Planning a safari in Kruger? My biggest recommendation is to stay inside the park. It completely changes the experience and gives you far more opportunities to spot wildlife. 📍 How to get there The easiest way is to fly into Nelspruit (Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport) or Skukuza Airport, then rent a car. Kruger is one of the best national parks in the world for a self drive safari, with excellent roads and clear signage, making it easy to explore at your own pace. 🏕️ Why stay inside the park? · You can leave as soon as the gates open, when wildlife is most active. · No long daily drives from outside the park. · You can relax between game drives instead of commuting. · Many camps overlook rivers or waterholes where animals regularly appear, even while you’re having breakfast. 🦓 Which camps should you choose? If it’s your first visit, I recommend combining 2 or 3 camps. 🐆 Best chance of seeing leopards · Lower Sabie · Skukuza Both camps sit along the Sabie River, one of Kruger’s richest wildlife areas. 🦁 Best for lions · Satara The surrounding grasslands are famous for large lion prides and excellent predator sightings. 🐘 Best for elephants and diverse wildlife · Lower Sabie · Skukuza · Crocodile Bridge These southern camps offer some of the highest wildlife densities in the park. 🦒 For a quieter experience · Olifants · Letaba · Shingwedzi Fewer vehicles, beautiful scenery, and a more remote safari atmosphere. 📅 How many days? I’d recommend at least 4 to 5 days. Every game drive is different, and wildlife sightings depend on patience and luck. Spending several days greatly increases your chances of seeing the Big Five. 💡 Extra tips · Book accommodation several months in advance, especially during the dry season. · Download offline maps before entering the park. · Drive slowly. The best sightings often happen when you’re least expecting them. · Stop at waterholes, especially during the middle of the day when animals come to drink. · Don’t try to cover too much distance. Those who want to go on a safari (game drive) can choose from Cape Town and Kruger National Park. For us, we chose to fly to Johannesburg (the ticket price is very cheap) and then drive to Manyeleti game reserve, which is next to Kruger National Park. Wildlife can be reached all the time, there is no fence. The game drive activity is organized by the accommodation by a game ranger who will take us on a real jungle ride! Both at sunset and sunrise, they will take us to see wildlife that we have seen in documentaries offroad. Of course, many people want to see the BIG5 or the five great wildlife of Africa (lions, leopards, African elephants, African buffaloes, and rhinos), but unfortunately, we only saw 4 (missing the leopard). They said that lions and leopards do not get along, but the area we went to is the habitat of a lion pride, so we did not see any leopards. But just seeing them was a great experience, especially the baby animals that are so cute and shy. Oh! And when you see this, don't think the weather is hot because it's actually very cold. Especially from dusk until sunrise, it's very cold. Don't forget to bring warm clothing. Another thing is that the accommodation doesn't have a fence, so you'll really get close to the wild animals. Seeing wild animals in nature is really special.

Kruger Shalati Train Hotel is located on the Selati Bridge above the Sabie River in Kruger, South Africa. The location alone is a winner, as guests staying in the refurbished steam train wake up to the real animal kingdom. The hotel has a total of 31 rooms, including 24 carriage rooms and 7 bridge house rooms, all of which are decorated with African native designs and handmade. #easytravelpost The Three Rondavels viewpoint sits on the R532 inside the Motlatse (Blyde River) Canyon Provincial Nature Reserve, about 20 km north of Bourke's Luck Potholes. I drove from Hazyview via the R532 (90 min, tar all the way, 2×4 fine), parked at the fenced viewpoint (no separate fee for the Rondavels themselves — the reserve access is folded into the Panorama Route stops; Bourke's Luck is R150 foreigners / R75 residents, card works there, cash backup wise). The mossy bit isn't on the viewpoint deck — it's the 400 m fenced side-path east along the rim where the quartzite lip stays damp and Fissidens and Bryum grow on the rock, with Adiantum ferns dripping over the edge. I went in May (autumn, low rain) — 17°C at 8 a.m., the canyon floor 400 m below still holding morning mist. Wore trail-runners; the rim path is paved and railed, but the rock lip beside the rail is slick with moss and algae after any drizzle. The Rondavels themselves (Magabolies, Mogoladikwe, Maqwasha, Mapjaneng) are dolomite-and-quartzite pillars, grass-topped, and the moss clumps at their base only show