light is best; you can stroll along the riverbank, play in the shallow water, and snorkel in some skylights—safety first. True beauty is never on the influencer’s list but lies in this undisturbed awe.

#bucketlistdestinations Fengtang Village View Platform in Du’an, Guangxi, is my newly discovered hidden gem that fully deserves a spot on every nature lover’s bucket list. Far from crowded mainstream scenic spots, this lesser-known mountain terrace offers surreal rolling sea of clouds, dreamy sunrise glow, and quiet rural wilderness beauty. My early morning visit here gifted me one of the most magical natural moments I have ever experienced. I want to share my unforgettable travel story here. I arrived right before dawn, arriving at the viewing platform in cold morning breeze. At first, thick gray fog covered everything, with no visible scenery at all. Many tourists around me felt disappointed and planned to leave, thinking they had missed the famous cloud sea view. I decided to stay patiently and wait a little longer. Just twenty minutes later, miracles happened. As the sun slowly rose above the karst mountain ridges, golden sunlight pierced through the dense fog. The thick mist gradually spread and turned into vast rolling cloud waves covering the entire valley. Layered mountains emerged sporadically above the white clouds, like floating fairy islands. The pure white cloud sea was dyed warm golden by sunrise, forming a stunning gilded cloud ocean. I even caught a faint rainbow shimmering above the cloud layers, a rare random natural surprise. What makes Fengtang Village a top bucket-list destination is its stable and breathtaking cloud sea landscape. It boasts over 20 cloud-view days monthly, especially stunning on sunny days after rain. It features two viewing platforms with different perspectives: one for panoramic wide cloud sea views, and the other for closer layered mountain and cloud scenery. Best of all, it remains low-commercialized, free from noisy stalls and massive crowds, retaining pure and primitive natural charm. Unlike crowded famous cloud mountains, this quiet terrace lets you witness the slow flow and transformation of clouds, feeling immersive peace and grandeur of nature. It is a perfect spot to chase sunrise, admire cloud oceans, and escape urban hustle. Let’s chat! Would you patiently wait for nature’s miracle on a foggy morning? Do you prefer popular crowded scenic spots or quiet hidden wilderness paradises? What dreamy natural view is still on your bucket list? Drop your travel stories and tips below!

Have you heard of the "Jiudun Skylight"? It is a sacred site for underwater cave diving in China, known as the gateway to the "Mount Everest of China’s underwater world." Don’t be intimidated by "diving"—for families with children, the Jiudun Skylight in winter reveals a completely different breathtaking scene: sapphire-clear spring water gushes from underground, and in the cold winter air, wisps of white mist rise from the water surface, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere. No deep diving is needed here; you can be deeply moved by this pure blue right from the shore. 🔵 Jiudun Skylight Family Tour Guide Shore Viewing and Photography: The spring water is crystal clear, showing different layers from Tiffany blue to emerald green. The gentle winter sunlight sparkles on the water surface, creating a stunning view. This is a paradise for photography lovers—dress your child in bright colors for great photos. Water Experience (Safety First): You can let children dip their feet in the shallow, calm water downstream of the spring to feel the cool spring water (water temperature is low in winter, so avoid prolonged soaking). Stay far away from the main spring and deep water areas, as underwater conditions are complex with strong currents. Ecological Observation: The spring nourishes dense aquatic plants around, forming a unique underwater forest landscape. You can observe small fish swimming and swaying water plants with your children. Nearby Walks: Jiudun Skylight is located in Du’an Yao Autonomous County, surrounded by typical karst terrain and pastoral scenery. You can drive around nearby to enjoy the mountains and fields. ⚠️ Safety Tips and Winter Advice Core Rule: Strictly no scuba diving or free diving without certification and professional guides! Multiple diving accidents have occurred here. Child Supervision: Always hold your child’s hand and never let them approach the water unattended. Winter Clothing: The humidity by the water makes it feel colder; dress warmer than usual and wear scarves and hats. Environmental Awareness: Do not throw any trash into the water to protect this precious water source. 🚗 Transportation and Trip Planning Location: Jiudun Village, Du’an Yao Autonomous County, Hechi City, Guangxi. How to Get There: It is recommended to drive from Nanning, about 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Navigate to "Jiudun Skylight" to reach the destination. Visiting Time: As a core attraction, 1-2 hours is enough for sightseeing and photography. You can combine this with nearby attractions like Du’an Underground River National Geopark and Chengjiang National Wetland Park for a 1-2 day karst landscape tour in Du’an. 🏨 Stay Among Mountains and Waters | Accommodation Recommendations in Du’an and Nanning Accommodation options in Du’an County are limited; for more comfort, consider staying in Nanning: Du’an Miluoto Resort Hotel: One of the best hotels in Du’an County, decorated with ethnic characteristics, a good local base. Nanning Longguang Nalien Luxury Collection Hotel: A landmark hotel in Nanning, high-rise with unbeatable views and luxurious facilities. Nanning Qingxiu Mountain Marriott Hotel: Adjacent to Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area, quiet environment, strong resort feel. Nanning Shangri-La Hotel: Established five-star hotel with stable service, located in the bustling city center. Nanning Wanda Realm Resort Hotel: Located in Wuxiang New District, close to Guangxi Art Museum and other cultural facilities, modern design. The beauty of Jiudun Skylight is striking. That deep blue pool is unforgettable at a glance. Bringing children here is not just about sightseeing but also about helping them understand what "natural purity" and "geological wonder" mean. This vivid geography lesson quietly unfolds by this clear blue water.

Otherwise, you'll likely just see something that looks like a fishpond in your own backyard. Why do I say that: ① The skylights might be dry. For example, Jiuling Skylight and Tunbang Skylight are both fed by groundwater and are heavily affected by the seasons. They have no water during the dry season in winter, and in summer, if it hasn't rained for a long time, the water level drops very low. They aren't suitable for visiting and don't look good either. So, before you set off, be sure to search for recent local conditions so you don't end up posting warnings online later. ② You arrive at the navigation destination but can't find the actual scenic spot. Take Jiudun Skylight, for example. Many people navigate directly to the source, but did you know the source is closed? The actual place to visit is 200m downstream. You can paddleboard to see the flowers, soak in the water, or swim there. There are many vendors renting paddleboards on the bank. If you just walked a little further downstream, or if you saw someone waving at you from a roadside parking lot and thought about why they wanted you to park there—well, of course, it's because there's something fun, beautiful, or delicious there. Then, around Jiudun, if you continue further downstream, there are far fewer tourists. For example, Liugao Pier, the Weizou rice paddy seaweed flowers, and even behind the riverside restaurants and homestays, there are several places to play in the water and see flowers. Finally, I think when you go out to travel, you should have a basic understanding of your destination and basic information retrieval skills. Just like how you're reading my note, it should have helped you a little, right? Lastly, I wish everyone a happy holiday and smooth travels.

Who says you can only spend 3 days in Guangxi?! We ate our way from Guilin to Liuzhou, checking off landscapes, hidden gems, and local vibes. Save this and go! Day 1–2: Guilin → Yangshuo Arrive in Guilin on the afternoon of Sept 30. Head straight to Elephant Trunk Hill, then watch the Sun and Moon Pagodas light up in the evening. The golden glow paired with the river breeze creates an incredible atmosphere. You must hit the night market in the evening! For suanye (pickled fruit), choose green mango + plum, mixed with chili salt—it's super appetizing. Then, find a time-honored Guilin rice noodle shop. On the second morning, head to Chuanshan Park. It's quiet and uncrowded, and you can climb the tower for a panoramic view of Guilin. Stop by the cave cafe on the way; sipping a latte next to stalactites feels like stepping into a fairy tale. In the afternoon, head straight to Yangshuo. Rent an e-bike to ride through the Ten-Mile Gallery—the breeze along the Yulong River is sweet! Check out the afternoon tea at the hotel featured in "Happy Adults." The rooftop terrace frames the entire landscape; your social media will be flooded with people asking for the location! In the evening, take a bamboo raft to watch the sunset turn the water golden. At night, catch the Golden Dragon Parade—the illuminated dragon is stunning. Finish with another bowl of rice noodles; it's so satisfying it's pure bliss. Day 3–5: From thrills to tourist traps, all real experiences Day 3 morning: Go for the Earth Core Exploration! The shuttle bus ride into the mountains is thrilling—remember to bring a mask to protect against dust. Cave exploration is low-risk. In the afternoon, head to Baise. Don't miss the barbecue stalls in the evening! Day 4 morning: Go to Haokun Lake. Staff in vests will guide you. Cars aren't allowed in; it costs CNY 60 for a round-trip motorcycle ride, and it takes 10 minutes to reach the lake. The water is as blue as a gemstone. Due to flood season risks, head straight to Du'an for paddleboarding in the afternoon! Navigate to the Ottelia alismoides (sea cabbage flower) viewing base, but don't stop there! Keep driving for 8 minutes and find any shop that rents paddleboards. Watching the sea cabbage flowers in the clear water is so healing you won't want to leave. Day 5 morning: The Jellyfish Skylight. The water is emerald green. ⚠️ The road to Nongxiang Sinkhole is extremely difficult to drive; it's only worth it if you can see the Tyndall effect. Bama Longevity Village has nothing to offer. The same Bama water sold for CNY 1 at other scenic spots costs CNY 3 a bottle here—a bit of a rip-off. Day 6–8: Liuzhou carb overload, eating until you have to hold the wall to walk Day 6: Head to Liuzhou! First stop: Jiao Jie Luosifen (Snail Rice Noodles). Fried egg + pig's trotter + sour bamboo shoots—one bite of that savory, spicy flavor is the true taste of Liuzhou. After eating, you must get a tea seed oil hair wash. Any shop will do; you'll feel so light after the massage. In the morning, go to Bainiao Rock. It's a pity there's no green water during the flood season, but Guimo Cave is top-tier! The water is still blue-green, and there's an oxygen-rich area. Every deep breath is fresh air. Day 7: Sleep in. In the afternoon, go to Luzhai Xiangqiao Karst Park. Order takeout in the evening: raw fish (yusheng) + rice noodle rolls + classic chocolate cake. Eat the cake as soon as it arrives—it's dense and not too sweet, but it doesn't taste good if left too long. Day 8: Stroll through the morning market to buy local specialties. You must try the freshly squeezed corn juice! It's sweet, rich, and warms your heart with every sip. Head home in the afternoon with wonderful memories. Guangxi, I'll be back! Tips & Must-Dos ❌ Avoid: Nongxiang Sinkhole (check weather), Bama Longevity Village (high prices), Bainiao Rock (avoid during flood season) ✅ Must-do: Yangshuo e-bike ride, Du'an paddleboarding, Liuzhou tea seed oil hair wash, classic chocolate cake We avoided the crowds during the National Day holiday, didn't have to queue for bamboo rafts, and even avoided the rain

Originally planned to head to Western Sichuan, but the weather was unstable, so we switched to a water-focused route in Guangxi. The 5-day, 4-night trip cost 2,500 per person, including round-trip high-speed rail, accommodation, car rental, admission tickets, and water activities. No rushing throughout the trip. 🌙 Nanning | Night market No rushing on the first day, just focusing on eating. Not doing a high-intensity trip, just headed straight to the night market after getting off the high-speed rail. Didn't take many photos of attractions; all my attention was on the local food, starting the trip at a slow pace. 💧 Du'an | Tunbang Skylight Second day, checked out the skylight for water activities. The water is clear and photogenic, but it felt a bit underwhelming after building up high expectations. It's worth a look if you're passing by, but not a place I'd make a special trip for. 🕳️ Nandan | Dongtian Shengjing The cave is massive, and you'll be awestruck by the space once you step inside. However, experiencing this type of landscape once is enough. 🛶 Tian'e | Paddleboarding The highlight of this trip! We lucked out with good weather; mountains stretched along both banks, and the river was wide. When tired of paddling, I just sat quietly on the paddleboard, drifting with the current, watching the mountain reflections and fish, letting go of all the "to-do" list pressure. It was cloudy the previous days, but here it was clear blue skies and white clouds. If I could only keep one spot from the whole route, I'd choose Tian'e. 🚤 Sanmenhai The moment the boat entered the dark cave was very healing; the green water flowed slowly into the cave, and everything around became instantly quiet. The emerald green water at the Shegeng Cave is ethereal. It's worth a visit if you're passing by, but no need to make a special trip. Out of the 5 days of the trip, 3 were spent playing in the water, with an average daily cost of about 500. No need to wake up early to rush to attractions throughout the trip—it was relaxed and comfortable, and that's enough.

Want to get away for Mid-Autumn and National Day but worried about your wallet taking a hit? I went through my bills and picked 8 places that really won't cost much. No detours, just practical tips. 1️⃣ Hechi | Guangxi First up, Hechi — a typical place where the scenery outshines its fame. The Donglan landscape spreads along the Hongshui River; taking a boat to watch both banks is calmer than you might expect, and a boat ticket for a few dozen CNY can fill an afternoon. ⏰ Arrive at the pier before 8:00 AM for the best mountain silhouettes while the mist hasn't cleared. Jiudun Tiankuang is a classic dive spot; even if you don't dive, you can watch the water from shore — that blue-green is real, not a filter. 📍 It's about a 40-minute taxi from the county seat; carpooling saves money. Xiangbei Shiwai Taoyuan and Sanli Yangdu work well in the same day. The former lets you walk along rice ridges and see caves, the latter offers a bamboo raft float — water levels are stable in autumn and it's not too sunny. ⚠️ Don't buy so-called "combo tickets" at the entrance; buying single tickets is usually cheaper. For lodging, pick Jinchengjiang old town — a night is just over CNY 100. At night, have a bowl of boiled rice noodles with pickled bamboo shoots for about CNY 10. Good for budget travelers who don't mind some travel hassle. 2️⃣ Baoji | Shaanxi Baoji is one of my underrated stops. Mount Taibai in autumn is layered with color; you can wear short sleeves at the base but need a jacket up top. 🚄 It's about 1 hour by high-speed train from Xi'an. Ticket prices are stable; don't believe rumors of "pre-holiday price hikes." The Famen Temple Buddhist cultural area is best in the morning — fewer people and an easy walk along the central axis. ⚠️ Don't be pressured into paying for "consecration" services at the gate — just tour on your own. Guanshan grassland and Dongshanfeng head in different directions; if you're short on time, pick one. The grassland is for lying back and cloud-watching, Dongshanfeng is for hiking and wind on your face. 📍 The grassland is best reached by car or private hire; bus service is limited. For food, try noodles with rolled dough and meat sauce — under CNY 20 a meal. Stay near Jing'er Road for convenience. Suitable for seniors and solo travelers wanting to relax. 3️⃣ Yangzhou | Jiangsu I recommend avoiding the crowds at Slender West Lake at midday during holidays. ⏰ Enter the park before 7:00 AM for soft light and calm water; you can take photos without dodging people. The lake breeze in autumn brings just the right coolness. Ge Garden and He Garden are close; pick one to explore in depth. Ge Garden's bamboo and seasonal rockeries are more appealing, while He Garden's covered corridors are great for depth shots. 📍 It's within walking distance from Dongguan Street. Stop for a bowl of dry mixed noodles on the way. 🍜 For morning tea, skip the hyped places — a long-standing street shop serving sandwiched buns and green willow spring tea will do well for about CNY 20. ⚠️ Some gardens require reservations during National Day. Check official notices before you go. Stay near Wenchang Pavilion; buses reach most spots. Great for couples and for walking slowly with parents. Low cost and you control the pace. 4️⃣ Shaoyang | Hunan Shaoyang is mainly about Langshan. The Danxia at Bajiaozhai is most vivid in autumn; the climb takes about 2 hours, and those with average fitness can take the cable car. ⏰ Head up after 4:00 PM — the sunset moment alone is worth the ticket. 📍 Tianyi Alley is so narrow you have to turn sideways to pass; larger friends should be prepared. Chili Peak looks more interesting from a distance than climbing it up close, so don't force it. For food, duck blood soup and pork blood meatballs are salty in the local style — they go well with rice. Stay in Xinning county town; a night costs about CNY 100, roughly half of what the scenic area charges. ⚠️ Bottled water is often twice the price inside attractions, so bring enough with you. Good for hiking lovers and anyone wanting to avoid overly popular peaks. For Mid-Autumn and National Day, leave early — parking is tight. 5️⃣ Putian | Fujian I recommend one highlight in Putian: Meizhou Island Mazu Cultural Tourism Area. Take the ferry to the island and let the sea breeze relax you. 🚄 From Putian station, take a bus to the pier and then buy the ferry ticket; overall cost is not high. ⏰ The Gewei Shenshi Garden at dusk is best for sea views — the rocks shine from the waves. 📍 There is an electric cart loop on the island; don't walk the whole route or you'll get tired. 🍜 Check prices before ordering seafood on the island and confirm the unit before weighing. A bowl of Mazu noodles is about CNY 10–20 and very filling. ⚠️ Book ferry tickets in advance on holidays; lines at the pier can be mind-boggling. Island homestays are cheap on weekdays but jump in price on holidays. Good for bringing elders for blessings or for solo sea-gazing. Affordable and authentic. 6️⃣ Turpan | Xinjiang Turpan is at its best in September–October: the grapes are ripe and the sun is less harsh. Flaming Mountain looks fiery from afar but is less extreme up close. ⏰ Go in the morning; the ground surface temperature is still high in the afternoon. Kumutage Desert is near the city; camel rides and sandboarding cost extra. To save money, walk a stretch of the dune barefoot. 📍 Go in the evening when shadows lengthen — great for photos. ⚠️ Don't go at noon; soles of shoes can get scorched. The Grape Valley area in Turpan city is good for a slow stroll. The karez irrigation system museum has a low ticket price and shows how locals survived here. 🍜 Pilaf and baked buns are sold individually for around CNY 10 each. Stay near the old town; hostel beds are just a few dozen CNY. Good for those who don't mind the sun and want an exotic feel. Bring a jacket — temperatures drop a lot between day and night during Mid-Autumn and National Day. 7️⃣ Hengshui | Hebei Hengshui Lake was a surprise. In autumn, the reeds turn yellow and the whole lake looks like it's been color-graded. ⏰ Go at dawn for more birds and fewer people. Rent a bike to circle the lake — a day costs a few dozen CNY. 📍 It's about a 30-minute taxi ride from Hengshui station to the lakeside. The lake area has no entrance fee; boat rides cost extra, and walking the boardwalk is scenic enough. ⚠️ Don't trust roadside touts offering "speedboat tours" — prices are opaque. 🍜 In town, try the shoe-sole sesame pancake with old-style tofu — a meal for a few CNY. Stay near the train station; budget hotels are under CNY 100. Good for families and anyone wanting a quiet couple of days. This place doesn't rely on fame — it rewards those willing to slow down. If you want to avoid crowds during Mid-Autumn and National Day, consider it. 8️⃣ Yingtan | Jiangxi Last stop, Yingtan, where the star attraction is Longhu Mountain. Danxia landforms plus the Luxi River — take a bamboo raft and float a stretch as the mountains recede on both sides; it's very relaxing. ⏰ Float in the morning when the light is favorable and you're not shooting into the sun. 📍 Stop by Shangqing ancient town on the way — the old street is short and can be walked in half an hour. ⚠️ Ask about "blessing" type services before you pay. Tickets and bamboo raft fees are sold separately; buy what you need. 🍜 Tianshi roasted chicken with chestnuts and Luxi river fish are local specialties; look for a small town restaurant — about CNY 40–50 per person. Stay in Yingtan city; buses reach the scenic area entrance. Good for people who like scenic water-and-mountains without heavy climbing. For Mid-Autumn and National Day, book bamboo raft time slots in advance to avoid waiting. Of these 8 places, I personally most want to go back to Hechi and Turpan. One is peaceful, the other is intense. Pick one and you're all set.

