Built in 1454, it has a history of over 600 years. It is not officially open to the public, but visitors are not prohibited from entering; the main gate is closed, but visitors can simply push it open. This temple is far less opulent than other monasteries, resembling a small hermitage nestled among peach trees. Snow-capped mountains stand outside the temple, while inside, peach blossoms adorn the red and white courtyard walls, with branches reaching over the walls in full bloom. The garden's peach trees complement the Gelug school's iconic yellow walls. The ancient temple bells echo through the valley, intertwining with the fragrance of the peach blossoms. Monks study scriptures beneath the peach trees, and as the wind gently blows, petals drift down, scattering across the courtyard, with sunlight dancing on them.

Small bowls come one after another, and the owner keeps refilling. After finishing, they count bowls with stones. You can get full for just over 20 yuan. The meat sauce is made from Tibetan pork bones and is very flavorful. Don’t buy dried yak meat at tourist spots. In Dingqing county town, behind the Lao Sichuan supermarket, there’s a local stall selling hind leg meat for 80 yuan per jin. Dip it in chili powder to taste the creamy flavor. Butter tea and tsampa are standard breakfast items. The savory taste might take getting used to, but they really help with altitude sickness. In Leiwuqi town, try the butter tea with a little saffron at Amala Tibetan restaurant. It costs 10 yuan per set with barley cakes and is worth trying. Summer-only treats include ginseng fruit yogurt. If you see it, don’t miss out. It’s sweet and sour, richer than mainland yogurt. Around Gongjue, Awang’s whole roasted lamb must be booked in advance. Two-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly discouraged from attempting it. 🏡 Accommodation arrangements ⛰️ The guesthouse is located about 20 km from Dingqing county town toward Zizhu Mountain in a Tibetan village. The Three-color Lake is a hidden gem. The white lake, black lake, and yellow lake are adjacent but have very different colors. ▪️ Near the lake is the Puyu Glacier. In summer, be cautious during the ice cave melting period. Do not enter the ice cave; just admire it from the outside—it’s already stunning. ▪️ Return can be by the same route to Chamdo or detour from Bianba toward Luolong. Zhuomalangcuo Lake in Luolong is so off the beaten path that it has almost no tourists. If time allows, take a detour to see it. 🎒 Essential survival tips for this route 🔸 Zizhu Temple is at 4,800 meters, nearly 1,000 meters higher than Ranwu Lake. The risk of altitude sickness is significantly higher. It’s recommended to take Rhodiola a week in advance. Move slowly uphill. Avoid running, jumping, or shouting. 🔸 Dingqing county town has a gas station. Fill up before heading up the mountain. There are no commercial facilities on the mountain. Bring at least 2 L of drinking water and high-calorie food. 🔸 Mobile signal: 4G is normal in Dingqing county town, but most of the mountain route has no signal. Download offline maps in advance and bring a walkie-talkie just in case. 🔸 Accommodation is basic, so be mentally prepared. There are hotels in the county town, but hot water and heating may be unstable. Guesthouses offer a better experience but have simpler facilities, suitable for those who can rough it. 🔸 July is the Zizhu Temple festival season. From late June to mid-August, there are spirit dance ceremonies. If you’re lucky to be there, you can see monks wearing masks performing ancient Bon rituals. This kind of scene can’t be seen outside Tibet. 💡 The mindset for traveling 317 This route is not suitable for first-time visitors to Tibet. It’s better for travelers who have already been to Lhasa and Nyingchi and want to explore deeper. There are few supply points, high altitude, and complex road conditions. But the rewards are huge— You’ll see Tibet in its most raw and authentic form, unfiltered by any lens. It’s a landscape and faith that have barely changed in 3,000 years. After this trip, even staying in the city feels surreal. It’s definitely more than just a lake!! I stayed for four days and explored every corner around Ranwu town. Today, I’m sharing all my best-kept tips at once👇 · —————————————— 🗺️ What you need to know about Ranwu Ranwu town is located in Baxoi County, Chamdo City, Tibet. The whole town stretches along National Highway G318, at an altitude of 3,927 meters. The town is small; it takes about 20 minutes to walk from east to west. But there are tons of activities radiating out from here—Ranwu Lake itself is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, each