Hongcun Village Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
The ancient charm of Huizhou, the beauty of Hongcun
In the ancient villages of southern Anhui, Hongcun is undoubtedly the most famous and influential one. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with a long ancient charm, revealing a strong artistic atmosphere everywhere. Walking into Hongcun is like walking into an ancient dream.
The stone road is winding and winding, and on both sides are the well-arranged Huizhou-style buildings, with white walls and black tiles, and every place exudes the charm of history. The residents here are hospitable, they will tell stories about Hongcun, as if they have traveled back to the old times.
In Hongcun, the most iconic sign is Nanhu Lake at the entrance of the village. The lake is like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding Huizhou-style buildings and the distant mountains. When there is sunlight, the lake is golden ripples, which is breathtakingly beautiful; in the rainy day, it is a charming landscape painting.
In addition to the scenery of Nanhu, the Moon Marsh shaped like a crescent is also a great attraction. Every tourist who comes to Hongcun will take a commemorative photo here.
As the New Year approaches, Hongcun also has many folk customs. Holding a lantern and shuttling through the ancient village, the strong New Year atmosphere lights up the streets and alleys.
In a place of absolute devotion, I dreamt not of Huizhou
In Huizhou, what I remember most is Hongcun. This is not my first time in Hongcun, but the last time I was here was in 2012. Yes, this visit is a return to the old place after 11 years. I still vaguely remember the scenery here, remember the photos taken on the Nanhu Bridge, which I used as my profile picture on the school network for a while. I remember the photos left by the moon marsh, and the Hui-style buildings with pink walls and black tiles, which bring me back to that green university era~
Once again in Hongcun, retracing the path I once walked, the boy of that year has finally grown up~
.
Here are a few small things I recommend doing in Hongcun
1⃣️Take a photo of the beautiful scenery of the Hui-style architecture reflected in the water of the Moon Marsh
2⃣️Have a pot of tea in Hongcun, don't miss the top ten famous tea Huangshan Maofeng
3⃣️If you can go in November-December, go on Wednesday, free admission, save 100
4⃣️Go to the Tiantang Restaurant for a bowl of local chicken soup, it's very fresh
5⃣️Take a photo of the persimmon tree in the autumn scenery of Hongcun, everything goes well
6⃣️Go to Nanhu Academy, feel the spirit of this place
7⃣️Go to eat stinky mandarin fish, chestnut roasted chicken, hairy tofu, feel the Hui cuisine
8⃣️Stay next to Hongcun, sleep in the Hui-style architecture under the stars
9⃣️Go to the nearby Tachuan, Lucun, Xidi for a turn, it's beautiful
🔟Go to the Hongcun post office to buy a postcard, send it to your future self
.

Country in the painting - Hongcun
November is the most beautiful season in Hongcun. This year the weather is relatively warm, so the autumn colors in Ta Chuan are not strong enough. It takes more than 2 hours to get to North Huangshan from Hangzhou. It takes an hour to get to Hongcun by taxi. Stay in a homestay in the scenic area, which is cheap and good. Take a rest and stroll around the street, and have Huizhou cuisine for dinner. The night view of Yuezhao is recommended. Visit the scenic spots in the morning of the second day, check out at noon, and head straight to Huangshan...
How long would you stay in such a beautiful village
Hongcun, known as the 'village in Chinese painting', is quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, a typical example of Huizhou architecture.
~
Beautiful natural scenery: Hongcun is surrounded by water systems, such as Nanhu and Yuezhao, making it a village like in a painting. You can stroll in the ancient village, enjoy the natural scenery of Hongcun, and enjoy the quiet rural atmosphere.
~
Local gourmet food: Hongcun also offers a rich food experience. You can taste local Huizhou cuisine and special snacks, such as Huizhou stewed pigeon, Yi County tripe, Huizhou beef soup, etc. These delicacies will add more wonderful memories to your trip.

