2024 Rome Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Rome is Italy's capital city and, in classical antiquity, the center of the Roman Empire. Because of the city's long and storied history, it is known as the "Eternal City". Presently, Rome has become a large "open-air history museum". Inside the city, many traces of ancient Rome have been preserved. You can go to the Colosseum—one of the symbols of the powerful ancient Roman Empire. At the Roman Forum, you will be shocked and amazed by the prosperity of the ancient imperial world. The Pantheon is a place where you can see architectural miracles constructed over 1,000 years ago. Within the city of Rome, there is also a country within a country—Vatican City. This is a place where you can experience the ultimate in Christian religious art and see many masterpieces left behind by Renaissance masters.

The eternal city
Number of sightseeing spots in Rome is probably like no other city. I swear, every corner has something historical or beautiful to see. I ended up walking so much every day just to try and take it all in. It’s amazing how you can wander from one ancient ruin to a beautiful piazza to a cute café, all within a few blocks.
A tip: wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be doing a lot of walking on cobblestones, and trust me, your feet will thank you.
What I loved most was the city’s vibe—there’s a mix of energy and history everywhere you go. I never got tired of exploring, even though I was exhausted by the end of each day. Rome’s charm is in the details, and there’s always something new around the corner. Definitely worth every step!

Autumn euro trip

My autumn Eurotrip itinerary:
Start in Rome, in October and even in November the weather is fine but it’s less tourists so less crowded and prices going slightly lower
3 days in Rome, then short flight to Paris
3 days in Paris
Drink some hot chocolate, enjoy museums and good shopping, sales will start in November
Flight to Nice. Where you could wear short sleeves and enjoy the warm sun shining. My huge recommendation is to do Cot’dazur in November. We stayed in Nice hotel for 100€ per night (and during summertime this hotel costs 600€)

The Charm of Rome on Via del Tritone
Via del Tritone is a bustling street located in the heart of Rome, close to many tourist attractions. If you're traveling from the airport, you can take a train from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station, then transfer to Metro Line A and get off at Barberini Station, from where you can easily walk to Via del Tritone. This area is also near the Trevi Fountain, making it a popular spot for tourists.
Via del Tritone is one of the main roads that cross the center of Rome and is well-known as a hub for shopping and culture. It features a variety of brand stores and upscale restaurants, with the Rinascente department store being a prime location for shopping enthusiasts. The area harmoniously blends historical architecture with modern commercial spaces, offering a unique experience of both traditional and contemporary Rome.
When I visited Via del Tritone, I was amazed by its vibrant atmosphere and the variety of attractions. For a shopping lover like me, it felt like paradise. The street is lined with numerous cafes and gelato shops, perfect for taking a break. Its proximity to the Trevi Fountain also makes it convenient for planning your sightseeing itinerary. However, it can get crowded during peak hours, so it's advisable to plan your visit accordingly.
Palatine: More than just a hill
When you buy a ticket to visit Rome’s ancient colosseum, you can also visit the Roman Forum and Palatine hill as part of the cost. Turn left on entering and you will be transported to the world of Augustus wandering through temples of various gods and palaces of its emperors.
Walking around this site it’s easy to see why it is the place of legend rising above the cities most famous sites such as the colosseum, Roman Forum and Circus Maximus #rome
Vittorio Emanuele II Monument in Rome
I visited the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument in Rome!
Vittorio Emanuele II was the first king who played a significant role in the unification of Italy.
From the rooftop, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the city of Rome.
It's located in the city center and easily accessible, so be sure to visit when you're in Rome!

