For a three-day trip with kids, these 8 hidden gems offer a leisurely pace that you won't want to leave.
A three-day trip with kids, slowing down the pace, really brought out the charm of many places. These eight spots aren't mainstream tourist hotspots, but they're quiet, rustic, and worth exploring at a leisurely pace. I've written down my honest impressions, some surprising and some discouraging; use them as needed.
01 Yulin City | Shaanxi
Wave Valley is the kind of place that will leave you speechless at first glance. Layers of red sandstone are stacked like the pages of an old book turned over by the earth. Walking along the boardwalk with kids isn't tiring, but it's best to arrive before 9 am when the light shines at an angle, highlighting the textures. At midday, the colors will appear washed out, making photos prone to overexposure. In the afternoon, head to Red Stone Gorge. The gorge isn't long, and the stream flows at your feet, perfect for kids to splash and play in. Remember to bring an extra pair of sandals.
📍There are stalls selling local millet jelly at the scenic area exit. It's five yuan a bowl, sweet and sour, and most kids will love it.
⚠️Some areas within Wave Valley are not open to the public and are fenced off with barbed wire. Don't climb over them to find a good spot for photos; the sand is loose and unsafe. If you still have energy the next day, you can drive along the Yellow River in Jiaxian County. You don't need to enter the scenic area; there are viewing platforms along the roadside to see the Yellow River make a large bend here. It's windy, so bring a windproof jacket for your children.
02 Ma'anshan City | Anhui
Caishiji is more suitable for families than I imagined because its core activity is a two-part "boat ride + mountain climb," preventing children from having to walk all the time.
🚄It's about a 20-minute taxi ride from Ma'anshan East Railway Station. The ticket includes the ferry. First, take the boat to the vicinity of Sanyuan Cave, then walk up a gentle slope. The river breeze is refreshing, and it's not stuffy even in summer.
📍The platform in front of Taibai Tower offers excellent views, including the Yangtze River Bridge. Children can easily spend half an hour pointing and counting cargo ships.
🍜Outside the scenic area, there's an old shop called "Caishiji Tea Dried Tofu." The freshly made tea dried tofu is chewy, perfect for a small snack.
⚠️On weekend afternoons, there are many tour groups, so it's recommended to enter the park before 10 AM, otherwise the boardwalk will be crowded. Walking through the entire scenic area takes about three hours. Don't bring a stroller; there are quite a few steps, but there are pavilions every so often where you can rest.
03 Dongying City|Shandong
The most worthwhile part of the Yellow River Estuary isn't any particular spot, but the feeling of "the world suddenly widening." If you're bringing children, don't rush. Take the park's electric shuttle bus to the observation tower, then walk along the wooden boardwalk deeper into the wetlands.
⏰After 3 PM, birds are active, and you can see flocks of cormorants and herons. The kids wouldn't let go of their binoculars.
📍At the end of the boardwalk, there's a wide expanse of water where the Yellow River and the Bohai Sea meet. The colors are clearly layered, and seeing it in person is even more breathtaking than in photos.
⚠️There are many mosquitoes, so long pants and mosquito repellent are essential. Don't wear sandals. Food options are limited in the scenic area, so it's recommended to bring your own snacks. Afterwards, buy a bag of locally grown winter dates at the entrance; they're crisp and sweet, and kids can eat them while walking. Keep the entire tour within four hours; any longer and the children will get sleepy.
04 Laibin City | Guangxi
Panwangjie and Lianhua Mountain in Dayao Mountain can be done on the same day, but the order matters. Start with Panwangjie, as its trails are well-maintained with many gentle slopes, perfect for expending energy. Then head to Lianhua Mountain in the afternoon; it's not high, but the steps are slightly steep, allowing you to reach the summit before the children run out of energy.
⏰There's fog in the mountains in the early morning, which dissipates around 10 am, revealing the smoke rising from the Yao villages—the most picturesque moment of the day.
📍At the entrance to Panwangjie Scenic Area, there are Yao aunties selling bamboo rice; the aroma of preserved meat mixed with glutinous rice is irresistible, and a child can easily eat a whole bamboo tube.
⚠️It's windy at the top of Lianhua Mountain, so bring a light jacket for your child. The drive between the two scenic areas is about half an hour. Hiring a local minibus round trip costs about 150 yuan. The driver will stop at a viewpoint along the way for you to take panoramic photos. If your child's stamina is average, just visiting Panwangjie will be enough; don't try to do too much.
