11/13–11/16 Tokyo + Hakone 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary
Transportation, Routes, Food, Shopping, and Hot Springs.
This time, I planned a 4-day, 3-night short trip to Tokyo city and Hakone hot springs, following a "relaxed, unhurried, photo-filled" itinerary. It's perfect for first-time visitors to Japan, solo female travelers, or anyone looking for a comfortable city and countryside combo.
Here’s my complete itinerary, transportation details, and daily routes. Feel free to follow along!
⸻
🗓 DAY 1|11/13 Arrival in Tokyo → Shopping in Shinjuku → Dinner
✈️ Arrival in Tokyo (Narita/Haneda both work)
After arriving, head to your hotel for check-in, take a short rest, and then start exploring.
🏙 Highlights: Shinjuku Shopping Hub
Shinjuku is the perfect starting point for first-time visitors to Tokyo. It’s a transportation hub, has plenty of food options, and offers a wide variety of shopping choices.
Recommended spots:
• BicCamera Shinjuku West Exit Store (cameras, electronics, hair dryers)
• UNIQLO, GU, Lumine EST (fashion)
• Isetan Shinjuku (luxury brands)
• Don Quijote DONKI (open 24 hours)
🍽 Dinner Recommendations:
• Ichiran Ramen: A safe choice to warm up your stomach on the first day
• Torikizoku: Affordable izakaya with generous portions
• Sushi Zanmai: High-value conveyor belt sushi

🗓 DAY 2|11/14 Hakone Day Trip (Hot Springs + Owakudani + Lake Ashi)
This is the most relaxing day of the trip. I used the Hakone Free Pass, which covers all transportation, including cable cars, trains, buses, and sightseeing boats.
⸻
🚆 Tokyo → Hakone Transportation
Take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto Station (about 1.5 hours). For a faster option, take the Limited Express "Romancecar" (additional fee required).
⸻
🧭 Hakone Day Trip Route (Recommended Order)
1️⃣ Hakone-Yumoto Station → Gora (Mountain Railway)
Enjoy beautiful scenery along the way, especially autumn leaves. Gora is a great spot for lunch, with many restaurants and a pleasant atmosphere.
⸻
2️⃣ Gora → Sounzan (Cable Car)
Enter the mountain area, with some sections offering views of Mount Fuji in the distance.
⸻
3️⃣ Sounzan → Owakudani (Ropeway)
Owakudani is a must-visit spot with sulfuric geothermal activity and unique volcanic landscapes.
Must-try: Black Eggs
Legend says, "Eating one adds seven years to your life" 🤣
⸻
4️⃣ Owakudani → Togendai
Continue downhill via ropeway, enjoying stunning views.
⸻
5️⃣ Lake Ashi → Pirate Ship Cruise
The "pirate ship" is actually a sightseeing boat, but the scenery is breathtaking. The calm lake and vacation vibes are unmatched.
⸻
6️⃣ Hakone Shrine/Peace Torii (Great for Photos)
A 10–15 minute walk along the lakeside. On clear days, you can capture the iconic "lake + torii + forest" shot.
⸻
♨️ Private Onsen (Highlight of the Day)
I booked a private onsen for 3,500 yen, which is a fantastic deal.
Benefits:
• No need to share with strangers
• Super cozy in winter
• Perfect for solo female travelers
• Stable water temperature and clean facilities
⸻
🏨 Return to Tokyo or Stay in Hakone
If staying in Tokyo: Return trip takes about 1.5–2 hours.
If staying in Hakone: More relaxed pace and less tiring the next morning.
⸻
🗓 DAY 3|11/15 Asakusa → Skytree → Akihabara → Ueno (Food + Shopping)
This day combines city attractions and shopping perfectly.
⸻
🛕 Morning: Asakusa Kaminarimon, Sensoji Temple
• Take photos at Kaminarimon
• Shop for snacks and souvenirs at Nakamise Street
• Try on a kimono in Asakusa (many styles available)
⸻
🗼 Noon: Skytree Soramachi Mall
Located near Asakusa, just a short walk or one train stop away.
Food options:
• Tempura
• Ramen
• Wagyu Beef Rice Bowl
• Panda-themed desserts (super cute)
⸻
🎮 Afternoon: Akihabara (Electronics + Camera Shopping)
Best for:
• Cameras and lenses (price comparison heaven)
• Electronics
• Models and figurines
• ACG merchandise
Recommended stores:
• BicCamera
• Yodobashi Camera
• Yodobashi Akiba (very large)
⸻
🌙 Evening: Stroll around Ueno or Asakusa
Ueno Park is beautiful in autumn, with a relaxing atmosphere. Alternatively, enjoy izakaya near your hotel.
⸻

The final day is for picking up anything you missed.
⸻
🛍 Recommended Shopping Spots:
