Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region) In Jaca, be sure to visit the castle, a fine example of 16th century military architecture, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. The castle was built in 1592. Thus, the monument was pentagonal in plan, of imposing size, including a moat, and built on flat ground. There are other very important buildings such as the Romanesque Cathedral (11th century), declared a National Monument, the Benedictine Monastery, the Church of Santiago, the Hermitage of Zalsa, the San Miguel Bridge, the Bell Tower (15th century) and the Town Hall. One of its most important festivals takes place on the first Friday in May and commemorates a medieval battle. There are tournaments, jousting, magnificent processions of standard-bearers, and trials in ancient Aragonese sports such as the bar throw. June 25th is an important day in Haka to celebrate the patron saint’s day. Pyrenees Adventure in Spain ~ Huesca (Region) Also known as "Castle of Jaca," this fortress was built between the 16th and 17th centuries under the orders of King Philip II and restored in 1968. Engineer Spanochi followed military architectural standards derived from the use of artillery. It is the only fortress of this architectural style still standing in the world today. The layout is pentagonal, with arrow-shaped bastions at each corner and a moat that now serves as a resting place for deer. Its drawbridge leads to the parade ground, which is surrounded by various barracks. One of these houses a military miniature museum, where you can learn more about the castle's history through 32,000 lead soldiers.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region) Beautiful spot with panoramic views of the city of Jaca and the entrance to the Aragon Valley. This now-abandoned military fortress was built in the late 19th century by order of Spanish monarch Alfonso XII to deter French invasion. This mountain is located in the Rapitan Mountains in the north of Jaca and we Jaca residents often climb it to get the best views of our city. The best time of year to see it is in winter or summer, when you can experience the best of each season. In winter, because you will be in a “chelé”, as we say in Jaca, and in summer, because you will feel the fresh breeze that comes from the north and blows through the valleys of Aragon. You can go up the mountain in two ways: by road or the traditional route through the mountains, and then for the brave, along the Camino de Ipas to Jaca. I usually choose the latter because it is the most exhausting, but the most beautiful. The distance between Jaca and Lapitán is about 5 km, so if you are a tourist and don’t want to get too tired, you can easily drive there from Jaca. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Aragon