Instead of fighting crowds on holidays, head to these small towns. I've picked 8 places that are easy to get to and budget-friendly. 01 Ganzi | Sichuan I'm a fan of Newduqiao in autumn. ⏰ Mid-to-late Oct, the poplars turn yellow, and any photo taken by the 318 National Highway looks like a screensaver. But don't just stand on the roadside; it's dusty and busy. Walk 200m into the village for clean lighting and composition. Mugecuo is best in the morning when the lake is like a mirror. 🚄 It's about a 30-min taxi ride from Kangding city. Admission and sightseeing bus aren't cheap, but they save energy. ⚠️ Altitude is around 3,700m, so don't run or jump; walk slowly. I recommend 2 days for Daocheng Yading. Spend 1 day on the short route from Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake, and 1 day on the long route to Luorong Pasture. ⚠️ Spots for horse riding on the long route are limited; arrive at the ticket office before 8 AM. Hailuogou is best in winter, with glaciers and hot springs. Stay in Moxi Ancient Town at night and have a bowl of yak beef hot pot to feel refreshed. 02 Yushu | Qinghai You shouldn't drive into Hoh Xil yourself. 📍 The real sights are along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, from Kunlun Pass to Wudaoliang. ⏰ Tibetan antelopes are most likely to appear at dawn and dusk. Don't chase them; just watch from afar. Access to Sanjiangyuan National Park is currently limited, so check official notices before you go. ⚠️ Don't trust roadside touts offering to "take you deep into the source"; they're mostly scams. Yushu city itself is worth a 1-day stop. There's chanting at Jiegu Monastery in the morning, and a walk around the Xinzhai Mani Stone Mound takes 30 mins. 🍜 Find a Tibetan restaurant for lunch and try tsampa with butter tea. You might not be used to it at first, but it really warms you up. This is suitable for experienced drivers, not for traveling with elderly family members. 03 Jingmen | Hubei Xianling Mausoleum was an unexpected highlight of my trip. 📍 It's about a 40-min drive from Jingmen city, and there are so few tourists you can hear the wind. ⏰ The light is slanted after 3 PM, making the red walls and stone statues perfect for photos. But don't just visit the mausoleum area. Mochou Village is right next door; it looks like a small ancient town when the lights come on in the evening, perfect for a stroll and dinner. 🍜 Panlong vegetable is a local specialty; it's steamed and has a texture like meat cake. ⚠️ Xianling Mausoleum is closed on Mondays for maintenance, so confirm before you leave. This place is great for parents because the roads are flat and easy to walk. Kids might find it boring, so bring some snacks. 04 Zibo | Shandong Zhoucun Ancient Mall is more interesting than I thought. 📍 Enter from the main archway and walk through Yinzishi Street and Sishi Street. ⏰ Arrive before 10 AM when shops are just opening for perfect empty shots. ⚠️ Don't buy sesame cakes at the first shop at the entrance; go deeper for the same price and a crispier taste. Zibo BBQ is still worth eating, but avoid the viral internet-famous spots. 🍜 Find a place in a local neighborhood for pancakes with scallions and dipping sauce; you can eat your fill for about 50 yuan per person. 🚄 A taxi from Zibo station to Zhoucun is about 30 yuan; buses are available but slow. This is suitable for a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip for couples or friends. It's too hot in summer, so spring and autumn are best. 05 Hechi | Guangxi The Donglan landscape has an unspoiled, wild charm. 📍 You can stop anywhere along the Hongshui River for a view. ⏰ Go after the rain when the mountains are foggy, like an ink painting. Jiudun Tianchuang is great for water activities, but ⚠️ there are many undercurrents, so don't try to swim in deep areas. You need a boat to enter Xiangbei Shangri-La; the cave entrance is narrow, but it opens up inside. Sanli Yangdu offers bamboo rafting; the light is soft after 4 PM, which is great for photos. 🍜 Hechi's rice noodles are ridiculously cheap at 6 yuan a bowl. This is suitable for people who love nature and don't like rushing between attractions. Driving is recommended as public transport is infrequent. 06 Turpan | Xinjiang The Flaming Mountains are truly hot. ⏰ Go before 8 AM or after 7 PM; the surface temperature at noon can fry an egg. 📍 Just walk the corridor in the scenic area; don't ride camels, as it's expensive and you'll be exposed to the sun. Kumtag Desert is close to the city and accessible by taxi. ⚠️ Don't wear sandals as the sand will burn your feet. Bring a bottle of water; climbing the dunes is more tiring than you'd think. The sunset is worth the price of admission, with colors shifting from gold to purple. Eat grapes and pilaf in Turpan city. 🍜 Farmhouses near Grape Valley are okay for a rest, but prices are geared toward tourists. It's best to visit in spring or autumn; summer is a hardcore experience. 🚄 It's a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Urumqi, which is convenient. 07 Qinhuangdao | Hebei Beidaihe isn't just for summer. ⏰ Early May or late Sept is best, with fewer people and a cool, not biting, sea breeze. 📍 Watch the sunrise at Pigeon Nest Park and check the tide table in advance to go clam digging when the tide goes out. Walk around Shanhaiguan Ancient City and take a look at the "First Pass under Heaven" tower. ⚠️ Don't spend too much time inside as the commercial street is very generic. 🍜 Sitiaobaozi is a local classic with thin skin and big fillings; have it with a bowl of millet porridge. It's suitable for weekend road trips from Beijing or Tianjin, and kids can dig in the sand. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Beidaihe station; a taxi to the beach is about 20 yuan. 08 Shannan | Tibet I advise you not to just stop at the viewing platform at Yamdrok Lake. 📍 Drive along the lakeside road towards Langkazi and find a slope to go down; the lake water is an unreal blue. ⏰ The sunlight is direct from 10 AM to 2 PM, giving the most saturated colors. ⚠️ The altitude is over 4,400m, so don't jump around, and wear a hat because it's windy. The viewing platform charges admission, but some spots by the lake are free, so choose what you prefer. 🚄 You can charter a car from Lhasa for a day trip, or a shared car costs about 200 yuan per person. This is suitable for those who have already acclimated to the plateau. If it's your first time in Tibet, I suggest staying in Lhasa for 2 days first. These 8 places vary: Ganzi and Shannan are the most physically demanding, while Jingmen and Zibo are the most relaxing. Pick one and get going.

Some cities are naturally popular, while others have so much to offer but are always treated as mere transit stops. I recommend you don't just pass through these 6 places and miss out. 01 Hechi | Guangxi The first time I went to Hechi, I stood in the valleys of Donglan, stunned for a long time. The water was an unreal emerald color, with bamboo on both banks leaning over the surface, rustling whenever the wind blew. ⏰ It's best to arrive before 10:00 AM, while the mist hasn't fully cleared, making for photos that look like ink wash paintings. Jiudun Tianchuang is a different story. The underground river gushes out from the foot of the mountain, so clear you can see which way the water plants are swaying. If you go in summer, dipping your feet in will give you a chilly jolt. 📍 Villagers sell roasted corn by the tianchuang for 5 yuan a cob, which is a better deal than inside the scenic area. Xiangbei Shangri-La is great for taking your parents. You take a small boat into a cave, and when you come out, the view opens up to reveal rice paddies, water buffalo, and old houses. ⚠️ Don't go during the rainy season, as the boats stop running when the water level rises. I suggest saving Sanli Yangdu for the evening; ⏰ after 5:30 PM, the light hits at an angle, making that stone path at the ferry crossing look great in photos. As for transportation, Hechi's attractions are scattered, so it's best to drive yourself. 🚄 Rent a car after getting off at Hechi West Station; it's much less stressful than waiting for shuttle buses the whole way. 02 Zaozhuang | Shandong I've heard too many bad reviews about Taierzhuang Ancient Town, but after going there myself, my conclusion is: staying inside versus staying outside are two completely different experiences. ⏰ Enter the town at 4:00 PM, but don't rush to explore. Find a riverside inn to drop off your bags, and wait for the tour groups to leave before heading out. That's when the stone paths get quiet, lanterns light up one by one, and boatwomen row past under the bridges. 🍜 Don't eat dinner on the main street. Duck into the small alleys and look for places with a few low tables out front; the spicy chicken and vegetable pancakes are both 30% cheaper than on the main street. 📍 The place on Dingzi Street that has been making sa soup for over a decade only sells until 10:00 AM, so if you get up late, you'll miss it. ⚠️ Hotel prices triple during holidays, so travel off-peak if you can. A room that usually costs over 200 yuan can go up to 800 yuan during May Day. The ancient town itself isn't big; one day and one night is enough, so don't buy a two-day ticket. 03 Baoting | Hainan Right next to Sanya, it's unbelievably quiet. For Binglanggu and Yanoda, I suggest choosing one or the other—don't be greedy. Binglanggu is for seeing Li and Miao villages, weaving, boat-shaped houses, and grandmas sitting at their doorways weaving rattan. ⏰ Go in the morning when it's less crowded and the grandmas still have the energy to chat with you. Yanoda is a rainforest with waterfalls, boardwalks, and ziplines. Choose Yanoda if you're bringing kids, as there are more activities; choose Binglanggu if you're with elderly people, as it's flat and less tiring to walk. ⚠️ Don't go to either place at noon, or the sun will make you question your life choices. There are many mosquitoes in the rainforest, so wear long pants and spray on repellent—this is a lesson learned the hard way. 🚄 It's a 1.5-hour drive from Sanya; if you don't have a car, booking a one-day tour group is the easiest way. 🍜 Eat five-toed pig and bamboo rice outside the scenic area for lunch; it's half the price of what's inside. 04 Hohhot | Inner Mongolia I first went to Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon in October. The Yellow River water is clear here, with loess cliffs on both sides of the canyon, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⏰ Arrive at 3:00 PM when the light turns the cliff walls golden, which is best for photos. Chilechuan Grassland is close to the city, suitable for those short on time. Go in summer when the grass is ankle-deep, and you can see the Daqing Mountains in the distance. ⚠️ Don't trust the roadside horse-riding touts; their prices are inflated. Walk further in and find a legitimate horse farm where you can ride for a long loop for 50 yuan. 🍜 Go back to the city to eat shaomai, which is sold by the liang (50g), with 8 pieces per liang. I didn't know this the first time and ordered 3 liang; I was nearly scared to death when it was served. Pair it with brick tea to cut the grease. 🚄 Get off at Hohhot East Station. For Laoniuwan, I recommend chartering a car for about 300 yuan round trip, which saves 3 hours compared to transferring between two shuttle buses. 05 Harbin | Heilongjiang I advise you to put the Ice and Snow World on the last day of your trip. Standing in minus 30 degrees for 4 hours is no joke. ⏰ Enter the park at 3:30 PM, play the attractions first, and wait until it gets dark and the lights come on to take photos. The big slide has a wait time of at least an hour, so go early. ⚠️ Stick a hand warmer to your phone, or it will shut down 3 seconds after you take it out. Bring two power banks. Volga Manor is suitable for the second day; it's less crowded, and the Russian-style architecture covered in snow looks like you've walked into an oil painting. For Saint Sophia Cathedral Square, ⏰ go in the evening; the moment the pigeons take flight with the cathedral's onion domes set against the twilight is worth it. 🍜 The Madieer popsicle on Central Street is 5 yuan each, and it's only fun to eat while standing in the snow. For iron pot stew, find one in a residential area; don't eat at the entrance of the scenic area. 06 Beijing The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Beihai Park—my advice for these four places is: no more than two a day, don't be greedy. For the Forbidden City, ⏰ enter at 8:30 AM, walk the central axis first, then turn to the East and West Six Palaces. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays. Book tickets 7 days in advance and don't trust scalpers. Go to the Summer Palace in the afternoon, enter from the North Palace Gate, climb Longevity Hill, and take a boat down to Nanhu Island. You can combine the Temple of Heaven and Beihai Park into one day. Watch the old men doing Tai Chi at the Temple of Heaven in the morning; the Echo Wall is now blocked off so you can't press against the wall. For boating at Beihai, ⏰ go at dusk when the White Pagoda is reflected in the water—that's the look of old Beijing. 🚄 The subway is the most reliable; don't take a taxi. 🍜 Just try Huguosi Snacks for the novelty; if you really want to eat well, duck into the hutongs to find stewed offal (luzhu) and soybean paste noodles (zhajiangmian). 07 Meizhou | Guangdong Yannanfei Tea Garden—before I went, I thought it was just an ordinary tea plantation, but when I arrived, I realized it was the entire mountain. The tea trees are neatly trimmed, winding around the mountain in rows. ⏰ Go at 8:00 AM while the mist hasn't cleared, and you'll see tea-picking aunties wearing bamboo hats walking between the ridges. The air is full of the scent of tea; take a deep breath, and your lungs will feel clean. ⚠️ Don't wear white shoes; the red soil stains and won't wash out. 🍜 Eat Hakka cuisine at Weilong Shifu for lunch: salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu, and braised pork with preserved mustard greens. Three people can order four dishes for just over 100 yuan. You can buy freshly roasted green tea in the tea fields, which is cheaper than outside. 🚄 It's a 40-minute taxi ride from Meizhou West Station. It's suitable for bringing elderly people; the paths are flat, and there are pavilions everywhere to sit if you get tired. 08 Changchun | Changchun The Museum of the Imperial Palace of the Manchu State—I did my homework before going, but my heart still felt heavy when I arrived. In the Tongde Hall and Jixi Building, every room feels like it's been frozen in time. ⏰ Allow 3 hours and rent an audio guide, otherwise you won't understand what you're seeing. Changchun World Sculpture Park is suitable for the afternoon. The sculptures are scattered across the lawn and by the lake; it takes 2 hours to walk around. Take kids to Changying Century City; the attractions are more amusement-oriented, and adults might find them just okay. Save Jingyuetan for the evening; ⏰ rent a bicycle to ride around the lake for 20 yuan an hour—the breeze is incredibly comfortable. ⚠️ The Museum of the Imperial Palace of the Manchu State and Changying Century City are in opposite directions, so don't schedule them for the same day. 🚄 You can get to all of them by subway, and taxis aren't expensive either. 🍜 Find a Northeast Chinese restaurant in the evening for guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) and xueyidousha (snow-coated red bean paste); the portions are large, so order fewer dishes. None of these 8 places are the type you'll "regret not visiting for the rest of your life." But after you've been, you'll remember the light of a certain afternoon or the taste of a certain bowl of soup. Pick one or two, and take your time.

