If you're vacationing in Bali and wondering whether it's worth taking a quick trip or flight to Java for a couple of days, my answer is a resounding YES! We actually flew there for an interview at the US Embassy, but decided not to miss the chance to explore East Java while we were at it. And it turned out to be one of our most beautiful trips ever! 😻 If you're short on time, this is the exact itinerary I'd recommend. 📍 Day 1 — Tumpak Sewu Waterfall It all starts out pretty chill. Viewpoints, stunning scenery, snapping a few photos. But the further you go, the wilder the trail gets. First, it's just regular paths, then dirt steps, followed by stairs with water cascading down them. Eventually, you're literally scrambling over rocks and climbing right through the waterfall! 😁 ❗️ So here is my top tip: do not wear sneakers. Bring Crocs or comfy non-slip sandals, and absolutely pack a change of clothes (you can leave them in the car). You will get completely soaked. 💯 I also really want to give a shoutout to the local guides. Not only do they help you navigate the tricky trail, but they also shoot absolutely divine photos and videos 🥰 Honestly, some of our best shots from Indonesia were taken right here. After the hike, we had a relaxing lunch and drove to our hotel. This is another huge perk of booking a tour. After hours of trekking through waterfalls and climbing rocks, it's incredibly nice to just pass out in the back of a car instead of having to drive yourself. 📍 Day 2 — Mount Bromo Our alarms went off at around 1:30 AM. We drove to the first meeting point, hopped into some bright, colorful jeeps, and headed up to catch the sunrise. The walk to the viewpoint is super short and on a paved road, so there's absolutely no need to worry about a tough hike. Once at the spot, we were treated to hot cocoa and a light breakfast while waiting for the first rays of sun. Honestly, photos don't even come close to capturing the scale of this place. 🔥 From above, the valley looks like another planet. Parts of it feel like Mars, while others look straight out of a sci-fi movie. Massive volcanoes, a sea of clouds, smoking craters, and endless stretches of sand. After sunrise, we headed down, walked right up to the Bromo crater, flew the drone for some epic footage, and made it back to the hotel for breakfast by 8:00 AM. After that—off to the airport and flying back to Bali. 📍 If you have an extra day Add Mount Ijen to your itinerary. We had already visited Ijen on a previous, separate trip, so we skipped it this time. But most guided tours actually bundle Tumpak Sewu — Bromo — Ijen into a single 3-day itinerary. Surabaya-Bromo cycling Experience Roundtrip... 205km 2000m elevation gain. Losing full 2kg 108->106kg during the trip. I consume 2 gel and 1 power bar, 6 Snickers, 5 Liter of water, and 1 cup of infamous POP MIE for the whole climbing trip (I know it's a lot, with my body weight, i guess it's necesary). I have to admit it is not an easy climb ranging 8-13% for most of the last 20km climb. Last 1.5km is the scary part averaging at 16%. The climb and gradient will kill you MENTALLY, muscle cramp will kill you MENTALLY, feel of hunger will kill you MENTALLY. So really, your worst enemy would be your MENTAL PREPAREDNESS. I haven't mention the heat, yeah i guess the heat is what most people complaining about, luckily during the duration of this ride, i didn't see our sun at all, it's definitely an advantage. So i guess that would add up as a mental challenge as well. Here's my word of advice for those of you who want to try the challenge. I'm probably the worst climber due to my weight. It's a disadvantage on my part, believe me I know, it is as hard as you could imagine. i tried to lose as much weight as I can. So yeah, lose weight people! I always mention Mental mental and mental. I don't think i would be able to finish the challenge if my friend Reggie left me alone, climbing on my own, I was the last person to finish the climb, and regie kept pushing me time after time. So find a right partner. You'll be a happier person during the climb. Muscle cramp is another whole level of mental test during the climb. Luckily I didn't experience any muscle cramp AT ALL. How? What i learn is to DRINK WATER A LOT to prevent muscle cramp. Some people drink max 1.5Liter (2bidon) during the whole climbing. It really depend on your physique. Rule of thumb, if you notice the first sign of muscle cramp, drink a lot. How much is 'a lot'? Again, depend on your physique. I drink at least 500ML or 1 full bidon. Considering this much water i need to carry, I carried water bladder with 2 liter capacity. Beating the gradient. know your strength, choose the right gear, i'm not ashamed to admit i need 34 chainring, and 32 or even 34 cassette. But remember, too light could also drain you faster. Don't get carried away with someone with higher pace, find your own pace! You have a long way climb ahead of you. Bring enough gel or power bar or even snickers, without it i'd have been done for the day. #travelling a It's a long climb, your back will hurt a lot. Do some stretching if you feel back pain on/off the bike. take it one step at a time, find a great partner, drink enough water by then you should be able to finish #bromo100km #challenge #beautifulclimbbeautifulchallenge. There are many active volcanoes in Indonesia and there are many tours. You can find a place at Tugu Manglang Hotel in