Ningming travel guide and discussion

Oh my! Chongzuo has been my secret "poetry scroll of the southern frontier" for 10 years! This itinerary skips the cookie-cutter influencer spots, avoids the crowds at Detian Waterfall's viewing platforms, and bypasses the "photo-op" bamboo rafts at Mingshi. Instead, it immerses you in the rhythmic breathing of the Luoyue civilization: listening to ancient Zhuang chants before the Huashan Rock Paintings, brewing a pot of Arenga sugar tea where icicles hang at Detian Waterfall, walking snowy paths on the rice paddies of Mingshi, and tracing the ink marks of Feng Zicai from 1885 in the weathered bricks of Friendship Pass... Four days and 3 nights, ¥2,100, just enough to read the entire "Chronicles of the Zuo River Basin" until it feels like your own heartbeat. ✅ Day 1 | Arrival: Awakening the secret path of the Zuo River 🚄 High-speed train to Chongzuo South Station (Second Class ¥168, Nanning East → Chongzuo South, 1h 15m) 🚗 Chartered car directly to the core area of the Huashan Rock Painting Cultural Landscape in Ningming County (45 mins, includes driver commentary) 🏨 Stay at [Balaishanju] — a Zhuang village homestay built on the hillside opposite Huashan (underfloor heating + fire pit + hand-painted "Huashan Atlas" welcome note), ¥498 per night 🌿 Afternoon: Stroll along the Zuo River trail and watch the ochre-red rock paintings "come to life" in the sunset; a village grandmother teaches you how to mix Arenga powder into a warming sugar paste (includes a small ceramic jar) 🍜 Dinner: Five-color sticky rice + sour bamboo shoot fish + Arenga wine by the fire pit (homestay includes breakfast and dinner, ¥78 per person) ✅ Day 2 | Rock paintings, waterfalls, and the heartbeat of bronze drums 🌄 Early morning: Take a bamboo raft upstream on the Zuo River (not a tourist route, but a daily commuter raft for villagers, ¥60/person) to look up at the Huashan Rock Paintings up close — an old master hums the "Frog God Ballad" in Zhuang, the echo against the rock wall sounding like a drum ⛰️ Noon: Chartered car to Detian Waterfall in Daxin County (1.5 hours), but avoid the main scenic area! Head straight to the home of an old craftsman in [Shuolong Town Old Street]: watch a bronze drum caster hammer a "frog-pattern drum face" and try your hand at making a rubbing of a bronze drum pattern (¥98, materials included) 💦 Evening: Hike the [Guichun River Icicle Trail] on the flank of Detian Waterfall (guided by a local, snow-covered stone steps, icicles like curtains), brew Arenga sugar tea in the waterfall viewing pavilion, and watch the sunset melt like gold over Vietnam's Ban Gioc Waterfall 🏨 Stay at [Detian Yunshe] — a cliffside homestay where you can fall asleep to the sound of the waterfall (underfloor heating + bronze drum-shaped bathtub), ¥528 per night ✅ Day 3 | Mingshi, rice waves, and the warp and weft of Zhuang brocade 🌾 Morning: Cycle the "Rice Snow Path" in Mingshi Rural Area (bike rental ¥25, rice stubble covered in light snow, cowbells jingling); visit Auntie Lan, an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Zhuang brocade, and learn to weave the basic "diamond warp and weft" (¥128, includes finished small square scarf) 📚 Noon: Drink oil tea at [Zuo River Academy] at the entrance of Mingshi Village and browse a photocopy of the "Chongzuo Intangible Cultural Heritage Notes" (the version with the curator's handwritten annotations) 🌉 Afternoon: Hike the [Heishui River Secret Trail] (free, guide required ¥80) and see the karst peaks reflected in the ink-jade colored river; pass by the ruins of the Qing Dynasty "Guilong Bridge" and make a rubbing as a souvenir 🏨 Stay at [Mingshi Shanyue] — a rammed-earth homestay in the middle of the rice paddies (underfloor heating + Zhuang brocade bedding), ¥488 per night ✅ Day 4 | Border pass, beacon fires, and the journey home 🇨🇳 Morning: Chartered car to Friendship Pass in Pingxiang (1.5 hours). The focus isn't just checking in, but: · Spending 10 minutes in silence before the "1885 Feng Zicai Anti-French Defense Map" inside the gate tower · Climbing the White Jade Pagoda to overlook