I visited Italy four times in one year, and I'm here to share the best routes from north to south!
Italy, a country full of romance and art, always attracts me. I visited four times in one year, and twice I chose this beautiful land without hesitation. Today, I will share a carefully planned itinerary for Italy, taking you from northern Italy to southern Italy, and showing you the scenery you can't miss.
Milan: The starting point of fashion and art
The journey begins in Milan, a city full of fashion. It is not only a shopping paradise, but also a palace of art. Here, you can enjoy world-class art works and feel the profound culture of Italy.
Lake Como: The back garden of Milan
Depart from Milan and drive for half an hour to Lake Como. This quiet lake is surrounded by mountains, and the lake is clear and bottomless, like a beautiful picture. Stroll in the small town by the lake and feel the tranquility and beauty. Varenna, Bellagio, Lenno, each town has its own unique charm, especially those villas hidden in the lake and mountains, such as Villa Monastero, Villa Melzi and Villa del Balbianello, which are even more fascinating.
Dolomites: Green Wonderland in July, August and September
Continue north to the Dolomites. Here, July, August and September are the time when the grass is green, and there may be snow in mid-September. Drive for 4 hours from Milan to this fairyland. On the Alpe di Siusi, you can enjoy the magnificent sunrise and sunset. The Sporthotelsonne where we stayed has a great view. In addition, Ortisei and Val di Funes are also places not to be missed, especially the iconic small church in Val di Funes, which is impressive.
Florence and Tuscany: The cradle of the Renaissance
Go south to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, and Piazzale Michelangelo is a great place to watch the sunset. In Tuscany, from May to early June is the time when the grass is green. It takes 3 hours to drive from Rome. Here, you can live for a week and feel the tranquility and comfort. Recommended accommodation Villa Cozzano, located in a beautiful manor, surrounded by S-shaped cypress trees and beautiful houses. In addition, the town of Pienza is also a good place to heal the soul. It is located in the valley and is full of tranquility and harmony.
Rome: The charm of the eternal city
How can you miss Rome when you come to Italy? This eternal city is full of historical and cultural atmosphere, and every corner hides a story. Here, you can explore the ruins of ancient Rome and feel the shock of time and space.
Sicily: A dreamland all year round
Finally, come to Sicily. Here you can play all year round. Although the summer season is hot, the beautiful scenery of Cefalu, Taormina and Syracuse is definitely worth a visit. Cefalu is a postcard of Sicily, Taormina is a colorful town on the cliff, and Syracuse is the location of the beautiful legend of Sicily. Flying from Rome or Milan to Palermo or Catania, and then renting a car to visit Sicily, is a very comfortable way to travel.
This route from northern Italy to southern Italy covers many beautiful scenery and features of Italy. Whether it's fashionable Milan, quiet Lake Como, magnificent Dolomites, Renaissance Florence and Tuscany, eternal Rome or dreamy Sicily, it's all fascinating. If you love Italy like me, you might as well follow this route guide and go deep into this beautiful land!
The Colosseum: A Must-Visit Landmark in Rome, Perfect for Day and Night
The Colosseum is a massive and grand historical structure in Rome. Its exterior is particularly beautiful, making it a great spot for photography. During the day, the arches of the Colosseum stand out, while at night, the lighting adds to its ambiance. If you're visiting Rome, be sure to visit the Colosseum both during the day and at night to capture some unforgettable photos.

Rome is truly a history and architecture fanatics dream!!!
This was my first time in Rome and I highly recommend going to Sistine Chapel and the Colosseum. We started our day around 11am and managed to visit both places leisurely by 5pm.
We got our tickets online but I think you can buy at the counter dependent if you are going during peak season. I went in August so it was definitely very busy. The tickets were roughly 60euros for entry to both places.
Also it’s not featured in the pictures but I highly recommend you to visit near Trevi Fountain where there are many delicious and affordable sandwich shops around. #italy #rome #summer #Sistinechapel #colosseum
One of the 7 Wonders of the World ! 🇮🇹
#traveldiaries
Ticking off our 3rd 7 wonders of the world after The Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal in India. The Colosseum is an interesting one just because we stand corrected. A lot of what we knew were actually not facts 😂 But seeing it in real life was just as surreal and awe-inspiring as when we saw The Taj and The Great Wall. Such a piece of history that truly is a testament of how grand ancient architecture is. The historical significance that it holds will always be one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
I really suggest to be in a tour group as you will definitely learn a lot about the Colosseum and its historical significance.
TIPS:
1. Buy tickets in advance and trip app offers a tour for the Colosseum.
2. Wear comfortable shoes
3. Apply sunblock as it is very hot there.
Enjoy!
Explore the Timeless Charm of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy
Castel Sant'Angelo, located on the banks of the Tiber River, is one of Rome's most popular landmarks. 🕌 Originally built as a mausoleum for Roman emperors, this ancient fortress later became a military stronghold and is now a museum 🏺 showcasing numerous precious artworks and historical artifacts. As you step into Castel Sant'Angelo, you will be awestruck by its grandeur. 🏛️ The towering walls, majestic towers, and exquisite sculptures all testify to the wisdom and craftsmanship of the ancients. 🌇 The exterior of the castle is particularly impressive, especially at night when it is illuminated, adding to its mysterious and romantic allure.
Hotels with nice city views of Rome
#100WaysOfTravel
I just checked in at the hotel in Rome, and the trip was full of expectations. What I was satisfied with was that it was very quiet, perfect soundproofing, and free red wine and water on the table. I drank half a bottle and was dizzy. The window is really big, and the view is very good. You can see the human-shaped shuttle downstairs. The bed is also comfortable to sleep in, but I'm not used to the European elevator. The space is very small, and then it's like it's about to fall aft. Overall, I'm still satisfied. Next time I come to Rome, I'll book this one.
Secret Garden at hotel de Russie Rome
#100WaysOfTravel
It's so beautiful . The sculptures in the whole hotel, from the corridor of the guest room to the sculptures in the room, all reflect the beautiful elements and the Renaissance Italian culture is really the birthplace of Renaissance culture, so you can feel the thick literary color everywhere. There are a lot of flower arrangements in the lobby and public areas of the hotel. These florists are very hard-working. Because they live in the hotel, they see the florists who have to rearrange and trim every two days. It's really good, so I also want to praise them.
Rome's Iconic Symbol of the ancient world: the Colosseum
#traveldiaries
Step into two thousand years of history as you explore the most iconic symbol of the ancient world in Rome: the Colosseum.
During the Roman Empire and under the motto of "Bread and Circuses" the Roman Colosseum (known then as Flavian Amphitheatre) allowed more than 50,000 people to enjoy its finest spectacles. The exhibitions of exotic animals, executions of prisoners, recreations of battles, and gladiator fights kept the Roman people entertained for years.
The Colosseum remained active for over 500 years. The last recorded games in history were celebrated in the 6th century.
Since the 6th century, the Colosseum has suffered lootings, earthquakes, and even bombings during World War II. Demonstrating a great survival instinct, the Colosseum was used for decades as a storehouse, church, cemetery, and even a castle for nobility.

