📍 Lake Gosau, Austria I stumbled upon this lake by chance on my way to Hallstatt with zero expectations, but it was actually even more stunning and better than Hallstatt itself! 👍🏻 I visited by rental car, but I think there are many tours available these days, so I highly recommend a tour if you can't rent a car!!!! Traditional Austrian houses. Flower-filled balconies. Church towers. The blue waters of Lake Wolfgang stretching into the distance. Then you see the little mountain train waiting at the station. It looks almost like something from another era. And that's when the adventure really begins. 🚂 The Little Train That Climbs the Mountain The Schafberg Railway is not an ordinary train ride. It's a cog railway, designed specifically to climb steep mountain terrain. As the train slowly makes its way uphill, the landscape outside the window changes. The village disappears behind you. Forests become thicker. Meadows begin opening up. And the mountains seem to get closer. The train doesn't rush. And honestly, that's part of the experience. Take some time to walk around. The summit area offers several viewpoints, and even a short walk can lead to completely different perspectives. One moment you're looking toward the lakes. Turn around and you're facing another mountain range. Walk a little further and suddenly the clouds are drifting below you. This is one of those places where having extra time makes the experience much better. ☁️ When the Clouds Move In Of course, mountain weather can change quickly. One minute you can have a clear panoramic view... and a little later, clouds can roll across the summit. At first, I was disappointed. But then I realized it created a completely different atmosphere. The mountains disappear into the mist. The landscape becomes quiet. And the summit suddenly feels mysterious and almost dreamlike. So even if the weather isn't perfect, don't assume the experience is ruined. Sometimes the clouds make the mountain even more beautiful. 🌿 The Austrian Alps Feel Different Up Here After exploring Salzburg and Hallstatt, Schafberg gave me a completely different perspective on the region. From the streets of Salzburg, the mountains are something you look toward. From Hallstatt, they're part of the village landscape. But from Schafberg, you're looking down at the entire alpine world. Lakes, villages, forests and mountains all become part of one giant panorama. It's a completely different way to experience Austria. 🚂 The Ride Down Is Beautiful Too One of the easiest mistakes would be thinking that the best part is only the journey up. The ride back down offers a completely different perspective. Instead of looking toward the summit, you're now looking toward the lakes and valleys below. The train slowly descends through the landscape. And as you get lower, the villages gradually become larger again. It's almost like watching the scenery reverse itself. 🌅 Try to Choose a Clear Day If your main reason for visiting Schafberg is the panoramic view, weather matters. A clear day can make an enormous difference. When the skies are open, you can see much farther across the lakes and surrounding mountains. Early morning can also be beautiful, especially when the landscape is still quiet and the air is clear. But even on a partly cloudy day, the scenery can still be spectacular. My advice? Check the mountain weather before you go, but don't be discouraged by a few clouds. 🏡 St. Wolfgang Is Worth Exploring Too Don't forget about the town at the bottom of the mountain. St. Wolfgang is beautiful in its own right. The lakeside setting, traditional architecture and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place to spend some time before or after the train ride. Walk through the old streets. Have a coffee. Look at the lake. And watch the mountains rising behind the town. I’ve heard so much about Hallstatt—not only its claim to being "the world’s most beautiful town," but also its notoriety for over-tourism. I really didn’t want to spend my Austrian vacation navigating summer crowds, so I spent the night at a campsite nearby. At 6:00 AM, just as the sky was turning pale, I hit the gas and drove straight into a waking Hallstatt. The town is built into the mountainside, and the main road tunnels right through the rock, featuring a small parking area carved out inside the tunnel itself. There are fewer than ten spots available, but luckily it’s mostly empty before 9:00 AM, and you can park for free for two hours. Right next to the lot, a flight of steep stone steps winds down alongside a waterfall, leading you directly into the town. Naturally, my first stop was the famous viewpoint. It’s not an actual platform, just a bend in the road that perfectly frames the town’s panorama against the lake and mountains. It’s surrounded by private homes; one balcony in particular offers a view so unobstructed it must be a constant temptation—I’m sure many have trespassed there. Consequently, alongside the scenery, you’ll find warning signs posted in half a dozen languages. Even before 7:00 AM, about a dozen people had already gathered by the road—all of them overnight guests staying in town. The town was so still that every breath felt like being submerged in the damp lake air and the lush greenery of the mountains. The locals, however, were already awake. Someone was out for a morning run; someone else was watering flowers. A bakery truck had just pulled up, and the driver hopped out to deliver a tray of fresh croissants to a cafe. The owner held the door for him, and the two of them got so caught up in conversation that they completely forgot their tasks. For five solid minutes, they stood there—one bracing the heavy wooden door, the other balancing a full tray of bread. I suppose that counts as a morning workout. I think the "beauty" of Hallstatt originally referred to moments like these. The Austrian Lake District is home to hundreds of towns like this, where life is quiet and comfortable. Residents wake up to pristine lakes and verdant peaks, swim in the lake in the morning, and grab a coffee at a friend’s shop. Comparing it to other lakes nearby, Lake Wolfgangsee is larger, but its lakeside towns are too flat and lack that dramatic, layered mountain aesthetic. Lake Mondsee, which I visited the day before, felt a bit too modern. Only Hallstatt preserves its classical charm, with the church occupying the only flat ground by the water and houses spilling down the slopes along cobblestone paths and stone steps. Basically, I plan everything carefully, then arrive and completely abandon the plan because I see something pretty. 