There are some places you don't expect much from before you arrive, but by the time you leave, you're already planning your next trip. These 8 small cities have incredibly consistent reputations. I'll go through them one by one so you can pick where to go. 1️⃣ Sanming | Fujian Don't rush to Dajin Lake at noon. ⏰ Board the boat before 9:00 AM; the water is still misty, and the Danxia red cliffs look like they've just been pulled from the water. Boat tickets plus admission tickets are around ¥160 during peak season, but check official announcements for the exact daily price. Taining Ancient City is best for an afternoon stroll. 📍 Under the old camphor tree at the entrance of Shangshudi, locals play chess for the whole afternoon. The ancient city itself doesn't charge a general admission fee; buy tickets for small attractions individually. Don't just walk into every place you see. 🍜 For dinner, look for warm mushroom buns and jade rolls in the ancient city. You can eat your fill for about ¥30 per person. ⚠️ Don't trust the "chartered boat tours" offered by solicitors at the Dajin Lake pier. Official boat schedules are posted at the ticket office. If you're traveling with seniors, the ancient city is mostly flat, so wheelchairs are fine. The day after rain, Dajin Lake's colors are most vibrant, but the steps are slippery, so wear shoes with good grip. 2️⃣ Meizhou | Guangdong I suggest entering the Yannanfei Tea Plantation ⏰ after 4:00 PM. The sun slants down, making the tea ridges glow layer by layer—no filters needed for photos. Tickets are around ¥80, with sightseeing cars extra. 🍜 For the Hakka salt-baked chicken and stuffed tofu at the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain, a whole chicken is just over ¥100, which is perfect for two or three people. Don't eat at the first place you see near the scenic area entrance; walk 200m further in, and the price drops by 30%. 📍 The core viewing platform for the tea plantation is on the slope with the "Yannanfei" characters. It's a 15-min walk up, or those with limited mobility can take a sightseeing car. ⚠️ Ask in advance if tea picking is available; it's not open every day. This place is great for couples and parents, but pure hikers might find it too tame. Visit around Qingming in the spring to catch the tea-picking season, when the air is full of fresh, grassy scents. 3️⃣ Kashgar | Xinjiang You don't need to pick a specific time for Kashgar Ancient City. ⏰ Just watch the opening ceremony at 10:00 AM and then wander into the alleys. 📍 At the century-old teahouse on Wusitangboyi Road, you can sit for a whole morning with a pot of tea for ¥5. The ancient city itself is free, but don't miss the handmade copperware on Craftsman Street. Watching the masters hammer away all afternoon is free. ⚠️ Some alleys in the old city are residential areas; don't force your way in if there's a curtain hanging at the entrance. The Pamir Plateau and the Stone City need a separate day. Charter a car for the round trip and get your border permit in Kashgar in advance. Stone City tickets are around ¥30, and the city walls look best at sunset. 🍜 Baked buns and jar meat in the ancient city will fill you up for ¥10. If you're with children, be aware that the old city alleys are narrow, so strollers aren't very convenient; a baby carrier is more practical. 4️⃣ Shannan | Tibet At Yamdrok Lake, the water is bluest ⏰ between noon and 3:00 PM, when the cloud shadows look like spilled paint. 📍 The Gangbala Pass viewing platform is the most crowded. If you drive a bit further down, there's a free, wild spot with the same great angle. The altitude is 4,400m. ⚠️ Don't jump or run; stand for 2 mins after getting out of the car before moving. It's windy, so wear a hat with a strap, or it'll fly right into the lake. Chartering a car from Lhasa takes over 2 hours one way. Carpooling costs ¥150–¥200 per person, depending on the season. There are Tibetan mastiffs by the lake for photos for a fee; ask clearly before taking pictures. Suitable for those in good physical condition; be cautious if traveling with seniors or children. There are rapeseed flowers by the lake in July and August, but it's also the rainy season, so thick clouds might block the view. 5️⃣ Bazhong | Sichuan I recommend visiting Guangwu Mountain ⏰ from late October to mid-November. The red leaves cover the mountains; other months, it's just ordinary green hills. 📍 Daba Scenic Area and Shibayue Tan are two separate routes. Only choose one per day; don't be greedy. Tickets are around ¥100 during peak season, and the sightseeing car is ¥40; check official announcements for the exact daily price. ⚠️ Traffic jams during the red leaf season can last 2 hours on weekends, so either arrive before 7:00 AM or stay on the mountain. 🍜 Nanjiang yellow goat soup is about ¥50 per person in the town at the foot of the mountain—it's warming. Shibayue Tan is great for hiking enthusiasts; the whole route takes 4 hours. Seniors should stick to Daba. Driving yourself is most convenient here; public transport is infrequent. The boardwalks are slippery after rain, so wear non-slip shoes and don't wear white sneakers. 6️⃣ Hechi | Guangxi Plan Donglan landscapes and Jiudun Tianchuang for the same day. ⏰ Go to Jiudun Tianchuang in the morning; the water is so clear you can see the bottom, and the light is best before 10:00 AM. 📍 There's a natural diving platform by the skylight where local kids jump in—just watch. Xiangbei Shangri-La and Sanli Yangdu are best for the afternoon. Take a bamboo raft for a drift; the mountains on both sides look like a painting. Bamboo rafts cost a few dozen yuan per person. ⚠️ Agree on the price and duration before getting on the raft; don't let them add fees halfway. 🍜 For Bama fragrant pig and hemp seed soup, look for small restaurants in Du'an County; it's about ¥40 per person. It's fine to let kids play in the water, but the skylight is deep, so don't let them get close alone. These four spots are in different directions in Hechi; driving is easiest, while public transport requires transfers. It's great for escaping the summer heat, but don't go into the water in winter when it's cold. 7️⃣ Guyuan | Ningxia Go to Xumishan Grottoes ⏰ in the morning so the light hits the Buddha statues and you can see the details clearly. Tickets are around ¥60, with sightseeing cars extra. 📍 The sitting Buddha in the Great Buddha Pavilion is over 20m tall. The steps up are steep, so take your time. ⚠️ The grottoes are spread across several hills. Don't just look at the Great Buddha and leave; there are Northern Wei and Northern Zhou grottoes further in that are quiet and uncrowded. 🍜 For Guyuan's lamb offal noodles and hand-grabbed lamb, old shops in the city center cost about ¥50 per person. This place is for those interested in grottoes and the Silk Road; those just looking for scenery might find it monotonous. If traveling with seniors, the sightseeing car plus the main grottoes are enough for 2 hours. It's dusty in the spring, so wear a mask. In winter, the grottoes against the loess mountains after snow have a unique charm. 8️⃣ Baiyin | Gansu Enter the Yellow River Stone Forest ⏰ after 4:00 PM. The light slants in, stretching the shadows of the stone pillars. Tickets plus sightseeing car are just over ¥100; check official announcements for the exact daily price. 📍 Longwan Village is the entrance. Take a bus first, then switch to a donkey cart or hike. The donkey cart drivers sing folk songs along the way; it costs a few dozen yuan per person and is quite interesting. ⚠️ The hike is over 10km long; know your limits and don't push yourself. 🍜 For Yellow River carp and offal noodles at the village farmhouses, it's about ¥60 per person. This place is great for those who love geological wonders and photography. It's fine to bring kids, but it's windy, so keep them warm. It's over an hour's drive from Baiyin city center; driving yourself is most convenient. Look back when leaving the valley at dusk; the stone forest is dyed gold by the sunset, making it worth the price of admission. None of these 8 places rely on filters. The mist in Sanming, the tea in Kashgar, the blue of Yamdrok Lake, and the red of Guangwu Mountain each have their own memorable points. How many have you been to? Let me know in the comments which one you'd most like to visit a second time.

Don't want to deal with National Day crowds? 8 low-cost small cities to explore at your own pace 01 Altay | Xinjiang Visiting Altay during National Day is a gamble that the snow line will be just right at the mountainside. Enter the Kanas Lake scenic area before 8:00 AM; the mist hasn't cleared yet, and the lake looks like a sleepy piece of jade. ⏰ Before mid-October, the birch forests are at their peak yellow; any later, and they'll just be bare branches. Don't just take the shuttle bus in Koktokay. Walk the trail along the Irtysh River for 40 minutes; the crevices between the rocks are full of wild berries. 📍 Find a Kazakh herdsman's home in the Altay grassland cultural area for a bowl of milk tea. It costs CNY 5—it's salty enough to make you frown, but it warms you down to your toes. ⚠️ Hotel prices triple during National Day. Staying in Burqin County saves you half compared to staying inside the scenic area. The snow scenery in Northern Xinjiang doesn't stabilize until the end of October; if you go too early, you'll only see sleet. 🚄 It's a 1-hour flight from Urumqi to Altay. Renting a car upon arrival offers the most freedom. 02 Nantong | Jiangsu Haohe River is the living room for the people of Nantong. There's no admission fee, and a full loop is 5 km. ⏰ Go after 5:00 PM when the lights are on and someone is playing the saxophone under the bridge arch. 📍 Walk south from Beihao Bridge, passing the back gate of the Nantong Museum; it's less crowded and full of trees. 🍜 A time-honored shop by the river sells clam cakes for CNY 6 each. Eat them while they're hot, or they'll taste fishy when cold. Don't buy blue calico fabric inside the scenic area; go to the small alleys of Sijie Street, where the same square scarf is CNY 20 cheaper. ⚠️ The Haohe River cruise has a wait time of at least 40 minutes during the day, so walking is better. If you're with seniors, take the sightseeing bus; it costs CNY 10 for the full loop and allows you to hop on and off. A taxi from Nantong Station to the north bank of Haohe River costs about CNY 15. 03 Hechi | Guangxi Hechi is the kind of place you'd pass by 10 times without turning in, but if you do, you're in for a treat. The landscapes of Donglan are perfect for a road trip. The Hongshui River First Bend observation deck is free, but parking costs CNY 10. ⏰ Arrive before 7:00 AM when the river is misty and the mountain peaks look like they're floating in soup. Jiudun Tianchuang is a spring eye emerging from an underground river. The water is so clear you can count the stones, but ⚠️ don't go into the water—the undercurrents are no joke. You need to take a boat to enter Xiangbei Shangri-La; the boat ticket is CNY 60. Whether it's worth it depends on if you like peace and quiet. The bamboo rafts at Sanli Yangdu are half the price of those in Yangshuo—CNY 120 for a 1.5-hour float. 📍 Look for Master Wei; his place is under the third banyan tree at the ferry crossing, and he's a very honest man. There's no high-speed rail to Hechi; it's a 3-hour bus ride from Nanning. 04 Ningbo | Zhejiang Don't just visit the Tianyi Pavilion at Tianyi Pavilion & Moon Lake; the stone path along Moon Lake is the real highlight. ⏰ Before 9:00 AM on weekdays, local seniors practice Tai Chi by the lake before the tourists arrive. 📍 Enter from the Changchun Road entrance and walk south to Moon Lake Bridge; the whole way is filled with the scent of osmanthus. The Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area is great for kids. Tengtou Village offers alpaca feeding and strawberry picking, but ⚠️ the strawberries aren't ripe during National Day, so don't be fooled by the promotional photos. Qiantong Ancient Town is quieter than Wuzhen. Its "three treasures" are tofu, dried tofu, and hollow fried tofu. 🍜 The "Qiantong Three Treasures" shop in the middle of the old street is the most authentic, costing CNY 15 for a set. 🚄 Take Metro Line 2 from Ningbo Station to Gulou, then transfer to a bus to Qiantong, which takes about 1 hour. Staying at a homestay by Moon Lake costs about CNY 400 during National Day, which is cheaper than Dongqian Lake. 05 Hohhot | Inner Mongolia Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon is perfect for a National Day visit. ⏰ Arrive at 4:00 PM when the sunlight hits the cliffs at an angle; the Yellow River looks green, not yellow. 📍 It's a 2.5-hour drive from downtown Hohhot. The last stretch of mountain road is narrow, so drive slowly if you're a beginner. Chilechuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Area is just north of the city, so you don't need to travel all the way to Xilamuren. ⏰ Go at 6:00 PM; the sunset against the silhouette of the yurts makes for great photos without any filters. 🍜 Head back to the city for shaomai. They are weighed by the wrapper; 8 pieces per liang (50g), served with brick tea to cut the grease. ⚠️ Horseback riding on the grassland costs CNY 150 per loop; bargain it down to CNY 80 before you get on. It's 0 degrees at night in October, so bring a down jacket. A taxi from Hohhot East Station to Chilechuan costs about CNY 30. 06 Dali | Yunnan Arrive at Xizhou Ancient Town before 8:00 AM, and no one will fight you for a photo spot at the corner building. ⏰ The rice fields were just harvested at the end of September, leaving only stubble, but the light is soft. 📍 Walk east from Sifang Street to the screen wall at the back gate of the Yan Family Compound; it looks like an oil painting in photos. Admission to the Chongsheng Temple and Three Pagodas Cultural Tourism Area is CNY 75. ⚠️ Don't take the electric cart; it's a 20-minute walk to the Three Pagodas Reflection Pool, where the reflection is clearest after 3:00 PM. Don't cycle the entire Erhai Lake; riding an e-bike from Caicun to Xizhou is 40 km, which is just right for the battery. Nanzhao Folklore Island is opposite Shuanglang. The boat ticket is CNY 50. There's only a sculpture and an observation deck on the island, so you won't miss much if you skip it. 🍜 Buy the sweet version of the Xizhou posu baba (flaky pastry) for CNY 8; the savory one tastes like chewing dough. The bus from Dali Station to the Ancient Town costs CNY 3. 07 Haikou | Hainan Wugong Temple is best visited in the morning. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM, when the coconut tree shadows are long. 📍 Enter from the main gate, see the Fusu Spring first, then go up to the First Building of Hainan; you can finish the tour in half an hour. Admission is CNY 20, with half-price for students. Don't just walk along Zhongshan Road in Qilou Old Street; turn into Bo'ai North Road, where people still live and clotheslines hang overhead. 🍜 The spicy soup rice in the old street is CNY 10 a bowl; it has a strong peppery kick and is served with Chinese sausage. ⚠️ Don't buy pre-cut fruit on the roadside; the scales aren't accurate. The Volcano Park is 20 km from the city center. 🚄 It takes 1 hour by tourist bus. It's a 40-minute climb to the top, where the crater is covered in lush greenery, looking like a big bowl. If you're with seniors, take the electric cart for CNY 15 round trip. A taxi from Haikou East Station to Qilou costs about CNY 25. 08 Chenzhou | Hunan The photo spot at Gaoyiling Danxia is by the Giant Lizard Lake. ⏰ Go at 5:00 PM; the red rocks against the green water look great in that light. 📍 Set your navigation to "Gaoyiling Tourist Area," not "Gaoyiling Village"—they are 3 km apart. Admission is CNY 80. ⚠️ Don't go on rainy days; the rocks are too slippery to stand on. At Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area, watch the mist over Little Dongjiang at 6:30 AM. The fisherman casting his net is a performance, but it's truly beautiful. ⏰ There's mist from April to October, so you can still catch it at the end of the National Day holiday. 🍜 Eat Dongjiang fish at the entrance of the scenic area for CNY 30 per jin (500g); it's freshest when steamed. Mangshan Five-Finger Peak is great for hiking. The round-trip cable car is CNY 120. ⚠️ It's windy at the summit, so bring a windbreaker. The bus from Chenzhou West Station to Dongjiang Lake takes 1 hour and costs CNY 15. Staying in Zixing city center, you can find a decent place for CNY 200 during National Day. For these 8 places, I personally recommend Hechi and Chenzhou. One doesn't require fighting for tickets, and the other doesn't require waiting in line. Pick one and explore at your own pace.

