Perched on the horse's head is an observation deck offering great views of both the statue of the Khan himself and the vast surrounding landscape. A lift whisks tourists right up to the deck. ✅ The ground floor houses a museum exploring the life and reign of Genghis Khan, alongside souvenir shops and a post office where you can send postcards worldwide. 💪 The monument, which happens to be the world's largest equestrian statue, is surrounded by "Genghis Khan's army." To be honest, it wasn't particularly impressive when we visited, but perhaps they've added to it since then. 🔥 A visit here is an absolute must—it's unforgettable. My wife and I went on a 3-day tour to Kharkhorin. Our guide was Moon and our driver was Timujin. Both were extremely accommodating, and we couldn’t have asked for a better pair. Despite the gas shortages, Timujin made sure we had enough fuel so our journey wouldn’t be interrupted. Moon was a friendly and knowledgeable guide, and we liked him so much that we now consider him a friend. On the first day, we visited a museum and monasteries, learning a lot about Mongolia’s culture and history. We also had the chance to sleep in a ger and enjoy traditional Mongolian food. On the second day, we explored cairns, visited more sites, and even rode camels in the semi-Gobi. The night sky, along with the sunrises and sunsets, were absolutely breathtaking. Finally, they dropped us back at our hotel. The trip itself was incredible, but Moon and Timujin truly made it unforgettable.

We spent seven amazing days touring Central Mongolia with our guide, Usgal, and our driver, Bazaraa, and they were simply the perfect team. They were cheerful, funny, and extremely professional, each handling their role with clarity and working together flawlessly to make our trip smooth and enjoyable. We were particularly touched by their thoughtfulness, like taking us out after a rainy day to enjoy a stunning sunset. What impressed us most was their genuine enthusiasm for the journey itself. They joined in activities wholeheartedly, and their positive energy was infectious. They also made an effort to eat meals with us and share personal stories about their lives and Mongolia. These conversations enriched our understanding of the country, its people, and its culture far beyond what any guidebook could provide. Throughout the trip, we felt thoroughly cared for. Fresh water was always ready in the car after each sightseeing stop or visit to the gers. Even the long, bumpy drives became enjoyable with laughter and wildlife spotting in national parks and along the roads. Use this guide to bring down your return ticket cost from £300 or over to under £100 1️⃣ Take a Train to Erenhot: Erenhot is the border city between China and Mongolia and you can take a train there! ⭐️ Due to chinas vast railway network you can get there from anywhere but the amount of time it takes you and transfers will vary ⭐️ We went from Xian which cost £25 and just about 25 hours of our time but form Beijing is cheaper 2️⃣ Once you are in Erenhot you can find a taxi to take you over the border to Zamiin-uud. ⭐️They will charge you about £5 ⛔️ The border closes at 6 therefore you might need to wait until the next day to do so (Hotels are about £7-14 cheapest) 3️⃣ Take the train from Zamiin-uud to Ulaanbaatar ⭐️ It takes about 13 hours ⭐️ Costs about £7 ⛔️ Tickets sell out, buy online especially in peak season (August) 4️⃣ (IF 3 DOESNT WORK) ⭐️ You can find a car to take you to Ulaanbaatar for about £60 ⭐️ It is a nice drive and it’s £60 per car so save with going with others 5️⃣ Arrive in Ulaanbaatar!! Follow this guide and I’ll show you how to experience Ulaanbaatar and Terelj National park with just £25. 1️⃣ Food: ⭐️ A Mongolian meal ranges from about £1.5-5 (This is the cheapest way to do it) ⭐️ Western food is more expensive starting at £5 per meal (eg Pizzahut) but gets more expensive the more fancy it is. 2️⃣ Accommodation in Ulaanbaatar: ⭐️ You can stay at a hostel for as low as about £7 a night (eg lotus guesthouse) ⭐️ You can get relatively cheap hostels in the city Center saving on travel expenses 3️⃣ Accommodation in Terelj: You can book a yurt from £10-£26 as a budget option per night. ⭐️ Sharing a Yurt with 2 other people will bring your costs down to a range of £3.4-8.7 a night! ⭐️ Don’t book a yurt online, go to the meeting spot outside the park and ask local families if you can stay with them, that’s the cheapest way to do it. Day 1: Ulaanbaatar 1️⃣ See the Chingghis khaan statue in Ulaanbaatar. ⭐️ The statue was made so that Chingghis Is always looking down on everyone else 2️⃣ Explore the black market. The black market is Mongolias biggest market selling almost anything you can think of from clothes to equipment to furniture to decorations! ⭐️ It opens at 9am and ends at 7pm! ⭐️ The best time to go is 9:30! ⛔️ It’s fully closed on Tuesdays therefore avoid exploring Ulaanbaatar on this day 3️⃣ The soviet- Mongolian viewpoint See part of Mongolias history and friendship with the USSR and see the city from the top of a mountain! ⭐️ You can buy hand painted postcards at the top! Day 2: Terelj National park 4️⃣ Book a yurt in Terelj National park for the night! You can stay with a business or a local family ⭐️ Local families are cheaper but you need to go find them in person and ask them! ⭐️ You can take busses to a pickup point which you can then enter Terelj through bus or get driven by locals 5️⃣ Go horse riding 🏇 You can