Shibata District travel guide and discussion

Funaoka Joshi Park (Funaoka Castle Ruins Park) Located in Miyagi Prefecture, featuring the "Slope Car" and breathtaking views. Ranked as one of Japan's "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots," it is widely considered one of the most beautiful places in the Tohoku region. Highlights of the park: · The Slope Car: A small tram that takes you up the hill through a 305-meter "Sakura Tunnel." It's a highly popular photo spot you definitely don't want to miss. Once you reach the top of the hill, you'll be treated to a panoramic view of over 1,000 cherry blossom trees, with the Shiroishi River and the snow-capped Zao Mountains in the background. · Ticket Price: 500 yen for adults (round trip). · Recommended Time: The cherry blossoms here typically bloom from early to mid-April (the exact timing may vary slightly each year). · Getting There: Take the JR Tohoku Main Line to Funaoka Station, then walk for about 15 minutes. If you're planning a trip during full bloom, it is absolutely worth it. Make sure you have plenty of space on your camera's memory cards!

I absolutely love Kurashiki; in recent years, I've visited Kurashiki in Okayama at least three or four times a year. On a trip from Kyushu to Osaka in early March, I made a special stopover in Kurashiki because a local friend told me there are gorgeous Kawazu cherry blossoms to enjoy here, too. Let's talk about the location first. Heading south from the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a thousand Kawazu cherry trees are planted along both banks of the Kurashiki River for a three-kilometer stretch from Irufune Bridge to Tsubue Bridge. This was part of the Kojima Lake Flower Corridor Project launched by the local community in 2007. The closest spot is in Mifunecho, just a five-minute walk south from the Kurashiki City Auditorium (Kurashiki Geibunkan). But if you really want to see the spectacular "thousand trees at a glance" (Hitome Senbon), you'll need to take a bus from Kurashiki Bikan to Kosedo Station, take a short walk, and then you can take in the breathtaking sea of pink flowers at the riverside park. To be honest, since they haven't been planted for that long, the trees are still relatively short. It's not quite on the same level as the "thousand trees at a glance" at Tokyo's Chidorigafuchi or Sendai's Shiroishigawa Tsutsumi Hitome Senbonzakura just yet. However, being able to admire the Kawazu cherry blossoms up close or have a picnic on the grass is still a fantastic experience. 📍Address: 465 Tsubuura, Kurashiki, Okayama 710-0036, Japan 🚗Take the No. 62 Amaki Line bus from Kurashiki Station or the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, get off at Kosedo Station, and it's just a two-minute walk from there.

Cherry blossoms everywhere, dreamy views, and the sweetest family memories. Japan’s sakura season truly hits different here. 💕🇯🇵 #Miyagi #CherryBlossom #SakuraSeason #JapanSpring #FamilyTravel

The 2026 festival runs until October 4th! (⚠️ Word is that the bloom is early this year! I recommend going as early as possible to see them at their peak.) I visited the annual Red Spider Lily (Manjushage) Festival held at Funaoka Castle Park. These photos show the conditions as of September 25th. You can enjoy 550,000 red spider lilies completely free of charge. It’s a fantastic spot for a stroll under a crisp autumn sky. 📍Location: Funaoka Castle Park 🅿️ Parking: There are several parking areas, but I recommend the one in front of the local specialty shop, Sakura no Sato. It’s a great starting point whether you're heading up to the Kannon statue or towards the lookout where the famous fir tree stands. I arrived just after 9:00 AM, but I recommend getting there as early as possible in the morning. ⚠️ Even on weekdays, it was already getting crowded by 10:00 AM. The Sannomaru parking lot (shown in the last photo 📷) is unpaved, but it’s just a short walk from there to the flower fields, so it’s a good alternative if the area in front of Sakura no Sato is full. ♿ Accessibility: Since the park is located on a hill, accessibility is not very good. I couldn't find any designated priority parking spots. While there are some paths that a wheelchair could manage, there are many stairs, making it difficult to explore the smaller side trails. However, plenty of flowers (red spider lilies and autumn crocuses) grow along the main paved walkways, so you can still enjoy the view to a reasonable degree. If you aren't very confident in your legs, I highly recommend bringing a walking stick 🪄. I saw many people using them for safety, especially on the descent. Lightweight, foldable poles from outdoor brands like Mont-bell are well-suited for these mountain paths. ⚠️ The slope car is currently closed for construction 🚧 and will not be available until Spring 2027. I wanted to go to the summit, but since it requires a 15–20 minute hike up a mountain trail, I decided to pass this time. Still, there was plenty to enjoy! ✨ Apparently, it only takes 4 minutes to reach the top by slope car ☺. It looks like it will be back in service in time for cherry blossom season. 🚾 Toilets: There are clean restrooms at Sakura no Sato. If those are crowded, the Sannomaru toilets aren't far—about a 3-minute walk. Be aware that the toilets at the summit are pit latrines and may sometimes be unavailable. ⚠️ 🌸 Sakura no Sato: You can buy local vegetables and crafts here. The vegetables are fresh and incredibly cheap! I bought bags full of potatoes, eggplants, and bell peppers, all for under 200 yen each—about half the price of a supermarket. They also have Kannon-yaki (baked treats) and "Nyan-kokeshi" (cat-shaped traditional dolls), which are fun just to look at. If you go further in past the restrooms, there is a free 🈚 rest area with air conditioning, tables, and chairs where you can take a breather. 🌲 Momi no Ki wa Nokotta (The Fir Tree Remained): This refers to a famous NHK Taiga drama based on Shugoro Yamamoto's novel. The fir tree that stood as a living witness to that history is located here. Please be sure to check it out! ✅ Pack some water, wear shoes you're used to walking in, a hat, and bug spray, and bring a walking stick if needed. Enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery! ♥

