Balhae Kingdom Ruins: A 'Chang'an of the East Sea' hidden in the Northeast, where a thousand-year-old stone lantern awaits its returnees. As soon as we stepped onto the rammed earth of the ruins, my foot kicked a piece of patterned broken brick – our guide, Old Li, bent down to pick it up, his fingertips tracing the scroll patterns. 'This is a corner piece of a palace floor tile, fired back then in imitation of Chang'an's Daming Palace. Look at this glaze, it's identical to those unearthed in Xi'an.' In the distance, the ruins of Suzaku Avenue, earthen ridges drew straight lines across the fields. 'A thousand years ago, this street was 40 meters wide, wide enough for eight chariots to run abreast.' 🏰 Chang'an's Shadow in the Earthen Ridges 'The entire city was built following the blueprint of Chang'an,' Old Li said, standing on the high platform of the palace area, pointing to the square grids beneath his feet. 'The palace city was in the north, the imperial city in the south, and there were three markets each in the east and west. Even the dimensions of the residential blocks were almost identical.' Beneath a certain field ridge, half a column base stone was exposed, its grooves still clear. 'It supported the main beams of the palace. The craftsmen were invited from Chang'an back then, and they said this 'cross tenon' structure could withstand the strong winds of the Northeast.' What was most striking was the Suzaku Gate ruins, where the remaining gate tower earth platforms stood like two silent giants. 'If you stand in the middle of the gate and look south,' Old Li gestured for us to look up, 'the distant mountains align perfectly, exactly like Chang'an City's Suzaku Gate facing Mount Zhongnan.' The wind swept across the fields, and the sound of rolling rice waves somehow resembled the hustle and bustle of the market back then. 🏮 The 'Unextinguished Fire' of the Stone Lantern Pagoda The stone lantern pagoda on the west side of the ruins is the city's brightest 'eye'. On the octagonal lantern base, the carved lotus petals still have their edges, and within the intertwining branch patterns on the lantern column, tiny chisel marks are visible. 'This is the craftsmanship of Balhae artisans, more robust than Chang'an's, with a frontier spirit.' Old Li said that this lantern pagoda used to burn continuously. 'Pine nut oil was used; it produced little smoke and was especially long-lasting.' The grooves at the base were filled with thick pine needles. 'They were blown here by the wind, as if knowing that a lamp was always lit here back then.' The setting sun shone on the stone lantern, casting eight-pointed shadows on the ground, like a blooming lotus. 🌾 The 'Dynasty Code' in the Rice Fields The rice fields surrounding the ruins are flourishing. 'This land was once the official granary,' Old Li said, pushing aside the soil at the edge of the field, revealing a curved pottery shard. 'It's a tile from the granary. Look at its curve; water would slide off very quickly when it rained, so the grain wouldn't get damp.' Wildflowers on the field ridges were a vibrant purple. 'These are called 'Mohe flowers,' and the people of Balhae loved to plant them,' Old Li said, picking one and handing it to me. 'They were the Mohe people, and they embroidered these flowers on their robes. Placed alongside Chang'an's peony patterns, they weren't inferior at all.' From the distant farmhouse, the sound of rice milling could be heard. 'It's almost identical to the sound of the granary's mill back then.' Practical Guide · Transportation: 30-minute drive from Ning'an City (take Bohai Avenue, there are ruin signs along the way, parking lot 5 RMB/day); take the bus to Bohai Town from Ning'an Bus Station, get off at the Ruins Park, walk 5 minutes. The journey takes 40 minutes, costs 3 RMB, and buses run hourly. · Best Time: July (rice fields are lush green, the stone lantern pagoda appears more ancient against the rice fields); October (rice is golden, the earthy yellow of the ruins blends with the autumn colors, suitable for capturing a sense of desolation). Avoid winter (the ruins are covered in snow, some areas are closed, and it's very windy and cold). · Must-bring: Sun hat (no shade in summer, strong UV rays); light jacket (gets cool when the wind picks up in the evening); drinking water (no shops in the scenic area, recommended to bring your own). · Hidden Gems: Find 'matching items' in the Ruins Museum (compare the broken brick fragments you found with exhibits in the museum to see if they belong to the same building); listen to Old Li sing 'Balhae tunes' (tunes passed down by local elders, said to resemble ancient court music, both desolate and expansive). As we left, harvesters were working in the rice fields, their roar startling a flock of sparrows. Looking back, the shadow of the stone lantern pagoda stretched long in the setting sun, as if waving goodbye to us. Suddenly, I understood that this city buried in the rice fields had never truly disappeared – it had transformed into rice, into wildflowers, into the sound of the wind sweeping across the fields, quietly living for a thousand years on the black soil of the Northeast. Weinan is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September–October. Take my advice and don't force it!! Don't be fooled by the "blockbuster" images of eastern Guanzhong: the perilous beauty of Huashan's sea of clouds, the red leaves of Shaohuashan, the snow-like reed catkins of Qiaochuan, the sunset over the Yellow River at Tongguan, the ancient city of Hancheng, and Shichen buns paired with Shuipen lamb soup. Weinan is a patchwork of Huashan (Huayin), Shaohuashan (Huazhou), Qiaochuan (Heyang), the Yellow River (Tongguan), ancient architecture (Hancheng), and carbs (Linwei Old Town). Visiting in September–October is a gamble on Guanzhong autumn weather: September brings the continuous, damp, and chilly "West China autumn rain," while October's National Day holiday means Huashan cable car queues that will make you question your life choices. Plus, the red leaves and reed catkins aren't at their peak, the mountains are freezing in the morning and evening but scorching at noon, and the wind by the Yellow River is strong enough to blow your hat off. 