Xidi Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Huangshan/Yellow Mountain, Anhui, China
Getting There - Speed train to Huangshan Bei (North) station or fly to the Huangshan Airport. Then taxi or Didi to your hotel.
Attractions - Take a leisurely walk down Tunxi Old Street and enjoy the local cuisine, or visit one of the many restaurants or bars. FFFFF sandwich cafe has the best jaffles in town. Or visit Yungpu or Yungpi scenic area of Huangshan South scenic area (Yellow Mountain) via shuttle bus and then cable car up the mountain. We left our luggage at a local cafe and our luggage was well looked after. You can also visit the hot spring scenic area near the Huangshan South scenic area. If you enjoy visiting ancient villages, Hongcun and Xidi are worth visiting.
Hotels - Shanshui Boutique Hotel 山水间喜新恋旧 is a Japanese style hotel with Sushi restaurany and friendly, and helpful English speaking receptionist , Xiao Xi, on the shopping street and about 300m from Tunxi Ancient street. We also stayed at the Hongcun Scenic Hotel inside the Hongcun Scenic area. You can also stay on the mountain in Yungpi or Behai hotel, but it is quite a walk to get there, so pack lightly if you decide to stay on the mountain. There is also a nice hotel at the foot of Yungpu cable car area, but I don't know the name of the hotel.
Food & Restaurants - Too many in the area to single one out, many ranging from Korean, Japanese, street food to local Chinese cuisine.
Shopping - Local trinkets, tea, clothes and jewellery, depending on your taste.#newyearadventure
Xidi Ancient Village | This once-forgotten place is the distant land we yearn for
Xidi Ancient Village is located to the east of Yi County in Anhui Province, within the Huangshan Scenic Area of Yi County, Anhui Province. Covering an area of nearly 13 hectares, the village has a history of over 950 years and currently has 3 ancestral halls and 1 archway from the 14th to the 19th century, as well as 224 ancient residential buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Xidi Village has preserved the typical style of ancient Ming and Qing villages to this day, earning it the nickname 'a living museum of ancient residences'.
Entering the village, you are greeted by a tall archway, and as you walk along the main road by the lake, the ancient waterwheel turns slowly and heavily. A pond of clear water reflects the black-tiled and white-walled Hui-style architecture, perfectly blending with the golden rapeseed flowers in front of the doors, presenting a beautiful and enchanting Jiangnan ink painting. Along the way, there are many students and artists painting en plein air, each focused on their brushwork, capturing these beautiful scenes on canvas...
Compared to the bustling Hongcun, Xidi feels more authentic and simple, with a much lower degree of commercialization. The village has one main street, which is a commercial street, but beyond that, most of the inhabitants are locals and there are quite a few guesthouses. Walking through the narrow alleys and lanes, you can look up to see tall horse-head walls and white walls and green tiles covered with moss, adorned with festive and auspicious red lanterns🏮. Here, you will forget the passage of time and only feel that the years are peaceful...
If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, Xidi is a great place to visit, and it won't be overcrowded even on holidays. Walking on the bluestone-paved roads through the alleys, you can see these pink walls and black tiles that have witnessed a thousand years of historical changes; in the evening, buy a pot of locally brewed rice wine, sit by the window of your room for a drink, and watch as the red lanterns on the street light up one by one, enjoying the utmost comfort.
Main attractions of Xidi:
Hu Wenguang Archway, Zhuimu Hall, Duyi Court, Jing'ai Hall, Zoumalou, Kuanggu Zhai, Ruiyu Court, Dujing Hall, Taoli Garden, West Garden, East Garden, Dunren Hall, Lufu Hall, Qingyun Xuan, Yingfu Hall, Yanggao Hall, Shangde Hall, Dafu Residence, Diji Hall, etc.
Recommended sightseeing route:
Zoumalou, Mingjing Lake, Hu Wenguang Archway, Ruiyu Court, Zhuimu Hall, West Garden, East Garden, Hu's Ancestral Hall, Gula Bridge.
