If you happen to visit Saariselka in Finnish Lapland you definitely have to visit the Kaunispaa Fell that is situated next to the village. The triangulation tower is situated right on top of the fell and it offers a good way to have a beautiful view to the surrounding fells and other mountains in the very North Finnish Lapland. I especially recommend going to see the midnight sun from the tower since during a clear summer night the sun can be clearly visible from the tower. The tower was built in 2011 to replace the old similar tower that was built during 1950’s and destroyed in 2009. It was used by land surveyors who were able to see long distance from the tower that was situated significantly over the surrounding terrain at about 500 meters above the sea level. You can access the tower from Saariselka center by car by taking the road called Kaunispaantie from the center of the village (north side) or by walking to the top off the fell. During the winter the top of the fell can also be accessed using ski lifts from the Saariselka village. There is no admission fee or tickets to the tower. You don’t need to be an experienced adventurer to see them — but a little planning can make a big difference. When is the best time? The Northern Lights are most visible when nights are long, dark and clear. In destinations such as northern Norway and Finnish Lapland, the viewing season generally runs from late August or September through March or early April. For particularly good odds, consider travelling around September–October or February–March, when aurora activity tends to be stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes. I’ve spent three seasons working in Finnish Lapland, so I’ve experienced it from a slightly different perspective to the average visitor — and it honestly remains one of the most magical places I’ve ever been. ❄️🇫🇮 If you’re thinking about a Lapland trip, here are a few things I’d definitely recommend knowing before you go: ❄️ Don’t underestimate the cold – the temperatures can drop seriously low, especially in the evenings. Proper thermal layers, good gloves and warm footwear make a HUGE difference. 🦌 Build in time for experiences – husky sledding, reindeer rides, snowmobiling and seeing the Northern Lights are incredible, but don’t cram your itinerary so tightly that you have no time to simply enjoy the surroundings. 🌌 Be flexible with the Northern Lights – they’re a natural phenomenon, so there’s never a guarantee. Give yourself several nights rather than booking your entire trip around one evening. 🎅 It’s not just for children! – I think adults sometimes overlook Lapland because of the Santa association, but the scenery, snowy forests, activities and Arctic experiences make it an amazing destination for adults too. 🥾 Wear practical clothes – you might look cute in your Christmas jumper, but trust me, you’ll appreciate being warm much more! 😂 ✨ And my biggest tip? Aurora Chasing Series — Part 4 of 4 We could already hear the huskies the moment we arrived. They sounded just as excited as we were, eager to get going. 😂 This time, we were in Ivalo, Finland, for a husky ride under the Northern Lights. It was already dark and cold when we arrived at the husky farm. We were given thermal suits and shoes before being briefed on how to control the sled, work with the huskies and, most importantly, how to stop. There were around six to eight sleds in our group, including the guides. One guide led the group at the front, while another stayed at the back to make sure no one was left behind. Each sled was shared by two people. One person stood at the back to control the sled and huskies, while the other sat in front. My husband took control of our sled while I sat in front, taking in the experience. It was pitch dark, and we had little to rely on except the headlights from the sleds and our eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. There was something quite surreal about gliding through the night with only those small beams of light showing us the way. The huskies were so energetic and fast. We sped through the darkness, across a frozen lake and then up a hill. And just as we started climbing, the Aurora appeared above us. No words could really describe that moment. While I was enjoying the ride and looking up at the Aurora, my husband was having fun trying to keep up with the energetic huskies. Every time he slowed down, they would turn their heads and look back at him as if asking: “Why are you stopping? What are you doing?” 😂 It took us about 45 minutes to reach the top, where a teepee was waiting for us with warm sandwiches and coffee. We had about an hour there to enjoy dinner, listen to the guides share their stories and, of course, admire the Aurora. The snow-covered trees looked almost like cotton candy under the lights, creating a surreal Arctic scene. The teepee was a welcome place to warm up, but with the Aurora outside, we couldn’t stay indoors for long. We kept heading out to admire the sky, then returning for some warmth and food before venturing out again. As the night went on, the temperature dropped to around -40°C, and with the wind, it felt even colder. And it was about halfway through the ride back that I started feeling seriously cold. I was already shivering and honestly felt like I was getting close to hypothermia. By the time we finally reached the hut, my nose was bright red and my eyelashes were completely iced over. 😂 Looking back, all four Aurora experiences were memorable for completely different reasons. The Jeep gave us a personal introduction to Aurora chasing. The bus brought us to a viewing spot where the lights gradually put on a show. The snowmobile took us around Lake Inari under a cloudy sky, with only a faint glow breaking through. And the husky ride brought us into the pitch-black Arctic night, with energetic dogs racing beneath the Aurora. Four nights. Four activities. Four different landscapes. And four very different versions of the Northern Lights. Perhaps that’s what made the whole Aurora chasing adventure so special. There wasn’t one “best” night — each one gave us a different story to bring home.

