Small bowls come one after another, and the owner keeps refilling. After finishing, they count bowls with stones. You can get full for just over 20 yuan. The meat sauce is made from Tibetan pork bones and is very flavorful. Don’t buy dried yak meat at tourist spots. In Dingqing county town, behind the Lao Sichuan supermarket, there’s a local stall selling hind leg meat for 80 yuan per jin. Dip it in chili powder to taste the creamy flavor. Butter tea and tsampa are standard breakfast items. The savory taste might take getting used to, but they really help with altitude sickness. In Leiwuqi town, try the butter tea with a little saffron at Amala Tibetan restaurant. It costs 10 yuan per set with barley cakes and is worth trying. Summer-only treats include ginseng fruit yogurt. If you see it, don’t miss out. It’s sweet and sour, richer than mainland yogurt. Around Gongjue, Awang’s whole roasted lamb must be booked in advance. The 37 km trip should allow 1.5 hours. The last 12 km is a gravel road with sharp turns and steep slopes, more challenging than the 72 bends. Some sections have cliffs on one side, making passing other vehicles extremely difficult. Novice drivers are strongly advised against this—it’s not a joke. ▪️ Arrive at Zizhu Temple in the afternoon, at 4,800 meters elevation. Six bright red karst peaks rise sharply, with the white-walled, gold-topped temple nestled in the cliffside. A 3,000-year-old Bon sacred site, free admission, open all day. ▪️ In summer, sunset is around 8:30 PM, with light coming from the west. The entire Zizhu Mountain changes from ochre red to golden red, prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Honestly, this scene is a hundred times more stunning than any documentary footage. ❖ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯 In-depth at Zizhu Temple + Dingqing Danxia ▪️ Wake up at 5 AM to watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds. In summer, the valley is usually filled with clouds, creating a sea of clouds. The peaks piercing through the clouds is what I call eastern Tibet’s greatest wonder. ▪️ In the morning, walk the circumambulation path around the temple. There are several small retreat huts clinging to nearly vertical cliffs, connected only by simple wooden ladders. Just look, don’t attempt to climb. ▪️ In the afternoon, descend the mountain. The Danxia landforms around Dingqing are worth photographing slowly. The mountains on both sides of National Highway 317 show vast areas of orange-red, brown-red, and deep red. On sunny days, any curve offers a spectacular view. ▪️ Dingqing is the birthplace of the Reba dance. If you’re lucky to catch a local festival, you can see the original Reba drum dance. ❖ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟰 Dingqing → Bianba Three-color Lake → Return ▪️ Dingqing to Bianba is about 200 km | 4+ hours. The Three-color Lake is a hidden gem. The white lake, black lake, and yellow lake are adjacent but have very different colors. ▪️ Near the lake is the Puyu Glacier. In summer, be cautious during the ice cave melting period. Do not enter the ice cave; just admire it from the outside—it’s already stunning. ▪️ Return can be by the same route to Chamdo or detour from Bianba toward Luolong. Zhuomalangcuo Lake in Luolong is so off the beaten path that it has almost no tourists. If time allows, take a detour to see it. 🎒 Essential survival tips for this route 🔸 Zizhu Temple is at 4,800 meters, nearly 1,000 meters higher than Ranwu Lake. The risk of altitude sickness is significantly higher. It’s recommended to take Rhodiola a week in advance. Move slowly uphill. Avoid running, jumping, or shouting. 🔸 Dingqing county town has a gas station. Fill up before heading up the mountain. There are no commercial facilities on the mountain. Bring at least 2 L of drinking water and high-calorie food. 🔸 Mobile signal: 4G is normal in Dingqing county town, but most of the mountain route has no signal. Download offline maps in advance and bring a walkie-talkie just in case. 🔸 Accommodation is basic, so be mentally prepared. There are hotels in the county town, but hot water and heating may be unstable. Guesthouses offer a better experience but have simpler facilities, suitable for those who can rough it. 🔸 July is the Zizhu Temple festival season. From late June to mid-August, there are spirit dance ceremonies. If you’re lucky to be there, you can see monks wearing masks performing ancient Bon rituals. This kind of scene can’t be seen outside Tibet. 💡 The mindset for traveling 317 This route is not suitable for first-time visitors to Tibet. It’s better for travelers who have already been to Lhasa and Nyingchi and want to explore deeper. There are few supply points, high altitude, and complex road conditions. But the rewards are huge— You’ll see Tibet in its most raw and authentic form, unfiltered by any lens. It’s a landscape and faith that have barely changed in 3,000 years. After this trip, even staying in the city feels surreal. It’s definitely more than just a lake!! I stayed for four days and explored every corner around Ranwu town. The whole town stretches along National Highway G318, at an altitude of 3,927 meters. The town is small; it takes about 20 minutes to walk from east to west. But there are tons of activities radiating out from here—Ranwu Lake itself