#Shengsi Islands Scenic Area Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
If you don’t like Sanya. 🌊
ESCAPE Shanghai for a weekend? This is a perfect island getaway if you are done with Sanya or just want something more tranquil. 🏝️
FOR 150 RMB, you can buy a ticket that includes a coach ride from Nanpu Bridge + 3hr ferry ride to the islands on the south east of Shanghai. Check the official WeChat account - 嵊泗客运 through which you can buy tickets for many different islands.
SHENGSI is one of these islands. It is linked to Shengshan island by a bridge - the one with the abandoned fishing village.
DO NOT expect a vibrant nightlife or any type of water activity apart from fishing. These islands are a destination for many fishing amateurs - specially in winter.
HOWEVER, you will get slow paced days, walkable distances all around the island, evening discussions by the sound of waves, amazing views and very friendly locals. 😊
ACCOMMODATION range from cheap guest houses to more high end ones with bath tubs and a view. There are no big hotel chains - which I personally liked. Everything seems to be owned by individuals.
IF YOU HAVE TIME, you can island hop and catch the ferry to the many other nearby islands. This was originally my plan but I just felt so confortable in Shengsi that I ended up staying for 4 days instead of 2.

When it comes to the hidden gem islands for summer retreat near the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai area,
there's no doubt that Shengsi Archipelago is the one.
✅Transportation
It is recommended to depart from Shanghai, choose the Shanghai (Nanpu) — Shengsi (Sijiao) bus-ferry combo ticket🎫
or take the direct ferry from Shenjiawan to Shengsi (Sijiao)⛴
✅Accommodation
There are not many homestay rooms on the island, so it is advised to book in advance.
This time we chose the Qingmu Nuan Yang Homestay.
Mainly because it's near the coastal🌊 road, which is great for a coastal walk to feel the sea breeze.
The room is also very warmly decorated, and in the morning you can be awakened by the sound of the waves and the calls of seagulls.
They also offer a seafood feast🦐.
✅Shengsi Archipelago can be divided into Shengsi main island, Huaniao Island, Gouqi Island, and Huanglong Island.
Each island has its own characteristics, and if time allows, it is recommended🦵 to visit them all.
✅Gouqi Island
The beautiful words like azure sea and blue sky🌊, sea ranch, golden beaches🏖, and quiet fishing villages on the island
all can be used to describe Gouqi Island.
Go to Dawang Beach to walk on the sand and watch the sea, enjoy the sunrise and sunset at Xiaoxitian🌅, sit quietly at the mountain-sea spectacle to listen to the waves and enjoy the view, or taste the delicious seafood.
✅Huaniao Island
The Mata line, the azure sea, winding roads, blooming flowers, every snapshot is a masterpiece📸.
Wuzhi Stone (Buddha's Hand Stone), a rock by the Beiao seaside shaped like a palm, and the road is full of flowers💐.
The Huaniao Lighthouse is the best spot to watch the island sunset, but it's quite far from the residential area, about a 1⃣5⃣-minute ride on the sightseeing bus.

The off-season Shengsi Archipelago is simply a paradise on earth
Last weekend, seizing the clear weather, I embarked on the long-awaited trip to the Shengsi Archipelago🚤☀️~ To be honest, the mood for traveling really does correlate with the weather!
When it comes to traveling in early spring, many people shake their heads, but actually, there's a little secret — that is to pick a good weather day!😉 Because dear, without the warm sun of summer, the color of the sea looks like its saturation has been turned down, plus the howling sea breeze and the bone-chilling cold, if it's not a sunny day for the trip, the experience will definitely be discounted. We actually roamed two islands this time, the first day was quite average due to the cloudy sky over the main island of Shengsi; so a little tip: for an off-season trip to Shengsi, you must choose a sunny day!🌤️
For those who yearn for the azure sea, there are not many choices in the off-season, but Dongfushan Island and Gouqi Island — will definitely satisfy you! Although the first day on the main island did not witness the dreamlike clear water, the blue dream finally came true on the second day at Gouqi Island.
I'm here to recommend some spots!😜 Personal must-visit places include: the Sea Pasture, Beichao Yang, Left Bank Road, and Dongya Cliff. Trust me, they will absolutely make you cry with their beauty.
Specifically, arrive at the main island of Shengsi at noon on the first day, rent an electric scooter in the afternoon, and rest early in the evening. The next morning, chase the sunrise at Beichao Yang, stroll leisurely along the Left Bank Road, and of course, taking photos is a must (you know, not just of the sea but also of people😂). Then head to Gouqi Island, where the east cliff is the best spot for sunbathing and sea viewing. On the way back, don't forget to pass by the Sea Pasture, it's all beautiful scenery along the way.
A warm reminder: the early mornings of early spring are not jokingly cold! We are brave little electric scooter knights, but neither a windbreaker nor a down jacket can withstand the severe cold of the morning. So, my friends, I suggest you take a taxi instead!🚗
Let me tell you secretly, the deck view on the return trip from Gouqi to Shanghai is simply intoxicating. The combination of blues and sunset is simply yyds (forever godlike)!
To sum up, if you are like me, a buddy from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, or Shanghai, you can't miss the off-season Shengsi! It's not expensive (about six or seven hundred per person), you can avoid the crowds and enjoy good weather, it's simply a cost-effective choice with off-the-charts value~ I haven't really seen the sea properly since graduating from elementary school, and this time I finally went wild with the sea again🌊💙~

Must-visit attractions:
Mount Putuo, the spiritual place of the Goddess of Mercy, stands between the sea and the sky. As dawn breaks, walking along the rippling seaside, it seems as if you can hear the sound of monks chanting softly echoing on the beach, like the melody of waves gently caressing the sand, melodious and profound.

Food Recommendations
Haitang Bay Seafood Stall
When you come to Zhoushan·Zhejiang, you must try the seafood. Their seafood is really fresh, made to order, and they have clear pricing, so you don't have to worry about being overcharged. You can eat with confidence. The garlic steamed lobster with vermicelli is my favorite - the garlic aroma is overflowing, the vermicelli is flavorful, and the lobster meat is the highlight, tender and sweet. The taste is really great!
Cape of Good Hope Seafood Stall
The taste is super awesome and the ingredients are very fresh! The stir-fried clams are so fragrant! As soon as it's served, you can smell the aroma from the pot, and the stir-frying is just perfect! It's super suitable with rice, and every clam is meaty. The signature crab is also delicious, with plump and rich crab meat, paired with fragrant scallion oil, it's simply too good to be true. Their garlic oysters are also good, with a firm and smooth texture. The vermicelli is soaked with the rich garlic-flavored soup, and one bite leaves a lasting impression!
Zhoushan·Zhejiang is not just a journey, but also a spiritual cleansing. Looking forward to your visit, to dance with the sea and resonate with the wind!

Secret get away island near Shanghai
Visited Shengsi Island which only takes a 1hour ferry from Yangshan port. Although it was winter and very windy, the island has a lot to offer. First there is probably the most beautiful monastery I’ve ever visited. And we pretty much had the place to ourself. Second was the hike to the light tower. It is an easy leisure walk with some steep steps, and the most amazing views of the sea and island nearby. We took the last ferry back at 6 pm. WARNING: the shuttle bus to get you from Yangshan port to the nearest metro line ends at 5:30 pm #chinatravel #nature #freehotelstay #falltrip