🚫 Why I advise against visiting in September–October 1️⃣ September in Weinan isn't crisp and clear; it's a triple threat of "autumn rain, fog, and slippery conditions" September in Weinan often coincides with the West China autumn rain. It's not heavy, but it's persistent, with humidity spiking to 80%–90%. Huashan, Shaohuashan, Tianliushan, Qiaoling, and Yaotou Kiln are all open-air or involve stone steps. After the rain, these steps become slippery. The Plank Walk in the Sky, the Chess Pavilion, and the Qianlong Temple plank road all turn into a "slip-resistance test." If you plan to "do Huashan in the morning, Shaohuashan in the late morning, Qiaochuan in the afternoon, and have Shuipen lamb soup in the old town at night," a single rain shower will ruin it: Huashan gets foggy and you see nothing, Shaohuashan cable car limits capacity, Qiaochuan's reeds get soaked, and the old town alleys get damp, making all your photos look gray. 2️⃣ Huashan during the National Day holiday = the "Spring Festival travel rush" of the Five Great Mountains Huashan is the soul of Weinan, but during the National Day holiday, Huashan North Station, Yuquan Temple, and the cable car stations are all packed. The West Peak cable car is 130, the North Peak cable car is 80, and queues during the holiday can reach 2–3 hours. Wanting to photograph "Canglong Ridge red leaves + South Peak sea of clouds" means queuing at dawn, fighting for cable car tickets, and seeing nothing but the backs of people's heads at the East Peak sunrise viewing platform. This also causes a domino effect on Tongguan Ancient City, Qiaochuan, and Hancheng: parking is difficult by the Yellow River, there are queues for the electric carts in the Heyang reed marshes, and you can't drive into the Hancheng alleys. 3️⃣ The timing for red leaves/reed catkins is off; get it wrong and it's a wasted trip Huashan red leaves are mid-October to early November, Shaohuashan is late October to mid-November, Hancheng Xiangshan is mid-October to mid-November, Qiaochuan reed catkins are October to November, Fuping persimmons are around the time of Frost's Descent (late October), and Pucheng Qiaoling only gets good in late October. Come in September: The mountains are still mostly green, so your "Guanzhong autumn" photos will look like late summer. Come October 1–7: The crowds are at their peak, the leaves haven't turned red, the reed catkins are just starting, and the persimmons aren't ripe. You'll pay the highest prices to see "half-green, half-yellow" scenery and crowds of people. True Weinan autumn beauty doesn't peak until after October 20 to mid-November, when workers are back at their jobs and independent travel is actually worth it. 4️⃣ Attractions are scattered like a Guanzhong platter; without a car, you're just spending your time on the highway Huashan is in Huayin, Shaohuashan is in Huazhou, Qiaochuan is in Heyang, Tongguan is in the southeast corner, Hancheng is in the northeast corner, and Fuping/Pucheng/Dali each occupy their own spot. If you're starting from Xi'an, you have to split it into routes: East Route (Huashan + Tongguan), North Route (Chengcheng + Heyang + Hancheng), and Northwest Route (Fuping + Pucheng + Baishui). If you try to do a "Huashan + Shaohuashan + Qiaochuan + Hancheng + Tongguan + Fuping persimmon forest" six-stop trip on your first visit, you'll be spending 2–3 hours driving every day, dealing with motion sickness, heavy trucks on national highways, and crosswinds by the Yellow River. Weinan is better suited for "staying in one place and exploring slowly," not for "finishing the Yellow River and Huashan in three days." 5️⃣ The mountain temperature trap: short sleeves at the bottom, cotton-padded jackets at the top The average temperature at the top of Huashan is only 5.9°C. In October, the South/West Peak can drop to 2–13°C in the morning and evening. If you don't wear a windbreaker + a thin down jacket to watch the sunrise at the East Peak, you'll be shivering. Qiaochuan wetlands are 20°C during the day but cold in the evening wind; the wind by the Yellow River in Tongguan will blow your Hanfu skirt right into your face; the Fuping Weinan plateau has a day-night temperature difference of 5–18°C. If you wear a camisole, you'll look pretty for three photos and spend the rest of the trip sneezing. 6️⃣ Shichen buns/Shuipen lamb soup/Xue noodles are delicious, but there are plenty of tourist traps too Lao Zhu Shichen buns are only sold in the morning and sell out by noon; for Shuipen lamb soup, try the clear broth in Chengcheng or the hemp-spiced version in Pucheng—don't order the "all-in-one" Shuipen at the entrance of a scenic spot. Heyang Xue noodles, Dali crescent bread, Tongguan meat burgers, Fuping persimmon cakes/Qiongguo candy, and Hancheng prickly ash buds are all delicious, but: The "wild Yellow River fish" at the Qiaochuan pier is overpriced, there are many unlicensed guides at the foot of Huashan offering "fast-track/internal tours," cultural and creative shops in Hancheng Ancient City are twice as expensive as the old alleys, and Yaotou Kiln is quiet and easy to visit for nothing. The real local flavor is in: Linwei West 2nd Road/Old Town alleys, Huazhou backstreets, Heyang Old Town, Pucheng night markets, and Fuping Old Town—not at the big landmark signs. 