the China-Vietnam border line winding like a silver thread · Mailing a "Friendship Pass postmarked envelope" from the old post office next to the Guandi Temple (stamped with a bilingual postmark, ¥12) 🚌 Return: Take a high-speed train from Pingxiang Station back to Nanning (¥89) to end the trip 💰 Budget breakdown (Total ¥2,099) Transportation (high-speed train + chartered car + bamboo raft + bike rental): ¥598 Accommodation (3 nights): ¥498 + ¥528 + ¥488 = ¥1,514 Tickets/Experiences (rock painting guide + bronze drum rubbing + Zhuang brocade class + Heishui River guide + postmark): ¥326 Dining (3 breakfasts, 4 main meals, includes specialty tea and wine): ¥161 ⚠️ Note: There are no ticket traps in all of Chongzuo! Huashan Rock Paintings, Mingshi Rural Area, Heishui River Trail, and Friendship Pass are all free (reservation required). This is the key to saving money! Did you know? The Arenga tree is called "Bala" in the Zhuang language — meaning "the backbone of the mountain." It doesn't compete for height, yet it has rooted itself into the karst crevices for centuries; it isn't flashy, yet its leaf sheath fibers have woven Zhuang brocade for a millennium; it isn't loud, yet its syrup has nourished generations on both sides of the Zuo River... This is the soul of Chongzuo.

the most primitive and wild scenery along the China-Vietnam border. 🌿The first time I came to Chongzuo, I was amazed by its 'landscape filter.' Unlike Guilin's delicate elegance, Chongzuo is more like an untamed natural wonderland. Rolling karst peaks are gently enveloped by rice paddies, rivers, and villages, as if stepping into a slow-moving documentary. 📍【Mingshi Scenic Area】 The Mingshi Scenic Area in the early morning was the most unforgettable scene of my trip. A thin mist slowly rose from the Guichun River, distant peaks were faintly visible, bamboo rafts gently glided across the water, and ripples spread out like silk. On both banks were lush green rice paddies and occasionally dotted Zhuang ethnic houses, their blue tile roofs gleaming softly in the sunlight. Riding a bicycle slowly along the country roads, with the sound of wind rustling through the rice fields and occasional crowing of roosters and barking of dogs, time seemed to stretch long and slow in that moment. 📍【Detian Waterfall】 As Asia's largest and the world's fourth-largest transnational waterfall, Detian Waterfall is truly breathtaking. The waterfall cascades down layers of rock walls, the water gleaming white in the sunlight, and its roar echoing through the valley. Standing on the viewing platform, you can see Vietnam on the opposite bank of the waterfall. Bamboo rafts carry tourists slowly closer to the base of the waterfall, and the mist sprays over you, instantly cooling you down. Especially during the rainy season when the water volume is abundant, the entire waterfall resembles a massive wall of water, so magnificent it makes your heart race. 📍【Huashan Rock Paintings of Zuojiang River】 If you're interested in history and culture, you definitely shouldn't miss this place. The Huashan Rock Paintings are quietly carved into steep cliffs, dating back over two thousand years. These reddish-brown human figures, either dancing or performing rituals, are both mysterious and solemn. Taking a boat ride along the river and looking up at the cliff face, you'll feel a sense of awe that transcends time, as if conversing with the ancient Luoyue people. 🍃Chongzuo's charm lies in its 'slowness.' There's no overdeveloped commercial atmosphere, no crowded masses; you can stop anywhere to daydream, gaze at a rice field, a river, or simply listen to the wind. 📌Travel Tips: ✔️Best time: April-October (waterfall volume is abundant, scenery is more spectacular) ✔️Self-driving recommended: Attractions are spread out, self-driving offers more freedom ✔️Be sure to stay one night in Mingshi Scenic Area; both morning and evening are unbelievably beautiful ✨If Guilin is a delicate landscape painting, then Chongzuo is a freely growing natural epic. Coming here isn't about checking off a list, but about surrendering yourself to the scenery.