September to October is the golden window for road trips. The summer crowds have faded, the autumn colors are just starting to show, and gas prices are significantly lower than during the National Day holiday. I've selected 8 routes I've personally driven or verified. They are uncrowded, scenic, and easy to drive. No fluff, just the facts. 01 Xinzhou | Shanxi I recommend visiting Yanmenguan in the morning. ⏰ Arrive before 8:00 AM. The morning mist clings to the Great Wall, and there's almost no one competing for photo spots. After noon, tour groups flood in, and your photos will just be the backs of people's heads. Laoniuwan is the highlight of this trip. The Yellow River and the Great Wall meet here. The water is still, the earth is yellow, and standing on the cliff, you can hear the wind passing through the ravines. 📍 Navigate to "Laoniuwan Village" instead of the scenic area entrance to save on a shuttle bus ride. Set aside a full day for Mount Wutai. Admission tickets and reservations are subject to official daily announcements. During peak season, there's a quota for self-driving vehicles entering the mountain, so book early. ⚠️ The temperature difference on the mountain is significant. By late September, you'll need a light down jacket; don't try to tough it out. This route is suitable for traveling with seniors; the road conditions are good, and the elevation gain is gradual. It's not suitable for those who want to rush; it's more comfortable to visit one spot per day. 02 Yili | Xinjiang Yili in September and October is like an overturned palette. The grass in Kalajun has turned yellow, but that golden hue against the snow-capped mountains is even more stunning than in summer. ⏰ Enter the grasslands after 4:00 PM; the side lighting gives the grassy slopes depth. Turgen Apricot Blossom Valley only blooms in spring. Visiting in autumn is for the valley terrain and herds; don't go expecting to see flowers, or you'll be disappointed. Gongnaisi Grassland is perfect right now, with the birch trees in the river valley starting to change color. 📍 For a Yili Valley road trip, I recommend connecting via the northern section of the Duku Highway, but the Duku is usually closed in mid-October due to snow, so be sure to check road conditions before you go. 🚄 Most out-of-town travelers fly into Yining and rent a car, which saves two days compared to driving from Urumqi. As for food, for the baked buns and handmade ice cream on Yining Hanren Street, 🍜 I only recognize the one with the line in the alley. I can't remember the specific name, so just look for the stall where locals are walking away with bags. 03 Hechi | Guangxi Hechi is the most underrated part of Guangxi. The landscapes in Donglan are like a miniature Guilin, but without the crowds. Take a bamboo raft for a float; the banks are so quiet, all you can hear is the water. Jiudun Sky Window is a secret in the diving community. The water is so clear you can see rocks over 10 meters down. ⚠️ But don't go into the water yourself; the undercurrents are no joke. Just enjoy the view. Xiangbei Shangri-La is perfect for a slow stroll. The village is hidden in a mountain hollow. 📍 Enter from the Bama direction; the road is narrow, but the scenery is worth the price of admission. The sunset at Sanli Yangdu is worth waiting for; ⏰ after 5:30 PM, the light dyes the water a honey color. This route is suitable for solo travelers who enjoy peace and quiet. It's not for those seeking thrill-seeking activities; Hechi is all about "slow." 04 Zhangjiajie | Hunan Wulingyuan and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are actually the same area, so don't get confused by the names. Tickets are valid for 4 days, so plan reasonably and don't try to rush through it all in one day. I recommend visiting Tianmen Mountain in the afternoon. ⏰ Head up the mountain after 3:00 PM; the line for the glass skywalk is half as long, and you can catch the sunset at the lower cable car station. ⚠️ The temperature at the summit is 7–8 degrees lower than at the base, so a jacket is a must. In the Forest Park, Golden Whip Stream is great for families; the path is flat and there are many monkeys, but don't feed them—they really will snatch your bags. For the floating mountains in Yuanjiajie, arrive before 8:00 AM while the mist hasn't cleared yet; that's when it's most photogenic. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West Station, then it's about a 40-minute taxi ride to Wulingyuan. If you're driving, parking at the scenic area entrance is tight, so arrive early. 05 Tai'an | Shandong Mount Tai is most comfortable to climb in September. Summer is too muggy, and night climbing in October is unbearably cold. ⏰ I recommend starting from Hongmen at 3:00 PM. A leisurely 5–6 hour hike will get you to the top just in time for sunrise. 📍 The Hongmen Road route is a classic hiking trail with many stone steps, so be careful if you have bad knees. If you want to save energy, take a bus from Tianwai Village to Zhongtianmen, then take the cable car up. It's a fact that prices on the mountain are high—a bottle of water is 10 yuan. ⚠️ Carrying two bottles yourself is nothing to be ashamed of. Renting a military-style overcoat costs 30 yuan, which is enough for watching the sunrise. Don't rush off when you get down the mountain. Have a bowl of San soup and a baked flatbread in the old street of Tai'an; 🍜 it'll warm your stomach in the morning. This is suitable for people with average stamina; hardcore hikers will enjoy it even more. 06 Yulin | Shaanxi Wave Valley is the most photogenic part of this trip. The red sandstone has been eroded by wind into waves. ⏰ The light is most three-dimensional at 7:00 AM or 5:00 PM; at noon, the flat light makes it look like concrete. The Yellow River in Jia County has a moderate water volume in autumn. Standing at Xianglu Temple to watch the Yellow River bend is quite impressive. 📍 Xianglu Temple is right on the edge of the county town and is walkable, so you don't need to drive there specifically. Hongshi Gorge is best in the afternoon; it's cool in the canyon, there are many stone carvings, so take your time. ⚠️ It's windy in Yulin, so hold onto your hat, and be aware of no-fly zones for drones. This route is suitable for photography enthusiasts. It's not suitable for bringing very young children; some sections of Wave Valley don't have railings, so you have to keep an eye on them. 07 Pingliang | Gansu Kongtong Mountain starts changing colors in late September. Red leaves paired with Taoist temples are more flavorful than just climbing a mountain. ⏰ Go up the mountain in the morning and come down before 3:00 PM to avoid the afternoon backlight. 📍 The front mountain walking path has steep steps, while the back mountain road is gentler; take the back mountain if you're with seniors. The cable car is one-way, so calculate your stamina accordingly. The mutton soup with crumbled flatbread in Pingliang city at the foot of the mountain 🍜 is different from the one in Xi'an; the broth is clearer and the bread is chewier. ⚠️ There are few dining options on the mountain, so bring some dry rations. Suitable for those who like a combination of culture and light hiking. Not suitable for those just looking to check off a list; you need to settle down and explore Kongtong Mountain. 08 Yinchuan | Ningxia The reeds at Mingcui Lake turn white in autumn. ⏰ Go in the evening when the birds return to their nests and the water surface is gilded. 📍 It's close to the city, a 20-minute taxi ride, so you don't need to set aside a whole day. At the Helan Mountain Rock Art, you're looking at handprints and animals from thousands of years ago. ⚠️ Don't touch them, and don't use flash. Western Xia Imperial Tombs are best in the afternoon; the earthy yellow mausoleums in the Gobi Desert are full of desolation. In Lingwu Shuidonggou, you can experience the hidden military tunnels and canyons. 🚄 It's about a one-hour drive from Yinchuan city. Admission tickets and opening hours are subject to official daily announcements. Yinchuan is generally suitable for families; the roads are flat, attractions are concentrated, and the food is good. Hand-grabbed mutton and selenium-enriched watermelons—🍜 coming in autumn is just in time for the tail end of the watermelon season. Of these 8 routes, I most recommend Xinzhou and Hechi; they are unrealistically uncrowded. Which direction are you thinking of driving recently? Let's chat in the comments, and I'll help you look at the route.