Sendai Cherry Blossom Viewing Trip: I stayed at the Monte Emmanuelle Hotel in April 2026. It had a public bath, convenient transportation, and easy access to shopping streets. The Sendai Morning Market was a five-minute walk away, with fresh sashimi and delicious rice balls. The Sendai Aquarium is definitely worth a visit; its planning and management are very thoughtful. April is cherry blossom season, and the parks near Sendai are covered in cherry blossoms—very beautiful. Funaoka, less than an hour's drive away, boasts "A Thousand Cherry Trees at a Glance," which is truly stunning and dreamlike. A fantastic cherry blossom viewing experience!

Hitome Senbonzakura is located along the Shiroishi River in Miyagi Prefecture and is one of the top-ranked spots for viewing cherry blossoms 🌸. Over 1,200 cherry trees line an 8-kilometer stretch, creating a stunning scene. The highlight is the contrast between the pink cherry blossoms and the snow-capped Zao Mountains. You can cross the pedestrian bridge from the riverside to enjoy a high-angle view of the cherry blossoms, which connects to Funaokajoshi Park. Photo taken in April 2025. Transportation 🚃 From Sendai Station, take the JR Tohoku Main Line to Funaoka Station. The journey takes approximately 35 minutes and costs 510 yen. For the trip, walk along the Shiroishi Riverbank to the railway crossing bridge. On the way back, you can take a different route.

Last spring, I chased the cherry blossoms of my life in a small town near Sendai🌸 · Starting from Sendai, in just over half an hour, you can reach the famous "Cherry Blossom Ceiling," Senbonzakura, where thousands of cherry trees bloom simultaneously along the Shiroishi River. Stretching 8 km, it looks like a pink and white springtime galaxy. ✨ And the best part: there really aren’t many people!! Compared to the crowded cherry blossom spots in Kanto and Kansai, the experience here is simply unbeatable. · 🌸 Recommended route: Funaoka Station ➡︎ Funaoka Castle Ruins Park ➡︎ Shiroishi Riverbank ➡︎ Ōgawara Station 🏯 Climb up Funaoka Castle Ruins Park for a panoramic view of the entire cherry blossom river + the snow-capped Zao Mountain Range — an instant photo masterpiece📸 👣 Stroll along the riverbank, with neatly lined cherry trees on one side and gently flowing water on the other. A breeze blowing through creates a romantic shower of cherry petals. 🚞 Check out the cherry blossom train, a vintage little train weaving through the blossoms. With just a bit of patience, you can capture stunning anime-style Japanese shots. 🍡 Enjoy local snacks During cherry blossom season, many food stalls appear, offering grilled beef tongue, dango, taiyaki, ice cream, making it a truly delightful experience to eat while enjoying the blossoms. · 🚃 Transportation Sendai ➡︎ Funaoka Station/Ōgawara Station via JR Tohoku Main Line, about 30 minutes. 🌸 The Charm of a Thousand Sakura Trees in Shibata: The Last Light at Shiroishi River 🏔️ If you're planning to visit the Tohoku region during spring, "Shibata City" in Miyagi Prefecture is a destination you absolutely must not miss! Especially the cherry blossom viewing route along the Shiroishi River, which stretches over 8 kilometers and features nearly 1,200 cherry trees blooming beautifully along the riverbank and up the hills. 📍 Highlight Check-in Spot: From Funaoka Station to the Sky Viewpoint This trip starts at Funaoka Station (easily accessible via the Tohoku Main Line from Sendai). The first destination is a walk along the river to the Shibata Sen-oh Bridge, which connects the riverbank to the path leading up to Funaoka Castle Park. Although the cherry blossoms along the river had passed their full bloom when we visited, our main goal was to capture the "Thousand Sakura Trees" or Hitome Senbonzakura paired with the snow-capped Mount Zao in the distance. ✨ Memorable Moments: The Last Light and Local Kindness Excitement arose when we accidentally fell asleep on the train, causing us to travel back and forth. By the time we reached Funaoka Station, it was already 5:20 PM! However, this "mistake" led to "beauty." We arrived at Shibata Sen-oh Bridge just in time for the last light of the day. The vanilla-colored sky contrasted with the soft pink of the cherry blossoms, creating a mesmerizing view. What impressed us even more than the scenery was the kindness of the locals. A student volunteered to guide us to the check-in spot and even took us to Funaoka Castle Ruins Park to ride the Slope Car up to see the 24-meter-tall statue of Kannon on the hilltop. From this point, we enjoyed a panoramic view of Shibata City and the Shiroishi River, ending the day with a warm heart and a sense of fulfillment despite getting lost. Tips: * For photography enthusiasts, visiting in the evening is recommended as the light is soft and romantic. The viewpoints here are divided into four main sections, all connected by walking paths (Funaoka - Ogawara).

