Before the World Cup, this shrine was bustling with many people visiting to cheer on the Japanese national soccer team! It is enshrined as the "God of Guidance," and within the grounds you can find statues of the Yatagarasu (three-legged crow), as well as various soccer-themed items such as goshuin (shrine stamps) and keychains. It's a power spot that attracts many visitors who come specifically for the goshuin!

#slowtraveling Arao (Kumamoto Prefecture, JR Kagoshima Main Line, 15 min from Omuta, ¥200) is another former coal town — the Miike Mine's sister site. The station area has a 500m "Coal Road" with 8 preserved mine-cart displays (free, 24/7) and a 1956 public bath, "Arao Sento" (¥450, 15:30–22:30, closed Wed, cash only). I arrived on a Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. — the Coal Road was empty, I read the plaques (Japanese only, but photos tell the story), then came back at 16:00 for the bath. The sento has a 45°C indoor tub, a 41°C outdoor tub (rotenburo, with a view of a concrete wall — honest, not scenic), and a cold plunge. A ¥150 Calpis water from the machine. Carried ¥2,000, spent ¥600. Mistake: going Wednesday (sento closed) — do Tue/Thu/Fri instead. Another: expecting English — the sento owner speaks dialect, point and pay. Rule: no tattoos (cover or don't go); no washing at the bath tap (use the shower stools). Opinion: Arao's sento is the coal town's last communal space — the mine closed, the carts are rusting, but the bath is still 45°C every afternoon. Discussion: when a sento outlasts the industry that built the town, is that resilience or just a hot tap that nobody knows how to turn off?

#slowtraveling Omuta (JR Kagoshima Main Line, 40 min from Kumamoto, ¥760) was Japan's coal capital — the Miike Coal Mine produced 2 million tons a year until it closed in 1997. The World Heritage site (Manda Pit) is a 15-minute bus from Omuta Station (¥210, or 25 min walk) — the brick winding tower and the 1912 concrete headframe are free to view from outside, 24/7. The on-site museum (¥300, 9:00–17:00, cash, closed Mon) has the original cage elevator and a 1930s miner's lunchbox. I went on a Friday at 9:30 — the tower was silhouetted against a grey sky, the lake (Miike Pond, 10 min walk north) was still, and a heron stood on the old coal-loading pier. The lakeside walk is a 1.5km gravel path around the pond — free, no facilities, bring water. A ¥200 sweet bun from a station convenience store (cash). Mistake: going Monday (museum closed, tower still viewable). Another: expecting a "pretty" site — this is industrial heritage, it's rusty, loud with cicadas, and emotionally heavy. Rule: don't climb the tower fence (dangerous, posted); don't swim in the pond (industrial history, water quality unknown). Opinion: Omuta's coal mine is Japan's most important World Heritage site because it tells the story of the energy that built modern Japan — and then the silence of what happens when the energy runs out. Discussion: when a coal mine becomes a tourist site, who is the audience — people who remember the black dust or people who've never seen a lump of coal?