September airfares and hotel prices are quietly dropping; the summer crowds have just receded, and the National Day price hikes haven't arrived yet. I've scoured train ticket and hostel prices and picked out these eight places. Less crowded, cheaper, and with perfect weather—I've checked them out for you first. 01 Nanjing|Jiangsu September in Nanjing is finally less sweltering; the plane tree leaves are starting to turn yellow, and there's a breeze on the streets. ⏰ Go to Xuanwu Lake before 7 am. The lakeside path is only frequented by elderly men doing morning exercises and people walking their dogs; the lake is so quiet you can hear the sound of oars. The Presidential Palace and Confucius Temple-Qinhuai Scenic Area are next to the subway; you can visit them all in a day. 📍 Don't skip the West Garden of the Presidential Palace. Many people head straight for the main hall to take photos, but the garden behind it is the real highlight. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays, don't make a wasted trip. Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Area is far from the city center; it takes more than an hour by subway and bus. The underground palace is indeed impressive, but the ticket price is not cheap; students can save a little. It's suitable for those willing to spend half a day; those in a rush can skip it. As for food, the snacks around Confucius Temple are overpriced. Walk a few steps towards Laomendong, and you'll find decent duck blood soup and xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). Stay along the Xinjiekou or Confucius Temple subway line; you can find hostel beds for around 60-70 yuan. 🚄 It takes half an hour by subway from Nanjing South Railway Station to the city center; don't take a taxi. 02 Qingyuan|Guangdong The most worthwhile trip in Qingyuan is to the Lianzhou Underground River. Even in September, Guangdong is still hot, but entering the cave instantly cools you down. Boats float on the underground river, with stalactites overhead. ⏰ It's recommended to go in the morning when it's less crowded and the light shining in from the cave entrance is at its best. It takes more than two hours to drive from Qingyuan city to Lianzhou; driving is the most convenient. If you don't have a car, there are buses from Qingyuan Bus Station to Lianzhou, then you can transfer to local transportation. ⚠️ The cave is slippery; avoid wearing white shoes, and sandals are also slippery. There aren't many decent restaurants around the Lianzhou Underground River. It's recommended to bring your own food or eat in Lianzhou city before going in. Qingyuan chicken is their specialty; find an established restaurant in the city, and half a chicken is enough for two people. Staying in Lianzhou city is cheaper than staying near the scenic area entrance; you can find clean accommodations for just over 100 yuan. September isn't peak season, so you can usually book a room on the same day. It's suitable for those who want to escape the heat but don't want to travel too far, and it's family-friendly, but not convenient for strollers. 03 Hechi|Guangxi Hechi is an underrated place. Donglan Mountain and Water, Jiudun Sky Window, Xiangbei Paradise, and Sanliyangdu—the names sound like paintings, and they truly live up to the description. In September, the water level is still high, and the water in the sky windows is so clear you can see the bottom. Jiudun Sky Window is best visited in the morning when the sunlight shines directly into the water, making it an unbelievably blue color. 📍 Remember to bring a swimsuit; you can swim. Xiangbei Paradise requires a boat ride; the banks are lined with bamboo forests and rice paddies, so quiet you can only hear the sound of oars. Sanliyangdu is best visited in the evening; rent a bamboo raft and drift slowly, watching the sunset paint the water orange. ⚠️ The price of the bamboo raft is negotiable, don't agree immediately. Donglan Mountain and Water is more hiking-oriented; wear comfortable shoes, and older people can walk on the gentler sections. Transportation in Hechi is a weakness; the attractions are far apart, so hiring a car or driving yourself is recommended. Staying in Jinchengjiang city is convenient for dining; rice noodles and pickled vegetables are inexpensive. If you're on a tight budget, this place won't cost much. 04 Longnan | Gansu Longnan is in Gansu, but it looks like the Jiangnan region. Wenxian Tianchi is hidden in the mountains; September is the perfect time to visit, with its blue-green waters surrounded by primeval forests. ⏰ The mornings are most beautiful when foggy, like a fairyland, but the roads are difficult to navigate, so drive carefully. Guange Valley is another delightful surprise, with canyons, waterfalls, and lakes strung together. Hiking the entire area takes most of the day; those with average stamina can turn back after reaching the large waterfall in the middle. 📍 There are vendors selling roasted potatoes and wild vegetable pancakes at the entrance of the valley—cheap and filling. Longnan cuisine leans towards Sichuan style; noodles, jiaotuan (a type of porridge), and cured meat are all worth trying. Staying in Wudu District, you can find decent hotels for around 100 yuan. 🚄 There are trains from Longnan Station, but you need to transfer to get to the scenic area; it's recommended to check train schedules in advance. September in Longnan is cool in the mornings and evenings, so bring a jacket. Suitable for those who enjoy natural scenery and don't mind the travel hassle. Entrance fees are inexpensive; Guange Valley and Tianchi combined are under 200 yuan. 05 Shigatse | Tibet September is the most comfortable time of year in Shigatse; the rainy season has just ended, and the sky is a clear, bright blue. Visibility is high at Mount Everest Base Camp during this season, increasing the chances of seeing the sunrise over the mountains. ⏰ Sunset and sunrise are the two golden hours. Tashilhunpo Monastery is in the city center and within walking distance. Going in the afternoon, the light shining on the golden roof is particularly beautiful. ⚠️ Photography is not allowed inside the temples; please respect the rules. The entrance fee is not expensive, but you can join a guided tour. A border permit is required to visit Mount Everest; obtain it in advance in your place of residence or Lhasa. The journey from Shigatse to the base camp is long; it's recommended to share a ride or join a small group tour, as it's not cost-effective to travel alone. Altitude sickness is real; don't push yourself, take it slow. Staying in Shigatse city is more comfortable than staying at the base camp, where tents are generally less comfortable and more expensive. September isn't the peak season, but it's still advisable to book your Everest tour in advance. Suitable for those in good physical condition who want to see snow-capped mountains; the elderly and children should be cautious. 06 Changde | Hunan Changde Taohuayuan Tourist Area: Going in September isn't about seeing peach blossoms, but about seeing mountains, rivers, and pastoral scenery. Fewer crowds and cheaper tickets. ⏰ Enter the scenic area in the morning and walk along the Qinxi River. The banks are lined with rice paddies and bamboo forests, making it surprisingly peaceful for a tourist destination. The essence of Taohuayuan (Peach Blossom Spring) is its "sudden enlightenment" atmosphere. Don't expect anything spectacular, but it's very relaxing. 📍 The Qin Valley section is the most worthwhile to walk through, with its streams, stone bridges, and old houses, perfect for a leisurely stroll. ⚠️ There are limited dining options within the scenic area, so it's recommended to bring your own food or eat out. Changde city's rice noodles are a hidden gem—beef noodles and shredded pork noodles are great for a quick breakfast, costing only a few yuan. Staying in the city center offers cheaper hotels, and a taxi ride to Taohuayuan takes about half an hour. 🚄 There's a high-speed train from Changde Station, making it a quick trip from Changsha. Suitable for a short weekend trip, also suitable for bringing parents, as the roads are relatively flat. September in Hunan is still hot, so bring an umbrella and don't skimp on sun protection. If you're on a tight budget, you can spend less than 200 yuan per day here. 07 Putian | Fujian Meizhou Island Mazu Cultural Tourism Area: Not crowded in September, with a pleasant sea breeze. ⏰ Take a boat to the island in the morning. First, visit the Mazu Ancestral Temple; it's bustling but not crowded. Then go to the Goose Tail Stone Garden; the sea-eroded landforms are very photogenic. You can rent electric scooters on the island for a few dozen yuan a day; it's less strenuous than walking. 📍 The Golden Beach area is best visited in the afternoon; the beach is wide and photogenic after low tide. ⚠️ Buy boat tickets and entrance tickets separately; don't be fooled by scalpers. There are buses from Putian city to the Meizhou Island pier, and taxis are also inexpensive. Staying in a guesthouse on the island is more interesting than staying in the city; you can get a sea-view room for around 100 yuan. September isn't peak typhoon season, but check the weather before you go. For food, Putian braised noodles and stir-fried pork are local specialties; the prices at old shops in the city are half the price of those in the tourist areas. Suitable for those who want to see the sea but don't want the crowds in Sanya; suitable for couples and families. 08 Bijie | Guizhou Visit Zhijin Cave and Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area in Bijie in September to avoid the crowds during rhododendron season. Zhijin Cave features a karst cave ceiling; the cave halls are incredibly large, and the lighting is sophisticated. ⏰ Go in the morning to avoid crowds; the entire hike takes a little over two hours. Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area isn't in bloom in September, but the mountain scenery and air are still beautiful, perfect for hiking. 📍 If you only want to see caves, Zhijin Cave is a separate trip; it's easily accessible by high-speed rail from Guiyang. ⚠️ There are many steps inside the cave; those with knee problems should be cautious. Accommodation in Bijie city is inexpensive; you can find clean rooms for under 100 yuan. For food, don't miss the local specialties of hot pot and mutton rice noodles. 🚄 The high-speed rail journey from Guiyang to Bijie takes a little over an hour, making it a convenient stop along the way from Guiyang. September in Guizhou is cool in the mornings and evenings; bring a light jacket. Suitable for those who appreciate geological wonders and a slow pace of life, this destination offers a comfortable experience even on a tight budget. These eight places are all great value for a September trip. I highly recommend Hechi and Longnan – less crowded, more authentic scenery, and less expensive. Just pick one, book your tickets, and go! Airfares and hotels are quietly dropping in September; the summer crowds have just subsided, and the National Day price hikes haven't arrived yet. I've scoured train ticket and hostel prices and selected these eight places. Less crowded, cheaper, and with perfect weather – I've personally checked them out for you. 01 Nanjing | Jiangsu September in Nanjing is finally less sweltering; the plane tree leaves are starting to turn yellow, and there's a gentle breeze on the streets. ⏰ Head to Xuanwu Lake before 7 AM. The lakeside path is only frequented by elderly men doing morning exercises and people walking their dogs; the lake is so quiet you can hear the sound of oars. The Presidential Palace and the Confucius Temple-Qinhuai Scenic Area are next to the subway; you can easily visit them all in a day. 📍 Don't skip the West Garden of the Presidential Palace. Many people head straight for the main hall to take photos, but the garden behind it is the real highlight. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays, don't waste your time. Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Area is far from the city center; it takes over an hour by subway and bus. The underground palace is indeed impressive, but the ticket is expensive. Students can save a little. Suitable for those willing to spend half a day; those in a rush can skip it. 🚄 Nanjing South Railway Station is half an hour by subway from the city center; don't take a taxi. 02 Qingyuan|Guangdong The most worthwhile place to visit in Qingyuan is the Lianzhou Underground River. Even in September, Guangdong is still hot, but going into the cave instantly cools you down. Boats travel on the underground river, with stalactites overhead. ⏰ It's recommended to go in the morning when it's less crowded and the light shines in from the cave entrance, creating the best view. It takes over two hours to drive from Qingyuan city to Lianzhou; driving is the most convenient option. If you're not driving, there are buses from Qingyuan Bus Station to Lianzhou, then you can transfer to a local bus. ⚠️ The cave is slippery; avoid wearing white shoes, and sandals are also slippery. There aren't many decent restaurants around the Lianzhou Underground River, so it's recommended to bring your own food or eat in Lianzhou city before going in. Qingyuan chicken is their specialty; find a reputable restaurant in the city, and half a chicken is enough for two people. Staying in Lianzhou city is cheaper than staying near the scenic area entrance; you can find clean accommodations for just over 100 yuan. September isn't peak season, so you can usually book a room on the same day. It's suitable for those who want to escape the heat without traveling too far, and it's family-friendly, but not convenient for strollers. 03 Hechi|Guangxi Hechi is an underrated place. Donglan Mountain and Water, Jiudun Sky Window, Xiangbei Paradise, and Sanliyangdu—the names sound like paintings, and they truly live up to the description. In September, the water level is still high, and the water at the sky windows is so clear you can see the bottom. Jiudun Sky Window is best visited in the morning when the sunlight shines directly into the water, creating an unbelievable blue hue. 📍 Remember to bring your swimsuit; you can swim. Xiangbei Paradise requires a boat ride; the banks are lined with bamboo forests and rice paddies, and the only sound is the gentle lapping of oars. Sanliyangdu is best visited in the evening; rent a bamboo raft and drift slowly, watching the sunset paint the water orange. ⚠️ You can negotiate the price of the bamboo raft; don't agree immediately. Donglan Mountain and Water is more hiking-oriented; wear comfortable shoes, and older people can walk on the gentler sections. Transportation in Hechi is a weakness; the attractions are far apart, so hiring a car or driving yourself is recommended. Staying in Jinchengjiang city center makes dining convenient, and rice noodles and pickled vegetables are inexpensive. If you're on a tight budget, this place won't cost much. 04 Longnan | Gansu Longnan is in Gansu, but it looks like the Jiangnan region. Wenxian Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is hidden in the mountains; September is the perfect time to visit, with its turquoise waters and surrounding primeval forests. ⏰ The mornings are most beautiful when foggy, like a fairyland, but the roads are difficult to navigate, so drive carefully. Guange Valley is another surprise, with canyons, waterfalls, and lakes strung together. Hiking the entire valley takes most of the day; those with average stamina can turn back after reaching the large waterfall in the middle. 📍 There are vendors selling roasted potatoes and wild vegetable pancakes at the valley entrance—cheap and filling. Longnan's cuisine leans towards Sichuan style; noodles, jiaotuan (a type of porridge), and cured meat are all worth trying. Stay in Wudu District; you can find decent hotels for around 100 RMB. 🚄 There are trains from Longnan Station, but you need to transfer to get to the scenic area, so it's recommended to check train schedules in advance. September mornings and evenings in Longnan are cool, so bring a jacket. Suitable for those who enjoy natural scenery and don't mind the hassle of travel. Entrance fees are reasonable; Guange Valley and Tianchi combined cost less than 200 yuan. 05 Shigatse | Tibet September is the most comfortable time of year in Shigatse. The rainy season has just ended, and the sky is a clear, bright blue. Visibility is high at Mount Everest Base Camp during this season, increasing the chances of seeing the golden sunrise on the mountain. ⏰ Sunset and sunrise are the two golden hours. Tashilhunpo Monastery is located in the city and can be explored on foot. Visiting in the afternoon, when the light illuminates the golden summit, is particularly beautiful. ⚠️ Photography is not allowed inside the monasteries. Please respect the rules. Entrance fees are inexpensive, but guided tours can be joined by other tour groups. A border permit is required to visit Everest Base Camp; obtain it in advance in your place of residence or Lhasa. The journey from Shigatse to Base Camp is long; sharing a ride or joining a small group is recommended, as it's not cost-effective to travel alone. Altitude sickness is real; don't push yourself, take it slow. Staying in Shigatse city is more comfortable than staying at base camp, where tents are generally less comfortable and more expensive. September isn't the peak season, but it's still best to book your Everest Base Camp tour in advance. Suitable for those in good physical condition who want to see snow-capped mountains; elderly people and children should be cautious. 06 Changde | Hunan Changde Taohuayuan Tourist Area: Going in September isn't about seeing peach blossoms, but about seeing mountains, rivers, and pastoral scenery. Fewer people, and cheaper entrance fees. ⏰ Enter the scenic area in the morning and walk along the Qinxi River. The banks are lined with rice paddies and bamboo forests, quieter than a typical tourist area. The essence of Taohuayuan is the feeling of "sudden enlightenment." Don't expect anything spectacular, but it's very relaxing. 📍 The Qin Valley section is the most worthwhile to walk through, with its streams, stone bridges, and old houses, perfect for a leisurely stroll. ⚠️ There are limited dining options within the scenic area; it's recommended to bring your own food or eat out. Changde city's rice noodles are a hidden gem. Beef noodles and shredded pork noodles are great for breakfast, costing only a few yuan. Staying in the city center offers cheaper hotels, and a taxi ride to Taohuayuan takes about half an hour. 🚄 There's a high-speed train from Changde Station, making it a quick trip from Changsha. Suitable for a short weekend getaway, also suitable for bringing parents, as the roads are flat. Hunan is still hot in September, so bring an umbrella and don't skimp on sunscreen. If you're on a tight budget, it will cost less than 200 yuan per day. 07 Putian|Fujian Meizhou Island Mazu Cultural Tourism Area: Not crowded in September, with a pleasant sea breeze. ⏰ Take a boat to the island in the morning, first visiting the Mazu Ancestral Temple, which is bustling but not crowded. Then go to the Goose Tail Stone Garden, where the sea-eroded landforms are very photogenic. You can rent electric scooters on the island for a few dozen yuan a day, which is less strenuous than walking. 📍 The Golden Beach area is best visited in the afternoon; the beach is wide and photogenic after low tide. ⚠️ Buy boat tickets and entrance tickets separately; don't be fooled by scalpers. There are buses from Putian city center to Meizhou Island pier, and taxis are inexpensive. Staying in a guesthouse on the island is more interesting than staying in the city; you can get a sea-view room for around 100 yuan. September isn't peak typhoon season, but it's still best to check the weather before you go. For food, Putian braised noodles and stir-fried pork are local specialties; the prices at established shops in the city center are half the price of those in tourist areas. It's suitable for those who want to see the sea but don't want the crowds in Sanya; it's suitable for couples and families. 08 Bijie | Guizhou Visiting Zhijin Cave and Baili Rhododendron in Bijie in September is perfect to avoid the crowds during the rhododendron blooming season. Zhijin Cave has a karst cave ceiling; the cave halls are incredibly large, and the lighting is sophisticated. ⏰ Go in the morning; there are fewer people, and the entire walk takes a little over two hours. Baili Rhododendron isn't in bloom in September, but the mountain scenery and air are excellent, perfect for hiking. 📍 If you only want to see caves, Zhijin Cave can be visited separately; it's very convenient to take the high-speed train from Guiyang to Zhijin. ⚠️ There are many steps inside the cave, so those with knee problems should be cautious. Accommodation in Bijie city is cheap; you can find clean rooms for under 100 yuan. For food, don't miss the local specialties like hot pot and mutton rice noodles. 🚄 The high-speed train from Guiyang to Bijie takes a little over an hour, making it a good option for a side trip from Guiyang. September in Guizhou is cool in the mornings and evenings, so bring a light jacket. It's suitable for those who enjoy geological wonders and a slower pace of life; you can have a comfortable trip even on a tight budget. These eight places are all worth visiting in September. I highly recommend Hechi and Longnan; they're less crowded, have more authentic scenery, and are less expensive. Just choose one, book your tickets, and go!

Don't just focus on popular spots for budget National Day travel; these 8 places are uncrowded and affordable. 01 Xuzhou | Jiangsu Looking for a place that's uncrowded and cheap for National Day? Xuzhou is one. Yunlong Lake has free admission. A loop around the lake is about 10 km. Rent a shared bike and finish in 2 hours for less than CNY 5. ⏰ Arrive at the lake before 7:00 AM. Locals exercising outnumber tourists, and the lake is quiet, like you've booked the whole place. 📍 Enter from the Hunan Road entrance, walk south along the east lake road, and you'll see the Suti Causeway and Music Bridge. 🍜 For lunch, go near Hubushan for a bowl of spicy soup with laomo (flatbread); it's a solid meal for about CNY 15 per person. ⚠️ Parking around Yunlong Lake is tight during National Day. It's recommended to take Metro Line 2 to the Normal University Yunlong Campus station and walk from there. Suitable for seniors and children; the whole route is flat with no climbing. The dawn redwood forest starts changing color at the end of October. If you go a week early, it'll still be green, so don't get your hopes up too high. 02 Benxi | Liaoning The crowds at Benxi Water Cave during National Day are milder than you'd think, but the ticket price isn't cheap—over CNY 100 for adults. To save money, you can just do the dry cave section; the core underground river boat ticket is extra, so weigh your options. Guanmenshan National Forest Park is the highlight of this trip. ⏰ In early October, the maple leaves are just starting to color. The mix of red, green, and yellow has more depth than if they were all red. 📍 Enter from the main gate and walk toward Mingcui Valley; it's less crowded and the slope is gentle, perfect for a slow stroll. Huanren Wunv Mountain is great for those who like hiking, but it has many stairs, so seniors should be careful. 🚄 There's a tourist shuttle from Benxi Station to the Water Cave, taking about 40 minutes one way—half the price of a taxi. 🍜 A bowl of mutton soup at Xiaoshi Yizhuang is worth it; it's about CNY 25, rich and not gamey. ⚠️ Expect queues at the Water Cave to exceed 1 hour during National Day; it's recommended to buy tickets online in advance and go early. Accommodation in Benxi county is 30% cheaper than at the scenic area entrance, and a taxi there is only about CNY 20. 03 Jincheng | Shanxi The Huangcheng Xiangfu Ecological Cultural Tourism Zone is Jincheng's best card to play. The admission fee isn't low, but there are occasionally joint ticket discounts during National Day, so check the official announcement before you go. ⏰ The light hitting the city walls and plaques after 3:00 PM is the best; in the morning, the backlight makes everything look gray. 📍 Enter from Yushu Tower, walk along the city wall to Heshan Tower, then down to the inner mansion; the route is straightforward. 🍜 Yangcheng burnt liver and helu noodles outside the scenic area are local eats, costing around CNY 20 per person. ⚠️ The stairs inside the mansion are narrow and steep; wearing skirts or flip-flops will be very inconvenient. If you just want to save money, you can wander around the surrounding Huangcheng Village. There are many old Ming and Qing dynasty houses, and you can soak up the atmosphere without buying a ticket. Suitable for those interested in ancient architecture; if you're just there for photos, you might feel it's not worth it. 04 Pingdingshan | Henan The Yaoshan Mountain–Zhongyuan Giant Buddha combo is actually quite cost-effective for National Day. The Yaoshan admission fee plus the cable car is an expense, but the hot spring homestays at the foot of the mountain drop in price after the first half of the National Day holiday. ⏰ Take the first cable car up in the morning for a high chance of seeing a sea of clouds; after 10:00 AM, tour groups flood in and it gets crowded. 📍 It takes about 1 hour to walk from the Yingfeng Cable Car upper station to Yuhuangding (Jade Emperor Peak). The stone steps along the way are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. The Zhongyuan Giant Buddha is worth seeing if you're on the way; the golden Buddha is truly stunning in the sunlight, but there are a bit too many commercial facilities. ⚠️ Don't easily accept incense or donate to merit boxes; do what you can afford. 🍜 Lushan Lan Guo Cai (stewed dish) is a local specialty; one portion is enough for two people, about CNY 30 per person. 🚄 There's a bus from Pingdingshan West Station directly to Yaoshan, taking about 1.5 hours. Suitable for self-driving; public transport is infrequent. Book accommodation for National Day in advance; you can get a farmhouse stay at the foot of the mountain for just over CNY 100. 05 Bayingolin | Xinjiang Bayanbulak, the Taklamakan Desert, and the Tarim Populus Euphratica Forest Park—connecting these three spots is a classic route for budget travel in Southern Xinjiang, but transportation costs are the biggest expense during National Day. ⏰ To see the sunset at the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns in Bayanbulak, you need to get to the viewing platform before 7:00 PM, as the shuttle bus queue is very long. 📍 The Tarim Populus Euphratica Forest Park only turns golden in mid-October; going during National Day is a bit early, and the leaves are still green. The Taklamakan Desert Highway is suitable for self-driving; there are few gas stations along the way, so fill up before you leave. ⚠️ Mobile signal in the desert is intermittent, so don't go deep alone. 🍜 Korla's fragrant pears and baked buns (kao baozi) are cheap and delicious; you can buy a bunch in the market for CNY 10. Choosing accommodation in downtown Korla is half the price of staying near the scenic area; commuting every day is tiring but worth it. Suitable for those with plenty of time who can handle long car rides. The temperature difference between day and night in Southern Xinjiang during National Day is large, so bring both a thin down jacket and short sleeves. 06 Ganzhou | Jiangxi Shicheng and Sanbai Mountain are great choices in Ganzhou to avoid the crowds during National Day. The Danxia landform of Tongtianzhai in Shicheng has affordable admission and the climb isn't too crazy. ⏰ The glass bridge at Sanbai Mountain is uncrowded in the morning, but in the afternoon, the queue can make you question your life. 📍 Enter from the Dongfeng Lake entrance and walk toward Fu'ao Pond; the stream along the way keeps you cool. 🍜 Gannan stir-fried fish and Ningdu three-cup chicken are must-eats; you can eat until you're stuffed for about CNY 40 per person. ⚠️ Accommodation in Shicheng is tight during National Day; it's recommended to book two weeks in advance, otherwise you'll have to stay outside the county. Suitable for families; the Sanbai Mountain trail is flat, and you can even push a stroller for part of it. The weather in Gannan in October is comfortable—not stuffy or scorching—much better than visiting in summer. 🚄 There's a bus from Ganzhou Station to Shicheng, taking about 2 hours; self-driving is more flexible. 07 Tangshan | Hebei The Eastern Qing Tombs and Nanhu Park/Kailuan National Mine Park—one is historical, the other has an industrial vibe—neither are very crowded during National Day. The Eastern Qing Tombs area is large, so it's recommended to take the scenic area electric cart; walking will make your legs sore. ⏰ The light at the Eastern Qing Tombs is good in the morning. The Yuling Underground Palace is open, and it's chilly inside, so bring a jacket. 📍 Enter Nanhu Park from Danfeng Chaoyang Square and walk around to Longshan Pavilion for a panoramic view; it's free. 🍜 Tangshan Qizi sesame cakes and Wanlixiang roast chicken are great to carry as snacks on the road; they're cheap and filling. ⚠️ The Kailuan National Mine Park is closed on Mondays; confirm in advance during the National Day holiday adjustment period. Suitable for bringing elders; the Eastern Qing Tombs have strong storytelling, and seniors will enjoy it. Nanhu is suitable for an evening stroll; there are many locals walking, and it doesn't feel very touristy. Choose accommodation in downtown Tangshan; budget hotels are around CNY 150, which is more affordable than around the scenic area. 08 Hechi | Guangxi Hechi is the most off-the-beaten-path of these eight places. Donglan landscapes, Jiudun Sky Pit, Xiangbei Fairyland, and Sanli Yangdu—there's basically no such thing as queuing here. ⏰ The light at Jiudun Sky Pit is best from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM; the water is crystal clear, perfect for snorkeling and photos. 📍 You need to take a boat to enter Xiangbei Fairyland; the boat ticket is a few dozen yuan, and the bamboo forests and karst caves along the way are very photogenic. Sanli Yangdu is suitable for cycling; rent a bike and ride along the river; the rice paddies are still green in early October. ⚠️ Public transport in Hechi is inconvenient; it's recommended to drive or charter a car, otherwise you'll be stuck. 🍜 Hechi boiled rice noodles and Du'an sour pickles are appetizing; about CNY 15 per person. Choose accommodation in Jinchengjiang District; you can stay in a clean place for CNY 100. Suitable for those who like original ecological scenery and don't mind the hassle. It's still hot in Guangxi during National Day, so don't forget sunscreen and mosquito repellent. None of these eight places are "easy" to travel to, but they really do save money. Pick one near you and just head out for National Day. Which one have you been to? Let me know in the comments.

