Hveragerei travel guide and discussion

In the warmth of Reykjadalur, where the river flows like our love, we find a place where time stands still and hearts beat as one. The Reykjadalur Hot Spring Natural River is a hidden gem nestled in the scenic landscapes of Iceland. As you hike through the valley, the trail offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, steaming vents, and bubbling mud pools. 1. Reykjadalur Valley (Natural Hot Spring River) Address - Reykjadalur 816, 816, Iceland Highlights - A perfect setting for couples looking to connect in a tranquil and intimate environment Rating - 5 stars #100WaysOfTravel

One of the most memorable experiences is soaking in a hot spring in a wild stream. Reykjadalur Thermal River is not far from the capital Reykjavik, located in Hveragerð (geothermal hot spring town), and the entrance is in the parking lot. As soon as we got there, we saw several geothermal outlets📸. We followed the only hiking trail up the mountain. The scenery along the way was extremely beautiful👍📸, with steam curling around the mountain, like a fairyland🌹. It takes about an hour to walk there📸. Because we were in the wild, the clothes were placed by the stream and changing was also done in the open air (only wooden boards in a "+" shape covered the two sides). #IcelandTravel #IcelandAttractions

Want a day that shows you just how crazy Iceland’s landscape can be? 🚗🇮🇸 Head south from Reykjavík and combine Grindavík’s recent volcanic landscape with a hike to a natural hot river. 🏘️ 1. Grindavík — A Town Changed by Volcanoes Grindavík was evacuated in November 2023 after intense earthquakes and volcanic activity. In January 2024, lava actually reached the town and three houses were destroyed. Today, you can see some of the areas where the ground cracked and lava reshaped the landscape. The town has been reopened, but closures and safety restrictions can change, so follow all local signs and never enter restricted areas or abandoned properties. 🌋 2. The Lava Barriers Around Grindavík you can see the enormous defensive barriers built to protect the town from future lava flows. It’s pretty surreal seeing these huge man-made structures next to fresh volcanic landscapes — a real reminder that this isn’t ancient Icelandic geology. This is happening now. 💦 3. Brimketill Continue along the coast to Brimketill, a natural pool carved into the black lava coastline by the Atlantic Ocean. 🌊🪨 It looks almost like a natural hot tub, but do not get in. The ocean around it is extremely powerful and unpredictable, and waves can reach the viewing platform. 🥾 4. Reykjadalur On the way back toward Reykjavík, stop at Hveragerði and hike into Reykjadalur — the “Steam Valley.” The trail takes you through a geothermal valley filled with steaming vents and colourful hills before reaching a naturally warm river where you can actually bathe. ♨️🌋 After hiking through the Icelandic landscape, getting into a warm river surrounded by mountains is one of those experiences that feels completely ridiculous — but amazing. 😂 📍 Route: Reykjavík → Grindavík → lava barriers & damaged areas → Brimketill → Hveragerði → Reykjadalur → Reykjavík ⏱️ Allow a full day if you want to properly enjoy both Grindavík and the Reykjadalur hike. 🌋 Fresh lava. 🏘️ A town reshaped by volcanic activity. 🌊 Wild Atlantic coastline. ♨️ A natural hot river. One day, two completely different sides of Iceland’s fire and geothermal power. 🇮🇸🔥 #travel2026

#arrivalguide I left Reykjavík at 4 pm and reached the Hveragerði trailhead car in 40 minutes via Route 1. The Reykjadalur ("Steam Valley") hike is the most accessible wild geothermal soak near the capital, but people underestimate it. The signed trail is 3 km one way, about 50–90 min up depending on pace, with ~ sections in the first 800 m where the boardwalk gives way to gravel and mud. I wore trail runners and regretted it—by the upper valley the path was slick with clay and melting snow even in late July. Total river itself sits at 36–40°C where hot runoff mixes with the cold mountain stream; the sweet spot is just above the small wooden bridge where you can rearrange stones to balance hot and cold flow. There's a changing platform, not cubicles—wear your swimsuit under layers, bring a quick-dry towel, and pack out everything. No fee, no booking, open is free but fills by 11 am in summer; evening (after 5 pm) gives you steam-on-water light and fewer people. Hveragerði town has a bakery and a geothermal park if you want a bread-stop before driving back. Rules: stay on the boardwalk sections to protect moss, don't soap the river, leash dogs. A mistake I made once was going midday in August—the valley smelled amazing but the river was crowded with 30 bathers; the second time at 6:30 pm I had a 40 m stretch to myself. Question for others: do you treat Reykjadalur as a workout-plus-soak, or purely a bathing walk where slow is better?