🌊 First sound · The roar of Detian Waterfall In June, Chongzuo is 23℃. The first stop was straight to Detian Transnational Waterfall—the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, spanning China and Vietnam. Before even getting close, the sound of water arrived first—not a gentle flow, but a deep rumble of a whole wall of water crashing into a deep pool, like the earth breathing. June to August is the high-water season, with so much water that standing on the viewing platform, the mist can wet your cheeks. Riding a bamboo raft to the front of the waterfall, you can truly feel the shock of "one waterfall crossing two countries"—to the left is China’s viewing platform, to the right is the Vietnamese border post, and the sound of water connects both shores. 🚲 Second sound · The wind in Mingshi Pastoral On the second day, I went to Mingshi Pastoral—the filming location of "The Journey of Flower." Many call it "Little Guilin," but I think it has even more fairy-like charm than Guilin. The karst peaks reflect on the emerald river surface, with morning mist at dawn and sunset glow in the evening. I rented an electric bike to ride along the Heishui River, passing through rice fields and karst peaks. The rustling sound of wind through the rice ears is like someone flipping through a very thin book beside your ear. The bamboo raft is manually rowed by the boatman, who sang a few lines of mountain songs—the tune is low, but it fits perfectly in this landscape. 🎨 Third sound · The silence of Huashan Rock Paintings On the third day, I visited the Huashan Rock Paintings. A World Cultural Heritage site, these ochre rock paintings were left by the Luoyue ancestors over 2,000 years ago on the cliff. The entire cliff face is covered with images of humans, rituals, and hunting scenes, still clear after millennia of weathering. Drifting on a bamboo raft on the Ming River, the thousand-year-old frog-shaped totems on the red rock wall seem to "breathe" under the sunlight. The boatman turned off the engine, and the boat drifted on the water. The entire Zuo River was so quiet that only the sound of water hitting the boat’s side remained. People from two thousand years ago also rowed boats on this river, and their sounds have turned into silent red. 🛤️ Fourth sound · The wind at Youyiguan On the way back, I passed Youyiguan. As one of China’s nine famous passes, this gate with over 2,000 years of history remains an important channel on the China-Vietnam border. Standing on the gate tower, the wind blows from both sides—one side is China, the other is Vietnam. There is no sound in the wind, but you can feel the wind speaking. Practical information: The high-speed train from Nanning to Chongzuo takes only 1 hour. It is recommended to hire a car for sightseeing as the attractions are far apart. The high-water season at Detian Waterfall is from June to August. Summer temperatures range from 23-28℃; bring sun protection clothing and mosquito repellent.

June to August is the high water season, with so much water that standing on the viewing platform, the mist can wet your cheeks. It’s recommended to visit between 8-10 AM when the sunlight slants; you can often see double rainbows in front of the waterfall. I took a bamboo raft to the very front of the waterfall, 80 RMB per person. At that moment, you can truly feel the shock of “one waterfall crossing two countries”—to the left is China’s viewing platform, to the right is the Vietnamese border post, and the sound of water connects both shores. 🚲 Second sound · The breeze of Mingshi Tianyuan On the second day, I went to Mingshi Tianyuan—the filming location of "The Journey of Flower." Many call it “Little Guilin,” but I think it has even more fairy-like charm than Guilin. The entire cliff face is covered with images of humans, rituals, and hunting scenes, still clear after millennia of weathering. I took a slow boat tour; the boat moved slowly while the guide pointed out the patterns—this person is dancing, that one is performing a ritual, this row is a triumphant procession. Listening to the explanation, I realized that behind those “red little figures” are many stories. The boatman turned off the engine, and the boat drifted on the water. The entire Zuo River was so quiet that only the sound of water hitting the boat’s side remained. People from two thousand years ago also rowed boats on this river, and the sounds they left behind have turned into silent red. Practical information: High-speed train from Nanning to Chongzuo South Station takes 30 minutes. It’s recommended to hire a car for sightseeing as the attractions are far apart. Just follow this plan✅ 🚗 Getting around Attractions are spread out. Renting a car or hiring a private car is best for maximum flexibility. Public transport isn't very convenient, so I don't recommend relying solely on it. 