King's Lake near Munich, Bavaria's autumn fairyland
After a decade-long promise, I finally arrived at Königssee near Munich, a renowned Bavarian paradise that truly lives up to its reputation! Nestled in Berchtesgaden National Park, right next to the Austrian border, it was once a royal private hunting ground. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the lake's water is crystal clear like a mirror, truly deserving the title of "Germany's most beautiful lake."
Autumn at Königssee is like a fairy tale. On a sunny day, the lake sparkles, surrounded by mountains painted in autumn colors. The clear snow line outlines the mountain contours, and the air carries a cool autumn breeze. Every view is refreshing and uplifting. A small reminder: from the end of October, the winter schedule begins, and the Salet Anlegestelle section stops operating. The boat only goes as far as the red-roofed St. Bartholomew's Church, so I missed the chance to hike to see the waterfall—a small regret to note.
This trip's transportation was much more complicated than expected! I took the train from Munich at 8:56 AM to Freilassing, originally scheduled to arrive at 10:30 but seriously delayed until 11:20. Even more unexpectedly, the train from Freilassing to Berchtesgaden Hbf was canceled. I had to transfer by train to Bad Reichenhall, then wait half an hour for bus 841, and after all the hassle, I only reached the lake at 2:30 PM.
Fortunately, the journey was full of surprises: snow mountains, meadows, and wooden houses created a charming scene, as if I had wandered into a Swiss village. Every view was postcard-perfect. The late sunshine on the lake felt like a gentle reward for the day's twists and turns. The unexpected suspension of the boat service also gave me a leisurely hiking time, which was another kind of fulfillment.

Germany Bavaria Königssee Obersee Cliff Mossy St. Bartholomä
#easytravelpost Königssee is the one that ruins other lakes for you. I took the train Munich→Freilassing→Berchtesgaden (Bayern Ticket, 29 EUR/group day), then bus 841 to Schönau (free with guest card, 15 min). Parking is 8 EUR/day if you drive; fills by 10 am.The boat terminal sells return to St. Bartholomä 22.80 EUR, or to Salet (for Obersee) 29.00 EUR—electric boats only, silent, every 30 min in summer.I took the Salet ticket, hopped off at St. Bartholomä first (35 min ride), walked the 10 min path to the hunt chapel with its red onion dome, then re-boarded to Salet (another 20 min).
From Salet, the Obersee flat trail is 15 min to the boathouse viewpoint, another 20 min to the Röthbachfall base. The cliffs here are 2000 m faces of the Watzmann, moss and alpine fern in every seep, waterfalls sewing silver lines down the rock. No swimming in Obersee (it's a drinking-water catchment), no drones, no dogs off-leash—muzzle required on the boat (5 EUR dog fare).I ate smoked trout at the St. Bartholomä beer garden (9 EUR plate, card ok), then hiked back to Salet and caught the 17:10 return. Miss the last boat and you're in a 6 h alpine walkout.
Mistake: I wore sneakers—the Obersee path is gravel and slick after rain, poles would've helped. Carry 2 L, the chapels have taps but not always running. Cash for the parking machine if you drive; card for boat tickets works.
Is a lake so clean they ban swimming on principle still a lake, or a cathedral with water for a floor?
