After a long time, I’m back at Huan Cui Lou, and the moment I stepped in, I was surrounded by the moist air 💦 The atmosphere of the old house instantly transports you back a hundred years ✨ This is truly my favorite hot spring inn! 🥰 🏛️ Although this building dates back to the Taisho era, its history can be traced even further back to the 19th year of the Keicho era 👀 After changing its name from "Motoyu Suzuki" to "Huan Cui Lou," there’s even a story about Itō Hirobumi inscribing its name 📜 ☁️ The top-floor hall is magnificent and elegant, and in the historically rich bathhouse, those adorable tiles and washbasins make me stop and take photos every time I walk by 📸 (ps. The hot spring is super comfortable~♨️) 🎨 On the path to the open-air bath, it’s said that even the waterfall was designed by the master artist Kaburaki Kiyokata. Hakone Owakudani is a remnant of volcanic activity from about 3,000 years ago. The entire area is desolate and majestic, with the air filled with a strong sulfuric smell, earning it the nickname "Hell Valley." It is a must-visit classic spot for a day trip to Hakone. After arriving by cable car, it is recommended to take a moment to enjoy the view from above before heading down. From the high vantage point, you can take in the steaming vents and unique volcanic terrain all at once, creating a truly breathtaking scene. This area is also a popular photo spot, featuring two famous "Black Egg Monuments," one of which is located near the cable car station exit. For a more complete view of Mount Fuji, it is suggested to walk slightly further back to avoid wires and railings, and take photos from the parking lot area. On clear days, the view of Mount Fuji is incredibly spectacular. While visiting Owakudani, you absolutely cannot miss the highly popular black eggs. These can be purchased at the souvenir shop in the "Owakudani Black Egg Hall." A pack of four costs 500 yen. Although the quantity has decreased by one compared to before, it’s just the right amount for two people to share. The production process of the black eggs is quite unique. Fresh eggs are first placed in an approximately 80-degree hot spring pool and slow-cooked for about 60 minutes. Through a chemical reaction, the surface of the eggshell turns black due to the formation of iron sulfide. The eggs are then transferred to a 100-degree steam pot and steamed for about 15 minutes to complete the process. The striking appearance of black on the outside and white on the inside has made these eggs one of the most iconic symbols of Owakudani.

If you ask me what the most healing moment of a trip to Hakone is, I would say it's sitting in the ropeway gondola, watching the scenery beneath your feet transform from lush green forests to the desolate geothermal valley, and finally catching a glimpse of the serene Mount Fuji in the distance. 🌫️ First Stop: Owakudani — Feel the Pulse of the Earth Starting from Sounzan Station, the moment the ropeway crosses the ridge, almost every passenger lets out a gasp of amazement. As the gondola steadies, if you're lucky, Mount Fuji will majestically appear on the horizon like the opening scene of a movie. • A view of Lake Ashi: From the gondola, you can see the deep blue Lake Ashi shimmering amidst the surrounding mountains. • Gondola beauty: The gondolas here feature large transparent windows, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. 💥🇯🇵6 DAYS IN JAPAN📍 Sharing my Tokyo and surrounding city itinerary DAY 1 — HELLO TOKYO We arrived in the morning, so today is a free day. The plan is to sightsee if we have the energy, and if not, just relax in a cafe while waiting to check in. We left our luggage at the station and explored Ueno and Yanaka areas. Checked into the hotel, rested, and in the evening went to Tokyo Tower. I've been to Tokyo 3 times but never been close to it, so we decided to visit. DAY 2 — KAMAKURA Today we went out of the city to Kamakura for the whole day. It's a lovely city with a relaxed atmosphere by the sea. You can easily do a day trip from Tokyo. But we chose to stay overnight because we're going to Hakone tomorrow. So we chose to stay near Ofuna Station for convenience. DAY 3 — HAKONE For nature lovers, I highly recommend this place. I think the nature here is lush and the views are relaxing. We took a pirate ship cruise on Lake Ashi. We saw views of Mount Fuji and took a cable car up to see Owakudani Valley, an active volcano. There was a sulfur eruption. It felt like a unique experience. DAY 4 — STUDIO TOUR We woke up a bit late today. We walked around Akihabara. We went to Bic Camera to look at electronics. (Initially, we were going to go to Meiji Shrine because I love the atmosphere. I always visit whenever I'm in Tokyo, but because of the rain, we changed our plan. I recommend having a backup sightseeing spot in mind!) In the afternoon, we dedicated time to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. The Making of Harry Potter. For Harry Potter fans, or movie lovers, I highly recommend it. It's very well done. Allow 4-5 hours to watch it. There are so many details. On the way back, we stopped by Shinjuku for a walk. DAY 5 — TOKYO DISNEYLAND Today was dedicated entirely to Tokyo Disneyland. We went in December, and there were Christmas decorations, which were incredibly cute. It was worth the cold and my sore legs. DAY 6 — ASAKUSA TOUR Today started from Asakusa Station. We toured the area. We started by taking a bus to Matsuchiyama Shoden Temple, or what Thai people call the Radish Temple. We continued on to Imado Shrine (the cat shrine) and Sensoji Temple, in that order. Along the way, we stopped for a bite to eat, at a cafe we'd saved on the map. 💭 Hopefully, this will be another option for those planning a trip to Tokyo. The atmosphere is amazing, very relaxing, and you'll get stunning views of the surrounding nature. 