Another amazing place explored: the water town. I made an overnight stay here on my way up from Kumamoto to Dazaifu. And it turned out one of the highlights of the trip. Getting There & Transit: My route: From Kumamoto Station, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line up to Omuta Station (~45 mins). Switch to the Nishitetsu Line right at Omuta, and it's just 15 minutes more to Yanagawa Station. It’s much more straightforward if you’re coming from Fukuoka: just head to Tenjin Station and take the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line direct to Nishitetsu-Yanagawa Station (about 50 minutes) What I Did : The Canal Cruise (Kawakudari): Hop into a flat-bottomed boat and a local boatman guides you through the town’s canal network. Mine sang traditional songs while navigating under insanely low stone bridges. Also, there's a floating shop boat midway through that sells mochi. 🍡 The Eel : The best part is that the cruise drops you off right in the historic Okinohata area—which is unagi heaven. You step right off the pier and directly into the eel restaurants. 🔥 eel restaurant : Wakamatsuya (Okinohata area) or Ganso Motoyoshiya. (Near train station) Plot twist: I didn’t manage to try either one of them. 🫢 because they were both closed on New Year's Day. So I randomly walked into Saraya Fukuryu (皿屋 福柳). It was actually pretty good—both the food and the environment! If the famous places have long queues, I would suggest trying this one instead😏 Last but not least, since it’s a one-way boat ride, the cruise companies actually run a free shuttle bus from the end point back to the station/town center. *remember to check the timetable with them when you buy your ticket. Something extra : If you're looking to stay overnight, I’d recommend Hotel New Gaea. It’s not super fancy, but it’s right near the station, very affordable, and the best part—they serve free wine in the evening! 🍷 (For a limited time, of course! 🤭) Bonus Food Tip (Besides Eel): You have to try Kurume Ramen Seiyoken (久留米ラーメン清陽軒 本店)! Their broth is so different from standard Hakata tonkotsu. It has a complex depth, an incredible layer of umami, and a slightly funkier, much richer aroma. Highly recommended! Omuta City Zoo Admission fee: ¥500 for adults/free for preschoolers Parking is cheap at ¥200 a day! There's also a bus stop 🚌 The picture book museum was right in the middle of the zoo! There was a cute solo exhibition by Nana Furuya 🦊 The lion feeding time at the zoo was impressive 🦁 There were lots of guinea pigs, and we even got to touch them! You could get up close to the squirrel monkeys, sloths, and capybaras without any barriers! The squirrel monkeys were hunting for bugs, catching them, and eating them (lol) They were so cute!! The sight of these gigantic giant snake floats, measuring approximately 10m in length, 5m in height, and weighing up to 3 tons, parading through the city while spewing smoke and fire, is truly a spectacular sight! The rumbling rhythm of the drums and the chants of "Yoi-sa! Yoiya-sa!" create a whirlwind of excitement in the venue! This traditional event, which dates back to the Edo period and continues for over 300 years, is a unique festival that combines water god worship and Gion faith. Jorinji Temple in Imayama, Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture Every year during this rainy season, the Hydrangea Festival is held. It has a set period, so it's best to check before you go! There are many blue and purple hydrangeas, and the mountain hydrangeas seen from the garden are very beautiful. Even when the hydrangeas are not in bloom, the garden is very well maintained. Miike Port, where the sunset is incredibly beautiful, was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015. This 'miraculous spectacle' can only be seen during two periods each year, in January and November. The 'Path of Light' stretches from the end of the Miike Port route, through the lock gate, and finally reaches the Miike Port Observatory, almost forming a straight line. When the sunset direction is from 0 degrees north latitude to 247 degrees east, the sunset extends straight through the center of the lock gate like a hummingbird's beak, creating a magnificent 'Path of Light'. This phenomenon lasts for about a week. Located on a quiet residential street, Taiyo Ken is by far the most unforgettable Japanese Western cuisine experience I've ever had. This seemingly modest and unassuming old Western-style diner actually harbors a deep cultural heritage of Japanese Western cuisine, offering us not only an ultimate taste experience but also an insight into the origins of this unique culinary culture. The wooden floors, tatami seating, and decorations of fishing nets and anchors all around exude the warmth of a deep-sea fisherman's home. We took our seats behind the half-open sliding doors, facing a large plate of exquisitely shaped but meaningful appetizers, which clearly marked the beginning of this Western food journey. The most breathtaking part is the restaurant's signature top-notch steak dishes. At first glance, the portion of the main course is not overwhelming, but the tender, juicy beef that bursts with a fresh and sweet aroma upon tasting instantly enlightens the diner, revealing what truly first-class steak flavor is all about! It turns out that this dish is Taiyo Ken's proud old signature, a creative dish that the owner has adapted from Europe and refined over the years to develop a unique flavor.