from the side path, not the main deck. Mistake: I arrived at 11 a.m. on a Saturday — tour buses from Graskop filled the car park, the deck was a selfie scrum. Be there at 7:15 a.m. when the gate opens (7 a.m.), or 4:30 p.m. for warm light. Second mistake: I figured "free viewpoint = no cash needed" — true for the Rondavels, but the toilet attendant expects a 5–10 ZAR tip and the curio stalls are cash-only. Third: I leaned on the rail for a wide-angle — the rail is fine, but one panel near the east end is loose; a ranger waved me back. Don't test the infrastructure. Buy at the stall: a 25 ZAR melktert slice, not the 120 ZAR Panorama Route café combo. Gear: a 200 ZAR packable shell from the Graskop shops — canyon fog rolls in fast. Local rule: no drones (reserve ban, rangers at Bourke's Luck radio through), no climbing the fence for "the better angle" (500 m drop, 1,000 ZAR fine), no picking the aloe on the rim. The moss on the quartzite lip is the canyon's only soft edge — don't sit on it, sit on the rail-side rock. Opinion: The Rondavels get shot in 5 minutes and everyone leaves; the mossy rim walk is the 30-minute half nobody sells. For the final episode of this self-driving Kruger series, we head north to Olifants — and this is one of the places that impressed me the most. 🌅🌿 The big attraction here isn’t only the wildlife. It’s the landscape. Olifants Camp sits high above the Olifants River, with spectacular views over the surrounding bushveld. You can sit at the viewpoint and watch elephants, hippos and other animals moving through the landscape far below. 🐘🦛 🚗 H1-4 — SATARA → OLIFANTS Coming from Satara, the H1-4 is the main road towards Olifants. Take your time — the route passes through beautiful landscapes and offers plenty of opportunities to stop for wildlife. 🐘 FOLLOW THE OLIFANTS RIVER Once you get closer to Olifants, the river becomes the star of the show. Water attracts an incredible variety of animals, especially during the dry season. Look carefully for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and antelopes, while keeping an eye on the surrounding trees and hills for predators. 🦁🐆 🌅 OLIFANTS VIEWPOINT One of the best things about staying around Olifants is simply enjoying the views. The camp’s elevated position gives you an incredible panorama over the river and surrounding wilderness. There is something very special about sitting quietly with the African landscape stretching endlessly in front of you. No safari vehicle is even necessary for a few minutes — just sit, watch and listen. ❤️ 🛣️ ROADS WORTH EXPLORING Besides the H1-4, you can explore roads around the Olifants area such as the S44 and S93, depending on your itinerary and current road conditions. 💡 MY TIP: Don’t make Olifants just a stopover between Satara and the north. Give yourself time here. The combination of wildlife, river and elevated viewpoints makes this area feel completely different from Satara or Lower Sabie. After Lower Sabie, we head to a completely different part of Kruger. Berg-en-Dal, in the south-west of the park, is surrounded by rocky hills and beautiful bushveld — and it has one major attraction for safari lovers: RHINOS! 🦏🔥 🚗 THE H3 — SKUKUZA → BERG-EN-DAL If you’re coming from Skukuza, the H3 is the main road to take. The landscape gradually changes as you head towards the granite hills around Berg-en-Dal, making this drive very different from the river landscapes of Lower Sabie. 🦏 LOOK FOR RHINOS Berg-en-Dal is particularly known for white rhinos, and the surrounding area is also home to black rhinos. Keep your eyes on open grassy areas and along the road edges. Rhinos can appear surprisingly close to the road — but always give them plenty of space! 🐆 LEOPARD COUNTRY This is also a great area for leopard sightings. SANParks notes that leopards are regularly seen around Berg-en-Dal, including near the camp’s dam. So when you’re driving slowly through the bush, don’t just look for large animals — check the trees and shaded areas carefully. 👀 🐕 AND MAYBE A WILD DOG! African wild dogs are also found in the area. They are much rarer to encounter, which makes a sighting incredibly special. If you see a pack, stop, switch off the engine and enjoy the moment! 🌿 EXPLORE THE SMALLER ROADS The S110 towards Malelane Gate and the nearby gravel roads such as the S120 offer a different experience from the main H3. The rocky landscape and surrounding vegetation make this area particularly interesting for slow self-driving. 💡 MY TIP: Berg-en-Dal is not necessarily about seeing the largest number of animals. It’s about looking carefully. The rocky terrain can hide rhinos, leopards and smaller species surprisingly well. After exploring the area around Skukuza, it’s time to head south towards Lower Sabie, one of the most exciting areas of Kruger National Park for a self-drive safari. 