📅 3-day, 2-night comfortable itinerary | No backtracking, no need to wake up early to rush Perfect for National Day travel, avoiding crowds, and leaving plenty of time for rest at noon. 🟡 Day 1 | Arrive in Chongzuo | Night tour of Taiping Ancient City ▫️ Afternoon: Arrive in Chongzuo, check in, and recharge. 👉 Stay in downtown Chongzuo for convenient dining and shopping, and proximity to Taiping Ancient City. ▫️ 6:30 PM: Dinner. Try local chicken noodles and "suanye" (pickled fruit/veg). ▫️ 7:00 PM: Explore Taiping Ancient City (free). ✅ Lights turn on at 7:00 PM! You must come at night; the illuminated ancient buildings are super photogenic. A leisurely 2-hour stroll is enough—no need to rush. You can take photos in Hanfu, watch small folk performances, and eat snacks. ▫️ 9:30 PM: Return to the hotel to rest. 💡 Tip: The ancient city is ordinary during the day; the night view is the highlight. No need to come in the afternoon and bake in the sun. 🟡 Day 2 | Detian Transnational Waterfall → Stay in Shuolong Town ▫️ 8:30 AM: Depart for Detian Transnational Waterfall (approx. 1.5 hours drive from downtown). 👉 Try to enter the park before 9:00 AM! It's crowded during National Day; going early helps you avoid the crowds and makes it easier to see rainbows. ⏰ Duration: 3–4 hours. ✅ Must-dos: 1. Take the scenic shuttle bus (a must-buy, it's a long walk to the scenic area). 2. Take an official bamboo raft to experience the waterfall mist up close—it's super refreshing. Remember to bring a raincoat/umbrella, as you will get splashed. 3. Check in at Boundary Marker No. 53 and use the observation deck for a panoramic view of the transnational waterfall. ❌ Avoid: Don't take private bamboo rafts from unlicensed roadside guides; only buy official tickets. ▫️ 1:00 PM: Lunch in Shuolong Town. Try Vietnamese chicken noodles and spring rolls for a full border flavor experience. ▫️ Afternoon: Return to the hotel for a nap!! The sun is scorching at noon during National Day; don't force yourself to tour in the heat. ▫️ Evening: Take a casual stroll around the town and have dinner. 👉 Stay in Shuolong Town; it's very close to the waterfall, making the next day's departure super easy. 🟡 Day 3 | Mingshi Scenic Area | A slow-paced pastoral landscape, then head home ▫️ 9:30 AM: 40-minute drive from Shuolong to Mingshi Scenic Area. ⏰ Duration: 3–4 hours, focusing on relaxation. ✅ Two ways to play (choose one): ▪️ Bamboo rafting: Drift along the Mingshi River, surrounded by karst peaks and rice paddies—it feels like a landscape painting (a filming location for "The Journey of Flower"). ▪️ Rent an e-scooter to ride through the rice paddies, weave through villages, check in at the Fish Scale Dam, and stop to take photos whenever you like. Great value. 💡 The light is gorgeous from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM; backlit photos look amazing. ▫️ Lunch: Farmhouse dishes like lemon duck, bamboo rice, and five-colored sticky rice. The local farmhouse flavors are excellent. ▫️ Afternoon: Relax by the river before heading home. 🏨 How to choose accommodation (by itinerary) ▪️ D1: Downtown Chongzuo | Near Taiping Ancient City, plenty of dining options, 300–400 RMB. ▪️ D2: Shuolong Town | A dozen minutes from Detian Waterfall, saves travel time, 200–350 RMB. ▪️ For a pastoral vibe: Stay at a Mingshi Scenic Area homestay. It's crowded during National Day! Try to enter Detian and Mingshi early, return to the hotel at noon to rest, and avoid the peak midday sun. A slow-paced trip is the right way to experience Chongzuo. 2. There are many scenic water areas, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, and rain gear, as the waterfalls will splash you. 3. Huashan Rock Paintings require a boat ride, and boat schedules are limited. If you want to add this to your itinerary, schedule it for the morning; afternoon tickets sell out easily. 4. In border areas, do not take photos of border facilities, and follow scenic area regulations. 5. Prices in scenic areas are high; it's more cost-effective to buy local specialties at supermarkets in the city. Chongzuo is perfect for those who want to escape the city and relax on vacation🌊 No need to rush around checking off sights. Just look at the waterfalls, rice paddies, and karst peaks, and you'll feel completely healed~