Hechi is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September or October❗❗ Take my advice and don't rush into it!! Don't be fooled by the "nine-grid" photos of Fengshan Sanmenhai's Tiffany blue skylight, Bama Baimo Cave's negative oxygen ions, Qibailong's thousands of mountains and valleys, Yizhou Xiajian River's Liu Sanjie folk songs, Panyang River's Longevity Village, and the First Bay of the Hongshui River. Hechi is a "scattered" map of northwest Guangxi, pieced together from Jinchengjiang, Yizhou, Bama, Fengshan, Dahua Qibailong, and Donglan. Visiting in September or October is a hardcore challenge: September brings the "autumn tiger" heat, humidity, and sudden showers; October brings the National Day health-tourism crowds and self-driving traffic; the winding mountain roads between counties are discouraging; it's hot outside the caves but cold inside; and you'll be pestered by salespeople in Longevity Village. 🚫 Why I advise against visiting in September or October 1️⃣ September has no "autumn coolness," just late-summer heat and high humidity The actual forecast for mid-to-late September in Hechi: highs of 31–34°C (88–93°F), with a "feels like" temperature of 34–40°C (93–104°F), humidity between 70% and 90%, and sudden showers. You might plan to "take a boat at Sanmenhai in the morning, walk along the Panyang River at noon, visit Baimo Cave in the afternoon, and hit the Yizhou night market in the evening," but in reality: you'll be sweating off your makeup by noon, the mountain roads will be foggy when it rains, the karst peak viewing platforms will be obscured by mist, and you'll feel sticky and stifled after leaving the caves. True autumn weather doesn't arrive until mid-to-late October. In September, you're just paying the "southern autumn tiger tax." 2️⃣ Sanmenhai/Bainiao Cave depend on the weather; rain makes the water murky and ruins the magic Sanmenhai's skylight shows its best blue light at noon on sunny days. After rain, the underground river in the sinkhole becomes murky, fog blankets the peaks, and boat photos turn gray. Bainiao Cave's water caves may even temporarily close if water levels rise. If you schedule a visit to Sanmenhai on any random day in September expecting a "mini-Jiuzhaigou of Guangxi," a sudden shower will turn your trip into "muddy green water + long boat queues + scalpers at the pier." 3️⃣ During National Day: Bama Poyue/Jiazhuan, Sanmenhai, and Qibailong are all overcrowded Hechi is usually off the beaten path, but its "longevity wellness + karst secret" appeal draws massive self-driving and senior tour groups during the double holidays. In Poyue Village, Bama County, Fengshan Sanmenhai Town, and the winding roads of Dahua Qibailong: parking is tight, homestay prices skyrocket, Baimo Cave/Bainiao Cave have long queues, and the First Bay of the Hongshui River viewing platform is packed with people. You pay peak-season rates only to experience holiday traffic—mountain roads are even more frustrating to get stuck on than city expressways. 4️⃣ Attractions are too spread out; without a car, you'll waste your vacation on county roads Jinchengjiang (Little Three Gorges) → Yizhou (Liu Sanjie's Hometown/Xiajian River) is 1 hour+, → Bama (Baimo Cave/Longevity Village) is 1.5 hours+, → Fengshan (Sanmenhai) is another 1 hour+, → Dahua Qibailong winding mountain roads is 2 hours+. County buses are infrequent and stop running early. Relying solely on public transport in Hechi means leaving in the morning, arriving at noon, taking photos for half an hour, and heading back to the city before dark. If you're a novice driver, the Bama–Fengshan–Qibailong mountain route is full of curves, has weak signal in some areas, and can be nerve-wracking when passing other cars after rain. If you don't have motion sickness medicine, you're halfway to a ruined trip. 5️⃣ Bama's "longevity" has two sides, and tourists are easily taken advantage of Longevity Village itself is free, but the surrounding scene is full of: roadside "miracle water/magnetic therapy/hemp oil group buys/health supplements," wellness centers trying to pull you into lectures, and souvenir shops with inflated prices. First-time visitors who want to photograph the cooking smoke of the Panyang River often end up dragged into a seminar by tour groups, leaving with a few bottles of "longevity water" that cost hundreds. If you really want to buy hemp or camellia oil, go to the supermarkets or farmers' markets in Bama County. Don't follow the "grandmas" at the entrance of Longevity Village who promise to "take you to see a centenarian." 6️⃣ The temperature difference inside and outside the caves is huge; your outfit will likely be wrong Baimo Cave and the Sanmenhai cave area are cool year-round; it's 32°C (90°F) outside but feels like air conditioning inside. On the Qibailong mountain tops, the wind can make it feel like it's in the teens (Celsius) in the morning and evening. If you come to Hechi in a camisole and flip-flops: you'll shiver in the caves, freeze on the mountain tops, and slip on the wet stone steps after rain. Don't believe the myth that "Guangxi is hot everywhere in September." The Hechi mountains can experience four seasons in a single day. 7️⃣ The things you want to see—"blue water/autumn mist/Hongshui River golden light/folk song festivals"—rarely align · Sanmenhai water is clearest: Stable from the dry season after October to April of the following year. September has too much rain and is prone to murkiness. · Qibailong sea of clouds: Requires the morning mist from late October to early spring. · Hongshui River First Bay sunset: Visible year-round, but prone to afternoon fog/showers in September–October. · Liu Sanjie Folk Song Festival/Xiajian River bamboo rafts: Best water in spring; in autumn, water levels drop and the river isn't as full. Visiting in September–October: The water isn't at its clearest, the mist isn't at its most magical, and Longevity Village is at its most crowded. Getting good photos is a gamble. 📅 When is the right time ✅ October 20 – Mid-November (post-holiday): Fewer rainy days, clearer river water, and autumn mist begins in Qibailong. This is the right way to experience Hechi. ✅ March–May: Xiajian River is full and green, Sanmenhai isn't stifling, fewer mosquitoes, and the folk song festivals are authentic. This is the safest bet for a first trip. ✅ December–February: Fewest crowds, caves are great for escaping the cold, and Bama is good for slow-paced wellness stays, though some mountain areas are cold. ❌ Early to mid-September: 34°C (93°F) feels like 40°C (104°F) + sudden showers. Highest chance of karst photography disappointment. ❌ October 1–7: Bama/Fengshan/Qibailong self-driving traffic surge, mountain road parking is a nightmare, and wellness tour groups take over everything. 🚨 How to save your trip if you must go in September–October · For your first visit, don't try the big loop of "Jinchengjiang + Yizhou + Bama + Fengshan + Qibailong + Donglan." Choose either "Jinchengjiang Little Three Gorges + Yizhou (1 day)" or "Bama + Fengshan (2 days)." · If visiting in September: Catch the light at Sanmenhai before 9:30 AM or after 2:30 PM. Hide in Baimo Cave/Wanshou Valley or your car between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Shoot the Panyang River after 4:00 PM. · If visiting in October, wait until after the 8th. Buy tickets for Sanmenhai/Bainiao Cave/Baimo Cave online and ignore the "fast-track boat" scalpers at the pier. · Don't attempt Qibailong on your first visit. The X906 mountain road has many curves and spotty signal. Fill up your gas tank, download offline maps, and don't drive into the mountains at night. · In Bama, don't join "free shuttle + longevity lecture" tours. Walking around Longevity Village is free; buy souvenirs at county supermarkets. · What to wear: Quick-dry long sleeves + thin jacket + non-slip sneakers + umbrella. Bring a light hoodie for the caves. Don't wear Hanfu skirts to climb stone steps. · What to eat: Yizhou jam barbecue, Hechi filter noodles, Bama fragrant pig, hemp soup, Du'an sour pickles, Huanjiang fragrant pig. Don't order the "luxury longevity banquet" and don't drink the "energy water" sold on the roadside. Hechi isn't bad, but visiting in September or October means gambling on the autumn heat, muddy water from showers, National Day traffic on mountain roads, Sanmenhai losing its blue, being pestered by salespeople in Longevity Village, and Qibailong fog discouraging you. Wait until late October when the rain stops, the Panyang River clears, the morning mist in Qibailong rolls over the thousands of mountains and valleys, and the Yizhou night market fills with the sweet scent of jam barbecue—that is when "northwest Guangxi is finally ready to slowly reveal its wildest karst landscapes to you"🏞️

Autumn is the golden window for budget travel. Airfares drop, accommodation is easier to negotiate, and the sun isn't as harsh. I've selected 8 small towns that are affordable, uncrowded, and have great scenery. I'll list them in order—just pick the ones you like and follow the plan. 01 Chenzhou | Hunan The Danxia landforms at Gaoyiling look like they were sliced by a knife; the contrast between the red rocks and green water is very photogenic. ⏰ It's recommended to go up after 4:00 PM. The light is angled, it's not too sunny, and photos won't look washed out. Admission ticket prices are subject to the daily rates posted by the scenic area; don't trust the "internal access" offers from people soliciting on the roadside. For the mist at Dongjiang Lake, you need to wake up early. Arrive at the No. 2 Bridge viewing platform by 5:00 or 6:00 AM. If you're late, the mist will clear and you'll just see crowds of people. 🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from Chenzhou West Station to Dongjiang Lake; ride-sharing is cheaper. ⚠️ Speedboat prices by the lake are inconsistent; ask clearly if the return trip is included. Mangshan Wuzhifeng is suitable for those with good stamina; it takes most of the day to complete the cable car ride and the plank road. For seniors and children, it's recommended to only walk the flat sections; don't push to do the whole thing. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, have a bowl of Qifengdu fish noodles; it's filling and costs just over 10 yuan. 02 Nyingchi | Tibet Autumn in Bomi is my personal favorite; the colorful forests on both sides of National Highway 318 start changing color in late September. ⏰ Mid-October is the peak; it's too green if you're early, and the leaves will have fallen if you're late. The water at Basum Lake is unrealistically blue, but the admission ticket plus sightseeing bus isn't cheap. If you're on a tight budget, you can stay overnight in a village by the lake and go in during the early morning free-admission period. 📍 The viewing steps at the entrance of Jieba Village are uncrowded and have a great view. Seeing Namcha Barwa at the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is a matter of luck; it's true that you might only see it once in ten tries. ⚠️ Don't rent expensive rooms with a view just to wait for the "golden mountain" sunrise; if the weather doesn't cooperate, you'll waste your money. Entering Nyingchi via the Yunnan-Tibet Highway is suitable for those with plenty of time, as the altitude fluctuates significantly along the way. If it's your first time on the plateau, spend two days in Lhasa to acclimate before setting off; don't push yourself. 03 Yulin | Shaanxi The red sandstone of Wave Valley looks like frozen waves. ⏰ The colors are most saturated before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM. Photos taken in the midday overhead light look gray, so don't waste your shutter clicks. Xianglu Temple by the Yellow River in Jia County hangs on a cliff; it's windy, so hold onto your hat. 📍 It's about a 20-minute walk from Jia County town, and you can catch the Yellow River sunset on the way. Hongshixia is north of Yulin city; the canyon isn't long and can be walked in an hour. ⚠️ Some plank roads are closed during the off-season; call ahead to check so you don't make a wasted trip. Lamb noodles in the old town of Yulin are a local breakfast staple. 🍜 A bowl with a braised egg costs less than 20 yuan. Choose accommodation near the old town; it's convenient for strolling the old streets at night, and prices are lower than in the new district. 04 Hechi | Guangxi The landscape in Donglan is typical karst terrain, and it's so uncrowded you can hear your own footsteps. ⏰ It's most photogenic the day after rain, when the mist in the mountains looks like an ink wash painting. The water at Jiudun Tianchuang (Heavenly Window) is crystal clear. You can swim in the summer, but the water starts to get chilly by the end of September; if you're sensitive to the cold, don't force it. 📍 There are no proper changing facilities near the Tianchuang, so change your clothes before you go. You need to take a boat to enter Xiangbei Shangri-La, and the boat ticket is charged separately. ⚠️ Boat trips are infrequent in the off-season and may stop running after 3:00 PM, so go early to queue. Sanli Yangdu is great for cycling; rent a bike and cruise slowly along the river—half a day is enough. 🚄 There are shuttle buses from Hechi West Station to Donglan, but they are infrequent, so check the last departure time in advance. 05 Yantai | Shandong Penglai Pavilion is famous, but in September and October, there are half as many people as during the summer vacation. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 8:00 AM to avoid tour groups. Admission tickets and cable car tickets are calculated separately; if you're fit, you don't need to take the cable car. You need to take a boat to Changdao, and the boat ticket plus transportation on the island are the main expenses. ⚠️ Sailings will be suspended when there are strong winds at sea; don't book a train that's too late for your return trip, and leave enough buffer time. Longkou Nanshan is suitable for bringing seniors; the park is large but flat, and the sightseeing bus makes it easy to get around without getting tired. 🍜 Penglai noodles are a local breakfast; a bowl costs just a few yuan, and the sauce is plentiful. Seafood in Yantai is at its fattest in September, but prices at stalls near scenic areas are inflated. Walk two streets further in, and the shops where locals eat are 30% cheaper. 06 Linfen | Shanxi Hongdong Dahuaishu (Great Locust Tree) is a place for root-seeking, and many people come here to check their genealogy. ⏰ It's less crowded in the morning, and you can hear the guided explanations clearly. Buy admission tickets according to the official posted prices; don't buy scalper packages at the entrance. The water volume at the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall is still decent in October. ⚠️ The shore is slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and don't climb over the guardrails for photos. 📍 The viewing platform on the Shanxi side offers a closer perspective than the Shaanxi side, but both sides have their own charm. Yunqiu Mountain has a group of ice caves, and you'll need to wear a jacket even in autumn. Accommodation on the mountain is expensive, so it's recommended to stay in downtown Linfen; 🚄 hotels near the high-speed railway station offer good value for money. Linfen's beef meatball noodles are a local specialty. 🍜 They are spicy and direct; if you can't handle spice, mention it in advance. Many old shops are hidden in the alleys of the old town. 07 Huangshan | Anhui The autumn colors in Xidi and Hongcun don't arrive until mid-to-late November; visiting in September is mainly for the smaller crowds and cheaper accommodation. ⏰ There are no tourists at Nanhu Lake at 6:00 AM, and the reflection is so clean it looks fake. Chengkan is quieter than Hongcun; the Bagua layout makes it easy to get lost, so 📍 follow the water channels and you won't get lost. The admission ticket includes a guided tour; following the tour is worth the price of admission. The Ancient Huizhou Culture Tourism Zone is large, so just pick one or two spots to visit; don't try to do too much. ⚠️ Joint tickets have an expiration date, so calculate the days before buying to avoid wasting money. There's a decent chance of seeing a sea of clouds in the Huangshan Scenic Area in September, but accommodation on the mountain is expensive. If you're on a tight budget, go up and down in one day; 🚄 the cable car plus hiking is enough for one day, though your legs will be sore. 08 Changji | Xinjiang The wheat fields in Jiangbulake have already been harvested in September, leaving behind golden haystacks and snow-capped mountains, which actually makes for better photos. ⏰ The evening sunset illuminates the haystacks in a warm orange color, and any photo you take will look good. The Yadan landforms in Wucaiwan are suitable for a self-driving trip. ⚠️ There is no signal in the scenic area, so download offline maps in advance and fill up your gas tank before entering. Tianshan Tianchi is close to Urumqi, and you can go there and back in one day. The admission ticket plus the shuttle bus isn't cheap; remember to bring your student ID for a discount. 📍 The Mayashan cable car offers the best view, but don't force it if you're afraid of heights. Banmian (mixed noodles) and barbecue are standard in Changji. 🍜 Small shops in the city are more honest than those at the entrance of the scenic area. The temperature difference between morning and evening in September and October is large, so you must bring a jacket; it's not strange to wear short sleeves at noon. These 8 places are all at a comfortable point to visit in September and October. If I had to choose only three, I'd pick Chenzhou, Nyingchi, and Yulin—they cost less and the scenery doesn't disappoint. Which one have you been to, or which one do you want to add? Let me know in the comments.

