Foshan is great but I won’t come back because honestly…
Foshan is great, but I won’t go again 😭 Just got back! Here’s my heartfelt honest review
To be honest! Foshan is definitely an underrated gem in Lingnan!
Full of local life and rich cultural heritage, with century-old arcade buildings full of charm, strong vibes of intangible cultural heritage like lion dance and pottery culture, Shunde cuisine is legendary, prices are affordable, the pace is relaxed, and every photo has a gentle Lingnan filter. Just wandering around is very soothing ✨
But honestly, I won’t come back a second time easily!
It’s not that Foshan is bad, but this trip had too many pitfalls! The hot and sticky weather, overused influencer traps, frustrating food lines, and repetitive commercialized attractions made the whole trip exhausting and stifling! I just finished compiling a detailed guide to avoid all the traps. If you’re heading to Foshan, just copy this and avoid all the pitfalls!
🌧️ First warning! The southern humidity is unbearable
If you haven’t been to Foshan, don’t be fooled by the beautiful photos online!
Foshan from June to September is really not suitable for travel!
There’s no dry summer, only an immersive sauna experience! Temperatures start at 35℃, humidity maxes out at 90%, stepping out of air conditioning hits you with a heat wave, your whole body feels sticky, and clothes cling tightly—super uncomfortable.
The worst is the random thunderstorms!
The weather is unpredictable, one moment blazing sun, the next pouring rain with no warning. Carrying an umbrella is a must. Without one, you’ll get soaked anytime. After rain, the ground is flooded and the cobblestone paths are extremely slippery, so you have to walk carefully and can’t relax while sightseeing.
It’s also super stuffy and muggy—even on cloudy days there’s no breeze. After walking for half an hour, you’ll be drenched in sweat, makeup ruined, hair greasy and flat, photos all off, and you’ll feel physically and mentally drained after a day with no chance to unwind!
❌ Honest review of attractions | They’re beautiful but full of traps
1. Zumiao temple | The lion dance is amazing, but there are many traps
A must-visit landmark in Foshan, the intangible cultural heritage atmosphere is fully immersive! The Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and Ip Man Hall showcase martial arts heritage. The scheduled lion dance performance is really worth watching—fluid, passionate, and thrilling. It’s the highlight of the whole trip!
💣 Pitfall warnings
1. The lion dance has fixed showtimes! Don’t wait around randomly
Shows are limited daily, mostly at 10 AM and some in the afternoon. Arrive 10 minutes early to secure a spot! If you’re late, you’ll be stuck at the back and won’t see the performance clearly.
2. Beware of cheap unofficial guides and free tours at the entrance—they’re all traps
They lure you in with low prices, then aggressively push paid services and souvenirs. If you don’t buy, they get rude. Don’t engage! If you want to learn history, rent the official audio guide—safe and reliable.
3. Never come on weekends or holidays! It’s packed with people, photos are full of strangers, and the experience is ruined.
2. Lingnan Tiandi | Great for photos but heavily commercialized
With century-old arcade buildings and wok-ear houses, the blend of old and new is very charming. It’s vintage and gentle by day, and full of atmosphere with lights at night. Perfect for photo ops and free to explore!
💣 Pitfall tips
1. Don’t randomly sign up for influencer-style intangible cultural heritage experiences
Pottery and lion dance workshops are overpriced, with superficial teaching and low value—just a tourist trap.
2. Be cautious of trendy coffee shops and bars in alleys
Many influencer spots are dirty, even smelly, with average drinks and inflated prices—not worth visiting.
3. Fruit plates and drinks in the area are double the usual price. Always check the menu carefully to avoid hidden charges.
3. Qinghui garden | A beautiful Lingnan garden, best visited during off-peak times
One of Guangdong’s four famous gardens, truly deserving the title! Pavilions, bridges, flowing water, rockeries, and koi create picturesque scenes at every turn. After 4 PM, the light softens, making photos gentle and beautiful!
💣 Pitfall tips
1. Avoid weekends! It’s so crowded you can’t move, photos are full of people, and you can’t capture the garden’s tranquility. Prioritize weekdays.