is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, each with a completely different vibe. Further in, there are the Lhagong Glacier group, Ranwu caves, Ranna grassland, Xiudeng Monastery… You can connect them all and still find four or five days not enough. Since 2022, the town’s infrastructure has been upgraded significantly. Roads have been widened, trails improved, and even the viewpoints are now much better planned. The experience of visiting Ranwu now is completely different from five years ago. · —————————————— 🌊 How to choose among the three lake sections? Many guides just say "go to Ranwu Lake," but the upper, middle, and lower lakes each have their own character👇 “Upper lake · Yangcuo Lake” — the wildest feel 25 km from town, accessible via County Road G559. It has the largest water volume in summer and the widest lake surface, surrounded by dense primeval forest on both sides. Few tourists visit here. It’s perfect for a slow self-drive trip to find a quiet lakeside spot. The road is good and passable by sedan. “Middle lake · Bangcuo Lake” — the most convenient Right next to town, within walking distance. The lake is small but very accessible. It’s great for an evening stroll to watch the sunset. You can see herds of yaks and traditional Tibetan houses by the shore, with the strongest cultural atmosphere. “Lower lake · Lenganjabu Lake” — the most off-the-beaten-path About 15 km along G318 toward Bomi, the lake narrows into a canyon shape with steep mountains on both sides, offering a deep and tranquil beauty. Very few tourists come here. It’s ideal for a stop on the way back the next day. 🔑 Insider tip: If you only have one day, go to the upper lake in the morning for morning mist photos and watch the sunset at the middle lake in the evening. If you have two days, include the lower lake too. Each lake offers a different mood, never repetitive. · —————————————— 🧊 Lhagong Glacier summer field test Lhagong Glacier is 30 km from Ranwu town. These natural limestone caves are little known even among locals. The entrance is small, but inside is a wonderland. Stalactites sparkle under headlamp light. July is rainy, so the cave is slippery. Wear waterproof shoes. “Xiudeng Monastery” is a small, off-the-beaten-path Tibetan Buddhist temple on the hillside behind Ranwu town. Almost no tourists visit. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Ranwu Lake and the whole town, better than any viewpoint. The climb is about 200 meters elevation gain and takes half an hour. “Ranna grassland” is perfect for a half-day leisurely visit, about a 50-minute drive from Ranwu town. July is the best time to visit, with wildflowers everywhere and snow-capped mountains in the distance. Laying a blanket and relaxing here all afternoon beats any spa🌸 · —————————————— 🏡 Accommodation experience ⛰️ The starry sky glass room is at the east end of Ranwu town, a three-minute drive from G318 via a small road. There’s no light pollution, so you can truly see the Milky Way when you look up✨ ⛰️ The roof has a large transparent glass skylight plus floor-to-ceiling windows on the side. During the day, the snow mountains reflect on the floor. At night, you can lie in bed and watch star trails with the naked eye🌌 ⛰️ The room includes an independent oxygen machine, floor heating, and a humidifier. At 3,920 meters altitude, you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness ⛰️ The terrace faces east. Sunrise is around 6:20 AM. Good lake view rooms and starry sky rooms usually book out 20 days in advance. It’s best to lock in your room as soon as your itinerary is confirmed. Since ancient times, it has been the vital passage for Sichuan, Yunnan, and Qinghai into Tibet and the first stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road entering Tibet. Along this culturally rich route, you’ll connect snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes, ancient temples, and faith. [Four stops in Chamdo, a journey through mountains and rivers] First stop: Jiangda | red secrets and the first stop entering Tibet Crossing the Jinsha River, Jiangda is the “eastern gateway” to Tibet along G317. Gangto, known as the “first village liberated in Tibet,” stands quietly by the riverbank. The cliff bears a giant carving of the word “Tibet.” Red Flag Square and the river crossing site tell stories of a turbulent past. Along the way, explore the snow-capped mountain corridors of Xueba Valley or discover the woodcarving craftsmanship at Boluo Ancient Marsh. If time allows, drive to Gama Tibetan Art Valley to visit the hometown of intangible cultural heritage artisans. 💡 Tip: The altitude here is moderate, making it an excellent place to service your vehicle and restock supplies. Third stop: Leiwuqi | plateau forests and colorful temples Heading north from Karuo, Leiwuqi spreads across forested valleys and is known as the “forest sea of eastern Tibet” and “little Switzerland of Tibet.” The Chajema Hall stands amid blue skies and green fields, with layers of red, white, and black stripes resembling a giant thangka standing for a thousand years. Don’t miss the deep forests and natural hot springs of Yiri Gorge. Leiwuqi’s yak meat is rich and flavorful—a pot of yak hotpot is perfect to soothe the road weariness. 