Lorne beach is actually just beside the great ocean road memorial arch. it is within walking distance just a small slope down to the beach and you will arrive at your destination rather easily. the beach looks good and nice , perfect for some sun tanning in fact. love the sand and the sky as well as the colors of the water it is just so relaxing and calming. feels like you can meditate here or even do some self reflection. would recommend visiting here and take some nice pictures as it will turn out great and beautiful.

Although it isn’t a very large attraction, it offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, where the winding Great Ocean Road hugs the cliffs before meeting the endless blue ocean. Planning a Great Ocean Road self-drive adventure? Our journey started bright and early after collecting our rental car from Melbourne Airport at 7:30am, and by the end of the day, we had experienced breathtaking coastal views, wildlife encounters, and one of the most scenic drives in Australia. Here’s our Day 1 half day itinerary that you can easily follow! 🚗 Stop 1: Breakfast at Pond Café, Torquay 📍 Pond Café, Torquay ⏰ About 1.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne Airport. After collecting our rental car, we headed straight to Torquay for breakfast before beginning the Great Ocean Road. We kept it simple with toast and coffee, which was the perfect way to fuel up before a long day of driving. Sometimes, that’s all you need before an exciting road trip! 📸 Stop 2: Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch No Great Ocean Road trip is complete without stopping at the iconic Memorial Arch. There are free parking spaces nearby, making it easy to pull over for photos. Although it’s one of the most popular landmarks along the route, the stop is quick and definitely worth it for your first Great Ocean Road photo. 🌊 Stop 3: Teddy’s Lookout This was one of my favourite viewpoints of the day. From Teddy’s Lookout, you’ll get a panoramic view where the winding Great Ocean Road meets the coastline below. It’s one of those places where photos simply don’t do the scenery justice. Definitely worth adding to your itinerary. 🦘 Stop 4: Kennett River Wildlife Spotting If you’re hoping to see Australian wildlife in their natural habitat, don’t skip Kennett River. Keep your eyes on the eucalyptus trees—you may spot wild koalas sleeping high above! We were lucky enough to see several kangaroos before the drizzle became heavier. We also spotted parrots around the area, making this one of the most memorable stops of our drive. It truly felt like Australia’s wildlife came to us. 🐟 Stop 5: Lunch at Apollo Bay By lunchtime, we arrived at beautiful Apollo Bay. We treated ourselves to fresh seafood and classic fish & chips, spending around AUD50 for two people. After a morning of driving, enjoying a meal while overlooking the coastal town was the perfect reward. ⏰ How Long Does This Route Take? Although the driving distance isn’t extremely long, we spent around half a day completing this section of the Great Ocean Road. With scenic viewpoints, wildlife stops, photo opportunities, and lunch, it’s best not to rush. Taking your time is all part of the experience. 💡 Travel Tips ✔ Start early to make the most of the day. ✔ Bring an umbrella or waterproof jacket—the weather changes quickly, especially during winter. ✔ Roads can become slippery after rain and include plenty of winding bends, so drive cautiously. ✔ There are limited public toilets along this stretch. We found a portable toilet at Kennett River. It was relatively new and clean but quite dark and damp inside, so it’s worth planning your restroom stops ahead of time. ✔ Keep a camera ready—you never know when wildlife might appear! 💭 Would I Recommend This Drive? Absolutely! 🌊🚗 The Great Ocean Road is much more than simply driving from one destination to another. It’s about slowing down, stopping whenever a beautiful view catches your eye, discovering wildlife in the wild, and enjoying the journey just as much as the destination. This first half-day drive became one of the highlights of our Melbourne trip, and I’d happily do it again. For our one day in Melbourne, we booked a One Day Tour through Trip.com for about 850-1,200 THB/person (depending on the season). Let me tell you, it's absolutely worth it because you don't have to rent a car or drive. Just enjoy the long ride, take a nap, and wake up to million-dollar views 😂 We stayed around the CBD and walked over to catch the 07:45 AM bus at the Melbourne Marriott Hotel (270 Queen St). The bus was right on time. I highly recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early and keeping an eye out for the bus number on the front, or just ask the drivers, as there are many different tour companies picking up tourists in the morning. As soon as we left the city, the scenery began to change from skyscrapers to green pastures, sheep farms, and cattle ranches. It was so relaxing to look at... but honestly, I fell asleep before we even made it out of the city lol 😴 Every stop had amazing views: 🏖️ Anglesea River The first stop to stretch our legs, breathe in the crisp cool air, and snap a few relaxing photos by the water. It was the perfect way to wake up from our bus nap 😂 🌊 Split Point Lighthouse The iconic white lighthouse that many recognize. Every angle makes for a gorgeous photo. It was a little windy, but the vibe was incredible. 🪖 Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch The ultimate landmark photo op! If you didn't take a picture here, did you even go to the Great Ocean Road? 🏝️ Lorne Beach A lovely little coastal town with bright blue water and a super laid-back atmosphere. I could have easily just chilled there all day. 🍽️ Apollo Bay Time for lunch! We stopped by the Apollo Bay Seafood Cafe, and it was packed! Don't spend too much time wandering around—find a spot to eat right away, otherwise, you'll be stuck waiting for a table 😅 🐨 A little bonus along the way Our guide took us to spot some wild koalas leisurely hugging eucalyptus trees. Seeing them in their natural habitat was incredibly cute. But if you want a really close and clear look, I'd suggest visiting a zoo (I have a separate review for that!) 😆 Then came the absolute highlight of the day! 🤩 🌊 Port Campbell National Park The scenery just kept getting more epic. The towering cliffs against the vibrant blue sea were simply breathtaking. 📸 Twelve Apostles It is so much more beautiful in person than in the pictures! I could have stood there admiring it forever. Super windy, but 100% worth it. It’s the kind of view that makes you realize exactly why people travel from all over the world to see it. ⚓ Loch Ard Gorge Another absolute favorite of mine. The rugged cliffs, emerald-green water, and the intriguing shipwreck history give this spot a truly unique charm. On the ride back, everyone on the bus was completely wiped out. We slept the entire way back to Melbourne 😂 In summary, for 1 day in Melbourne: a comfortable bus ride covering all the top spots—the ocean, lighthouses, koalas, cliffs, and world-class landmarks. It's a definite "must-visit at least once" experience. You’ll definitely come back with enough photos to fill a whole album 📸✨ Make sure to wear comfortable sneakers, and don't forget to pack some water and snacks for the bus ride. Each location offered breathtaking views and showcased the beauty of Victoria’s coastline. Day 4: Warrnambool We stayed in Warrnambool and visited Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The historic site provided interesting insights into Australia’s maritime history and offered beautiful coastal views. Day 5: Port Fairy and Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve We explored the charming town of Port Fairy before visiting Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve. During our visit, we saw a variety of native Australian wildlife, including emus, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and several bird species. Day 6: Geelong and AFL On our final day, we drove to Geelong to watch an AFL match.
