Kapaa travel guide and discussion

The location is perfectly situated halfway between North Beach and South Pointe. However, the area lacks charming little shops and streets that tourists typically enjoy. The hotel’s buffet restaurant feels underwhelming for the price, but it’s a nice facility with great views, making it convenient for a simple breakfast without having to search for a place to eat each morning. The pool area was excellent—especially the jacuzzi, which offers stunning ocean views at night and is a major highlight. The beach in front isn’t suitable for swimming, but it’s pleasant for morning and evening walks.

#easytravelpost The Kalalau Trail (22 km RT, 11 km each way) runs the Na Pali cliff edge from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Valley, the mossy cliff forest belt at the Hanakapiai stream crossing (4 km) and again in the valley — Thuidium on the cliff fern ledges, Metzgeria on the guava scrub. Day-hike permit 20 USD/person (state DLNR, online 30 days ahead, Ke'e–Hanakapiai only), camping permit 20 USD/night for beyond Hanakapiai. Lihue→Ke'e 1.5 hrs drive, parking 10 USD/vehicle at Ha'ena SP (reserve slot). May–Sep driest; Oct–Apr flash-flood. I rented in Lihue (50 USD), booked the 06:00 parking + day permit 20 USD, started Ke'e 07:00. The moss is the Na Pali cliff forest: Thuidium on the cliff-ledge ferns 1 cm, Racomitrium on the Hanakapiai boulder 1 cm, 13°C in March, a Kauai elepaio, the Pacific 300 m below the narrow ledge. I reached Hanakapiai beach 09:30, moss on the warning sign black-green, ate a 12 USD Hanalei bakery poke bowl, watched a goat scramble the cliff. Mistake: I crossed Hanakapiai stream at 10:00 after rain — thigh-deep, swept to the hip; turn at the sign if brown, morning-cross only. Another: the 20 USD permit is exact-name, DLNR app or print, no cash at Ke'e — phone dies, you're turned back. Would you pay 20 USD permit + 10 USD parking for the Ke'e→Hanakapiai mossy Na Pali cliff-forest day-hike, or skip Kalalau and do the free Kuilau Ridge–Moalepe trail (same forest, no permit) instead?
