The Xiong clan in Xiushui traces back to Hengtai Gong. During the Later Tang period, they moved from Jinhua in Wuzhou, Zhejiang, to the ancient city of Ningzhou at Huangtuling, over 1,100 years ago. Later, descendants of Qingya Gong and Rong Gong also settled here. After more than 800 years, the clan branched out and grew in number. Today, they live in 30 townships across the county as well as in Jing’an and Jingdezhen, with branches spreading as far as Tongcheng and Chongyang in Hubei and Pingjiang in Hunan. The Xiong clan ancestral hall in Xiushui county seat is the main hall jointly built by 36 branches of descendants from Shao Gong, the 73rd generation ancestor of the Jiangling Tang Xiong clan, including those of Qingya, Hengtai, and Rong Gong. In the 60th year of the Qianlong reign in the Qing dynasty, they began purchasing the old Chen family residence at Zhoujiajing in Tielu Alley, north corner of the county seat. The property included 14 rooms in the main building over two floors, 10 rooms in the east-west wing, and one gatehouse. The northern boundary was the ancestral hall’s outer wall near Dishuiqi Wei ancestral hall’s courtyard, the southern boundary was the main road behind Qiu ancestral hall, the eastern boundary was Lin ancestral hall, and the western boundary was Xiushui ditch. In the 10th year of the Jiaqing reign, the hall was renovated to be more dignified and beautiful. The hall has three courtyards in sequence, with 48 stone pillars standing in the main hall. The left side has several guest rooms, the right wing has four horizontal halls, and the front has a vertical archway with plaques inscribed “Yuqian Residence” and “Xiong clan ancestral hall.” This is the public ancestral property of the Xiong Shao Gong descendants in Xiushui county. The hall also owns over 70 acres of farmland scattered in Huangtianli of Gaoxiang, Jintoujiashang, and Wuduzhuxi of Taixiang. The rental income supports incense offerings, management, scholarships, and clan activities. The Xiong Shao Gong ancestral hall covers more than 2,000 square meters. It is grand in scale, facing south with three courtyards and two open spaces, 15 meters wide, 23 meters deep, and 6 meters high. The hall is located in the bustling city center and was once called “the flower of the Xiong family ancestral halls.” In September 1927, the Autumn Harvest Uprising troops were stationed in the county seat. The military flag of the First Army, First Division of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army was made in the Xiong ancestral hall. After 1952, the county grain bureau used the hall as an office. In the 1970s, due to urban construction, the front, middle, and east-facing buildings were demolished, leaving only the west wing, about 350 square meters. In March 2019, it was listed as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.

Just got back from Jiugong Mountain and turned my real experience over the past two days into a travelogue. Consider it a chance to retrace the trip with me— Going up the mountain: from the furnace into the clouds We left Wuhan on the weekend, taking the Jinggang’ao Expressway then the Xiantong Expressway. The whole trip took just over 2 hours. The road was good after exiting the highway. The last stretch was a winding mountain road with many curves but not steep, easily handled by a family car. From July to August, Jiugong Mountain offers phased free admission; all national middle and high school exam takers can enter free with their exam admission ticket and ID from June 9 to August 31, 2026. The temperature outside the car window dropped from 35℃ in Wuhan to 22℃ in the mountains. That feeling of “stepping from summer straight into spring” was the first thing my child said after getting out: “Mom, it’s so cool.” Staying by Yunzhong Lake: moving the hotel to 1,230 meters elevation We stayed at Jiugong Mountain Panorama International Hotel by Yunzhong Lake, right at the entrance to the lake. Yunzhong Lake is one of the highest mountain lakes in Central China, at about 1,230 meters elevation. The lake covers over 100 acres and is surrounded by mountains. It drizzled a little when we arrived, with mist swirling over the lake, making it look like a filtered photo. After dropping off our luggage, we took a walk on the lakeside boardwalk. It takes about 40 minutes to circle the lake. The air was so fresh it felt like breathing pure oxygen. Drinks and snacks on the mountain are much more expensive than at the base. For those driving, it’s recommended to bring your own snacks, fruit, and drinks. The summit is usually 5–8℃ cooler than the base, so it’s necessary to bring a light jacket or sun protection for kids. 1 afternoon: Tonggubao, stepping above the windmill sea of clouds After lunch, we drove up to Tonggubao—the highest peak of Jiugong Mountain at 1,583 meters elevation and the “ceiling” for watching the sunrise and sea of clouds in Central China. On the way up, we even saw a wild rabbit dart across. We drove all the way to the windmill area, where white wind turbines roared overhead. The Mufu Mountains stretched in layers to the horizon. My child was stunned for a while before saying, “Mom, how can there be more mountains than clouds?” We spent a long time gazing from Boyun Pavilion. There is a parking lot at Starlight Park on the summit, but it only has about 20 spaces. It’s easy to find no spots in the afternoon during peak season. To watch the sunrise, you need to leave around 4 AM to secure a spot. A real reminder: mountain weather changes quickly, with rain and sun alternating. When fog is thick, visibility can be less than 10 meters. Drive slowly. We encountered a sudden shower but luckily had umbrellas. 1 night: starry sky and the Milky Way Tonggubao is a famous stargazing spot in Central China with very low light pollution. Unfortunately, the clouds were thick that night, so the Milky Way didn’t fully show. Friends traveling with us said on clear nights you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye here. We’ll pick a clear night next time to catch up on this. 2 morning: Shilong Gorge, take the cable car into the canyon to play in the water The highlight of the second day was Shilong Gorge. This canyon lies west of Tonggubao, running north to south, with an elevation drop of nearly 900 meters. It’s heavily forested, and the temperature at the bottom in summer is just over 20℃, a true natural air conditioner. Important: you cannot drive into Shilong Gorge. You must take the cable car up and down. The cable car ticket office is by Yunzhong Lake, about a 5-minute drive. Our Shilong Gorge plus round-trip cable car ticket was 175 yuan per adult and 135 yuan per child. Sitting in the cable car cabin, you look down on the entire canyon, layers of green everywhere—a strong visual impact. After getting off, you have to climb a wooden ladder to reach the ticket checkpoint. Inside the canyon, you follow the stream downhill. The main spots are Tianjing Pool, Jiutian Waterfall, and Tianchi Waterfall. The kids splashed in the water and collected stones while I took photos of the waterfalls. The elders sat on the viewing platform drinking tea—everyone enjoying their own kind of fun.