Best photography spots:
Walking to the right along Mingjing Lake, you can see a large waterwheel and rapeseed fields, with the time-worn Ming and Qing buildings opposite, the red couplets on the door lintels against the white walls, and a large expanse of golden rapeseed flowers at the door, which are very photogenic. In addition, each alley in Xidi has its own characteristics, and it's quite atmospheric for portrait photography, so give it a try!
Transportation tips:
The ancient villages in southern Anhui are quite scattered, so it's best to drive there. Alternatively, now that the Hangzhou-Huangshan high-speed train is in operation, you can take the high-speed train to Huangshan North and then rent a car or charter one. Xidi Ancient Village is not very large, and a general tour of 3.4 hours is enough. Of course, if you have time, you can stay in the scenic area, taste the local cuisine, learn about the local customs, and also see the beautiful night scenery🌃!
Xidi Ancient Village

Featured attractions:
* Rural landscapes such as seas of rapeseed flowers, strolling through the ancient village is like accidentally entering a rural landscape painting
* Xidi Ancient Village has less commercial atmosphere than Wuyuan in Jiangxi, and there are relatively fewer tourists. Many small alleys in the ancient village are very quiet, giving a serene feeling of Jiangnan
Visiting tips:
* Xidi Ancient Village in spring is rainy, but with frequent showers, it is recommended to carry an umbrella. If it rains, the scenery of Xidi Ancient Village will be even more charming
* When visiting Xidi Ancient Village, you can stroll around the ancient village, admire the ancient architecture and rural scenery,
* If time allows, you can plan to spend half a day to a day in Xidi Ancient Village to experience the tranquil rural charm
In the ancient village, the recommended delicacy is stinky tofu, which is a kind of food that smells a bit stinky but tastes very delicious. It is sold in the scenic area for 15 RMB
Misty rain in Huizhou, walking through Xidi ancient town in the rain
The drizzle adds a poetic touch to the journey through Xidi.
The ancient town is as tranquil as an ink painting in the rain, with houses, stone paths, and raindrops intertwining.
Although Xidi has become commercialized, its original ecological atmosphere remains. Strolling along the creek behind the town, listening to the rain, one can feel the quietude of the ancient town.
The ancient viewing platform is a must-visit spot, overlooking the village in the misty rain like a painting. After entering the scenic area, walk straight along the creek on the far right to see the steps leading to the viewing platform.
Then there's wandering through the alleys off the main street, strolling in the original residential alleys. These alleys are narrow and deep, flanked by well-arranged houses, with ancient lanterns hanging on the door lintels, revealing traces of the years.
Taste Wang Yitiao's wontons with chopped pepper sauce, delicious in flavor.
tips: Until March 31, 2024, there is no admission fee every Wednesday, for the Huizhou Yellow Tourism Mini Program.

March / April are the best times to see the bright yellow fields of rapeseed flowers surrounding villages in Anhui - and Lucun is one of those villages you can explore to enjoy an escape into nature.
From Shanghai, you can take a high speed train to Huangshan North Train Station, which is only around 2.5-3 hours. Then, to reach Lucun Village, you can either take a bus from Huangshan North or hire a driver for the day. We decided to hire a driver for a day, at 350 RMB per day, to take us around a number of villages in the area.
Lucun is located near Hongcun Village, so you could easily schedule in a visit to at least two or three villages in one day if you’re pressed for time. Lucun is one of the smaller villages, charming and tranquil, and is said to be around 1,000 years old. while strolling through, we saw locals simply getting about their day prepping meals, washing clothes or heading out into the fields to work. The surrounding areas was beautiful - with bright yellow fields surrounding the immediate area around the village, and huge rolling hills in the distance.

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) I regret not discovering the beautiful sea of flowers in this niche ancient village earlier!