A renowned cherry blossom spot in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan, featuring an 8-kilometer stretch of cherry trees. I was fortunate to visit in late April and witness the full bloom of cherry blossoms—a breathtaking sea of pink. Occasionally, a small train would pass by, adding to the picturesque scenery. Strolling under the cherry trees and enjoying the romantic atmosphere of falling petals was truly a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

Funaoka Castle Ruins Park is not just an old castle ruin but a magnificent cherry blossom viewing spot in Miyagi. It's a year-round relaxation destination with walking paths, historical insights, and the most stunning views from the slope car, crowned by the Kannon statue atop the hill. If you're visiting Sendai and looking for a cherry blossom spot, this is a must-visit. At the top, there are small food stalls. We tried grilled sweet potatoes and peach soft-serve ice cream, which were unexpectedly delicious. Tips: · If you want to take the tram to enjoy the view from the top, it's recommended to go before 4 PM as it operates until around that time. · The cherry blossoms here bloom slightly later than in Tokyo, usually from early to mid-April. Check the forecast in advance. · For those with a JR Pass, you can take a train from Sendai to Funaoka Station, which takes about 25-30 minutes.

Miyagi Prefecture is home to two places often referred to as "Little Kyoto." The first one is Murata Town, located in Shibata District, south of Sendai. There is no railway access, but you can reach Murata Town by taking the express bus that connects Sendai to Zao. These buses run approximately once every 1-2 hours and pass through Murata Town along the way. Miyako Bus (express bus) supports Suica cards. Besides Sendai Station, the bus also stops at Tohoku University (depending on the bus route) and Hirose-dori. It takes about 35-40 minutes from Sendai Station to reach Murata Town. The town features a terrain similar to Kyoto, with a river flowing through it, a village nestled in the valley, and mountains surrounding it like a fortress. About 2 kilometers away from the town, there is a roadside station where local agricultural products, specialties, and fruits are traded. This location also features a Pokémon manhole cover. While one side of the town resembles a small city, the area within 200 meters feels like stepping back in time with its well-preserved historical appearance. It’s as if you’ve traveled to the past via a time machine. Cars pass through the streets lined with old buildings, creating a scene reminiscent of Kawagoe. The town seems to be in the early stages of development as a tourist destination, with construction visible in some areas. Although the town is small enough to explore in about 30 minutes, the century-old traditional buildings exude a tranquil atmosphere and evoke the charm of Kyoto. Thank you for reading!

Funaoka Castle Ruins Park & Hitome Senbonzakura This year, I chose the legendary cherry blossom scenery of Tohoku! 🚶♀️Itinerary: Funaoka Station ➡️ Funaoka Castle Ruins Park ➡️ Hitome Senbonzakura ➡️ Ōgawara Station 📌【Funaoka Castle Ruins Park】 From Funaoka Station, it’s a 15-minute walk to the foot of the mountain. Before climbing, you’ll pass by several food stalls where you can grab a bite before heading up! Unfortunately, the cable car 🚡 has been discontinued due to aging, so you’ll need to walk. However, the path is lined with fully bloomed cherry blossoms, making it feel like you’re walking through a tunnel of flowers 🌸. At the summit, you’ll find the Funaoka Peace Kannon statue, a rest area, and small food shops. You can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the Shiroishi River embankment—truly healing scenery! 📌【Hitome Senbonzakura】 From the mountain, walk down to the riverside to reach the legendary cherry blossom tunnel 🌸. The most iconic scene is the moment when a train passes through the cherry blossoms 🚃✨. Many visitors gather on the "Shibata Senbon Bridge" to secure the perfect photo spot. 📌【Heading to Ōgawara Station】 Along the way, you’ll spot adorable painted stones pointing the direction 🪨. It’s about a 30-minute walk to Ōgawara Station, just in time to catch the cherry blossoms bathed in the golden glow of the sunset—truly romantic 🌇. 🚃Transportation: JR Tōhoku Main Line (Sendai ➡️ Funaoka/Ōgawara)

Sendai's Thousand Sakura Park is a great place to enjoy cherry blossoms in the suburbs of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture! 🌸It is recommended to visit here together with Shiraishikawa Ichimoku Senbonzakura, which is selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossoms in Japan!