with a completely different vibe. Further in, there are the Lhagong Glacier group, Ranwu caves, Ranna grassland, Xiudeng Monastery… You can connect them all and still find four or five days not enough. Since 2022, the town’s infrastructure has been upgraded significantly. Roads have been widened, trails improved, and even the viewpoints are now much better planned. The experience of visiting Ranwu now is completely different from five years ago. · —————————————— 🌊 How to choose among the three lake sections? Many guides just say "go to Ranwu Lake," but the upper, middle, and lower lakes each have their own character👇 “Upper lake · Yangcuo Lake” — the wildest feel 25 km from town, accessible via County Road G559. It has the largest water volume in summer and the widest lake surface, surrounded by dense primeval forest on both sides. Few tourists visit here. It’s perfect for a slow self-drive trip to find a quiet lakeside spot. The road is good and passable by sedan. “Middle lake · Bangcuo Lake” — the most convenient Right next to town, within walking distance. The lake is small but very accessible. It’s great for an evening stroll to watch the sunset. You can see herds of yaks and traditional Tibetan houses by the shore, with the strongest cultural atmosphere. “Lower lake · Lenganjabu Lake” — the most off-the-beaten-path About 15 km along G318 toward Bomi, the lake narrows into a canyon shape with steep mountains on both sides, offering a deep and tranquil beauty. Very few tourists come here. It’s ideal for a stop on the way back the next day. 🔑 Insider tip: If you only have one day, go to the upper lake in the morning for morning mist photos and watch the sunset at the middle lake in the evening. If you have two days, include the lower lake too. Each lake offers a different mood, never repetitive. · —————————————— 🧊 Lhagong Glacier summer field test Lhagong Glacier is 30 km from Ranwu town. From the highway, take a country road for 40 minutes. It’s one of the world’s three major oceanic glacier groups, consisting of six glaciers: Meixi, Yalong, Ruojiao, Dongga, Xiongjia, and Niuma. Bring 200–300 CNY cash just in case · —————————————— 🏔️ Hidden activities often overlooked “Ranwu caves” are a few kilometers northeast of town. These natural limestone caves are little known even among locals. The entrance is small, but inside is a wonderland. Stalactites sparkle under headlamp light. July is rainy, so the cave is slippery. Wear waterproof shoes. “Xiudeng Monastery” is a small, off-the-beaten-path Tibetan Buddhist temple on the hillside behind Ranwu town. Almost no tourists visit. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Ranwu Lake and the whole town, better than any viewpoint. The climb is about 200 meters elevation gain and takes half an hour. “Ranna grassland” is perfect for a half-day leisurely visit, about a 50-minute drive from Ranwu town. July is the best time to visit, with wildflowers everywhere and snow-capped mountains in the distance. Laying a blanket and relaxing here all afternoon beats any spa🌸 · —————————————— 🏡 Accommodation experience ⛰️ The starry sky glass room is at the east end of Ranwu town, a three-minute drive from G318 via a small road. There’s no light pollution, so you can truly see the Milky Way when you look up✨ ⛰️ The roof has a large transparent glass skylight plus floor-to-ceiling windows on the side. During the day, the snow mountains reflect on the floor. At night, you can lie in bed and watch star trails with the naked eye🌌 ⛰️ The room includes an independent oxygen machine, floor heating, and a humidifier. At 3,920 meters altitude, you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness ⛰️ The terrace faces east. Sunrise is around 6:20 AM. You don’t even need an alarm clock; the light will wake you up☀️ In peak season (July–August), accommodation in Ranwu town is tight. Good lake view rooms and starry sky rooms usually book out 20 days in advance. It’s best to lock in your room as soon as your itinerary is confirmed. This journey is more than a road trip; it’s a spiritual pilgrimage on wheels. 🚩Why Chamdo? Chamdo is the “eastern gateway” of Tibet, spanning G317 and G318. Since ancient times, it has been the vital passage for Sichuan, Yunnan, and Qinghai into Tibet and the first stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road entering Tibet. Along this culturally rich route, you’ll connect snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes, ancient temples, and faith. [Four stops in Chamdo, a journey through mountains and rivers] First stop: Jiangda | red secrets and the first stop entering Tibet Crossing the Jinsha River, Jiangda is the “eastern gateway” to Tibet along G317. Gangto, known as the “first village liberated in Tibet,” stands quietly by the riverbank. The cliff bears a giant carving of the word “Tibet.” Red Flag Square and the river crossing site tell stories of a turbulent past. Along the way, explore the snow-capped mountain corridors of Xueba Valley or discover the woodcarving craftsmanship at Boluo Ancient Marsh. Spend the night at a Tibetan guesthouse in Gangto, falling asleep to the sound of the river. 