Taking kids to Guangxi. The biggest difference between this route and the standard Chongzuo route is the addition of the Guangxi sinkhole cluster. Standing on the observation deck of a sinkhole over 600 meters deep, children can understand what "deep" truly means. · Today, I am sharing the complete 5-day in-depth itinerary for the hidden gem of Chongzuo. 📅 Day 1: Meet in Nanning Meet in Nanning. Stroll through the Three Streets and Two Alleys of old Nanning to learn about the city's history. When the child heard authentic Zhuang folk songs for the first time, they asked, "Are they talking or singing?" Learning about the cultural function of Zhuang folk songs, the child understood for the first time that music is a language. At the Nanning night market, we tried Laoyou rice noodles and Luosifen (snail rice noodles). The child was curious about the smell of the Luosifen, took a sniff, then had a sip of the soup and said, "This flavor is very unique, but it's good." · 📅 Day 2: Guangxi sinkhole cluster + white-headed langurs Leye Dashiwei Sinkhole is over 600 meters deep. Standing on the observation deck looking down, the child was silent for a long time and said, "This sinkhole is much bigger than I imagined." Learning about the geological origins of sinkholes—the collapse of underground spaces formed under specific conditions in karst landscapes—the child understood for the first time how the Earth's internal forces can reshape the surface. In the afternoon, we visited the White-headed Langur Nature Reserve. With fewer than 1,000 left in the world, the child learned about the reasons for their habitat loss and asked, "If we don't protect them, will they disappear?" There was no easy answer to this question. The researcher answered earnestly, and after listening, the child fell silent. · 📅 Day 3: Detian Transnational Waterfall + Huashan Rock Paintings Detian Waterfall is a transnational waterfall on the China-Vietnam border. We drifted on a bamboo raft beneath the water curtain, with mist spraying on our faces. Rowing on the boundary river to the middle line of the China-Vietnam border, the child asked, "Is that another country on the other side?" Learning about the history and geography of the China-Vietnam border, the child stopped at a real geographical boundary for the first time to think about the concept of a nation. Ban Gioc Waterfall is quiet and deep, with few people around. The child was quiet here for a long time, saying nothing, just watching the waterfall. Huashan Rock Paintings, a World Cultural Heritage site, were left by the ancient Luoyue ancestors of the Zhuang people 2,000 years ago. The child asked, "Why did they paint them in such a high place?" It remains a mystery to this day, and research is ongoing. The child said they want to come back and study this when they grow up. · 📅 Day 4: Zhuang culture + intangible cultural heritage experience Guangxi Museum of Nationalities offers a full picture of the cultures of the Zhuang and other ethnic minorities. Zhuang brocade intangible cultural heritage experience: as a national intangible cultural heritage, the child learned about the cultural meaning of Zhuang brocade patterns and tried basic weaving by hand. The child wove a small section and asked, "Does every one of these patterns have a meaning?" The guide said: Every pattern has a story behind it; some represent a good harvest, others represent blessings. The child looked down at the section they had woven and said, "Then what does mine represent?" Luoyue culture explanation: learning about Guangxi's prehistoric civilization, the child understood for the first time that Guangxi has over 2,000 years of accumulated civilization. · 📅 Day 5: Chongzuo Ecological Park + airport drop-off Morning tour of Chongzuo Ecological Park, walking among the karst stone mountains. The child found a cluster of small plants in a rock crevice and asked, "There's no soil here, how can it grow?" Learning about the survival strategies of plants in karst landscapes, the child understood for the first time how life adapts in extreme environments. Unified airport drop-off after lunch. · On this route, the child encountered: a 600-meter-deep sinkhole, the white-headed langur (with fewer than 1,000 left globally), the China-Vietnam boundary river, and a 2,000-year-old mystery. Each of these is a gift from Guangxi, and you won't find replacements for them in other destinations. Have you heard of the Guangxi sinkhole cluster? Let's chat in the comments section.
