From the far bank I looked back: Frías clings to La Muela rock, castle on top, "hanging houses" (casas colgadas) jutting over the Ebro gorge. Climbed the village lane (cobbled, 10 min) to the castle keep — ticket €2 at the tourist office, 10:30–14 / 16–20 in summer.Inside: 13th-century Romanesque capitals, a small arms room, and a rooftop where the Obarenes mountains and the Ebro meander unfold. Then I descended to the riverside lane below the hanging houses — a 1.5 km loop on fisherman's paths, €0, no signs but obvious underfoot. Mistake: I arrived at 13:30 and the tourist office was closed for siesta, so I couldn't get the castle key until 16 — plan the castle for after 16 or before 13. Another mistake: swimming in the Ebro here — a local shouted it's got crayfish traps and a strong undertow at the bridge pillars. Worth it? A four-hour bus ride from Madrid. Burgos was truly amazing. The Santa Maria Arch stands out against the Spanish sunshine and blue sky, and the third-largest cathedral in Spain features a beautiful stained-glass cloister. The cathedral is a must-see! Be sure to go inside. Each chapel and painting is worth a visit! In Madrid, I was on guard against pickpockets and purse snatchers from the airport, but here I was able to enjoy a leisurely stroll. I saw the statue of El Cid, ate a delicious Spanish omelette sandwich, and enjoyed a pleasant walk along the riverside lined with horse chestnut trees. I felt like half a day wasn't enough. Apparently, the city has flooded in the past, and there were lines marking the extent of the flooding, which was very educational. The first snow I saw on the winter Camino Although it fell at night and I didn't actually see it fall, it was so pretty. The timing was right for the section where I had to cross the mountain, so I was lucky that I could see the beautiful snow-covered mountains as a bonus.
