The portion is huge and looks spectacular. But the true star of the show is the panko-fried shrimp! They are seriously massive—almost twice the size of my hand! Meaty and juicy, with a perfectly crispy crust on the outside and unbelievable tenderness inside. I’ve never come across fried shrimp this huge and high-quality before. It's an absolute must-order! The Full Coastal Trek. · Duration: 4–6 hours · You can hike the entire stretch from Kadowaki to Izu Marine Park, continuing to TAJIMA-FALLS, and eventually ending up at Izu-Kogen Station. This is a wilder, more scenic route offering non-stop ocean views. Most of the trail winds through the forest, but the paths are easy to follow, featuring plenty of ups and downs with built-in stone steps. The lush woodland, pleasantly humid air, and the sound of the ocean make for pure bliss. Escaping the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, we briefly "exiled" ourselves to the Izu Peninsula. This time, there were no complicated transfer schedules, nor the hassle of dragging luggage through unfamiliar stations. We chose a more leisurely way—chartering a car—to embark on a romantic journey of mountains, sea, and lava. Setting off from Shinjuku early in the morning, the city skyline outside the window gradually gave way to lush mountains. When the huge "matcha pudding"—Mount Omuro—appeared before us, it felt like stepping into Makoto Shinkai’s "Your Name." Taking the cable car slowly to the summit, standing on the edge of the dormant volcano, we enjoyed a 360° panoramic view of the silent Mount Fuji and the vast Izu Seven Islands, with the breeze carrying the scent of freedom. After descending, we visited the cactus zoo across the way for a healing encounter with the capybaras. Watching these calm little creatures leisurely soaking in the hot springs, their furry touch instantly smoothed the wrinkles in our hearts. The afternoon was dedicated to the Pacific Ocean. The black lava cliffs of Kinosaki Coast are a love letter left to the sea by a volcano four thousand years ago. Strolling across the 23-meter-high Monki Suspension Bridge, beneath our feet the crashing waves rolled like piles of snow, and the sea breeze howled past our ears. At that moment, the world was reduced to the ultimate clash of blue and black. Thanks to the spontaneity and freedom of chartering a car, we also encountered the legendary "Kinmedai" sea-view train. The train sped along the coastline, with the azure sea just within reach outside the window, as if the next second it would enter the world of a Studio Ghibli animation. As dusk fell, carrying the sea breeze and sunset back to Tokyo, we realized that the meaning of travel might not be about how many sights you check off, but about the luxury of completely wasting time on beautiful things. Even if the weather isn't great (it was windy and raining on the day of my visit), you'll still find delightful surprises. The biggest highlight is definitely the therapeutic sight of the famous capybaras soaking in their hot springs. With red pandas, little foxes, African penguins, flamingos, and many more animals around, I had an absolute blast that day. Recommended Route & Highlights: · I highly suggest heading straight to the capybara hot spring area right after entering. Especially in winter, watching the capybaras lazily soak in the bath is incredibly soothing. · Afterward, take a clockwise stroll around the park. Along the way, you might spot red pandas, little foxes, mandarin ducks, and other ducks. Some animals will even walk right up to you, making it perfect for those who love taking photos and feeding them. · The giant cactus greenhouse is the park's main theme. Visiting on a rainy, windy day actually meant fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed and leisurely stroll. Mt. Omuro is a mountain situated right next to Ito City. It was once a volcano but is now completely extinct. The views here are absolutely stunning! There's a walking path that circles the crater, giving you a breathtaking 360-degree bird's-eye view of Ito City. From up here, you can even spot Hakone and Mount Fuji too! Right in the center of the mountain, there is now an archery range where you can go down and shoot some arrows. For our trip, we drove from Tokyo. We left a little early, and the drive took about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once we arrived, we just hopped on the chairlift straight to the top. This dormant volcano, sitting just a few hundred meters above sea level, is the most therapeutic spot on the Izu Peninsula. From a distance, its perfect cone covered in soft green grass looks exactly like a giant matcha pudding with a huge scoop taken out of it—it’s so cute you just want to take a bite. Riding the slow-moving chairlift up the mountain, you'll feel the gentle breeze as breathtaking ocean views and mountain ranges unfold before your eyes. Once you reach the summit and stroll along the crater's circular walking trail, you'll see a bowl-shaped depression tens of meters deep right below you. Look up, and you're treated to a stunning 360-degree panoramic view—on a clear day, Mount Fuji seems to float quietly in the distance, while the Izu Islands and the endless Pacific Ocean stretch out on the other side. In spring, Sakura-no-Sato at the base of the mountain bursts into pink cherry blossoms. Summer brings a lush, vibrant green across the slopes, autumn sees silver grass swaying gracefully in the wind, and winter occasionally dusts the peak with white snow. 🌸 Last week, I went on a spring trip to Izu with friends and booked a guesthouse next to Izu Kogen Station. On the way to the guesthouse by car, we passed through a 3-kilometer-long "Cherry Blossom Tunnel." Of course, we already knew about it, and the guesthouse owner even mentioned on the house page, "The house is right next to the Cherry Blossom Avenue"~ 🌸 This road is also one of Izu's iconic cherry blossom viewing spots. Along the winding road, densely covered with blossoms, there are 600 tall and ancient cherry trees planted. Their canopies stretch toward the center of the road, forming a cherry blossom tunnel. This is the stage for Somei Yoshino cherry trees. On the side without sunlight, cars rush by like shuttles; on the side where sunlight filters through, the entire cherry blossom tunnel suddenly lights up.