2. Don’t buy souvenirs like fans or trinkets from street vendors at the entrance—they’re poorly made and overpriced.
3. The garden has lots of mosquitoes! The hot and humid weather brings swarms, so bring mosquito repellent.
4. Fengjian water town | The real experience doesn’t match the online photos
Online it looks like a gentle Jiangnan water town, but in reality, it’s a commercialized ordinary village!
The river is short, scenery is repetitive, and both sides are filled with the same snack shops. It lacks the rustic, peaceful vibe. The so-called authentic local atmosphere is now mostly influencer stalls with no real character.
💣 Absolute no-go
1. Don’t take unlicensed tricycles by the roadside! They overcharge, take detours, and force you to buy boat tours.
2. If you want to take a boat, go to the official dock for transparent and safe pricing. Private boats are expensive and unreliable.
3. No need to make a special trip here—just stop by if you’re nearby. The value is low.
5. Xiqiao mountain | Stunning scenery but very tiring
The natural scenery is amazing, with green mountains, clear water, and fresh air. The summit offers a healing panoramic view, perfect for those who enjoy hiking and nature!
💣 Pitfall tips
1. Go early! Enter before 8 AM to avoid tour groups and midday heat. Going late means heat and crowds.
2. The park is huge with lots of walking and stairs. Don’t wear heels or new shoes. Expect to walk at least 15,000 steps a day. Comfortable sneakers are essential.
3. There are many mosquitoes and temperature differences on the mountain. Bring mosquito repellent and a light jacket.
🍜 Shunde cuisine | Delicious but full of traps! Don’t blindly follow trends
It’s said food is king in Guangzhou and chefs come from Foshan’s Shunde district. Shunde cuisine is famous, but the reality is long lines, high prices, and overly sweet dishes!
✅ Authentic must-try dishes
Double-skin milk custard, fried milk, Cantonese dim sum, roast goose, fish skin, and pork offal congee from authentic old shops are truly legendary—fresh, sweet but not greasy, and excellent texture.
❌ Must-avoid food traps
1. Influencer-famous old shops have crazy lines
Places like Pork Lady and Fishy Smell have 1–2 hour waits during meal times. The value is average, portions are large but overpriced, and it’s not worth the hassle.
2. Desserts in tourist areas are overly sweet
Double-skin milk and sweet soups in scenic spots are cloying, with weak milk flavor and watery texture—far from authentic local taste.
3. Don’t buy souvenirs in tourist areas! Mystery ginger candy and gifts are double the price and average quality. Big supermarkets are better deals.
💡 How to eat right
Avoid tourist areas! Head straight to Huagai Road old street or local neighborhoods for affordable, authentic food with no lines. These local favorites won’t disappoint.
🏨 Accommodation tips | Don’t book blindly! Price differences mean very different experiences
❌ Not recommended: influencer-favorite guesthouses in commercial areas
Some guesthouses in old city areas have outdated facilities, poor soundproofing, heavy damp smells, and mold during the rainy season. The stay is unpleasant and overpriced.
✅ The two best areas to stay
1. Zumiao/Lingnan Tiandi area
Central city location within walking distance of major attractions, convenient transport, many hotel options, ideal for short trips.
2. Shunde Daliang area
Foodie’s top choice! Close to Qinghui garden and Huagai Road, surrounded by authentic food, great value.
3. Qiandeng Lake area
Clean and quiet environment, mostly upscale hotels, direct metro to Guangzhou, perfect for those seeking comfort.
🚗 Transportation & general tips
1. Foshan’s attractions are spread out, traveling across areas is tiring. Don’t try to visit multiple spots in one day. Take it easy for a better experience.
2. Avoid cheap roadside day tours and pushy sales—they’re all hidden cost traps.
3. Summer essentials: umbrella, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, wet wipes to handle sun, rain, and sticky weather.
4. All water buses and sightseeing buses have fixed operating hours. Don’t arrive right at closing time or you’ll waste your trip.
✍️ Final honest thoughts
Foshan is truly a gentle city!
It has a thousand years of Lingnan culture, endless authentic food, heartwarming local life, a blend of rustic and modern, gentle and relaxed. It’s definitely worth everyone’s visit to experience Lingnan style once.
But the hot, sticky weather, overused influencer traps, crowded crowds, and overpriced consumption really lower the overall experience.
It’s great for slow living, short getaways, and food tours, but not suitable for intense, high-energy travel. One visit is enough to satisfy your curiosity ✨