Manglang, the eastern part of Java Island, the center of Ninni, and apply for a local tour in the nearby area. It is a Spartan course that starts at 3 AM and continues until 10 AM the next day, from the sunrise of Bromo to climbing the volcano crater. When you climb the crater, you can feel that the Earth is alive, just like the saying, Mother Nature. The ground shakes and a huge steam sound rises from deep within the Earth. Depends how you roll - if you get a package dont worry about it, youre not in control so it doesnt really matter. Its a cool place to check out. If you are travelling ruff and rugged here are a few tips. If you are short on time stay near the mountain, not probolinggo cuz its a haul in the early AM. If you have a lot of time then Probolinggo can be a launchpad for a few days of looking around at waterfalls and whatnot. If you are a foreigner and are not hiking or taking a motorcycle taxi - when you park the middlemen will hit you up to sell you a ticket for a jeep ride - dont get burned just ignore them and go the little office behind them where the workers sit and ask them for a voucher - theyll sell it at the legit price which right now is 350,000 RP - so while they are right behind the middlemen if you dont know whats going on theyll let you get pinched because thats the way they run things. As well, they charge you to go see the sunrise and then to the volcano- the day we went the sun didnt come up but they took us there anyway and they knew it was pointless - so there might Be some point in asking about the weather at the top - you just end up feeling stupid when they take you to see this amazing sunrise and then they say o sorry today is cloudy. Ijen Resort and Villas is a materialization of a dream. A long time dream which stayed in mind during some decades.    The First Inspiration The story of Ijen Crater was heard for the first time from an old uncle who happened to be sent there joining forced workersīó by the japanese army in the second world war period. It was in his childhood time.  The Solitary Crater, it is so called because of its position, alone out of reach and out of nowhere. It sounded rather intriguing. The old uncle said that it took the whole day walk to cross through the dark jungle, to arrive in a vast open plain area where they had to spend the night before hiking up the mountain on the next day. I finally got the chance to visit this active volcano and believe it or not it’s one of the WORLD’s MUST-SEE VOLCANOES because apparently this Ijen Volcano Crater has the world’s largest acidic volcanic crater lake which, the water is actually in UNIQUE turquoise color! Imagine how cool is that! THIS TIME, We are here for the sole purpose of visiting this crater because this turquoise colored-lake within the crater is quite famous for it’s color and the local miners normally call it the Kawah Ijen. This crater is located right on top of the Mount Ijen where you have to hike 3km from the bottom starting all the way up taking the one way narrow and steep trail to reach the top. For a novice like me i would say this is quite challenging to walk and climb in the dark with a torchlight that provides barely enough visibility to see what’s coming your way in a few meters. While hiking and climbing up you can see a lot of old sulfur miners ( some barefooted ) marathon-ing using the same trail carrying a basket each as if racing with each other to reach the top to dig minerals, sulfurs or whatsoever they have to dig to sell it for money, leaving us behind staggering and struggling to make each step forward in reaching the same point of mountain. The area of the zoo is very big, so if you feel that you can't walk much, it is better to rent the battery car vehicle which can be used around the park. There are lots of varieties of animal inside this zoo and there is a dedicated theme park for kids as well. It has safari track as well where we can sit in the provided vehicle and feed the animals inside. It is very important that you go to the safari farm as you can see and personally feed animals like camels, hippo, deer, and antelope. The earlier you come the better as it will take you the whole day to circle around the area. Upon arrival, check the customer care desk for discounts/promo. Here is Kawah #ijen, where you can see Blue flame near by a one kilometers wide turquoise colored lake. This trip start at 1 am as you need to climb up to the 2,799 meters height before #sunrise. If you cannot go up there on time you will not see the blue flame. For me, it’s quite hard to walk up to the mountain because of its slope (also, I’m not really work out person). But don’t worry, there is a service taxi (as in my picture no. 3) all the way up and down if you prefer more comfortable way than walking. However, I have to warn you that it’s not just going up, you have to going down in the carter (no taxi available) around 700 meters under rocks road. Believe me, it’s worth. #merrychristmas

For this superb view, it start at 3 am you will go to Kingkong view point by Jeep. Then, climb up to the mountain waiting for the #sunrise . I assure you, it’s worth the wait! #merrychristmas

📍Bromo Mountain, Indonesia Woke up at 2am just to wait for the sun rise. But trust me it was worth it. Even though it was freezing at that time, but still, it’s nothing compare to what i had to witness. We were on the top of the mountain, how great is our world.