It’s easy to see why Rome’s one of the most-visited places on the planet: There’s history everywhere (the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the list goes on), sculptural masterpieces in almost every piazza, and—of course—ridiculously good food. Every trip could feel like a whirlwind, but slow down and you’ll discover lots of surprises. Spend a Sunday morning in Trastevere and hunt for vintage finds at Porta Portese flea market. Or hit San Lorenzo—a student neighborhood with an edgy-but-charming vibe—for trendy shops, galleries, and street art. There’s always something to do and we’ve got more recs, below

Popular restaurant in Rome-Authentic Neapolitan Pizza
#specialfood
[🇮🇹Italy - Rome] My first meal in Rome was at 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo, which specializes in authentic Napoli pizza. I remember going to the original store in Napoli a few years ago and the pizza was super delicious💗 I found out that there is also a branch in Rome , of course you have to reflect on it. Come and do like the locals and eat a big one in one person☺️ Your belly will feel so good!
I ordered Margherita con Bufala, the simple taste is great👍🏼The middle of the cake is soft and thin, and the mouthful is filled with the aroma of tomatoes and buffalo cheese.
The store's home-brewed beer 🍻 and fried food are also signatures, especially the famous Roman specialty Supplì, which is almost a must-order at every table. I ordered Supplì Alla Crema di Parmigiano, which is filled with semi-melted cheese and is super delicious.
You can't make reservations at this store, and you usually have to queue up at night. I didn't have to wait very long at my age, about ten minutes. Most of the people who come to eat are locals 🍕It’s past nine o’clock when we finish eating, and there are many people waiting for a table at the door! It’s a popular local store~

The ancient city of Rome and Vatican
My visit to the Vatican and its surrounding treasures in Rome was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The Vatican Museums, in particular, are a testament to the vast and rich history of art, culture, and religion. Walking through the endless corridors filled with masterpieces by the likes of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio was an overwhelming experience. Each room seemed to transport me to a different era, and the sheer volume of art and artifacts on display was breathtaking.
The highlight of the museums, of course, is the Sistine Chapel. Seeing Michelangelo's famous frescoes, including the iconic ceiling and The Last Judgment, was an unforgettable moment. The intricate details and the grandeur of the artwork are impossible to fully appreciate in pictures—being there in person is a deeply moving experience.
St. Peter’s Basilica is another marvel that left a lasting impression. The scale of the basilica is immense, and the architectural brilliance is evident in every corner. The grandeur of the interior, with its soaring ceilings, stunning mosaics, and Michelangelo’s Pietà, is truly magnificent. Climbing to the top of the dome offers panoramic views of Rome that are well worth the effort, providing a unique perspective of the city and the Vatican.
Rome itself is a city that feels like an open-air museum. From the grandeur of the Colosseum to the beauty of the Trevi Fountain, every corner of the city is steeped in history. The blend of ancient ruins with modern life creates a vibrant atmosphere that is both captivating and unique.
However, visiting these iconic sites comes with a few challenges. The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica are extremely popular, which means that crowds can be overwhelming, particularly during peak tourist season. The lines to enter the museums and the basilica can be very long, and once inside, the large number of visitors can make it difficult to fully appreciate the art and architecture. The sheer size of the Vatican Museums can also be daunting, and it’s easy to feel rushed or overwhelmed by the number of exhibits.
To make the most of your visit, I highly recommend booking tickets in advance and considering a guided tour to gain deeper insights into the history and significance of what you’re seeing. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon can help you avoid the worst of the crowds. When visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, be sure to dress modestly, as there is a strict dress code in place, and be prepared for a security check before entering.
One thing to avoid is trying to see everything in one day. The Vatican Museums alone can easily take several hours, if not a full day, to explore properly. It’s better to focus on the sections that interest you most rather than trying to cover everything. Also, be mindful of the cultural and religious significance of these sites—respectful behavior and attire are essential.

