🇯🇵 205 TAKAYAMA — An old town nestled in a valley, perfect for a calming stroll.
If Tokyo is the city where you can walk all day without getting tired,
Osaka is the city where you can eat all day without getting full.
Takayama, or “Takayama,” offers a completely different feel.
This is a small town in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, surrounded by mountains, old wooden houses, quiet streets, and a noticeably slower pace of life.
Honestly, if you prefer big-city Japan, you might feel like there’s “not much to do” here 😂
But if you want a break from the rush of landmark-visiting, Takayama is a great place to include in your trip.
⸻
🏘️ 01 — OLD TOWN
The main highlight of Takayama is Sanmachi Suji / Old Town.
Long rows of traditional wooden houses, small shops, cafes, sake breweries, confectionery shops, and local handicraft shops.
What we liked is that it doesn’t feel like a “recreated tourist village.”
Many areas still retain the atmosphere of an old town with authentic shops, making just strolling around enjoyable.
Morning or evening are especially good times to visit. Because it's not as crowded as during the day.
⸻
🌅 02 — MIYAGAWA MORNING MARKET
If you're staying overnight in Takayama, we recommend waking up early one day
and walking to Miyagawa Morning Market.
The market is located along the Miyagawa River and offers a variety of vegetables, fruits, food, souvenirs, and local products.
The market is open every morning, with opening hours varying depending on the season.
The feel is quite different from the Japanese markets in big cities.
It's not a market you need to "check in" at,
but rather a market perfect for a leisurely stroll, buying a small snack, and then heading back for a drink.
⸻
🏯 03 — TAKAYAMA JINYA
Another must-visit spot is Takayama Jinya.
This building served as the government office during the Edo period and is now registered as an important historical site of Japan.
If you're interested in Japanese history, this place is much more interesting than it looks from the outside.
And it's not far from the Old Town.
So you can easily walk between them.
⸻
🥩 04 — HIDA BEEF
When in Takayama, don't miss Hida Beef.
Hida beef is one of the dishes that attracts people specifically to this place.
But personally, we recommend that you don't need to have a big, extravagant meal every time.
Trying Hida Beef Sushi / Hida Beef Skewer / Hida Beef Steak while strolling through the old town is fun.
Besides beef, Takayama Ramen is another local dish you should try.
And around the Old Town, there are plenty of snacks, cafes, snacks, and desserts to stop at.
⸻
🍶 05 — SAKE & CRAFT
Another thing that makes Takayama charming is its sake-making culture and handicrafts.
Walking around the Old Town, you'll find many sake shops, as well as shops selling local products and handmade goods.
If you don't drink alcohol, that's okay too.
Just browsing the old wooden shops, handicrafts, kitchenware, souvenirs, or local sweets is enjoyable enough.
This is a city that... Walking around is also a good activity.
⸻
🏔️ 06 — How long should you stay?
Personally, we think 2 days and 1 night is ideal.
Day 1: Explore Old Town → Takayama Jinya → Miyagawa → Eat Hida Beef → Explore the town in the evening.
Day 2: Wake up early and go to the Morning Market → Cafe → Buy souvenirs → Continue your journey.
But if you have 3 days, you can use Takayama as a base to explore the surrounding areas.
Especially Shirakawa-go.
From Takayama, there is a bus to Shirakawa-go, which takes about 50 minutes following the sample Takayama sightseeing route.
Or you could go to Hida Furukawa, a small town nearby. The atmosphere is quieter than Takayama.
⸻
🚆 07 — Is it difficult to get around?
It's not exactly difficult, but it does require a bit of planning.
From Nagoya to Takayama, there's a Limited Express train that takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, or a bus that takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, according to Takayama city information.
Therefore, if you're already visiting Nagoya, adding 1-2 nights to Takayama is relatively easy.
However, it's important to note that Takayama isn't a city you should rush through.
If you only have a few hours and have to rush back, you'll miss out on a lot of the city's charm.
⸻
❤️ In short, from friend to friend:
Takayama isn't a city we went to for "the most things to do."
It's a city we went to for:
to stroll slowly 🚶♂️
to eat delicious food 🥩
to see old wooden houses 🏘️
to wake up early and visit the market 🌅
to sit in a cafe ☕
to buy souvenirs 🛍️
and to let the day pass without rushing.
If you're planning a Japan Trip that includes Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka and feel like you want to add... A city that changes the mood of your trip.
Try adding Takayama to your itinerary.
Because sometimes the highlights of Japan aren't the big landmarks.
Instead, it might be the small towns that make you slow down without even realizing it. 🇯🇵✨