🌿 💲 Price Boat fares vary depending on the boarding pier. There are three piers: • Hakone-machi Pier • Moto-Hakone Pier • Togendai Pier For this trip, we chose to take the cable car to Togendai Station and then walk to the boat pier. It was convenient and allowed us to do several activities in one day! 🚠➡️🚢 ⭐ My favorite highlight: ❤️ You can walk up to the top deck of the boat to enjoy the view or take photos with the boat itself. There are many beautiful photo opportunities. ❤️ However, be warned that it can be very windy and cold during the cold season. Wear a windbreaker! ❤️ On a clear day... You'll have the chance to see Mount Fuji from the middle of the lake, a beautiful and unique view. 🗻✨ Overall, it's a relaxing and not tiring activity, perfect for resting your eyes and enjoying the natural beauty of Hakone. 🌿 The day was dedicated to exploring the circular route in Hakone. We used the Hakone Free Pass, which we purchased for several days to allow for flexibility. This pass helps save on transportation costs and is especially beneficial for circular routes. However, it’s important to note its limitations—it doesn’t cover all buses and metro lines. During peak seasons, the area can get crowded, so planning the route in advance is essential. Another feature of Hakone is that public transportation starts winding down around 5:00 PM, so it’s necessary to align your schedule accordingly to avoid extra expenses or getting stranded in remote areas. 🚋 Our journey began in Odawara, with the first stop being Gora Station. Here, we transferred to the mountain tram, which ascends towards the cable car. The route itself is impressive, with its elevation changes and surrounding landscapes. During our visit, the cable car was temporarily out of service despite the good weather, so a shuttle was arranged to the upper station. 🌋 At the summit, we were greeted with a panoramic view of the Owakudani area. This is an active volcanic zone with sulfur gas emissions and a distinctive smell. The area is famous for its black eggs, boiled in hot springs. Due to the high sulfur content, the eggshells turn black, and according to local legend, each egg adds seven years to your life. We tried the eggs, had a quick snack, and continued our journey. 🚠 Next, we descended via the cable car to the pier for sightseeing boats. A cruise on Lake Ashi is included in the Hakone Free Pass. If desired, you can purchase an upgrade on-site for a higher service class. The boat follows a circular route with three stops. We disembarked at the second stop to visit a local shrine, stroll through the town, and take photos with the torii gate by the water. 🗻 During the boat ride on Lake Ashi, we were lucky to catch a clear view of Mount Fuji. The mountain appeared along the route, unobstructed by clouds, blending serenely and confidently into the lake’s landscape. This moment became a natural highlight of the trip, enhancing the overall experience of the route. 🍕 We had lunch at La Terrazza, a restaurant known for its pizza and lake views, making it a popular stop for travelers on the Hakone route. After lunch, we returned to Odawara, completing the circular route.

The location here is actually very convenient, only 750 meters from Kami-Gōra Station and less than 1 kilometer from Naka-Gōra Station. If, like me, you don’t want to drive, just buy a Hakone Free Pass and take the train here. Call the hotel after you get off, and their car will arrive quickly. It’s perfect for lazy travelers who want maximum comfort! The entire hotel follows a refined and boutique style, with only 16 rooms in total, ensuring maximum privacy! The lobby design is very atmospheric, and the mountain view outside the floor-to-ceiling windows is stunning, especially on rainy days. The drizzle hitting the leaves creates a misty green scene like an ink painting. Sitting in the lobby with a free cup of coffee or tea and some snacks instantly helps you relax. This time I booked a room with an open-air private hot spring, and I was amazed as soon as I opened the door! The Japanese-style living room is spacious and bright, and the Western-style bedroom is super comfortable for sleeping. The best part is the private hot spring in the room, directly embedded in the forest scenery. Soaking in the warm spring water with a view of lush greenery and listening to birdsong and the wind rustling through the leaves makes you feel completely one with nature. The hot spring water is a rare golden-colored source, and after soaking, your skin feels silky smooth and super comfortable! The room amenities are also very thoughtful, with a fridge full of free drinks to enjoy, and a full set of Mikimoto toiletries. They even provide children’s bathrobes and slippers—every detail is considered. The hotel facilities fully meet vacation needs. This time in Hakone, we chose to stay at "Sumeisho," which is super close to Hakone-Yumoto Station! Just cross a pedestrian bridge and turn a corner, and it's about a five-minute walk with luggage—perfect location! ✔️ The hotel staff are mostly older, but basic English communication is no problem at all, and most importantly, they are all very friendly 🥹. There's a public bath, as well as private onsen baths that can be booked (¥2200/50mins). I highly recommend the private baths; the view is beautiful, and soaking in them is incredibly relaxing! However, you need to book in advance at check-in, otherwise, they might be fully booked. We brought our 7-month-old baby, and they provided a baby bathtub, baby bath supplies, and even a high chair—so thoughtful! Completely family-friendly accommodation 💯 Dinner was also very plentiful, with exquisite and delicious Japanese cuisine. The only minor drawback is that there's only one elevator, so the wait can be quite long during peak hours. Overall, I highly recommend it.