Rome’s most iconic landmarks The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps, or Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, embodying the elegance and charm of the Eternal City. This grand staircase, with its 135 steps, connects the Piazza di Spagna at the base to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top, offering stunning views, a rich history, and a lively atmosphere. The Spanish Steps are set in the heart of Rome’s historic center, surrounded by beautiful Baroque architecture, high-end boutiques, and charming cafes. The staircase itself is a masterpiece of design, with its sweeping curves, terraces, and landings creating a harmonious and fluid ascent. The steps are often adorned with seasonal flowers, adding to the picturesque setting, especially during the spring when they are covered in blooming azaleas. #100waysoftravel

Rome is always a good idea

Rome is a city full of museums, historic squares, rich food culture, Roman landmarks and other highlights. To prepare your visit to this city, our travel guides shows you the top 5 of the most famous sightseeing and most beautiful Rome attractions.
1. Colosseum
The number 1 attraction of Rome is the Colosseum; the large amphitheatre that housed 65,000 spectators in Roman days. Gladiators battled each other as well as wild animals in the Colosseum's arena, which is considered one of the seven modern wonders of the world
2. The most famous fountain in the capital of Italy and perhaps even the world must be the ‘Fontana di Trevi’, or Trevi Fountain. This baroque fountain, located on the Piazza di Trevi, was built in the 18th century and a must see at the list of 'best things to do in Rome'. The landmark and monument displays the god of the sea, Neptune on his chariot.
3. Pantheon
One of the best maintained buildings from Roman times is the Pantheon. What function the building had in those days is still not clear, but the Pantheon was given to the pope by emperor Hadrian
4. The Forum Romanum was the centre of the ancient Roman Empire. During your visit there, you will walk past Roman excavations and the archaeological park full of old temples, arches, market halls and other important buildings built there by different emperors. Next to the forum lies Palatine Hill, where you will find excavations of imperial residences.
5. One of the most remarkable squares and best places to visit in Rome is Piazza Navona. The famous square therefore owes its elongated shape to its original purpose as a Roman athletics stadium. Interesting sights on the square include a number of fountains, such as the ‘La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi’ by Bernini, an interesting obelisk, and you can visit the excavations of the old stadium of Domitianus.

The National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo was a fantastic stop on my summer trip to Rome. Located near Termini Station, the entrance fee is about €10, which gives access to this and other sites in the museum network.
The palace is a treasure trove of ancient Roman artifacts, from stunning frescoes to intricate mosaics and ancient coins. I was particularly captivated by the frescoes from the Villa of Livia and the impressive collection of Roman sculptures. The museum’s layout allows for a leisurely exploration of its rich exhibits.
Nearby, I strolled through the vibrant Esquilino district and enjoyed some great Italian food. Palazzo Massimo is a must-visit for anyone fascinated by Rome's ancient history. 🏛️🍝

I am in love with Rome
#100waysoftravel
What a fascinating city this is. I have such fond and beautiful memories from my time here. With thousands of years of rich history and stunning beauty on every nook and corner, you could spend weeks and weeks on a Roman holiday.
The good is exemplary. Never have I found simplest of things taste this good. Every pizza or every pasta that I had was superb. The gelato's and coffee were another level. The architectural heritage of this city makes it a non stop museum with every other sight worthy of appreciation. Not to forget that Vatican, the world's smallest country also is within the limits of this city. So unique!
