Kobe: If You Haven't Had Kobe Beef, You Haven't Really Been to Kobe.
Come on, you absolutely must try the beef here‼️‼️‼️
Highly recommending this top-tier Kobe beef restaurant, where eating steak is like watching a live SHOW!
For this trip to Kobe, I looked up a highly-rated spot in advance: "KOBE BEEF STEAK HOUSE GRAN KOBE (神戸牛ステーキ「グラン神戸」三宮店)".
➤ It’s conveniently located between JR Motomachi and Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya stations. If you’re worried about getting lost, I recommend walking from Moriya Shoten towards JR Sannomiya Station. Shortly after passing Kyukyoryuchi-Daimarumae Station, you'll see it on your left.
➤ The restaurant is on the second floor. Most people instinctively take the stairs, but if you're with family and young kids, be sure to walk past the bottom of the stairs—there’s an elevator on the left! I didn't know this at first and foolishly carried the stroller all the way up. Only when leaving did we realize there's an elevator, an elevator, an elevator! This is so important for families.
➤ Upon entering, you'll see three teppanyaki counters, but the total seating is actually quite limited. If you don't want to make a wasted trip, be sure to make a reservation in advance. In addition to the Wind God and Thunder God paintings on the wall behind the main counter, there’s a wine cellar on the left with nearly 60 kinds of beverages, including wine, spirits, sake, and shochu. One of the compartments even displays the official certificate issued by Kobe City, proving that the beef quality is officially recognized, so you know you're getting the real deal.
➤ I ordered the small-sized [A5 Grade Kobe Beef "Tasting Comparison Set"], which allows you to taste two of the most premium and classic cuts of Kobe beef simultaneously: 60g of Sirloin (サーロイン) and 50g of Filet (フィレ). It costs 18,700 JPY, roughly 3,700 TWD. You can experience the rich, fatty aroma of the sirloin alongside the ultimate tenderness of the filet.
➤ Before officially cooking the Kobe beef, the chef will ask for your preferred doneness and serve 5 kinds of sauces/condiments: salt, yuzu pepper, wasabi, mustard, special steak sauce, and ponzu.
➤ The meal includes an appetizer, soup, salad, grilled vegetables, A5 Wagyu, white rice, and miso soup. It is rounded off with dessert and a beverage.
➤ Honestly, I couldn't remember the name of every single dish. Even though the staff introduced them very warmly and carefully, apart from the delicious taste and amazing plating, every dish had a memorable highlight. For instance:
◎ Appetizers: Sesame tofu, yam beef aspic (initially mistook the yam for taro), and chawanmushi (steamed egg custard).
◎ Soup: I couldn't quite tell what was in it, but what was amazing was that even though it was a cold soup, it was smooth and not greasy at all.
◎ Salad: The yellow dressing poured over the lettuce was actually made from carrots! I never thought carrots could be used as a dressing; the taste matched surprisingly well, it was awesome!
◎ Grilled Vegetables: Onion, shiitake mushrooms, eggplant, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and tofu. The shiitake mushrooms were still juicy after grilling, which was impressive. The eggplant was paired with Japanese miso, and the tofu was topped with toasted garlic chips.
◎ A5 Kobe Beef: Although there were only 5 pieces of beef, they were all very thick. After grilling to the requested doneness, the chef poured hot oil over the meat to seal in the juices? It felt like a magic show, leaving both kids and adults in awe.
◎ White Rice: Perfectly glossy and super delicious. Although rice in Japan is generally great, this restaurant's rice was exceptionally good. It was served with miso soup.
◎ Dessert & Drink: Ice cream for dessert, and coffee or black tea (hot or cold) for the drink.
➤ Even though it was a meal, the process felt more like watching a SHOW right at your table. Plus, the service was impeccable. The staff were friendly, polite, and handled any requests immediately without showing a hint of impatience. I originally thought such a refined meal wouldn't be filling, but surprisingly, everyone was full and highly satisfied.
➤ I sincerely recommend this to everyone: if you come to Kobe, you must eat Wagyu. If you don't have a go-to list yet, please make sure to add this restaurant. It is genuinely delicious, and we will definitely visit again~