💡 Tip: The Tibet entry checkpoint can be busy. Prepare your ID and wait patiently. Second stop: Karuo | millennia of echoes and city life Karuo means “castle” in Tibetan and is known as the “gateway to eastern Tibet.” Don’t miss the largest Gelugpa monastery in eastern Tibet, Qiangbalin Monastery. Watch the red walls and golden roofs glow in the morning light. Walk clockwise along the monastery walls while listening to the passionate debates echoing through the halls. About 12 km south of the city, the Karuo ruins take you back over 4,000 years to the Neolithic era. The unearthed red and black painted double pottery jars are treasures of the Tibet Museum. If time allows, drive to Gama Tibetan Art Valley to visit the hometown of intangible cultural heritage artisans. 💡 Tip: The altitude here is moderate, making it an excellent place to service your vehicle and restock supplies. Third stop: Leiwuqi | plateau forests and colorful temples Heading north from Karuo, Leiwuqi spreads across forested valleys and is known as the “forest sea of eastern Tibet” and “little Switzerland of Tibet.” The Chajema Hall stands amid blue skies and green fields, with layers of red, white, and black stripes resembling a giant thangka standing for a thousand years. Don’t miss the deep forests and natural hot springs of Yiri Gorge. Leiwuqi’s yak meat is rich and flavorful—a pot of yak hotpot is perfect to soothe the road weariness. 💡 Tip: This stretch has many sharp turns and narrow roads but stunning scenery. Use your horn frequently when turning. The hot springs in Yiri Gorge are worth a soak. Fourth stop: Dingqing | the red symphony on the backbone of eastern Tibet Dingqing is the highest city on this journey. The spiritual highland is Mount Zizhu at 4,800 m—“Zizhu” means six peaks, with towering, steep rock formations. On clear days, the golden roofs of mountain buildings shine brightly, like a palace fallen from the heavens. At the summit, the endless snow-capped mountains stretch to the horizon. The wind may blow away the dust behind you, but it can’t erase the mountains and rivers you’ve passed. G317 is more than a road; it’s the backbone of Tibet’s source. too overwhelming! 😭 I originally planned to escape the heat in Tibet this summer, but Chamdo gave me a lesson— So beautiful that you don’t want to leave. 🏔️ My 3-day 2-night itinerary Day 1: Qiangbalin Monastery → Tea Horse City Arrived in the afternoon and headed straight to Qiangbalin Monastery. The golden roof dazzled under the sun. In the evening, strolled around Tea Horse City, drank butter tea, and ate yak jerky. Prices were surprisingly reasonable. Day 2: Ranwu Lake → Lhagu Glacier The water at Ranwu Lake is as green as emerald, no filter needed for photos. Seeing the blue ice of Lhagu Glacier up close was so stunning I was speechless. ⚠️ Note: Be sure to wear a thick jacket. The wind by the glacier is strong enough to make you question life. Day 3: Zizhu Monastery → Return trip A monastery on a cliff at 4,800 meters elevation. Climbing up made my legs weak but it was worth it. The sound of prayer wheels echoed through the valley. At that moment, life felt truly meaningful. 🌡️ About the weather Think it’s cool in summer? Daytime is around 25℃. At night, it drops below 10℃. The temperature difference between day and night is extreme. Short sleeves plus a down jacket is the standard. 💡 Practical tips Transportation ✈️ Fly into Bangda Airport, one of the highest airports in the country 🚗 It’s best to rent a car since attractions are spread out and public transport is inconvenient Altitude sickness Take Rhodiola in advance, avoid strenuous exercise, and don’t shower on the first day My friend didn’t listen and ended up flat on the second day Accommodation The county town’s conditions are average. I recommend staying at a guesthouse by Ranwu Lake, where you can open the window to see snow-capped mountains Must bring Sunscreen, sunglasses, a windbreaker, and a thermos The high-altitude UV will teach you a lesson in no time 🤫 One last thing I really don’t recommend going to Chamdo in summer. Because once you go, you won’t want to leave. After you come back, all you can think about are the snow mountains, glaciers, and blue skies.
