"One old street, half the history of Hohhot" 🏮 Our first stop in Hohhot was the Sai Shang Old Street! This ancient street, over 400 years old, connects to the Dazhao Temple and encapsulates all the memories of old Guihua. 📸 Citywalk The old street wasn't crowded during the day, but it was very sunny; the sunlight shone on the gray bricks and tiles, creating excellent lighting, perfect for taking ethnic-style photos. After 6 pm, as the sun set, the gray walls against the blue sky created a stunning scene! 🍖 Food Guide There are many Inner Mongolian specialty snacks… ✔️Dairy products: We tried the cheese milk tofu pie, highly recommended, it was incredibly delicious! 8 yuan/piece ‼️Grilled skewers, 15 yuan/large skewer, choose carefully! The skewers we chose were particularly bad, dry and hard, and the meat wasn't fresh! ‼️Lamb trotters, 25 yuan/2 pieces, not as good as the ones we had in Ningxia, a bit gamey. ✔️Hot and sour noodles, 15 yuan/bowl, not bad. ‼️Stinky tofu, 15 yuan/large portion, not good! ✔️Grilled ice cream, not bad. 🚶‍♀️Route suggestions If you visit Dazhao Temple first, enter from the East Gate; If you come in the afternoon, I suggest entering from the West Gate to avoid being directly in the sun – it's really hot! 🌟History The unique cultural charm of this "Blue City" can be said to be concentrated in the Old Street of the Frontier and the nearby Dazhao and Ramoche Temples. Hohhot is a very magical city. It was able to transform from a purely nomadic land into a settled city where people from all walks of life willingly "stayed," a choice made by history and also due to the wonderful fusion of cultures. 1️⃣Pre-Qin to Qin and Han Dynasties: During the Warring States period, King Wuling of Zhao established Yunzhong Commandery and promoted "Hu-style clothing and cavalry archery" to facilitate the integration of agriculture and animal husbandry. 2️⃣ From the Wei, Jin, Song, and Yuan dynasties: The Xianbei Tuoba tribe built "Shengle City" here, laying the foundation for their later conquest of the Central Plains. 3️⃣ During the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, this area was called "Fengzhou," becoming a bustling transportation hub frequented by merchants. Known as the “No. 1 mansion in southern Inner Mongolia,” it offers a one-stop experience to understand nearly 300 years of Qingcheng’s history through the story of one general’s mansion. Admission is free and no reservation is needed; just show your ID to enter. The museum has 11 exhibition halls, including 5 core themed displays, with over 110,000 artifacts, among which 96 are precious cultural relics. 1. Historical background 1. Suiyuan city: In the 13th year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign (1735), to prevent the Zunghar from invading the border again and to manage the Mongolian tribes in Guihua city nearby, the Qing dynasty chose a site five li northeast of Guihua city to build a garrison camp for the right guard of the Eight Banners. Construction of the new city began in the second year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign, who personally named it “Suiyuan city.” Because the north gate, east gate, main street, and drum tower are not aligned, there is a folk saying about “four gates not matching, drum tower not straight.” 2. Suiyuan general: The highest official in Inner Mongolia during the Qianlong period, directly appointed by the emperor with the rank of first-class official. The general oversaw local defense, governance, and public order. Starting from the second year of Qianlong’s reign, when General Wang Chang, previously stationed in Shanxi’s right guard, was ordered to move to Suiyuan city, until the last general Kunxiu in the second year of Xuantong, there were 79 generals in total.