Recommendations for autumn travel destinations, experience the romance of nature!
As autumn arrives, the Duoba Gully Poplar Gorge in Dunhuang becomes a golden ocean. The leaves of the poplar trees turn from green to yellow, decorating the gorge like a poem. The poplar forest in October contrasts with the reeds, and together with the distant mountains and deserts, they present a magnificent view. The afterglow of the sunset covers the earth, and the entire poplar forest is golden and breathtaking.
Every year from October to November is a good time to appreciate ginkgo in Qinglian Temple in Jincheng. The pair of thousand-year-old ginkgo trees there are now covered with yellow leaves. Walking among them or sitting quietly drinking tea and enjoying the autumn, you can feel the charm of nature and the joy of life. The 6000-year-old ginkgo tree in Zhidi Dai Temple makes people sigh at the brevity of life. We are just dust blown by the wind in six thousand years, fortunate to spend an autumn day with it.
Tachuan is known as one of the three major autumn colors in the country and the most beautiful place in southern Anhui in autumn. In autumn, the leaves of the wubai trees turn from green to yellow and then to red, colorful. Coupled with the well-arranged Huizhou-style houses, it forms a charming rural landscape.
Wuyuan has a history of 600 years and is rated as one of the most beautiful ancient villages in China. The green terraces, golden rice waves, and joy of harvest form a unique "sun-drying autumn" scene, decorating the village like a poem. The worldly atmosphere and joy of harvest in autumn bloom here.
The branches of the wubai trees in Nanjing are fiery red, the ginkgo leaves are golden all over the ground, and they are intertwined with the green willows in the blue waves of Xuanwu Lake to form a beautiful scene. Walking in the ginkgo forest on the cool mountain covered with a golden carpet, you will deeply feel the meaning of the name "Jinling".
Changbai Mountain is the ideal place to pursue a brilliant autumn day. Here is the most perfect and pure primitive ecology: bright red maple trees, tall birch forests, dark green fir trees and colorful forests surround the holy mountain and lake. Here, you will realize all the romantic and beautiful fantasies about autumn in nature.
Early winter in Tagawa: The autumn colors have faded, but the tranquility and beauty remain
When people talk about Tagawa, they always think of its picturesque autumn. However, I was a bit late this year and missed the spectacular view of red leaves all over the village. Even so, I still felt the unique charm of early winter in Tagawa.
Driving into Tagawa, the fields and distant mountains along the way are breathtaking. Although the red leaves are no longer in full bloom, they still exude a unique beauty against the backdrop of early winter. It's a kind of subtle and tranquil beauty, more restrained and quiet compared to the prosperity of summer and the harvest of autumn.
Walking into Tagawa village, I followed the stone path, feeling the weight of history under my feet. The Huizhou-style buildings on both sides of the road still retain their original appearance, with white walls and black tiles, horse-head walls looking up, as if telling an ancient story. And those ancient trees standing by the road have witnessed the changes in Tagawa.
Walking on the ridge, I slowed down to savor the early winter atmosphere here. It's a fragrance of soil mixed with the scent of rice, making me feel a close contact with nature. And those farmers who are working are interpreting their love and persistence for this land with their sweat.
In the early winter of Tagawa, I seem to have found a quiet place of my own. There is no hustle and bustle of the city, only the rare tranquility and peace. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath of the air here, and felt the breath of early winter jumping on the tip of my nose. It's a fresh and quiet taste, making me feel a kind of spiritual purification.
Although I missed the autumn colors of Tagawa, I found the tranquility and beauty of early winter here. It's a subtle and restrained beauty, making me feel a harmonious coexistence with nature. And those people who live here are interpreting their love and persistence for this land with their ordinary and simple life.
Early winter in Tagawa, although it does not have the colorful colors of autumn, it has a quiet and restrained beauty. The local customs, historical culture, and natural scenery here all make people linger. Perhaps it is because of the tranquility and peace here that I feel my soul has truly relaxed and purified.
