There is usually only one reason to go: the one-month Russian visa expires, and you have to leave the country for a day, then return to Russia to enjoy another 14 days of visa-free travel to continue your unfinished journey (this is because the airfare from St. Petersburg to Belarus is much cheaper than from European cities, so it is worth taking a detour). Dragging a suitcase that was more tired than me, the streets were sparsely populated. It was rare to see residents, so I just took some photos. It was difficult to find food, but fortunately the Narva Hotel in the city center was easy to find. The Aleksandri Suurkiriku Museum along the way was considered the largest attraction in the area. Ivangorod is a strict border zone—Estonia is literally right across the river! 😅 Russian citizens need to arrange a border pass in advance via "Gosuslugi" (State Services) or the border guard administration. The process can take up to a month, so plan ahead! 😉 The city was founded in 1492 by Ivan III as the westernmost outpost of the Russian Tsardom. 😊 My first impression: two fortresses, one river. 😻 I climbed up the fortress rampart and just froze—right on the opposite bank of the Narva River stood Hermann Castle, which is already in Estonia! 🤯 For centuries, these two rival outposts have faced each other. A Russian fortress and a European one, captured in a single frame. 😇 Actual goosebumps! 🥰 The original fortress was quite small—just 40 by 40 meters with four towers. Legend has it that its dimensions were measured using a single horse's hide, cut into one long, continuous leather strip. 😅 In 1496, the Swedes captured the fortress in just seven hours but quickly fled. After that, it was significantly expanded, taking on its final formidable shape by 1558. 😄 The territory inside is massive, featuring powerful walls up to 15 meters high, ancient towers, and stone staircases. 😺 The Assumption Church (built in 1496) is one of the oldest stone churches in the Northwest. 😇 Inside, you'll find absolute silence, dim lighting, and ancient icons. 🤩 I made my way up one of the towers. The stone stairs are steep, with steps completely worn down by centuries of footsteps. At the top, you're greeted by the wind in your face and a sweeping view of the Narva River, the Friendship Bridge, and the Tall Hermann Tower (51 meters). 😇 The View of Narva: Closer Than It Appears From up here, Estonia is right in the palm of your hand. Over the past five hundred years, this fortress has changed hands many times—from Russian to Swedish, and back to Russian. It suffered heavy damage during the war, with six of its towers blown up. 😔 Today, it's undergoing restoration. You can see a mix of ancient stonework and brand-new bricks; the fortress is truly alive. 🥰 Just two kilometers away lies the Parusinka district. In the 19th century, Baron Stieglitz established Russia's largest textile manufactory here. 😄 Nowadays, you'll find beautifully dilapidated factory buildings, an old hospital, and the Baron's striking Neo-Renaissance mansion. 😻 With its cobblestone streets, the whole area has a deeply cinematic vibe—you almost expect 19th-century factory workers in flat caps to come strolling around the corner. 😸 I spent nearly the entire day in Ivangorod.
