That descent is the part nobody blogs about. From Brockenhaus it is 14 km to the Ecker Dam, 4h30 of rolling ridge (Goetheweg markers), dropping through stunted pine and peat gullies. At the dam itself there is a second Cold War relic: the former East-German border listening post on the saddle above the western abutment, now a small info panel with barbed-wire stumps. The dam is a curved masonry wall, 65 m high, and the Ecker river below runs into the Stausee—good place to eat the Bratwurst from the Brocken snack bar (€3.80) before the last bus. Transport back: bus 264 from Ecker Dam stop to Bad Harzburg, €4.20, last departure 17:42 in summer. I miscalculated and missed it by six minutes, then hitchhiked with a guy in a Trabant—not a plan, just luck.