Here, I am willing to slow down and savor this tranquility and beauty of early winter. I want to record the bits and pieces of beauty here with my words and lens and share them with more people. I hope you also have the opportunity to come here and feel the beauty of harmonious coexistence with nature.
Perhaps some people will regret missing the autumn colors of Tagawa. But I want to say that early winter in Tagawa also has its unique charm. As long as you carefully discover and feel, you will definitely find the beauty that belongs to you here.
In the early winter of Tagawa, let's feel this tranquility and beauty together, live in harmony with nature, and let the soul truly relax and purify. Perhaps in this process, you will find that life should be so simple and beautiful.
Finally, I want to summarize my trip to Tagawa with a sentence: 'Missing the autumn of Tagawa is regrettable, but experiencing the early winter of Tagawa is beautiful.' I hope you also have the opportunity to come here and feel this beauty.

Nanping, an ancient village in Huizhou, has probably all originated from several TV dramas in modern times. 80% of the shots in 'Chrysanthemum Bean' were completed in Ye's Ancestral Hall (Xuyi Hall). And all the indoor scenes in the 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' were filmed in Ye's branch hall next door.
Compared with the heavily commercialized Hongcun, Nanping is still inhabited by many locals, but like many rural areas in China, the village is mostly left-behind elderly people. They guard the ancestral homes left by their ancestors, work in this picturesque landscape, remember the merits of their ancestors in their hearts, but cannot continue the glory of their ancestors.
Nanping Ancient Town: A Hidden Gem of Huizhou Villages
Nanping Ancient Town: A Hidden Gem of Huizhou Villages
Among the many ancient towns in Anhui, Nanping Ancient Town is like an unpolished sparkling pearl. It is located in Biyang Town, Yi County, Huangshan City, and has a history of thousands of years and a grand complex of ancient buildings, yet it is often overlooked by many tourists due to the fame of Hongcun. As such, Nanping Ancient Town has maintained its unique tranquility and simplicity, becoming a little-known secret place.
Wandering through the ancient alleys of Nanping Ancient Town is like entering a tunnel of time. There are no noisy crowds or loud voices, only the heartbeat of the buildings and the breath of nature. The ancient Ming and Qing buildings stand quietly, with each brick and tile telling the vicissitudes of history. Especially the eight well-preserved ancestral halls, such as the Ye Family Ancestral Hall and the Li Family Ancestral Hall, are known as the 'Museum of Ancient Chinese Ancestral Hall Architecture', with their exquisite carvings and grand scale, showcasing the unique charm of Hui-style architecture.
The beauty of Nanping Ancient Town is also poetic and picturesque. Surrounded by mountains, the distant forests are clearly visible, as if they were a fine ink painting. Especially on rainy days, the ancient town is shrouded in a mysterious and quiet atmosphere. The ancient buildings, baptized by rain, show even more historical charm, and the distant mountains are shrouded in mist due to the watering of rain and dew, like a fairyland.
In addition to ancient buildings and beautiful scenery, Nanping Ancient Town also offers a rich cultural experience. The rooftop of the 'Bushi Kiss Moon' Folklore Building is an excellent spot to overlook the entire ancient town, while the 'Yongchun Local Cuisine Restaurant' is a great place to taste authentic Huizhou food. Dishes such as stir-fried eggs with wujiapi, braised small fish, and pork cooked with dried mustard greens are unforgettable.
Nanping Ancient Town, a place full of historical heritage and natural beauty. Although it is not as well-known as Hongcun, it has its own unique charm and style. If you long to escape the hustle and bustle and find a quiet secret place, then Nanping Ancient Town is worth a visit to experience its unique tranquility and beauty.