rent a horse for only 25,000-40,000 per hour (guide is an extra 20,000 per hour) ⭐️ The guide is a flat rate so if you go with more friends it’s cheaper per person ⭐️ You can ask them to take you to turtle rock and get a photo with an eagle (eagle photo only 10,000) and to take you to a monestary 6️⃣ Campfire and stars Many places will have campfires you can use, light up a campfire and watch the stars at night ⭐️ If they don’t give you enough or any firewood venture into the Forrest and find some! ⭐️ bring marshmallows, smores and a roasting stick to enjoy to the max! ⭐️ Stars are most visible when the moon isn’t visible so try to plan your trip around this Day 3: Terelj and Ulaanbatar: 7️⃣ Go on a hike ⭐️Hike around your campsite and enjoy the views and the photo opportunities ⛔️ Depending on your flight time you might want to skip this step 8️⃣ Return to Ulaanbaatar and fly out! Here are some things you can do there 1️⃣ Rent a yurt Rent a yurt in the mountains, you can do this online or come and find one in person. 💵 Budget options start from 50,000-130,000 a night 💰 Luxury options range from 330,000-550,000 2️⃣ Go Horseback riding: Rent a horse and ride through the Mongolian mountains 💵 The cost varies significantly however we paid 105,000 for 3 hours including a guide and our own horse (price for one person) ⭐️ Horse rental per hour was 25,000 + 20,000 per hour for the guide - They will likely take you to turtle rock and a monastery if you ask!! 3️⃣ Have an eagle land on your hand! Mongolia felt unlike anywhere I’d ever been. From the moment I arrived, the endless open landscapes made me realize just how small the busy cities I’d come from really were. There were no towering skylines competing for attention just rolling grasslands, distant mountains, and skies that seemed to stretch forever. I started in Ulaanbaatar, where old Buddhist temples sit surprisingly close to modern buildings. Visiting Gandan Monastery gave me a quiet introduction to the country’s culture before I headed into the countryside. The highlight of my trip was Terelj National Park. Huge granite rock formations, green valleys, and peaceful hiking trails made it easy to forget about time. I even spent a night in a traditional ger, and waking up to horses grazing outside was one of those travel moments I’ll never forget. Another place that completely amazed me was the Genghis Khan Statue Complex. I’d seen photos before, but standing beneath the massive stainless-steel statue was something else entirely. The view from the top overlooking the endless steppe was worth every step. Wanting to experience Mongolia beyond the usual tourist route, I continued south to the Gobi Desert. Watching the dunes at Khongoryn Els change color as the sun set was unforgettable. The silence out there was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. One of my favorite surprises was Khustain National Park, where I finally saw the rare Przewalski’s horses roaming freely. Seeing wildlife in such a natural setting made the whole experience feel even more special. Before leaving, I visited Kharakhorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. Walking through Erdene Zuu Monastery and learning about Mongolia’s incredible history made me appreciate the country even more. Looking back, Mongolia wasn’t about checking famous landmarks off a list. It was about slowing down, breathing fresh air, meeting incredibly welcoming people, and discovering just how beautiful simplicity can be. Terelj National Park 🌲🪨 As the closest national park to the capital, it is renowned for its unique rock formations (like the famous "Turtle Rock") and alpine forests. Mongolia is one of those places that feels completely different from anywhere else I’ve traveled. The landscapes are huge, the roads seem endless, and sometimes you can drive for hours without seeing another person. It’s wild, peaceful, and honestly a little surreal. Gobi Desert This was easily one of my favorite parts of Mongolia. The massive sand dunes at Khongoryn Els are incredible, especially around sunset. Riding a camel through the desert and spending the night in a traditional ger made the whole experience even more memorable. Orkhon Valley If you want to see the Mongolia you probably have in your head green valleys, horses, rivers, and nomadic families this is the place. The scenery is beautiful, but what I loved most was how quiet and untouched everything felt. Lake Khövsgöl The water here is unbelievably clear, surrounded by mountains and forests. After days of driving through Mongolia’s open landscapes, arriving at Khövsgöl felt like finding a completely different side of the country. Terelj National Park Not far from Ulaanbaatar, Terelj is probably one of the easiest places to experience Mongolia’s nature. The rock formations, wide valleys, and horses everywhere make it a great stop, especially if you don’t have weeks to explore the country. Ulaanbaatar I wouldn’t skip the capital either. It can feel chaotic after spending time in the countryside, but that contrast is part of what makes Mongolia interesting. Gandantegchinlen Monastery and the city’s museums are worth visiting before heading into the wilderness. For me, Mongolia isn’t really about checking famous attractions off a list. It’s about the long drives, sleeping in the middle of nowhere, meeting nomadic families, seeing horses running across endless grasslands, and realizing just how huge and empty the world can still feel.