Opinion: Lemmenjoki is the EU's last gold-panning taiga where you pay EUR 20 to find nothing and love it, and the mossy driftwood riverbank above Ravadas is the 30-min half with zero Ravadas-Falls crowd. Would you take a 90 min gravel drive for a mossy taiga riverbank + a gold-pan you'll never fill?

The mossy half is the 2 km Kiilopuro loop from the Fell Centre where 300-yr-old Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) rise from a Sphagnum–Pleurozium carpet and Hypnum pads the buttress flares — fog off the fells till 9 even in June. I flew Helsinki→Ivalo (EUR 180), bus to Kiilopää (EUR 12, 30 min), slept at Fell Centre cabin (from ~EUR 1,600/week self-cater, or EUR 132/night hotel half-board), walked at 7 a.m. The old-growth stand is the north slope above Kiilopuro stream — boardwalk 200 m, then cut-timber tread, moss 20 cm thick off-board. Mistake: I walked it in November — first snow, board ice, moss under 10 cm white, turned back at the stream, lost the old-growth light. Jun–Sep or Mar–Apr (ski). Second mistake: I stepped off the board "for a pine-root photo" — Finnish Everyman's Rights let you walk anywhere but the bog takes 30 yrs to rebound, ranger at the centre: "board exists for a reason, EUR 40 fine off-board in protected stand". Third: I expected card at the Kiilopää kiosk — EUR 3.50 korvapuusti card fine, but the sauna wood honour box coins only. Buy at Fell Centre: a EUR 3.50 korvapuusti, not the EUR 28 dinner buffet. Gear: 1.5 L water, EUR 100 shoes, EUR 60 shell. Local rule: Everyman's Rights (walk/camp), Fell Centre cabin EUR 1,600/wk card, no fire in wildfire warning, stay on board in old-growth, the pine buttress is 300 yrs old not a step. Opinion: Kiilopää is the EUR 12 bus ride from Ivalo that gives you 300-yr pines + moss for the price of a pulla, and the north-slope Kiilopuro stand is the 10-min half with zero Saariselkä-spa crowd. Would you take a Finnish smoke-sauna then walk a mossy 300-yr pine loop at 68°N?

#easytravelpost Urho Kekkonen National Park (UKK) sprawls 2,550 km² over eastern Lapland, but the western gate at Kiilopää is where most international hikers meet it. I flew to Ivalo, took the airport bus to Saariselkä (20 min, ~15 EUR), then the local bus to Kiilopää Fell Centre (30 min, ~10 EUR), and slept at the Saariselkä hostel (35 EUR dorm) the night before. No park entry fee, ever. The Sudenjukka route runs from Kiilopää north along the old reindeer herders' line: 12 km one-way, gently rolling through low birch, then treeless fell, to the Sudenjukka kota (open lean-to, free) on the shore of a small tarn beneath a 40 m cliff where the sphagnum moss runs in 5 cm sheets down the seep line. Open wilderness huts are free first-come-first-served; reservable bunks (e.g. Kiilopää–Sudenjukka corridor) run ~11–15 EUR/night booked via Eräluvat. I carried a tent anyway—July beds fill by 16:00. Mistake: I trusted the "midnight sun" and started at 22:00, walked till 01:00, and fog rolled over the fell—judge fatigue, not daylight. Another: I filtered a brown meltwater stream without thinking and spent a night sick; boil or 0.1-micron filter all UKK water. Would you day-hike Sudenjukka from Kiilopää and back (24 km), or sleep at the kota and catch the cliff moss at dawn both ways?