💡 Tip: This stretch has many sharp turns and narrow roads but stunning scenery. Use your horn frequently when turning. The hot springs in Yiri Gorge are worth a soak. Fourth stop: Dingqing | the red symphony on the backbone of eastern Tibet Dingqing is the highest city on this journey. The spiritual highland is Mount Zizhu at 4,800 m—“Zizhu” means six peaks, with towering, steep rock formations. On clear days, the golden roofs of mountain buildings shine brightly, like a palace fallen from the heavens. At the summit, the endless snow-capped mountains stretch to the horizon. The wind may blow away the dust behind you, but it can’t erase the mountains and rivers you’ve passed. G317 is more than a road; it’s the backbone of Tibet’s source. too overwhelming! 😭 I originally planned to escape the heat in Tibet this summer, but Chamdo gave me a lesson— So beautiful that you don’t want to leave. 🏔️ My 3-day 2-night itinerary Day 1: Qiangbalin Monastery → Tea Horse City Arrived in the afternoon and headed straight to Qiangbalin Monastery. The golden roof dazzled under the sun. In the evening, strolled around Tea Horse City, drank butter tea, and ate yak jerky. Prices were surprisingly reasonable. Day 2: Ranwu Lake → Lhagu Glacier The water at Ranwu Lake is as green as emerald, no filter needed for photos. Seeing the blue ice of Lhagu Glacier up close was so stunning I was speechless. ⚠️ Note: Be sure to wear a thick jacket. The wind by the glacier is strong enough to make you question life. Day 3: Zizhu Monastery → Return trip A monastery on a cliff at 4,800 meters elevation. Climbing up made my legs weak but it was worth it. The sound of prayer wheels echoed through the valley. At that moment, life felt truly meaningful. 🌡️ About the weather Think it’s cool in summer? Daytime is around 25℃. At night, it drops below 10℃. The temperature difference between day and night is extreme. Short sleeves plus a down jacket is the standard. 💡 Practical tips Transportation ✈️ Fly into Bangda Airport, one of the highest airports in the country 🚗 It’s best to rent a car since attractions are spread out and public transport is inconvenient Altitude sickness Take Rhodiola in advance, avoid strenuous exercise, and don’t shower on the first day My friend didn’t listen and ended up flat on the second day Accommodation The county town’s conditions are average. I recommend staying at a guesthouse by Ranwu Lake, where you can open the window to see snow-capped mountains Must bring Sunscreen, sunglasses, a windbreaker, and a thermos The high-altitude UV will teach you a lesson in no time 🤫 One last thing I really don’t recommend going to Chamdo in summer. Because once you go, you won’t want to leave. After you come back, all you can think about are the snow mountains, glaciers, and blue skies.

If you travel into Tibet via G317 or G349, consider stopping by Kangsha town to see how a lump of clay is transformed by artisans into warm, everyday objects. Where is Kangsha town? Kangsha town is located in the eastern part of Luolong County, Chamdo. It was once the seat of the old Luolong tribe. The ancient tea horse road passed through here, where the Central Plains trade routes and eastern Tibetan culture intersected for centuries. Today, it’s easy to reach from Luolong county seat by following National Highway G349. 🏺 What makes Kangsha pottery special? The biggest feature of Kangsha pottery is its “Han-Tibetan fusion.” Mature pottery techniques from the Central Plains were introduced along trade routes and met the local pottery traditions passed down through generations. After hundreds of years of localized adaptation, a unique pottery system was formed. It retains the practical qualities of traditional Tibetan pottery suited for plateau life while incorporating the smooth lines and precise shapes of Central Plains ceramics. Artisans grind natural mineral pigments to create red, yellow, blue, green, and other colors, painting bold visual patterns on the clay. But what truly lingers in my mind are often those moments of arrival that are treated with genuine care. · West of Zheduo Mountain, the terrain gradually opens up, and the hustle and bustle brought all the way from Chengdu is dispersed by the plateau winds. Xinduqiao stands guard at this first checkpoint beyond the pass. For more than sixty years, it has been the junction of the north and south lines of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Heading west along National Highway 318 leads straight to Mangkam, Tibet; turning north onto National Highway 317 leads to Chamdo. Almost every traveler entering Tibet stops here to rest. · For a long time, accommodations in Xinduqiao were just for resting. State-run inns, roadside beds, and simple guesthouses met basic needs but rarely carried the ceremonial feeling of entering Tibet. Bonda Grassland is located in the northeast of Baxoi County, Chamdo City, situated on the watershed between the Lancang River and the Nu River—the main ridge of Taniantaweng Mountain, with an average altitude of about 4200 to 4330 meters. The grassland stretches over 80 kilometers east to west and about 20 kilometers wide, with the Yuchu River, a tributary of the Nu River, winding through it. The green grass is like a carpet, dotted with wildflowers and herds of yaks, making it the most expansive highland pasture landscape along National Highway 318. Zuogong → Tiantuo Monastery → Bonda Grassland (viewing platform/town) → Fanyela Mountain → Nujiang 72 Bends → Baxoi.