In September and early October before the National Day holiday, flight and hotel prices haven't skyrocketed yet. Taking two days of annual leave to bridge the weekend is much more comfortable than squeezing into the Golden Week. I've picked 8 niche cities that are uncrowded, budget-friendly, and have great scenery. Let's go through them one by one. 01 Lijiang | Yunnan Don't just stare at Sifang Street in the ancient town; the concentration of Yiwu trinkets on that street is suffocating. ⏰ Go to Black Dragon Pool Park at 7:00 AM. The light hits Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at an angle, and the reflection in the pool is as clear as a mirror. Admission is free, and it's more worth it than any paid photo spot in the ancient town. I suggest visiting Mu Palace after 3:00 PM. Most tour groups have left, so you can quietly view the three courtyards of Naxi architecture. Admission is subject to the official daily announcement; student IDs get a discount. ⚠️ The ancient town maintenance fee isn't strictly checked right now, but don't take chances. It's more embarrassing to be stopped and have to pay it. For food, avoid the bar street and head deep into Wuyi Street. You can eat your fill of cured pork rib hot pot for CNY 50 per person. For accommodation, choose an inn on the edge of the ancient town; it's 30% cheaper than the core area, and you won't wear out your suitcase wheels dragging it. You need to grab Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car tickets in advance. September is less crowded, but the main cable car is still in high demand. If you're on a tight budget, visiting Blue Moon Valley alone is enough; you don't have to go to the summit. 02 Handan | Hebei Guangfu Ancient City was an unexpected surprise for me this year. You can climb the city walls for free, and walking around the moat, you can feel the mist on your face. ⏰ Climb the city wall after 5:00 PM. The sunset turns the blue bricks a warm orange, so you don't need filters for your photos. There are many stalls selling crispy fish in the city. 📍 The old shop inside the South Gate sells them for CNY 20 each, and the bones are so crispy you can eat them. ⚠️ Don't buy from the shops directly facing the city gate; they specifically target tourists. Wahuang Palace is in She County, a 1.5-hour drive from the city center. 🚄 There are direct shuttle buses from Handan Station, but they are infrequent, so carpooling is recommended. The main building hangs on the mountainside; climbing up will make your legs shake, so seniors should assess their physical ability. It's more cost-effective to buy the admission ticket and cable car ticket together; check the official announcement for specific prices. The mountain breeze is cool in September and October, so bring a light jacket. 03 Zhangjiajie | Hunan Don't be greedy and try to cram Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain into one day; I've tried it, and my legs were ruined. For Yuanjiajie in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, ⏰ enter the park before 8:00 AM. The fog hasn't cleared yet, and the stone pillars of the Hallelujah Mountains emerging from the clouds are worth the price of admission. The queue for the Tianmen Mountain glass skywalk can make you question your life choices. ⚠️ I recommend buying an afternoon ticket; it's half as crowded. The one-way cable car ride takes half an hour; if you're afraid of heights, close your eyes. For food, "Sanxiaguo" (three-pot dish) in the city center is CNY 40 per person. Don't eat in the scenic area; a bowl of noodles can cost you CNY 35. Stay near the Wulingyuan Landmark Gate to make entering the park easier the next day. The admission ticket is valid for 4 days; planning reasonably can save you the cost of one cable car ride. September and October have less rain and high visibility, making it a comfortable window for the whole year. 04 Karamay | Xinjiang Urho Ghost City sounds intimidating, but it's actually a Yadan landform. ⏰ Go in an hour before sunset. The wind makes the mounds howl, and the shadows stretch out long. Photos can't capture that sense of desolation. 📍 There is a sightseeing train in the scenic area included in the admission ticket. Don't spend extra money on an off-road vehicle; the route is about the same. ⚠️ This place is over 100 km from the city center. Without a car, it's basically impossible to get around, so rent a car or join a one-day tour. September is sunny during the day and cold at night, so you must bring a jacket. Accommodation in the nearby Urho Town is cheap; you can find a clean place for over CNY 100. A meal of Dapanji (big plate chicken) is CNY 50 per person, and the portion is enough for two. Budget travelers can return to Karamay city center the same day to save on a night's accommodation. 05 Hechi | Guangxi The landscapes of Donglan and the Jiudun Sky Windows are the kind of places that aren't famous but have ridiculously clear water. ⏰ Arrive at Jiudun Sky Windows before 10:00 AM. Sunlight shines directly to the bottom of the water, and you can see grass that looks like an underwater forest. You need to take a boat to enter the Xiangbei Shangri-La. The boat ticket isn't expensive, but ⚠️ during the dry season, the water level is low, and some sections of the river are impassable, so call and ask before you go. Sanli Yangdu is suitable for cycling; rent a bicycle and cruise slowly along the river, and an afternoon will just fly by. Public transportation in this area is weak, so self-driving is recommended. Stay in Donglan County; a standard room is a little over CNY 100. Eat a bowl of local rice noodles for CNY 8, and add your own toppings. September and October are neither cold nor hot, making it the most comfortable time in Hechi, just don't get caught in the rain, as the mountain roads are slippery. 06 Changzhou | Jiangsu Tianmu Lake, Spring and Autumn Yancheng, and China Dinosaur Park are in three different directions; pick at most two for one day. Dinosaur Park is suitable for kids, and the admission ticket isn't cheap. ⚠️ Buying online in advance is dozens of yuan cheaper than on-site. For the Spring and Autumn Yancheng Ruins Park, ⏰ the light is soft after 4:00 PM, making it great for photographing the city walls and the moat, and it's less crowded. Tianmu Lake's fish head soup is famous, but it costs over CNY 200 in the scenic area. 📍 Go to Liyang city center to eat it for half the price. The Changzhou Metro goes to Dinosaur Park, and 🚄 transferring from the high-speed railway station is convenient. Staying in the city center is cheaper than staying in the scenic area, and it's only about a 20-minute taxi ride away. If you're on a tight budget, choose Tianmu Lake and Yancheng; save Dinosaur Park for a future trip with kids. 07 Anshan | Liaoning Qianshan is the most underrated destination on this list. ⏰ Enter from the main gate at 6:30 AM. Local seniors are already hiking, and the air is refreshingly cool. Wuliang Temple and Longquan Temple are two different routes. If your stamina is average, take the Wuliang Temple route; the steps are gentler. ⚠️ Don't trust the "free admission paths" touted by touts at the entrance; they are a detour and dangerous. Check the official announcement for peak season admission prices; students get half off. There are vendors selling water and cucumbers on the mountain, but the prices are doubled, so carry enough yourself. A taxi from Anshan Station to Qianshan is about CNY 30, and there are also direct buses. In September and October, the red leaves aren't fully red yet, but it's uncrowded, so you don't have to wait for photo spots. Have a barbecue after coming down the mountain for CNY 40 per person; the portions in Northeast China are generous. 08 Changzhi | Shanxi Huguan Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon and Baquan Gorge are rare water landscapes in Shanxi. Take a boat into Baquan Gorge; ⏰ the light comes in during the morning, the water is green, and the cliffs on both sides loom over you, with cool air hitting your face. The Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon is vast, and Hongdou Gorge and Qinglong Gorge have separate entrances. ⚠️ Don't buy the wrong ticket; check clearly which gorges are included. The cable car and elevator cost extra; if you have good stamina, you can walk the plank road to save money. It's about a 1-hour drive from Changzhi city center to Huguan; self-driving or carpooling is recommended. Stay in Huguan County; you can find a nice place for CNY 100. Eat a bowl of knife-cut noodles for CNY 10 to fill up. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is large in September and October, so bring a windbreaker. This route is suitable for people who like to walk; seniors and children should choose the flatter sections according to their ability. Of these eight places, I most recommend Hechi and Changzhi—one has clear water and the other has cool mountains, and neither costs much. Pick one and set off before the October crowds arrive.

8 spontaneous cities for National Day: fewer crowds, save money, and no time off needed 01 Hechi | Guangxi Hechi is my secret answer for avoiding the National Day crowds. No long lines for viral photo spots here, just karst landscapes and underground rivers. First stop: Donglan landscapes. The viewing platform at the first bend of the Hongshui River is best in the morning mist. ⏰ Arrive before 8:00 AM; the light cuts across the river, making every shot look like a screensaver. Jiudun Sky Window is a classic spot for the diving community; the water is so clear you can see your own fins. If you don't dive, watching others jump in is also quite relaxing. In the afternoon, head to Xiangbei Fairyland; drift slowly on a bamboo raft past sugarcane fields and old waterwheels. Sanli Yangdu is perfect for wrapping up; the whole river glows gold at sunset. ⚠️ Hechi attractions are spread out, so driving yourself is best. If you don't drive, hire a car; don't count on public transport to connect them. 02 Ma'anshan | Anhui Sandwiched between Nanjing and Wuhu, Ma'anshan doesn't get much attention, but Caishiji is worth a special trip. The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural Eco-Tourism Zone is right by the river, with boardwalks hugging the cliffs and the rushing river below. ⏰ The light is softest after 5:00 PM, and the river surface looks like it's covered in copper. Li Bai drank and wrote poetry here; Taibai Tower and the Moon-Catching Platform were built by later generations to commemorate him. Standing on the cliff edge feeling the river breeze, you really get a sense of "raising a cup to invite the moon." 📍 Enter through the North Gate and exit through the East Gate; you can hit Sanyuan Cave and Emei Pavilion along the way. The whole route takes 2–3 hours. 🍜 Head down the mountain to Jiefang Road for a bowl of Dangtu meat noodles; the fatty meat is stewed until transparent, and it tastes especially good with the river breeze. ⚠️ It's windy by the river during holidays, so bring a light jacket; don't just wear short sleeves. 03 Chengde | Hebei Chengde is a niche option for escaping the heat during National Day. With the Summer Resort and the Outer Eight Temples, you can't finish exploring in a single day. The lake and mountain areas of the resort are very different. ⏰ Visit the lake area in the morning; Yanyu Tower and Rehe Spring are quiet and uncrowded. In the afternoon, take the mountain shuttle to Er'madao for a panoramic view of the Little Potala Palace. Jinshanling Great Wall is about a 1.5-hour drive from the city center and is much less crowded than Badaling. 📍 Start at Zhuoduokou and end at Shalingkou; this section of the wall has beautiful undulations, so you won't have to fight for photo spots. 🍜 After coming down, find a farmhouse restaurant for stewed chicken with mushrooms and corn cakes dipped in the broth; it replenishes the energy you spent hiking. ⚠️ The Jinshanling cable car stops running at 4:30 PM. If you want to take it, go early; don't cut it close. 04 Jiuquan | Gansu Jiuquan is a treasure of the Hexi Corridor, combining deserts, grottoes, and Yadan landforms. Visiting during National Day is perfect for avoiding the summer heat. For Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, go early or late. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 6:30 AM and climb the sand ridge to watch the sunrise; Crescent Lake slowly lights up beneath your feet. The sand is scorching at noon, so don't push it. You must book the Mogao Grottoes in advance; regular tickets allow you to see 8 caves, while emergency tickets only allow 4. ⚠️ Photography is prohibited inside the caves, and don't shine flashlights around; protecting the murals is the bottom line. Yadan National Geological Park is best in the evening; the wind-eroded rocks are dyed golden-red by the sunset, and the "West Sea Fleet" area is the most spectacular. Yumenguan is not far from Yadan; stop by the Small Square City on the way. 🚄 A taxi from Dunhuang Station to the city center is about CNY 20. For Yadan, it's recommended to hire a car or join a one-day tour. 05 Golo | Qinghai Golo is one of the highest altitude places in Qinghai, and the First Bend of the Yellow River is located in Madoi County. It hasn't been overdeveloped; the grasslands, wetlands, and distant mountains are all pristine. ⏰ The grass is greenest from July to September. By National Day, it's already turning yellow, but that vast, desolate feeling is even more moving. 📍 The viewing platform for the First Bend of the Yellow River is by the county road. It takes about 20 minutes to climb up, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⚠️ At an altitude of over 4,300 meters, altitude sickness is no joke. Take Rhodiola in advance, don't run or jump when you arrive, and don't shower on the first night. 🍜 There aren't many restaurants in Madoi County; yak yogurt and tsampa are standard. If you can't get used to them, bring your own food. This is clearly for: experienced drivers, photography enthusiasts, and those who want total peace and quiet. Seniors and children should be cautious. 06 Linyi | Shandong Linyi isn't just about Yimeng Mountain; the Underground Grand Canyon and Firefly Water Cave are hidden gems. In the Firefly Water Cave & Underground Grand Canyon Tourist Area, you can go dark river rafting and see the firefly cave. You take a boat into pitch-black darkness, and the ceiling is dotted with firefly light. ⚠️ Flash photography is prohibited in the cave; don't aim your camera at the fireflies. For Yimeng Mountain, I recommend the Guimeng Scenic Area. The boardwalk is built along the cliff; your legs might feel weak, but the scenery is worth the price of admission. ⏰ There's a high chance of seeing a sea of clouds after rain; if you want to see it, don't be afraid of getting your shoes wet. 🍜 Shen soup is the soul of breakfast in the city; beef Shen with fried dough sticks—a bowl will warm you right up. 📍 The old-fashioned shops on Lanshan Road only sell it until 10:00 AM. 🚄 A taxi from Linyi North Station to Yimeng Mountain takes about an hour. For the Underground Grand Canyon, it's recommended to drive yourself or carpool. 07 Zhangjiajie | Hunan Zhangjiajie will definitely be crowded during National Day, but Wulingyuan is large enough that you can still avoid tour groups if you head deeper. The ticket for Wulingyuan Scenic Area is valid for 4 days, so don't try to finish it in one day. ⏰ Enter from the Flagpole Gate before 7:00 AM and take the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie; you can see the Southern Sky Column half an hour before the main crowds. Tianmen Mountain is worth a separate day; the glass skywalk and the 999-step ladder are standard. ⚠️ The queue for the Tianmen Mountain cable car is insane; buying an A-line ticket to go up the mountain from the city cable car station is the easiest way. Golden Whip Stream in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is perfect for a slow walk. The stream is clear, and the monkeys will snatch plastic bags, so ⚠️ don't hold food in your hands. 🍜 "Sanxiaguo" (three-pot stew) is a local specialty; pork intestine, walnut meat, and radish are stewed in one pot. It goes great with rice, and you can easily eat two bowls. 08 Linfen | Shanxi Linfen is an underrated stop in Shanxi. With Hukou Waterfall and Yunqiu Mountain, the water volume is just right during National Day. The Yellow River Hukou Waterfall Tourist Area is in Ji County. During National Day, the water flow is heavy, and you can go down to the bottom of the waterfall at Longdong to look up. ⏰ Arrive before 10:00 AM; there's less backlighting, and a higher chance of seeing a rainbow. The Hongtong Ancestral Hall is great for taking elders; the history of immigration and family genealogy is very detailed. ⚠️ The park's guided tours cost extra; ask about the price in advance if you want to listen. Yunqiu Mountain has ice caves that freeze in summer and don't melt in winter; you need to wear a cotton coat to go inside. 📍 Talpo Ancient Village is at the foot of the mountain; the stone houses and persimmon racks are great for photos. 🍜 Linfen beef meatball noodles are the top choice for a late-night snack; they're spicy and direct, and the meatballs are bouncy. Of these 8 cities, the ones I most want to revisit are Hechi and Golo. One has water so clear it's unbelievable, and the other is so empty there's nothing left but the sound of the wind. Where are you planning to go for National Day? Let's chat in the comments, and I'll help you see if your route makes sense.