📅 When is the right time? ✅ September 15–25 (non-weekends): The heat has faded, the rain hasn't become continuous, Huashan's cloud base is clear—a hidden little golden window for Weinan. ✅ October 20–November 15 (weekdays): Huashan red leaves, Shaohuashan colorful forests, Qiaochuan reed catkins, Fuping red persimmons, and Hancheng Xiangshan are all in season. This is when "Guanzhong East Prefecture is willing to offer up its autumn." ✅ April–May: Huashan's fresh green, Qiaochuan's tender reeds, not stuffy, and not the National Day holiday—the most stable time for a first visit. ❌ Early to mid-September: The start of the West China autumn rain, with fog + rain + slippery conditions in the mountains. ❌ October 1–7: Queues for the Huashan cable car, queues for parking in Tongguan, Qiaochuan reed catkins not full, Hancheng crowds increasing, and old town hotel prices jumping from 150 to 400+. 🚨 Self-rescue guide if you insist on going in September–October · Don't plan a big loop of "Huashan + Shaohuashan + Qiaochuan + Hancheng + Tongguan + Fuping." Choose "Linwei Old Town 2 days + Huashan 1 day" or "Heyang Qiaochuan + Hancheng 2 days" and that's enough. · Enter Huashan before 7:00 AM / take the West Peak cable car up. On rainy/foggy days, switch to visiting Xiyue Temple, Weinan Museum, Chengcheng Yaotou Kiln, or Pucheng Qiaoling. · Don't go to Shaohuashan during the National Day holiday; wait until after late October. Don't go to the Qianlong Temple plank road after rain. · Enter the reed marshes in Qiaochuan in the evening; it's scorching at noon and windy in the afternoon. Bring a swimsuit for the Virgin Spring hot springs, and ignore the "Yellow River fish 298" at the pier. · Stay near the old towns of Linwei/Huayin/Hancheng; don't insist on hotels at the scenic spots. Arrive before 7:00 AM for Shichen buns, and dip your crescent bread into the Shuipen lamb soup. · Outfit: Short sleeves + windbreaker + thin down jacket + non-slip shoes + folding umbrella. Don't wear Hanfu to climb Huashan, and don't wear high heels to walk in Chenlu-style old alleys. Weinan isn't bad, but if you come in September–October, you're gambling on the West China autumn rain, gambling on Huashan fog, gambling on Shaohuashan cable car queues, gambling on the Qiaochuan reed catkins not being open, gambling on the Fuping persimmons not being red, gambling on the wind by the Yellow River during the National Day holiday blowing your makeup off, and gambling on the Shichen buns being sold out. Wait until late October, when Huashan's red leaves burn Canglong Ridge a deep red, the Shaohuashan cable car passes through a sea of clouds and smoke trees, the Qiaochuan reed catkins fly like snow in the backlight, and you can get a bowl of Shuipen lamb soup with crescent bread in the Linwei old street without queuing—that is when "Guanzhong East Prefecture is willing to gently offer you its hardest mountains, its softest reeds, and its most solid carbs" ⛰️🍁🍜

The Yuan Dynasty mural tomb from Dong'er Village, Pucheng County, is a rare, well-preserved Yuan Dynasty mural tomb in Shaanxi! Discovered only in 1998, it has now been relocated in its entirety to the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum. 🎉 Walking into the exhibition hall feels like traveling back 700 years to the Yuan Dynasty. ✨ The dancers in the murals are right there in the room, and as the daylight streams in, the historical atmosphere is truly immersive! The dancers' postures are vivid, their robes flowing as if they might step right off the wall at any moment. 💃 I highly recommend this to anyone who loves history, murals, and niche cultural sites. Such a high level of completeness is truly rare in Shaanxi! Every line tells a story of Yuan Dynasty aesthetics, making you lose track of time. ⏳ For those visiting Xi'an, don't just stick to the popular social media hotspots. The Shaanxi Archaeology Museum is an absolute treasure trove, 🧭 and seeing the relocated mural tomb in person is truly breathtaking! 📍Address: Shaanxi Archaeology Museum (follow the on-site signs to find the specific exhibition hall)

The Pucheng Examination Hall was built in the 17th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1891). It covers an area of 6,200 square meters and has a history of over 100 years. The existing main buildings include the foyer, examination cells, Lunxiu Hall, bathhouse courtyard, and official hall, totaling over 70 rooms. It is the best-preserved examination site for Qing Dynasty entry-level candidates in the country. It has now become a specialized site museum that integrates research on the imperial examination system, exhibition of imperial examination artifacts, inheritance of traditional culture, and educational activities. It houses over 1,000 cultural relics and is a key cultural relic protection unit and a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

One of the two Pucheng pagodas, the South Temple Tang Pagoda, is officially named Huiche Temple Pagoda. It is located on the campus of Pucheng Middle School. The temple itself has long since disappeared, leaving only the thousand-year-old Tang pagoda standing quietly. First built in the first year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (627 AD), it is 25 years older than the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an and 80 years older than the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, making it one of the oldest surviving Tang Dynasty brick pagodas in Shaanxi. The ancient pagoda originally had 11 stories, but 10 remain today. It has a square base, stands about 36 meters tall, and the base side length is 9 meters. The arched doors on the pagoda body are staggered, and the bricks are bonded with sticky rice mortar. The overall design is exquisite, with refined brickwork and smooth, graceful contours. It has withstood numerous earthquakes over the past millennium without collapsing, serving as a classic combination of art and structural engineering. It is a typical representative of the evolution from pavilion-style wooden pagodas to brick and stone structures. Because it is located in the southwest of Pucheng and echoes the Song Dynasty North Temple Pagoda from a distance, it is also known as the South Temple Tang Pagoda. 📍Basic Information ▫️Address: Inside Pucheng Middle School, Pucheng County, Weinan City ▫️Opening hours: Visits are within the school campus. Entry requires registration, and access is not guaranteed. Climbing the pagoda is not permitted; it can only be viewed from the outside. ▫️Recommended visit time: 20 minutes ▫️Admission: Free 🚗Transportation Guide ▪️Driving: Navigate to "Huiche Temple Pagoda (South Temple Tang Pagoda)" and park nearby on the old town streets. ▪️High-speed rail: Xi'an North Station → Pucheng East Station, then a 10-minute taxi ride to the old town. ▪️Old town route: Chongshou Temple Pagoda (North Pagoda) > Huiche Temple Pagoda (South Pagoda). Visit both the large and small Pucheng pagodas, then explore the Huaiyuanli block. ✨Highlights A square, dense-eave, hollow brick pagoda with 10 remaining stories, standing 36 meters tall. It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. During the Great Ming Earthquake, the top two stories collapsed, but it was later repaired and preserved to this day. The pagoda body mimics wooden architecture, with intricate details like brick-carved dougong brackets and sawtooth cornices. A stone tablet inscribed with "Relic Pagoda of All Buddhas" is embedded in the second story. The interior still houses Tang Dynasty stone Buddha statues, which are simple, solemn, and fully embody the architectural spirit of the early Tang Dynasty. 💡Travel Tips 1. The location is inside a middle school. Due to campus management, you may not always be able to enter for a close-up view. We did not go inside and used a drone to film it, respecting school regulations. 2. You can combine this with a visit to the Chongshou Temple Song Pagoda (North Pagoda). With one Tang and one Song pagoda, you can see both of Pucheng's famous pagodas in one trip. The temple has vanished, but the solitary pagoda remains. Through over a thousand years of wind and rain, it quietly guards the ancient city of Pucheng.

Honestly, before I went, I thought Weinan = a one-day trip to Mount Hua But I ended up staying for 4 days. The greenery of the Qinling Mountains, the banks of the Yellow River, the brick carvings of the old Ming and Qing dynasty villages, the 7 AM Shichen buns… It's all stuck in my head 🥹 💰 Budget breakdown (per person) · Budget version (bus + hostel + street food): CNY 800–1,000 / 4 days · Comfortable version (high-speed rail + budget hotel + mix of meals and street food): CNY 1,200–1,500 / 4 days · Major ticket costs: Mount Hua ticket + round-trip West Peak cable car + shuttle bus approx. CNY 440 (West-up/West-down, energy-saving version), Mount Shaohua ticket approx. CNY 60 + cable car extra, Qiaochuan Virgin Spring CNY 44 / Fushan CNY 24, Dangjia Village single ticket approx. CNY 50 (often bundled with Liangdai Village for CNY 80) · Meals cost CNY 60–90 a day for a very filling experience, accommodation in Huayin/Weinan city is CNY 150–260, Hancheng ancient city homestays CNY 200–320 📍 4 hidden gems (ranked by experience, not popularity) 1️⃣ Mount Hua—it's not just scary ⛰️ Don't get weak knees just hearing about Mount Hua! For a relaxed trip, take the bus to Yuquan Temple → West Peak cable car up → West Peak → South Peak → Plank Walk in the Sky (for the brave) → North Peak cable car down. The whole trip takes 6–7 hours without wearing out your knees. The view from the West Peak cable car with the clouds rolling beneath my feet made me delete three selfies and replace them with landscape photos 📸 Tip: The summit is about 10 degrees cooler than the base, so bring a windbreaker. Water is expensive, but you don't need to carry a ton; just bring a thermos and some chocolate. 2️⃣ Mount Shaohua—Mount Hua's quiet little sister 🌲 Located in Huazhou District, it's much less crowded. The sound of water in Shimen Gorge is loud, and the glass skywalk at Qianlong Temple is dizzying but not crowded. It's super cool in the summer. I went early that morning, and the fog hadn't cleared yet; Hongya Lake looked like someone had poured dark green paint into it. Tickets are about CNY 60, and the one-way cable car is around CNY 100. If you don't like climbing, just take the cable car and walk the flat paths; it's suitable for seniors and children. 3️⃣ Qiaochuan Wetland—the place from the "Guan Guan Ju Jiu" poem in the Classic of Poetry 🌾 This Yellow River wetland in Heyang County is really underrated because of its name. Soak your feet in the Virgin Spring (the bubbles from the spring eye are amazing), take a bamboo raft through the reed marshes. The moment the migratory birds took flight in autumn, my office-worker friend said, "It was worth it." Fushan is a small mountain shaped like a scorpion. It takes ten minutes to climb to the top. The scent of incense mixed with the wind blowing through the reed leaves is strange but addictive. 4️⃣ Dangjia Village, Hancheng—a living fossil of Ming and Qing dynasty villages 🧱 This village in Xizhuang Town, Hancheng, has it all: gate towers, brick carvings of family mottos, and the Wenxing Pavilion. It's not one of those renovated, fake-ancient streets; it's an old village where people actually live. At 4 PM, the slanted light hit the Gengdu Di (Farming and Reading Residence) plaque. I stood there for ten minutes without saying a word. Single tickets are around CNY 50, or CNY 80 for a combo ticket with the Liangdai Village Rui State Ruins Museum. If you like culture, definitely add a night tour of Hancheng Ancient City (free admission). 🗺️ 4-day, 3-night itinerary (optimized route) Day 1: Xi'an/Weinan city → Mount Hua (West-up/West-down) → Stay in Huayin Day 2: Huayin morning market for tofu puffs → Half day at Mount Shaohua (Shimen Gorge + Qianlong Temple) → Return to Weinan city in the evening to stay Day 3: Weinan → Heyang Qiaochuan (Virgin Spring + Fushan + reed marshes) → Stay in Heyang or head to Hancheng Day 4: Hancheng Dangjia Village → Explore and eat in Hancheng Ancient City → Return (If you're short on time, cut Mount Shaohua; the Mount Hua + Qiaochuan + Hancheng route also works) 🍜 What to eat (ranked by meal, order these to avoid disappointment) · Breakfast: Shichen buns (monk's hat shape, the fatty meat filling is the best, they sell out fast) + tofu puffs with Guokui Yazi (flatbread). Go to the old shops in Weinan city at 7 AM to queue. · At the foot of Mount Hua: Tongguan Roujiamo (meat burger). The bun is flaky, add the braised meat; also try a bowl of Huayin Mashi Pao (dough drop soup). · Chengcheng/Pucheng area: Shuipen mutton soup with crescent-shaped bread + pickled garlic. The broth is clear and the meat is tender. Have a bowl in the morning and you won't feel tired while climbing. · Heyang: Zhe noodles. Made from buckwheat with a sour and spicy sauce, locals eat it as a main meal. · Hancheng: Mutton Hubu (stew) + buckwheat noodles. Just walk into any small restaurant in the ancient city. · Pucheng souvenir: Chuantou buns. Crispy when eaten cold, great with meat or spicy sauce. · Souvenir: Fuping persimmon cakes (the ones with frost, gooey center). Only authentic in autumn/winter. Don't buy them at the scenic spot entrance; go to Fuping or city supermarkets. ⚠️ A few honest truths Don't trust the low-price guides at the foot of Mount Hua; buy all tickets on the official mini-program. Qiaochuan bamboo rafts and hot springs are charged separately; ask before boarding. You don't need a guide for Dangjia Village, but definitely look up at the words on the lintels. Weinan's overall cost of living is friendly. Don't eat at the big restaurants right at the entrance of scenic spots; walk 200 meters into the alleys for better taste and prices. Weinan isn't a city you just "stop by to see." It's a place that blends landscapes, the Yellow River, and the delicious food of the Guanzhong region. 4 days isn't enough to love it fully, but it's enough for you to come back and tell your friends: Don't just go to Xi'an in Shaanxi; the eastern part is wild and warm ✨

🕰️ Pucheng | Beijing time origin · time-seeking journey guide 📍 Why Pucheng The "Beijing time" on your phone every day actually comes from Jinzhishan in Pucheng, Shaanxi — this was once the shortwave time signal station of the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (code-named "Project 326," built and trial-broadcast in 1970). It has now been transformed into the Time Museum, China’s first museum themed around time. Pucheng is also the hometown of famous generals and ministers, an open-air museum of Tang dynasty stone carvings, and a treasure trove of Guanzhong cuisine. 🚗 Transportation · From Xi’an (recommended): high-speed train from Xi’an North to Pucheng East (about 40 minutes, second-class seat ¥28); or drive about 1.5 hours via Jingkun Expressway. The Time Museum is about 15 km from the county seat, so self-driving or chartering a car is recommended. · Within the county: old town attractions are concentrated and can be reached by walking or taxi; for Qiaoling and the Time Museum, taxi or self-driving is recommended. 🗓️ Recommended itinerary (2 days 1 night) Day 1 | Old town culture · hometown of generals and ministers · Morning: depart Xi’an → Pucheng East → Qing dynasty examination museum (a rare Qing dynasty child student exam site nationwide, with blue brick dormitories and an immersive exam atmosphere) → Pucheng county museum (Confucian temple) to see the Ming dynasty six-dragon wall and Gao Lishi stele · Noon: Shui Pen lamb (recommended Qin family, Lao Bai family, or Qiao Lao Da, with fresh soup and tender meat served with Chuantou bread) · Afternoon: General Yang Hucheng Memorial Hall (No. 29 Donghuaiyuan Lane, free) + Wang Ding Memorial Hall / Lin Zexu Memorial Hall (Daren Lane, about 100 meters apart) · Evening: Huaiyuanli / Daren Lane old street night view, stay in the old town district Day 2 | Time Museum → Tang dynasty Qiaoling → return trip · Morning: Time Museum (former site of the National Time Service Center’s Pucheng shortwave time signal station), see the underground machine room, transmitter units, and timekeeping history exhibition. "Beijing time is sent from here" (⚠️ The park is located at a higher elevation with views over the county seat. Take sun protection and mosquito repellent. It’s recommended to confirm opening hours in advance) · Noon: eat Babao spicy sandwich + hand-pulled noodles/steamed bowl in the county seat or Qiaoling town · Afternoon: Tang Ruizong Qiaoling (about 15 km from the county seat, the best-preserved Tang dynasty tomb in Shaanxi, with majestic stone lions and horses along the spirit way, few visitors for great photos) → if time allows, add Tang Huiling (Li Xian’s tomb, with exquisite murals in the underground palace) · Evening: return to Xi’an 💡 If you only have 1 day: prioritize the Time Museum + Qiaoling + Qing dynasty examination museum + Shui Pen lamb, and adjust the rest accordingly. 🎫 Core attraction overview Attraction Highlights Admission/opening Time Museum Former site of Project 326, original timekeeping equipment, underground machine room Free (recommended to confirm opening hours in advance) Qiaoling Tang Ruizong Li Dan’s tomb, peak Tang dynasty stone carvings About ¥17.5 Qing dynasty examination museum Complete Qing dynasty child student exam site About ¥20 Yang Hucheng Memorial Hall Former residence of patriotic general, Guanzhong old residence Free Wang Ding / Lin Zexu Memorial Hall Qing dynasty official residences, teacher-student friendship Lin Zexu hall about ¥14 Luyanghu Wetland Lakeside walking and fresh air Free Zhongquan ancient city Folk street night view Free 🍜 Pucheng must-eats · Shui Pen lamb: clear soup, tender meat, crescent bread/Chuantou bread with spicy sauce, soup refillable · Babao spicy sandwich: Pucheng’s soul snack, fragrant and spicy · Chuantou steamed bread: rich wheat aroma, good as a gift · Gao Li meat, vinegar noodles, fried dough cake: local specialty main dishes and snacks 💡 Practical tips · Best seasons: April–May, September–October, comfortable spring and autumn weather, good lighting for stone carvings · The Time Museum is in a remote, elevated location, so self-driving is recommended; bring mosquito repellent and sun protection · Old town attractions are mostly concentrated in Huaiyuan Lane and Daren Lane, walkable with comfortable shoes · Qiaoling is best visited at dusk, when the sunset casts a great atmosphere on the stone carvings

Visiting the Shaanxi Archaeological Museum allows you not only to admire various exquisite cultural relics but also to witness the process of major tomb archaeological discoveries and the excavation of artifacts, offering a strong sense of immersion. The mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, the cultural ancestor of the Chinese nation Xuanyuan Huangdi, is known as the "world's first mausoleum" and is an important spiritual symbol of Chinese civilization. 1. Origin of the core mausoleum site Historical records: The Records of the Grand Historian · Annals of the Five Emperors clearly state "The Yellow Emperor died and was buried at Qiaoshan." The officially recognized mausoleum site is located at Qiaoshan, Huangling County, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province. Archaeological support: There are 48 Yangshao culture sites distributed around, which highly correspond to the archaeological cultural background of the Yellow Emperor's era. Other claims: There are also Yellow Emperor mausoleum-related relics in Lingbao, Henan; Zhengning, Gansu; and Pinggu, Beijing, but none have become the official main sacrificial sites throughout history. 2. Historical evolution Beginning in pre-Qin: In the third year of Duke Ling of Qin (422 BC), the government officially started sacrificial activities for the Yellow Emperor at Qiaoshan. Han dynasty regulations: In the first year of Yuanfeng under Emperor Wu of Han (110 BC), he personally led 180,000 troops to the mausoleum for sacrifice, formally establishing the national grand sacrificial system. In the same year, the Xuanyuan Temple was built on the western slope of Qiaoshan. Tang and Song improvements: In the fifth year of Dali under Emperor Daizong of Tang, the Yellow Emperor sacrifice was included in the national sacrificial rites, and large-scale repairs of the mausoleum and temple were carried out. In the second year of Kaibao in the Song dynasty, due to flooding, the Xuanyuan Temple was moved to the eastern slope of Qiaoshan, and guardians were assigned to protect the mausoleum. Ming and Qing regulations: Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming dynasty designated it as the highest-level national sacrifice, requiring a grand sacrifice every three years. The Qing dynasty continued the tradition of repairs and sending envoys for sacrifices. Modern development: In 1942, to distinguish it from the Tang Ruizong mausoleum area in Pucheng, Shaanxi, it was officially named the "Yellow Emperor Mausoleum." In 1961, it was listed as one of the first national key cultural relics protection units, numbered "Ancient Tomb No. 1." 3. Core historical remains Ancient cypress grove: The mausoleum area currently has more than 80,000 ancient cypress trees, including the "Yellow Emperor's hand-planted cypress," which is about 5,000 years old and known as the "father of cypress trees in the world." Historical artifacts: More than 100 steles from the Han dynasty to the present are preserved, along with the Han Wuxiantai site built during Emperor Wu of Han's reign. Intangible heritage: The Qingming public sacrificial ceremony for Xuanyuan Huangdi was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists in 2006. The 2026 public sacrificial event will be held under the theme "Strengthening the consciousness of the Chinese national community and advancing the new journey of Chinese-style modernization."

I've always wanted to take my family to properly experience the profound historical heritage of Xi'an. This exclusive private half-day tour we booked far exceeded the expectations of our family of three, both in terms of the knowledge we gained and the exceptional service we received. From the moment our private car picked us up at 3:00 PM, we were treated to a top-tier cultural feast. First and foremost, a huge shoutout to our driver, Mr. Ma. Not only is he a highly skilled and steady driver, but he is also a walking encyclopedia of history. On our way to the Terracotta Warriors, he gave us an in-depth analysis of the Qin Dynasty and Emperor Qin Shi Huang. His vivid explanations actually corrected many of our past misconceptions. We were absolutely fascinated by the historical trivia he shared, such as how Emperor Qin Shi Huang's domineering personality was deeply influenced by his traumatic childhood. He also explained that the "Beijing Time" we rely on daily is actually broadcasted from Shaanxi, as the National Time Service Center is located in Pucheng County, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. Even more surprisingly, he pointed out the exact historical location of the "burning of books and burying of scholars," and explained the archaeological reasons why the excavation of the Terracotta Warriors stopped at a specific point. We were deeply impressed by his profound knowledge. Throughout the trip, Mr. Ma's thoughtful arrangements made us feel right at home. To let us taste authentic local flavors, he took us to a Shaanxi restaurant. We enjoyed tender cumin mutton, crispy and savory Roujiamo (Chinese meat burgers), and stir-fried leafy greens. The ingredients were fresh and the flavors were outstanding. What was even more considerate was that to save us from waiting in long lines for "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" tickets at the box office, Mr. Ma personally handled the ticket collection. This allowed us to enjoy a leisurely dinner and comfortably wait for him to drive us to Huaqing Palace. After the performance, despite the massive crowds, Mr. Ma was already waiting for us at the designated spot, allowing us to quickly get into the car and rest after a tiring evening. This meticulous care truly deserves a five-star rating. Furthermore, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Ms. Zhang, the tour guide who showed us around the Terracotta Warriors. Not only was she incredibly knowledgeable about history and happy to answer all our questions, but she was also exceptionally warm and friendly. In the crowded exhibition halls, she actively found the best viewing spots for us, giving vivid explanations while helping us take precious family photos. What moved me the most was how she carefully accommodated my younger son's pace throughout the entire tour, ensuring he was fully engaged. After the guided tour ended, she personally watched us safely board Mr. Ma's car before leaving. Her strong sense of responsibility made us feel incredibly secure. Because of the professionalism and sincerity of Mr. Ma and Ms. Zhang, this journey has become our most unforgettable memory of our trip to Xi'an. For friends seeking a high-quality, in-depth travel experience, this exclusive private tour is absolutely a perfect choice!

July ran to Weinan, really by Huashan and Korean City when the loess mixed with pepper flavor attracted to 🌞 compiled a just finished stepping points of the essay, four boards think where to write to where, the order is random, use yourself feel convenient to take away ~ 📸 Take pictures beautiful places to talk about, after all, taking pictures is the serious thing Huashan Mountain West Peak cliff wearing a bright dress, the sea of clouds that day directly sealed the god ⛰️ East Peak sunrise and other that "Phnom Penh" do not press the shutter so hastily, the sun is a finger wide from the sea of clouds when the color is most transparent, mobile phones must hang a rope, the wind can really blow you away. The late blue hour of the ancient city of Hancheng stands at the bottom of the archway. The reeds of the Virgin Spring in Chachuan, walking against the light in the morning S-shaped wooden canyon, white dress and straw hat, the "蒹葭苍苍" in the poetry scripture is directly embodied 🌾 The observation deck at the turn of the Yellow River at Tongguan, the evening light sweeps over, the silhouette of the Guanlou with the water of the Yellow River, the atmosphere does not need to be adjusted. ⚠️ Guide to avoiding pits, blood and tears in exchange Those "low-price tour guides" "internal passage free tickets" wild guides at the foot of Mount Hua, all shake their heads, their lives are not worth those few steps 🙅‍♀️ Cableway tickets and summit accommodation are full in July and August, locked on the trip three or five days in advance, temporary to the window will really cry. Long sky canyon to pay separately for safety ropes, gloves must be brought, iron chain long-term rust plus climber sweat, do not wear home palms are all printed. Don't take "private boats" by the Yellow River, regular docks are safe; Do not step down deep on wetland beach paint, as the low tide edge is easy to sink. July climb Huashan sunscreen three treasures (ice sleeves + sun hat + spray) welded on the face, scenic mineral water is twice as expensive as the mountain down, carry two yourself, and add a cucumber-flavored infusion to supplement salt. Cave shoes can't be used for night climbing. Non-slip shoes with headlamps and a thin jacket can make you feel cold in the morning at the top of the mountain. 