🌿🐘 The H4-1 road from Skukuza to Lower Sabie, following the Sabie River, is one of the routes I would definitely recommend. The combination of river, open areas and dense bush creates fantastic opportunities to spot wildlife. 👀 🐘 ELEPHANTS & HIPPOS The Sabie River is a major attraction, especially around water. You can find elephants coming to drink, hippos relaxing in the water and crocodiles waiting along the banks. Sometimes several species are visible at the same time! 🦁 LIONS & LEOPARDS This is also an area where you have a chance of encountering predators. Keep your eyes on the road edges, riverbanks and shady areas under the trees. A lion can be surprisingly difficult to see until someone suddenly points it out! 🦁 🦒 GIRAFFES, ZEBRAS & ANTELOPES Even when the big cats are hiding, the landscape is full of life. Giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeest and buffalo can appear at any moment. 🥪 NKUHLU PICNIC SITE A great stop along the route is Nkuhlu Picnic Site, where you can take a break and enjoy the surroundings. Remember that in Kruger you should only leave your vehicle in designated areas. 🌅 SUNSET DAM Near Lower Sabie, Sunset Dam is another worthwhile stop. It is particularly interesting for observing hippos, crocodiles and birds, and it’s a beautiful place to slow down and simply watch the river. 🚙 MY SELF-DRIVE TIP: Don’t rush this road. The journey between Skukuza and Lower Sabie isn’t just about reaching the camp — the road itself is the safari. Drive slowly, scan both sides and stop whenever something catches your attention. And that’s what makes driving your own car in Kruger so special: you decide where to stop, how long to stay and what you want to discover. After discovering how incredible it is to drive your own car through Kruger National Park, let’s start with one of the best bases for a safari: Skukuza! 🌿 Skukuza is not only the largest camp in Kruger — its location makes it a fantastic starting point for exploring several roads where you have excellent chances of seeing wildlife. 🐘🦒🦓 🚗 1️⃣ H4-1 — Skukuza → Lower Sabie This is one of the roads I would prioritize. It follows the Sabie River, an important water source for wildlife. Keep your eyes open for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, buffalo and lions. 🦁🐘 🌿 2️⃣ S65 — N’waswitshaka Road A smaller gravel road south of Skukuza, perfect if you want a quieter safari away from the main routes. The surrounding bush can hide predators, so drive slowly and scan both sides constantly. 👀 🐆 3️⃣ H1-1 — Skukuza → Tshokwane This main road crosses a beautiful section of southern Kruger and is particularly interesting for spotting larger animals. Don’t rush — some of the best sightings can happen just after a bend or near water. 🌳 4️⃣ S1 — Skukuza → Phabeni Gate A great option if you’re entering or leaving through Phabeni. The landscape changes as you move towards the western side of the park, making the drive interesting even when animals aren’t immediately visible. 💡 My biggest tip: don’t simply follow the cars! If everyone is stopped, there is probably something interesting to see — but sometimes the best sighting is when you are completely alone on a quiet road. Turn off the engine, stay silent and look carefully. 👀 And remember: in Kruger, the road itself is part of the safari. If you’re visiting Kruger National Park, don’t miss the spectacular Panorama Route just outside the park! 🚗✨ It’s one of the best road trips in South Africa, combining dramatic mountains, enormous viewpoints, waterfalls and lush valleys. One of the highlights is Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. The views from Three Rondavels are absolutely incredible, with huge rock formations overlooking the canyon and the Blyde Dam. 😍 Along the route, you can also stop at God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and several beautiful waterfalls such as Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls. Each stop offers a completely different landscape. 💡 My tip: Plan a full day for the route and start early. Take your time at the viewpoints rather than simply driving from one stop to another — the scenery is the real attraction! This beach was stunning. The sand was soft and spotless, and the water was crystal clear. Although it was quite crowded, we could always find a spot to lay our towels and set up our tent. A vendor sold fruit around the beach, and there was also someone renting out pedalos with slides, which we tried for 20 euros an hour—a price I thought was reasonable. While there wasn’t a dedicated beach bar, there were plenty of places along the nearby pavement to grab food and drinks. Do note, though—the sand was scorching, so make sure to wear sandals when walking on it.
