Winter completely changes the way I see a destination. I’ve traveled to a few cold weather countries, but three stood out for very different reasons. Finland was probably the most magical. I stayed around Rovaniemi, where everything looked like a Christmas postcard. I also spent time in Levi, surrounded by snowy forests, and had one of those unforgettable evenings waiting for the Northern Lights. The cold was intense, but somehow I didn’t mind. Japan gave me a completely different winter experience. Sapporo was my favorite, especially with its snowy streets and warm bowls of ramen waiting everywhere. I also loved visiting Otaru, where the quiet canals looked beautiful under the snow. A winter trip to Hakuba would be perfect if you’re into skiing. Then there’s Switzerland. In April 2025, we had the opportunity to visit Hakuba. For this trip, we flew from Nagoya to Niigata, then rented a car and drove over 200 kilometers. Hakuba is a town surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is home to several world-class ski resorts, making it absolutely packed with people in the winter. Since we're travelers who prefer peace and quiet, we decided to escape here in the spring instead. Our first stop was Oide Park. Here, you'll see a crystal-clear stream set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains contrasting with the vivid blue sky—it's a truly breathtaking sight. Just a short walk away, there are a few traditional houses to admire. Entry is free, and parking is complimentary but limited. Afterward, we drove around town, pulling over to take photos wherever we spotted a beautiful view. A quick heads-up for those driving: make sure to do your research on parking beforehand. #underratedspots Nakatsugawa is one of Japan's most underrated towns. It's so close to Nagoya that I can hardly believe how many travelers (including myself) simply overlook it. Most people head for Takayama, Matsumoto, Nagano and/or Hakuba while Nakatsugawa rarely gets a mention. I myself only ended up here because I needed a place to stay before hiking the Nakasendo Trail. Little did I know that the town itself would become one of the highlights of my trip. Like Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku, Nakatsugawa was once an important post town along the Nakasendo. Although it has become more urbanized (than Tsumago and Magome) over the years, it still preserves sections of the original trail that run through the town allowing people to experience a piece of its history without the crowds. Another thing I loved was the food. The town is full of excellent local restaurants serving delicious meals at very reasonable prices. It feels like the kind of place where locals still outnumber tourists and that gives it a much more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. If you enjoy exploring small towns, I highly recommend making a stop in Nakatsugawa. Don't just pass through. Don't hesitate to stay at least one night if you can. I actually stayed several nights and used it as a base for day trips to places like Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku. Looking back, every minute I spent in Nakatsugawa was worth it. An In-Depth Chubu-Hokuriku Road Trip: A unique way to explore Japan on an affordable budget This is a review of our incredible 8-day road trip (April 17-24, 2026), where we set out to experience the majestic nature of Japan's Chubu and Hokuriku regions. Our journey began in Nagoya (NGO), took us to Mt. Fuji, then headed north to the Japan Alps, before looping back to Nagoya. It was a thrilling and rewarding trip that gave us an "unseen" experience you simply can't get by sticking to the big cities. 🚗 Transportation (Road Trip): The experience of driving through the Alps Our main mode of transport was a rental car for the entire trip, which gave us the ultimate freedom to pull over and take in the indescribably beautiful scenery along the way. The drive from Mt. Fuji toward Chubu and Hokuriku was especially stunning, taking us through forests and past snow-capped mountains. The roads were easy to navigate, traffic was light, and the signage was clear. Just make sure you don't forget to bring your International Driving Permit! 📌 Car Rental: Great value and super convenient for heavy packers We booked our rental car through Trip with Nissan Rent a Car at NGO Terminal 2. We went with a Nissan Roox, which turned out to be an excellent choice for a two-person road trip because it was cost-effective, nimble, and fuel-efficient. The best part? We managed to fit up to three 24-inch suitcases in the back. It made for a completely worry-free rental experience. 🏨 Hotels: A great mix of accommodations with stunning views We stayed in a wonderful variety of comfortable hotels, ranging from a room with a Mt. Fuji view in Kawaguchiko (Villa Ensoleille) to city hotels like The Celecton Matsumoto and Toyama Manten Hotel. The absolute highlight was HOTEL AMANEK Hidatakayama, where we spent 2 nights. It offered a lovely traditional Japanese vibe and was the perfect home base for exploring Takayama city and Kamikochi. 🏔 Must-Visit Spots: Highlights you can't miss Fuji, Lake Kawaguchiko Kamikochi: The crystal-clear river and snowy mountain views are unmatched. Matsumoto Castle Hakuba: Snow Peak, AO Lakeside Cafe Oide Park: We got to see cherry blossoms with an incredibly scenic mountain view. Funagawa River Tulip Field And the snowy mountain landscapes in the Hokuriku region. Cafe ISOMI Terrace: Watch the landmark train in Toyama. Japan Alps: Shinhotaka Ropeway And whatever you do, don't miss stopping in Takayama for some Hida beef! ✈️ Flights: A smooth start to the journey We took a direct flight from Bangkok (BKK) to Nagoya (NGO). 💸 Budget per person: Including the car rental, it came out to about ~50,000 THB per person. This is an incredible value for an "unseen" experience and the ultimate freedom of an 8-day spring road trip in Japan.

In June, the snow on the mountain peaks has already melted, guys. We visited Hakuba and the atmosphere is absolutely amazing! It's only 16-19 degrees Celsius, but I highly recommend bringing a jacket. It gets extremely cold and super windy up at the top. We took the cable car up via the Iwatake Gondola Noah. It's nice to drop by and enjoy the slow life in the countryside. For this trip, we stayed in Matsumoto. We didn't stay in Hakuba because it's an easy drive back and forth. If you want a guaranteed snowstorm and bottomless powder, you should definitely head up to Hokkaido. But if you're looking for an authentic Japanese atmosphere mixed with an awesome international vibe, this is the place to be! Hakuba offers a massive selection of ski slopes, and about half the staff are internationals. If skiing isn't your thing, there’s still plenty to do—hit up the local cafes or ride the giant swing out toward the mountains for some absolutely breathtaking views. Just strolling around the charming village is a total vibe. Even if the snow hasn't reached its peak fluffiness, there’s still a solid base, so the slopes are perfectly fine for riding. Honestly, nothing can really replace the unique vibe of Hakuba. The village might be small, dining options are a bit limited, and buses stop running early, but you can always grab a taxi. Overall, it’s super convenient to get around even if you don't rent a car. You have to experience it at least once—see if you fall in love with it too! I had the opportunity to visit Hakuba in April 2026. We traveled by rental car. We took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano, picked up our car in Nagano, and then drove to Hakuba. Since we arrived in the evening, our first stop was the ao Lakeside Cafe. Afterward, we went looking for a place to have dinner. Being in the countryside, it was quite difficult to find a restaurant, and most places closed early. We eventually ended up having ramen and stayed for one night. The next morning, we drove to see the cherry blossoms at Oide Park. It was right during full bloom, and the view was as beautiful as a painting.