😂 One of the best examples was our trip to Hallstatt, Austria. Before going, I had seen so many photos of Hallstatt online. The beautiful lake, enormous mountains, colourful houses and that famous church tower beside the water. I thought, “Okay, it looks nice.” Then I arrived. My first reaction was basically: WAIT... THIS PLACE IS REAL?! Hallstatt honestly looks like somebody built a tiny fairytale village, placed it beside a perfectly calm lake, added giant mountains behind it, then said, “Hmm... still not dramatic enough. Put a beautiful church tower in the middle.” 😂 Getting there from Vienna is already part of the adventure. We travelled by train towards Hallstatt, and the scenery slowly changed from city views to mountains, forests and lakes. The interesting part is that Hallstatt railway station is actually across the lake from the village. So after getting off the train, you still need to take a short ferry across the water. And THAT ferry ride is when Hallstatt really reveals itself. As the boat approaches the village, you start seeing the little houses squeezed between the mountain and lake, with the tall church tower standing proudly above them. Suddenly everyone on the ferry becomes a professional photographer. Phones come out. Cameras come out. People start moving around looking for the perfect angle. Me included, obviously. 📸 Once we reached the village, my Photographer personality completely took over. “Take one here.” “Wait, the tower isn't straight.” “Take another one.” “Can you move slightly left?” “No, YOUR left!” At some point, sightseeing became a full photography production. 😂 But what surprised me most was how beautiful Hallstatt looked from almost every direction. Walk up one small street and suddenly the church tower appears perfectly between the mountains. Turn around and there is the lake. Walk a little higher and you get another completely different view. And yes, we took the classic couple photos too. One normal photo was apparently not enough. We needed standing poses, hugging poses, leg-up poses and probably enough photos to prove we personally discovered Hallstatt. 😂 Over the years, I think my travel personality has definitely changed. I used to care more about checking attractions off a list. Now I enjoy slowing down and actually appreciating where I am. Hallstatt reminded me exactly why I love travelling. As a world-renowned destination, Hallstatt has long been on my bucket list. Yet, perhaps because of its overwhelming popularity, I was never in a rush to check it off. My recent trip to the Dolomites in Northern Italy and Austria finally gave me the perfect chance to visit. Here is a recap of my three-day, two-night getaway in Hallstatt. ▌Transportation Since driving in Austria wasn't an option for me last year, I took public transit from Salzburg to Hallstatt. There are two main routes: A. Train + Train + Boat, total travel time is about 2.5 hours. Salzburg -> Attnang-Puchheim -> Hallstatt Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Markt (Note: From July 11 to August 2, 2026, the train between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl will be suspended due to construction. A Rail Replacement Bus will be provided. Buses will wait outside the stations, and staff will be on-site to assist you.) B. Bus + Train + Boat, total travel time is about 2 hours. Salzburg -> Bad Ischl Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Markt Traveling with two large 29-inch suitcases, two carry-on bags, and backpacks, I felt taking the bus would be too inconvenient, so I opted for the train + train + boat route. Attnang-Puchheim station is quite compact, making transfers a breeze. Trains arriving at Hallstatt Bahnhof are perfectly timed with the ferry schedule. As long as your train isn't ridiculously delayed, the ferry will wait. One day, on my way back from St. Wolfgang, the train was delayed, and it was already 7:00 PM by the time we arrived at Hallstatt Bahnhof. The last ferry was at 6:50 PM, but the captain actually walked up to the train station to wait for the delayed train and usher the passengers aboard. The ferry is cash only; in 2025, the fare is €4 per person. ▌Accommodation For accommodation, I chose Pepi's Apartment. The apartment was spacious and tucked away from the noisy town center, making it wonderfully peaceful both morning and night. The grandmother who hosts it is just as sweet and welcoming as the reviews say. ▌Travel Experience I stayed in Hallstatt for three days and two nights. Just as many reviews mention, the most beautiful moments are early morning and evening. With the noise of tourists gone, all that remains is the tranquil lake and a crisp, gentle breeze. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend staying here for at least one night to truly experience Hallstatt's peaceful side. It's an absolute world of difference from its usual daytime hustle and bustle. Since I was staying right in town, I walked up to the Hallstatt viewpoint every day, capturing its classic angles and different looks at dawn and dusk. I also ran into photographers from all over the world. Their one shared trait: braving the freezing winds in absolute silence just to take photos.