05 Jilin
Songhua Lake and Wusong Island have two completely different atmospheres, but both are suitable for a slow-paced stay. In summer, if you go to Songhua Lake, book a lakeside resort. The view from your window is of the water; children can throw stones and play in the shallows, while adults can sit on the shore and enjoy the breeze—an afternoon will pass by in no time.
⏰After 5:30 pm, a thin mist rises over the lake as the boats return to port, creating an incredibly soft light.
📍There's a small fish restaurant near Fengman Wharf that serves tender, boneless stewed lake crucian carp, perfect for children. Wusong Island is best visited in winter. If it's not winter, I don't recommend making a special trip; it's bare and not very interesting. ⚠️Songhua Lake offers both large boats and speedboats. Choose the large boat if you have children; it's more stable, while the speedboat's bumpy ride can frighten them. Choose accommodation within the scenic area for a quiet night where you can hear the water.
06 Shangqiu City | Henan
Mangdang Mountain is an easily underestimated place. It's actually a group of Han Dynasty cultural relics, making a visit with children feel more like a "treasure hunt."
📍The Liang Xiaowang Mausoleum passage is long and cool; in summer, it feels like having natural air conditioning. Children will be particularly curious about the stone doors and drainage ditches. Tell them some stories beforehand to pique their interest.
⏰After 2 PM, there are fewer tourists, and the tomb chamber is so quiet you can hear dripping water, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
🍜At the foot of the mountain, there are farmhouse restaurants selling steamed locust flowers. When in season, they are sweet and soft, and children will enjoy them as a dessert.
⚠️The steps inside the Han Dynasty tombs are slippery; always hold your children's hands and make sure they wear non-slip shoes. Half a day is enough to explore the entire scenic area. Afterward, you can visit the nearby Mangshan Town. There are vendors selling handmade sugar paintings on the old street; it costs five yuan for one turn, and kids will have a blast.
07 Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan
Dali is best experienced at a leisurely pace; three days is just right. Dedicate the first day to Xizhou Ancient Town. Don't just walk the main street; turn into the alleys near the corner towers. You'll see Bai grandmothers doing tie-dyeing at their doorsteps. For ten yuan, your child can try making a small piece of cloth, and take the finished product home.
🍜Buy freshly baked Xizhou crispy cakes; the sweet rose filling is more appealing to children than the savory one. On the second day, visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple. Don't rush into the temple; first, take photos of the reflections at the Three Pagodas Reflection Park. ⏰The water is calmest before 10 am. In the afternoon, take a boat trip around Erhai Lake to Nanzhao Island. After arriving on the island, a walk around it only takes forty minutes. It can be windy on the island, so make sure your children wear hats.
⚠️When renting bicycles along Erhai Lake, check the brakes, especially for family bikes, which are prone to problems. If the children get tired, skip a section and spend an afternoon at a cafe by Erhai Lake, watching the clouds and daydreaming – a perfect way to experience Dali.
08 Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou
Libo Zhangjiang is the kind of place where the water is "unbelievably clear." With children, you basically don't need a plan; just follow the water.
📍Xiaoqikong Ancient Bridge is the iconic starting point, but don't get stuck at the bridgehead taking photos. Walk further in to Laya Waterfall; the spray will excite the children.
⏰Enter the park at 8:30 AM to avoid crowds. You can wade slowly in the water forest section; the water only reaches your calves, cool but not icy. Remember to wear water shoes.
🍜Outside the scenic area, there are stalls selling freshly fried small fish skewers for ten yuan for three skewers. They're crispy and delicious; the children will eat them one after another.
⚠️The boardwalk at Wolongtan is slippery, so don't let children run around. If you have enough time, you can stay overnight in Libo County and have Zhangjiang grilled fish at the food street in the evening. It's mildly spicy, and paired with a bowl of bayberry soup, it's satisfying for both adults and children. The entire scenic area takes about four hours to walk around, so strollers are not suitable; a baby carrier is recommended.
When traveling with children, slow and steady wins the race. Of these eight places, I like Dali and Libo the most. One is perfect for relaxing, and the other is perfect for playing in the water. Which ones have you been to? Or do you have any hidden gems for family-friendly towns? Share them in the comments!
