The sunlight slants through the mist, creating rainbows in photos. Shaoshan tourist area is well-known, but don’t just focus on the main spots. The country roads around it are more relaxing. After 5:30 PM, the crowds thin out. On August evenings, the water ripples in the breeze. Walk around the ancient-style street. The lights reflect on the water, more beautiful than daytime. It’s best to arrive after 5 PM. Explore the water city’s outskirts first, then walk along the riverbank when the lights come on. Songshan Shaolin needs no introduction, but a reminder: the visitor center at Shaolin Temple entrance is still some distance from the real mountain gate. The shuttle costs 25 yuan. If you don’t want to pay, walk 15 minutes. There’s plenty of shade along the way. ⚠️ Shaolin martial arts shows are held four times daily. The 11 AM show is the most crowded. The altitude is 3,200 meters, so walking fast makes you short of breath. Take it slow. The best photo spot is the hillside behind the Princess Wencheng statue.