Nanping Ancient Town: Time stands still, with a deep and lasting charm
In a quiet corner of Huangshan City lies an ancient town, Nanping. The secluded paths and bluestone-paved streets seem to make time pause here. Nanping Ancient Town is neither noisy nor showy, yet it exudes a unique tranquility and charm.
Wandering through the alleys of the ancient town is like stepping into a tunnel of time. The old buildings are serene and dignified, with their grey tiles and white walls revealing the traces of years gone by, telling tales of past legends. Each wooden door, each stone archway, is a witness to time, silently narrating the bits and pieces of yesteryear.
The charm of Nanping lies not only in its ancient architecture but also in the rich atmosphere of life it embodies. In the town, the aroma from snack stalls, the serenity of quaint teahouses, and the labor in traditional handicraft workshops are all beautiful imprints left by the passage of time. A cup of rice wine, a bite of delicious food, allows one to taste the charm of the ancient town while feeling the flow of time.
Nanping Ancient Town is not ostentatiously prosperous, but it has its own unique charm. Perhaps it doesn't have those noisy commercial streets, but it possesses its own peace and ease. When you come here, why not slow down and feel the tranquility of the ancient town, savor the sediment of time. Maybe, on this ancient land, you will find a touch of peace deep in your heart.

A town known as the "domestic film and television village" | Nanping Village
Nanping Village has nearly three hundred ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the village is full of ancient charm, small lanes, winding paths leading to secluded spots.
🌻There are 36 wells and 72 lanes in the village. On a central axis line of more than 200 meters from the head of the village to the end, there are still eight large and small ancestral halls, which is unique in the province.
-
📍Address: At the foot of Nanping Mountain, about 4 kilometers southwest of Yi County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province.
🚗Travel strategy:
1 🚄High-speed rail to Huangshan North, there is a bus to Hongcun, every half an hour, the fare is 30 yuan.
2🚘Taxi costs about 240 yuan.
3✈The plane is to Huangshan Tunxi International Airport.
4 🚗If you drive by yourself, take the provincial road S218 and navigate to Nanping Village.
5 Take a direct bus to Nanping at the Yi County Bus Station, but there are few buses, and the journey takes about 0.5 hours; you can also take a bus to Xibu Township and get off at the entrance of Nanping Village, and walk 1 kilometer to get there.
-
🕙Opening hours: The ancient village is open all day. The opening hours of the small scenic spots inside the ancient village are roughly around 7:00-17:30.
🌟Highlights: Nanping Village has a deep historical and cultural heritage, and the most distinctive building is the ancestral hall group. It is also known as the film and television village. Many famous movies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Ju Dou have been filmed here. The "Xu Zhi Hall" of the Ye Clan in Nanping Village is a 2,000-square-meter ancient ancestral hall with a double-eave roof and a grand and spacious layout. The wall in front of the ancestral hall stands tall, the gate is tall, and a pair of large stone drums that are taller than a person are very delicately carved. The branch halls and family halls in Nanping Village were mostly built by officials and wealthy people. It's worth taking a slow stroll. In the famous Ye Clan Ancestral Hall, 80% of the shots in the movie "Ju Dou" directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li in 1989 were filmed here, and it still retains its original appearance at the time of filming.
📌Small Tips: When visiting Nanping Ancient Village, you can check in the filming location of the movie. It is best for girls to wear ancient costumes, which feels very special when taking pictures.
Food recommendation:
Ju Dou Restaurant, in the autumn of 1989, the movie Ju Dou directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li was filmed here, and I really like to eat here. The wall of Ju Dou Restaurant still hangs a photo with Gong Li that year.
🥬Hui cuisine emphasizes food supplement, good at roasting, stewing, steaming, less stir-frying, heavy oil, heavy color, heavy firework, good taste.
🍒Although the ingredients are simple, the most common farmhouse dishes retain the true taste of the food, which is very delicious.
🌶The classic Hui dishes represent stinky mandarin fish, roasted loofah, roasted beans, and bamboo shoots, all of which are delicious😋