🗺️ I arranged the route like this, three days and two nights not rushed Day1 High-speed rail down to Huashan North Station (don't buy the wrong Huashan Station is ordinary speed), the scenic spot connects to the visitor center, West Peak Cableway → South Peak (the highest one) → East Peak → Middle Peak → North Peak Cableway down, the whole journey of five or six hours, legs still use the version. Go down the hill and stay in Huayin, and walk around Yuquan Courtyard at night. Day2 Early bus to Korea City, Sima Qian Temple climb 99 steps overlooking the Yellow River, follow the Party Village to see the Ming and Qing courtyard brick carvings, in the evening back to Korea City Ancient City to stay one night, the red lantern street night shadow beautiful. Day3 Korean City ride an hour and a half to Heyang Chachuan, Virgin Spring bamboo raft through reeds, soak a spring, noon wetland farmhouse eat Yellow River big carp, afternoon by the way to Tongguan ancient city to see the Yellow River turn, then back to Xi'an retreat. If you think three days is too rushed, you can delete Chachuan. Two days of specializing in Huashan and Korea City are enough. Booking tickets and booking rooms I locked together on Ctrip, which is more worry-free than on-site. 🍜 In terms of food, Weinan is a true carbohydrate paradise Tongguan meat sandwich dumplings recognize triangular flat dumplings, the kind of thousand-layer pastry bite down to fall off the residue, the sandwich is the five flowers are not pure lean, fragrant but not greasy🥙 Hua Yin Da Dao Noodles are as wide as a trouser belt, splashed with oil and spicy, and can eat two bowls with garlic cloves. The lamb dumplings in Koreatown are sour and spicy, with a plate of cold wild vegetables to relieve the thirst, and pepper yogurt (sounds dark but unexpectedly goes well with barbecue), the red and sweet noodles are sweet noodles that local old ladies will ask you to try. Pu Cheng Shui Basin Lamb Soup with Crescent Mooncake with Sugar Garlic. The bowl in the morning will be powerful all day long. Heyang's buckwheat whole grain, sour and spicy appetizer, is known as "the earliest instant noodles". Souvenir Fuping persimmon cake choose frosted white (those is sugar not sulfur, smell sweet is right), Korean city big red pao pepper to bring home two bags of hot pot. Snack shops first look at the price tag before ordering. You can recognize the sesame burrito in "Golden City Lane" in the ancient city. Oh yes, inside Sima Qian's temple to remove hats, do not cross outside the yellow line, do not touch the brick carvings in the old courtyard of Party Family Village, basic etiquette walking in a circle no one will tell you👌 The biggest feeling after this trip to Weinan is that it is not as crowded as Xi'an, nor as desolate as northern Shaanxi. Just do a good sunscreen in July, leave the rest to the mountains and wind.

Strolling along its shores, watching birds skim the water, and listening to the echoes of the Han Dynasty, one truly understands the meaning of "the world changes like the sea turning into mulberry fields." "Autumn winds sweep across Luyang Lake, refusing to let Jiangnan claim its watery glory"—this is not just poetry, but the confidence and pride of this land beneath our feet. As sons and daughters of China, we should feel boundless pride in this magnificent transformation and prosperous era!

Tangqiao Mausoleum is the tomb of Emperor Ruizong of Tang, Li Dan, the fifth emperor of the Tang Dynasty. It is located on Fengshan Mountain (called Qiaoshan during the Tang Dynasty), 15 kilometers northwest of Pucheng County, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. It is the only Tang imperial tomb constructed during the Kaiyuan era and, together with Qianling Mausoleum, is known as the "Twin Walls of Tang Dynasty Tomb Stone Carving Art." It is renowned as the "best stone carving of Qiaoling in the world" and is one of the most well-preserved and artistically superior tombs among the eighteen Tang imperial mausoleums in Guanzhong. Li Dan (662-716) was the eighth son of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, Li Zhi, the fourth son of Empress Wu Zetian, and the father of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Li Longji. He ascended the throne twice and abdicated three times: first enthroned in 684 but soon deposed by Wu Zetian; restored to the throne after the Tang Long coup in 710; and in 712 voluntarily abdicated to Crown Prince Li Longji, becoming the Taishang Huang (Retired Emperor), laying the foundation for the Kaiyuan golden age. He died in the fourth year of Kaiyuan (716) at the age of 55 and was buried in Qiaoling in the tenth month of the same year. Emperor Xuanzong built this grand mausoleum for his father, reflecting the prosperity of the era. During the Kaiyuan period, the Tang Dynasty experienced economic prosperity and cultural flourishing. The construction of Qiaoling was not limited by financial resources, with stone carvings and craftsmanship far surpassing other Tang tombs, serving as a tangible witness to the Kaiyuan golden age. The mausoleum complex was built entirely following the regulations of Tang Chang'an city, with the tomb built into the mountain and a city wall surrounding the mountain. It covers a total area of 8.52 square kilometers with a perimeter of 13.34 kilometers, making it one of the largest imperial tombs among the eighteen Tang mausoleums. Qiaoling follows the highest Tang imperial tomb regulation of "building the tomb according to the mountain," using the main peak of Fengshan as the burial mound, with the underground palace carved into the mountain's interior. The overall layout is rigorous and majestic. There are currently 47 stone carvings preserved at Qiaoling, the most complete and artistically valuable group among the eighteen Tang mausoleums. They fully restore the ceremonial regulations of Tang imperial tombs, with each piece representing the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty sculpture art. The stone carvings are large in scale with full lines, fully embodying the Tang Dynasty's aesthetic of "beauty in fullness, grand and magnificent," sharply contrasting with the slender style of the early Tang and the decline of the late Tang. The figures and animals are realistically vivid, with precise and detailed carvings of clothing folds, feathers, and muscles, representing the highest level of Tang stone carving art.
