Traveling independently lets you control your own pace, so you can truly immerse yourself in the borderland karst landscapes and Zhuang ethnic culture. ❌ Why I don't recommend group tours 1. Rushed itineraries: Detian, Mingshi, and Taiping Ancient City are tens of kilometers apart. Low-cost tours try to hit multiple spots in one day, wasting most of your time on the road. You get very little time at Detian Waterfall, making it hard to catch the right light for a rainbow. At Mingshi Scenic Area, they only arrange a quick bamboo raft ride, leaving no time to rent a scooter to explore the rice paddies and watch the sunset. Nearby is Blue Cave Café, a cave shop halfway up the mountain with views of the Guichun River and peak forests—pure Instagram vibes ☕ On a bamboo raft at Mingshi Rice Fields, shoot the fish scale dam. Between 9 and 10 AM, the water is windless and reflections are so clear you can’t tell sky from earth. Light-colored dresses and straw hats are a perfect match. Taiping Ancient Town lights up at 7 PM. From Nanning Wuxu Airport Station, transfer to the Nanning–Chongzuo intercity train and reach Chongzuo South Station in 30 minutes. Locally, it’s best to rent a car or share a ride. Attractions are spread out and mountain roads are winding. Splitting 300–400 yuan per day among 4 people is better than driving yourself. Outsiders can easily get lost on these roads. There’s a direct bus from Chongzuo South to Detian for about 50 yuan one way. You can book it on Trip.com to avoid hassle. 🎫 Ticket booking info Day tickets for Detian Waterfall cost 115 yuan including shuttle bus. Bamboo raft rides are an extra 48 yuan. Book in advance on Trip.com to avoid long lines and sun exposure. July is peak water season with the strongest flow but also the busiest, so tickets sell out fast. Mingshi Rice Fields are free to enter. Bamboo raft rides cost 120 yuan per person. You can also rent an electric bike for 30 yuan a day to explore the riverside greenway. Dongna Yuwan bamboo raft costs about 100 yuan. It’s much less crowded than Detian or Mingshi, perfect if you want a quiet nature experience. ⚠️ Avoid pitfalls Bring your ID card in border areas; checkpoints will check it. Bring plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellent—UV rays and mosquitoes team up here. At Detian Waterfall, 9–11 AM is best for catching double rainbows with the light. Noon to 2 PM has the strongest water flow but backlighting, so choose your timing. Take bamboo rafts from official ticket counters only. Avoid unofficial rafts—they’ll push fake souvenirs.