Driving around National Day, the two things people fear most are getting stuck on the road and getting stuck at attraction entrances. I picked these 8 spots because they either have enough space to disperse crowds or are underrated — perfect for a September–October visit. 01 Hechi | Guangxi The highlight of this route is the Donglan scenery. The first bend of the Hongshui River has steady water levels in autumn, with morning mist hanging on the hillsides like someone pouring milk into the valley. ⏰ Arrive at the viewing platform before 7:00 AM. If you come later, the fog will be gone and the light will be harsh. The Jiudun skylights are best in the afternoon. The water is so clear you can see rocks more than 10 meters down, but don’t plan to get in—the water is painfully cold. 📍 Villagers collect parking fees at the entrance to the skylight cluster. Ask about the price before you park. Xiangbei Shiwai Taoyuan and Sanliyangdu can be done on the same day. Xiangbei is more pastoral, Sanliyangdu is a karst peak forest, and the drive itself is scenic. ⚠️ Country roads are narrow. Find a wide spot to pass and don’t force your way through. For food and lodging, stay in Yizhou or Donglan county town. 🍜 In the evening find a noodle shop that cooks the local rice noodles and order them with fresh ingredients and pickled bamboo shoots—cheap and filling. This route is for people with plenty of time who prefer to avoid crowds. 02 Changde | Hunan Taohuayuan scenic area sounds like something from a textbook, but it’s more pleasant to explore than you might think. The core experience is a Qinxi boat ride followed by a walk in Qin Valley; water levels are good in autumn and the rice fields along the banks are just turning yellow. ⏰ Go in the morning: take the boat first, then walk. Boat tickets and admission are separate, so check official channels for combo tickets in advance for a better deal. ⚠️ Don’t trust touts at the entrance offering “skip the line”; the official entrance is at the tourist center. Food inside the park is pricey. I usually go to the city afterward for Changde rice noodles—add beef bits and a tiger-skin egg, and you’re set for about ¥20. For parking, use lots on the outskirts; spaces inside are limited. This route is good for taking parents along—mostly flat walking, not tiring for elders. Late September to mid‑October is when the rice fields look best. 03 Taizhou | Zhejiang I recommend splitting Taizhou into two days; don’t try to cram too much. Tiantai Mountain and Shenxianju are both hikes—doing both in one day will wear out your legs. Tiantai Mountain is known for the Shiliang waterfall and Guoqing Temple. ⏰ Guoqing Temple is quiet in the morning. The plum blossoms aren’t in season yet, but the peace inside the temple is worth the trip. ⚠️ Water flow at the waterfall depends on the weather; don’t expect much after long dry spells. Taizhou old city cultural area is best in the evening. 📍 Ziyang Street is great for eating along the way—egg-white lamb tail, seaweed cakes, black rice mochi; stroll and snack. Walk the city wall for wind and a view of the old rooftops. Leave one day for Shenxianju. Nantian Peak and Ruyi Bridge are the photo spots, but lines can be long. 🚄 Park at the visitor center and take the shuttle into the park. This is for people with good fitness who love photos; older visitors should stick to the lower loop. It gets cool on the mountain in October mornings and evenings, so bring a jacket. 04 Heyuan | Guangdong Wanlv Lake is Guangdong’s own “big water tank.” Water levels are high in September–October and the lake glows green; taking a boat between islands is ten times better than viewing from shore. ⏰ Catch the first boat for fewer people and cool breezes. Boat tickets come in different routes; choose the Jinghuayuan line—the island has a small beach where kids can play. ⚠️ Don’t buy “private boat tickets” sold at the pier—there’s no guarantee. Driving part of the lakeside road is worth it. 📍 From Xingang Town toward Xichang Town there are several viewing platforms with convenient parking for photos. 🍜 Have a whole-fish lunch in Xingang Town—fish head soup and steamed clawfish priced by weight, so ask the price first. Suitable for families and for people who want to relax. Lakeside homestays are much cheaper on weekdays than weekends, so you can save a lot. 05 Xuzhou | Jiangsu Yunlong Lake is Xuzhou’s free big park, but don’t underestimate it. The lake is even larger than Hangzhou’s West Lake, and autumn is the most pleasant time for cycling around the shore. ⏰ Go after 4:00 PM, when the light slants and the plane trees on East Lake Road start to change color. 📍 Rent a shared bike and ride from Binhu Park to Su Causeway—one loop takes a little over an hour. ⚠️ Parking near the lake is tight on weekends. Go early or park farther away and walk in. Yunlong Lake is next to Yunlong Mountain; a short climb gives you a lake view. The mountain isn’t high—about a half hour to the top—so it’s suitable for kids. 🍜 After the hike, go to Hubu Hill for braised pork slices with a bowl of spicy soup—this is a typical Xuzhou dinner. This route is ideal for a short weekend trip; high-speed rail plus a rental car works well. It’s windy by the lake in October, so bring a light jacket. 06 Chizhou | Anhui Mount Jiuhua is at its most comfortable in September–October. It’s still hot down below, but cool on the mountain, and the odds of a sea of clouds are higher than in summer. ⏰ To see the sea of clouds, stay on the mountain and wake up at 5:30 AM to head to Tiantai or Huatai. ⚠️ Cable car lines can take an hour on weekends and holidays, so visit midweek if possible. Tickets and cable car tickets are sold separately; reserve on the official WeChat account. You can only park at the base and take the shuttle up the mountain. 📍 Jiuhuajie is the main area for lodging, with many temples; try a vegetarian meal at least once. 🍜 Stone ear mushroom scrambled eggs and braised pork with dried bamboo shoots are local mountain flavors. This is good for slow walkers and for a simple cool escape. Older visitors should take the gentle Baishou Palace route and avoid rushing to Tiantai. In October, temperatures on the mountain can drop below 10°C in the morning and evening, so a down jacket is not an exaggeration. 07 Weifang | Shandong Qingzhou ancient city tourism area is one of Weifang’s most underrated stops. The old town doesn’t charge an entrance fee, so you can wander freely—very considerate. 📍 Ouyuan Street and Beimen Avenue are the main streets. Before 8:00 AM there are almost no people, great for photos. ⏰ At dusk, when the lanterns light up, the atmosphere changes completely. ⚠️ Some “specialty shops” on the street mark up prices—compare at least two shops before buying. The new Qingzhou Museum is worth a visit; the grotto-stored Buddha statues from Longxing Temple are the museum’s treasures. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays; book ahead. 🍜 For lunch find a long-established shop for Longsheng pastries with mísandao, and try a bowl of qiu cake. Park in lots outside the ancient city—there are traffic limits inside. Suitable for a day trip and for older visitors—the streets are flat and easy to walk. October has crisp autumn air and you can stroll all day without getting tired. 08 Haibei | Qinghai The Qilian Mountains are on their last good window in September–October. The grasslands turn from green to yellow and the snow starts to cap the peaks, creating richer layers of color than in summer. The Heihe Grand Canyon and Lenglong Ridge are good for a self-drive crossing. 🚄 Rent a car in Xining and take National Highway 227—the whole route is scenic. ⚠️ Some sections exceed 3,500 m in elevation. Avoid strenuous activity and have an oxygen canister ready. After October, snow may close the roads, so check conditions before you go. Amidongsuo is in Qilian County, a mix of Danxia landforms and grassland. ⏰ The red layers look best in the afternoon light. 📍 The park has viewing platforms with convenient parking. 🍜 In Qilian County town, try hand‑pulled mutton and yak yogurt to warm up and help with altitude. This route suits experienced highland travelers who love wild landscapes. Careful with elderly people and children—the altitude is a hard limit. Expect a 20°C temperature swing between morning and evening; a shell jacket plus fleece is the standard setup. Of these 8 places, I most want a second visit to Heyuan and Chizhou. One is for relaxing, the other for climbing. Which direction are you planning to drive in September–October? Tell me in the comments and I’ll help check your route.

The lake water is crystal clear with Ottelia alismoides swaying at the bottom. The mountains are quiet and secluded, far from the city's hustle and bustle. We recommend local chicken, river fish, and stir-fried wild vegetables with cured meat. Average cost: CNY 50–70 per person. Day 2: Morning stroll, nearby sightseeing, and departure The lake is calm and less crowded in the early morning, creating a great atmosphere. After finishing, stop by Tunbang Tianchuang on your way back. Return to the county seat at noon for Du'an fresh-pressed rice noodles and duck blood with vinegar, then head home. 🍜Dining ✅Breakfast: Porridge, noodles, and grains at the homestay. Average cost: CNY 12 per person. ✅Main meals: Farmhouse chicken, steamed river fish, stir-fried wild vegetables with cured meat; fresh-pressed rice noodles and duck blood with vinegar in the county seat. Average cost: CNY 40–60 per person. ⚠️There are few shops in the mountains, so prepare water and snacks in advance. 💡Tips 1. The lake water is bluest during the high water season. It may be murky after heavy rain, so visiting then is not recommended. 2. There are many mosquitoes by the lake, so bring mosquito repellent. Wear non-slip shoes. 3. This is a deep natural pool. You must wear a life jacket when playing in the water and keep a close eye on children.

Where to go on a budget in Sept–Oct? 8 low‑cost small towns tested so you won't be disappointed 1️⃣ Hechi | Guangxi September in Hechi just loses the summer heat, and the Hongshui River looks brilliantly green after the rain. ⏰ Depart from Donglan county at 7:00 AM, the mist hasn't cleared and the mountains and water look like they're painted in light ink. 📍 The water at Jiudun skylight is so clear you can count the stones, but don't rush to swim—the water in the rock crevices is bone‑chilling in October, so just take photos from the shore. Xiangbei Secluded Paradise is best in the afternoon, when slanted light filters through the bamboo and the bamboo rafts drift slowly. 🚄 From Hechi West station take a shuttle to Yizhou, then change to a bus into the scenic area—under CNY 30 total. At Sanliyang Ferry I recommend renting a bike and riding along the river for a while; it's more freedom than taking a boat. ⚠️ Don't eat the so‑called river seafood set at the scenic area entrance. Walk 500 meters into town and the price is cut in half. Best for students and those not in a hurry. Staying in Yizhou city center is the most convenient. 2️⃣ Wuxi | Jiangsu Wuxi's autumn is all about osmanthus. By late September the whole city smells sweet. I suggest entering Nianhuawan after 5:00 PM—it's crowded like a market during the day, but when the lights come on in the evening it feels more serene. The CCTV Wuxi film studio has sets from Three Kingdoms and Water Margin. It's not cheap, but if you have kids, the equestrian show at the Water Margin city is worth the ticket. 📍 At Huishan ancient town, don't just walk the main street—turn into the alleys to find quiet old residences. 🍜 In the morning find an old shop for wontons with dried shrimp, just over CNY 10, much better than what the scenic areas offer. ⚠️ The elevator at Lingshan Grand Buddha costs extra. If you're able, walk up—the steps aren't that steep. Wuxi Metro reaches most attractions. Staying near Sanyang Plaza makes getting around easy. If the osmanthus is past bloom in October the scent fades, so time your visit carefully if you want to see the flowers. 3️⃣ Huzhou | Zhejiang For Huzhou I only recommend one place: Nanxun Ancient Town. After schools start in September visitors drop by half, and the riverside stone paths can finally be walked at leisure. ⏰ Try to enter the town after 3:00 PM; tour groups have mostly left and the light is softer. 📍 The riverside promenade by Baijianlou is a great photo spot—go before 7:00 AM and the water is as flat as a mirror. 🍜 Try shuang‑yao noodles with crispy pork and fried fish, about CNY 15; locals eat it for breakfast. ⚠️ Don't buy combo tickets that include small eateries. Just buy the town admission—you won't have time to visit most of those places. Take the high‑speed rail to Nanxun station and taxi 10–15 minutes to the scenic area. Staying in guesthouses outside the town is much cheaper than inside. Mornings and evenings in October are cool—bring a light jacket, the riverside wind is sharp. 4️⃣ Yanbian | Jilin By late September Yanbian is already showing autumn colors. The woods at Liuding Mountain turn yellow earlier than elsewhere. ⏰ Arrive around 9:00 AM for the best light; the golden summit shines in the sun. 📍 Spend about three hours at Liuding Mountain cultural tourism area. The mountain isn't high but there are many steps—wear comfortable shoes. 🚄 It's around CNY 20 by taxi from Dunhua station. There is a bus, but it's infrequent—take a taxi if you're on a schedule. 🍜 After descending, find a Korean‑style restaurant for cold noodles and barbecue—CNY 40–50 per person gets you a very filling meal. ⚠️ It gets windy on the mountain in October—bring a hat and scarf. Don't be like me and go up in just a thin sweatshirt. Good for bringing parents—the pace is slow and walking isn't tiring. To save money stay in Dunhua city; chain hotels are just over CNY 100, much more economical than the area around the scenic spot. 5️⃣ Yantai | Shandong October in Yantai is all about seafood and cool sea breezes. Penglai Pavilion is worth a visit, but avoid weekends. ⏰ Enter the scenic area before 8:00 AM to avoid tour buses. 📍 Check the weather before booking the ferry from Penglai to Changdao—if it's windy the boats cancel. Staying one night on Changdao is the right way to go; fisherman homestays for a little over CNY 100 including meals and lodging are cheaper than a same‑day round trip. Longkou Nanshan is best by car—the area is large and you'll be wiped out if you try to walk it all day. 🍜 Look for Yantai menzi and hairtail fish dumplings in small old‑town shops; the offerings in scenic areas tend to be overpriced and mediocre. ⚠️ The temperature difference between morning and evening at the coast is big in October. You can wear short sleeves at noon, but you'll need a jacket by dusk. Take the high‑speed rail to Yantai station; there are buses to Penglai that take just over an hour. For budget travel stay in Zhifu district—both food and lodging are cheaper. 6️⃣ Suizhou | Hubei Suizhou is underrated. Dahong Mountain's red leaves just start in October, and it's so uncrowded you might think you took a wrong turn. ⏰ Enter the mountain in the morning; after 3:00 PM fog often rolls in and visibility drops. 📍 Climbing to Dahong Mountain's main peak takes about two hours. If you're not very fit take the cable car—one way is CNY 50. The temple on the mountain serves vegetarian meals for CNY 10 that are surprisingly tasty and filling. 🚄 There's a tourist shuttle from Suizhou station to Dahong Mountain, but buses are infrequent—it's best to carpool with a few people. ⚠️ Signal is weak in the mountains. Download offline maps in advance—don't rely on live navigation. Good for travelers who like quiet. In October stay at a farmhouse B&B at the mountain foot for under CNY 100 a night. To see red leaves wait until mid to late October; go too early and they're still green. 7️⃣ Qiandongnan | Guizhou In Sept–Oct Qiandongnan's terraces turn golden and the glutinous rice in the villages is newly harvested. Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is famous, but I prefer Zhaoxing Dong Village—it's quieter, and elders by the drum tower will chat with you. ⏰ Visit Xijiang's viewing platform at dusk—the lights coming on are truly beautiful, though the daytime commercial street isn't worth much browsing. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is good for an overnight stay; riverside guesthouses along the Wuyang River are just over CNY 100 and it's pleasant to stroll by the river at night. 🍜 For sour soup fish, avoid the main tourist street—head into the alleys and pick the place locals frequent, you won't go wrong. ⚠️ Xianghuo Rock has low water flow in October and the waterfall lacks wow factor. Skip it if you're only going for the water scenery. Take high‑speed rail to Kaili South and transfer to buses to the villages. Shuttle buses are cheap but slow—if you're short on time carpool. Mornings and evenings in October are cool—bring a fleece. 8️⃣ Dongguan | Guangdong October in Dongguan is finally less stuffy. Humen Bridge is worth a special trip. ⏰ Go around 5:00 PM—when the sun sets on the bridge towers the river turns a golden red; it's ten times more beautiful than in daylight. 📍 Weiyuan Fort is right by the bridge, free to visit, so it's easy to see both. 🚄 From Humen station a taxi is about CNY 20. You can get there by bus too, but it's a longer route. 🍜 After seeing the bridge head to Humen town center for roast goose with lai fun—about CNY 20 a bowl, crispy skin and tender meat, more honest than many trendy shops. ⚠️ You can't stop on the bridge to take photos—don't try to drive onto it to wander. Find a proper viewpoint. Good for travelers on a tight budget who still want to see the sea. Staying in a chain hotel in Humen town is just over CNY 100. October is the tail end of typhoon season—check the weather before you go. Of these eight places, I most recommend Hechi and Qiandongnan—the autumn colors and prices are both great. Pick one and head out in October, it's the perfect time.