We set off from Changdu city, heading east along G317 towards Dege, covering about 320 km and driving for around 7 hours. The traffic is sparse along the way, with no crowded commercialized viewing platforms. The mountains and rivers stretch wide and free, everywhere showing the untouched gentle nature of Tibet (see pictures). When we reached Shiquanhe Town, the capital of Ngari Prefecture and the westernmost point of this Tibet self-driving trip, we began our return journey along National Highway G317. The starting point of G317 is Chengdu, Sichuan, and it ends at Shiquanhe Town in Ngari, Tibet. Our return trip to Shanghai from Ngari is a journey from the end of G317 back towards its starting point. Compared to the well-known "must-drive G318," National Highway G317 has its own unique charm. Driving along G317 feels more relaxed: even when crossing high-altitude passes close to 5,000 meters, there is no strong sense of steep climbing pressure. Because the entire region has an average altitude above 4,000 meters, the terrain base is high, making altitude changes feel quite gentle. Driving from Ngari towards western Sichuan, you can clearly feel two distinct layers of change along the way: 1. Natural Scenery: The route gradually transitions from the barren, sparse grasslands of the Ngari Qiangtang Wilderness to the lush Hengduan mountain valleys. The scenery outside the window changes slowly, and you can visually perceive the landscape transformation. Traveling on National Highway G317 (the northern Sichuan-Tibet line), you will also encounter one plateau lake after another. If asked which lake is the most beautiful, everyone’s answer might be different. Because Tibetan scenery has no fixed form, with the seasons changing and mornings and evenings shifting, the same mountains and waters have completely different appearances, making it hard to fully describe the myriad views in words. 2. Cultural Scenery: Along the route are various ancient temples, historical sites, and many significant red landmarks, such as the revolutionary Jiangda and Gangtuo, the first Tibetan liberation village. 🏔️ Scenic Route Highlights (Driving from Changdu to Dege) 1. Eluo River Valley Section: Leaving the city, you first pass through a gentle river valley, with a tributary of the Lancang River extending alongside the road, and shallow green alpine meadows spreading on both banks. Early autumn colors on the mountains are soft and layered, with cattle and sheep scattered on the slopes. 2. Crossing Three Mountain Passes: Passing in order Zonglaya Mountain (4,481m), Xuejila Mountain (4,240m), and Aila Mountain (4,245m). Now the Aila Mountain Tunnel is fully open, so there is no need to detour over the dangerous old pass; the entire route is paved with asphalt, and ordinary cars can pass without difficulty. Simple viewing platforms at the passes allow short stops to gaze at the continuous Hengduan mountain range. 3. Along the Gangtuo Jinsha River: Entering the border between Sichuan and Tibet, the Jinsha River water appears muddy yellow, with steep canyon cliffs on both sides. This is the site of Tibet’s first liberation village, where magnificent canyon scenery blends with red cultural history, opening up a broad view. 💡 Experience Road Conditions: The entire route is paved with asphalt, with no large areas of bad roads or heavy rockfall sections; mountain curves are frequent, so slow down when turning. Keep distance from large trucks, and when road conditions allow, it is recommended to quickly overtake them. Altitude: The altitude ranges from 3,200 to 4,480 meters, with gentle ascents and descents; avoid intense running at high altitudes, take it easy, and slowly enjoy the beautiful scenery. The mountains and rivers are silent but can communicate with your soul. The sun and stars move, but the mountains and rivers remain. Supplies: Jiangda County is the only comprehensive supply point on the route, where you can refuel, dine, and replenish hot water; before and after the county, there are only scattered village shops. I only purchased necessary items (drinking water, food, and fuel) in the county where I stayed, ate lunch with food carried along (bread + eight-treasure porridge, etc.), and generally did not buy goods on the road. 📝 Reflections Many people travel to Dege just to check in at the Dege Printing House and Que'er Mountain, but I prefer this journey on the road. G317 is not just a road to the destination but an immersive experience of Tibetan everyday life. Unnamed yellow towers by the roadside, flowing clouds in the valleys, fluttering prayer flags in the mountains—these unknown, niche sights are far more unforgettable than popular tourist spots. Even after returning home, flipping through the photos taken then, everything reappears vividly in my mind~ The mountain does not see me, I go to see the mountain. The best scenery is always on the road.
